That happened Saturday. In a similar event, on Friday, "Visitor Killed by Roof Debris at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West/A 55-year-old rector from a university in Brazil was killed while on a walking tour of the famed architect’s winter home in Scottsdale, Ariz." (NYT).

A question I asked Grok: What are some other incidents of a person getting killed by an object that has some ironic significance? On my own, I only thought of [that character I falsely remember as having been played by] Daniel Day-Lewis in "Howard's End."

Reading this, you may wonder, am I spending my time well? Death is right there walking beside you, ready to take you out when the time is right.

How Catholic is he? We're told he's "a lapsed Catholic who recently completed a master’s at Harvard Divinity School in order to rediscover his faith (his thesis was titled: Is Jesus Kinda Hot?)." Is religion part of making "playful again"? You can find "an artistic and highbrow view of the female nude" in church:

This reminds me of a sequence in the movie "Blue Moon," about the songwriter Lorenz Hart, who was gay, though not openly. The character has this conversation with the bartender. From the brilliant screenplay by Robert Kaplow (commission earned):

Did he need therapy and what's the story of its not working on him?

My traumatic childhood had made me resentful and left me with awful conflict management skills. I would overreact or withdraw—fight or flight!—over minor transgressions.... Because of Usha, I attended a few therapy sessions at the Yale student health clinic. The therapist I spoke with was a good guy, but I found therapy too uncomfortable. I'm noticing that striking and hilarious phrase for the first time as I encounter this essay in the NYT: "Pope Leo Chooses Social Justice Over Pelvic Theology."

This is by David Gibson, director of the Center on Religion and Culture at Fordham University, and I assume the headline represents his opinion, not something Leo is doing openly, using those words.

Let's read:

Trump wants the Pope to stay in his lane, but does Trump stay in his lane? I see I already have the tag "Trump and religion," so I'm going to say no.

MORE: From Leo: "The things I say are not meant as attacks on anyone. I do not look at my role as being political, a politician. I don’t want to get into a debate with him. I don’t think that the message of the Gospel is meant to be abused in the way that some people are doing."

I'm not getting in your lane. You're getting in my lane.

Speaking of tags, I have a longstanding "religion and politics" tag. The line between the two has never been clear, and people are not clear about how clear they want the line to be. It's a very old problem, and it won't be solved with facile stay-in-your-lane taunts.

I said he's not the Shah, and Meade said it was like addressing a nun as "Sister" when you're not Catholic. I said: "You mean like using someone's preferred pronouns?" It doesn't matter what you think the person really is, you're showing respect. 

Is it wrong to call Reza Pahlavi the "Shah"? Does it help him garner support or not? He's not in power, not yet anyway, but is there good reason to refer to him as the Shah?

Klein pushed back: "Well, isn’t that a prescription? If I were to try to boil it down: tariffs, a closed border and Christianity?"

Instead of taking on Klein's idea that the right does offer solutions, Newsom seized on that last word —Christianity — and tumbled into personal storytelling mode:

"I hope that the sisters will accept the path I have outlined and that a regulated religious life will once again be a reality in Goldenstein."

Wrote Abbot Markus Grasl, quoted in "3 Rebel Nuns Can Stay in Abbey, if They Give Up Social Media/After the octogenarian nuns refused to return to their senior center, the abbot has finally folded. But he has some conditions" (NYT).

When three octogenarian nuns escaped their senior center in September, their unlikely quest for freedom set off a bitter standoff with the abbot who leads their Roman Catholic order. The three rebel nuns forced their way back into the Austrian abbey where they had lived for decades, before the senior center. ...

The abbot had cited "a church rule that orders must have at least six living members." What happened to that rule? There were 3 nuns living in an abbey within a medieval castle.

Now that they've gotten so much attention and support, the abbot says they can stay, but they "must stop letting laypeople into their cloisters, and — most likely much more important — they must end their social media feed." And yet that's how they won their heart's desire, though public attention and support, acquired through social media. Without social media, perhaps they'll lose what they've gained. But what prevents them from restarting their social media, if promises are broken? A vow of obedience? That didn't stop their first rebellion.

Said Franca Giansoldati, "a Vatican expert at Italy’s Il Messaggero newspaper," quoted in "Who is Robert Prevost? New Pope hit out at Trump administration weeks ago/Robert Prevost, now Leo XIV, is the first American chosen to lead the Catholic Church, having steered a moderate path with the Augustinian mission in Peru" (London Times).

How did Prevost, now Leo, "hit out"? J.D. Vance, justifying the adminstration's immigration policy, had said, "There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbour, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritise the rest of the world. A lot of the ­far-left has completely inverted that." In response, on X, Prevost reposted a link to an article titled "JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others." And — with respect to the treatment of ­Kilmar Abrego Garcia, Prevost retweeted "Do you not see the ­suffering? Is your conscience not ­disturbed? How can you stay quiet?"

We discussed that Vance quote on this blog back on February 2, here. A podcaster, Rory Stewart, had said "Nowhere does Jesus suggest that love is to be prioritised in concentric circles. His love is universal."

Vance had responded to Stewart: "Does Rory really think his moral duties to his own children are the same as his duties to a stranger who lives thousands of miles away? Does anyone? This false arrogance drives so much elite failure over the last 40 years. Rory Stewart thinks he has an IQ of 130 when it’s really 110.'"

I'd said: "It's not a question of what Rory really thinks but what Jesus really said. What IQ does Vance ascribe to Jesus?"

"Some progressives within the church worry that the dozens of new cardinals Francis chose around the world will be less versed in Vaticanese..."

"... and may be taken in by the sweetness of the unity siren. 'It sounds really good,' said Cardinal Michael Czerny of Canada, who was one of Francis’ closest advisers, but 'it means reversal.' ADDED: For the annals of Things I Asked Grok: The "unity" the cardinals are considering is unity within the Catholic Church (at the cost of alienating some who are outside of the Catholic Church), right? But if the Church leans instead toward "diversity" of opinion (on social issues, etc), is that a better or a worse strategy for attracting newcomers? What's the point of the Church if it's an amalgam of what various people believe instead of a strong and required set of beliefs?

At the Al Smith charity dinner — Trump was there, and Kamala Harris was not.

There were far more Democrats than Trump fans there, but Harris stayed away, though they let her appear as a pre-recorded video (in which she off-loaded the comedy to Molly Shannon, who deployed her old SNL Catholic schoolgirl character, and I couldn't hear any laughter in the room). 

Trump sat there — between Melania and the Cardinal — and laughed at gibes from Jim Gaffigan, who plays Tim Walz on SNL. Gaffigan is funny — and Catholic — and he handled his task well. Scroll to 2:25 to see him step up to speak as the camera pans to Donald Trump, who knows he's going to get kicked around and is sitting facing the audience, with only the Cardinal and Chuck Schumer between him and Gaffigan. But he knows he's not the one who chickened out and he knows he's going to get the last word.
