"The internet has always been lawless, but the chaos of the Trump era has worsened online nastiness to the point where even I, a verifiably snarky internet writer..."

"... have grown sick of it all. Desperate for an antidote, I started dabbling in wholesome activities: bicycling, crossword puzzles, baking and writing in my journal. 'Oh no! You’re becoming a hippie,' my mother said after I informed her of my new hobbies. In these efforts to self-soothe, I made a life-changing discovery: Making sourdough bread is the opposite of using the internet...."

From a NYT essay by Eve Peyser, "I Wanted a Dog. I Bake Bread Instead." The headline highlights the dog/bread alternatives as opposed to the escape-from-the-internet theme. I'm guessing that's because dog gets hits... on the internet.

Anyway, I'm blogging this because of the mother's concept of "hippie" and the idea that it could include crossword puzzles. But I like the idea of the younger generation rediscovering the hippie lifestyle, especially if it's envisioned in positive ways — with "wholesome activities."

Also, this article fit with something else I was just reading, "In a divided U.S., therapists treating anxiety are hearing the same name over and over: Donald Trump/'Trump Anxiety Disorder' may not be an official diagnosis, but therapists know the symptoms" (Politico), which chimed with something I'd already blogged this morning, Trump himself using the term Trump derangement syndrome.

Isn't it interesting that therapists are seeing the reaction to Trump as a disorder?! And that Politico framed it that way.

Maybe mainstream media is noticing a lot of people who feel the way I do, that the antagonism to Trump is so over-the-top that it's weirder than Trump. We turn away... and toward the man we originally resisted because he was too weird.

I tried to find a picture of a hippie doing a crossword puzzle, but my search had the serendipitous effect of turning up this New Yorker humor piece from last February: "Former Hippies Put in Horrible Position of Rooting for F.B.I." ("'I always dreamed I’d spend my retirement surrounded by my grandchildren, telling them that the F.B.I. were fascist pigs,' Carol Foyler, a former hippie who lives in Santa Cruz, said. 'That dream has been shot to hell.'").

Clearly the cure for Trump Anxiety Disorder is to sit in a quiet room, in a comfortable position, with your eyes closed and repeat softly “Obama, Obama, Obama...”.

Your anxiety will slowly dissipate.

I find it smile-worthy that pursuits like baking your own bread, having a garden, enjoying the company of animals are considered "hippie". For those of us who came of age in the late 60s and the 70s in rural areas, those things were just how we lived everyday. It was a very conservative environment and not counter-culture in any way. "Hippies" were city folk living in places like Haight-Ashbury, dressing like old-time prairie folks, avoiding work, doing drugs, and singing. A lot of singing. Buying sliced Wonder Bread was counter-culture for us. In all of my memories of that time in my life, I never picture a hippie kneading dough.

The same people who swooned over Obama get Triggered by Trump.

The disorder was evident in swooning over Obama (or any politician or celebrity). It’s why so many in the media are fucking loons. It was a total embarrassment in 2008 the way they praised Obama. Guy was a lightweight like W. Affirmative Action Obama and Ivy League Legacy W. Obama seemed Fresh and after W no one gave a shit about a lightweight president. It would be rather racist to believe that Lightweight Legacy is OK but Lifhtweight Affirmative Actuon is bad. Obama is smarter than W. He didn’t start a war in Iraq so he wasn’t as dumb as W. And there is something to be said for a guy who can bulkshit his way to the top like Obama (or Clinton, Nixon, Reagan) vs a silver spoon foot like W, JFK, and FDR who would be nobody without the family connections. But Obama was always a lightweight. He had good instincts as far as bulls hitting people but it’s not hard to bullshit Ivy League professors and the legal industry. Professors and lawyers and judges are gullible for the most part. Insecure and so desperate for praise.

Trump is the antidote for these people. But the antidote doesn’t work on most people. A decent upbrining was the vaccine. But most of these people had shittty parents like W and Obama.

That hasn't been the case. The sane one is Trump.

If the definition of disorder includes an irrational fear, distrust, and hatred of something, then I'd say TDS is a disorder. As I've mentioned before, I abandoned Twitter and FB about 18 months ago. My life is very much better for having done so. Over the past few years I have been increasing my time investment in hobbies such as woodworking (including basic carpentry, home repair, cabinet work, and turning), bicycling, and other manual & physical activities that require thinking and planning. I don't characterize these as hippie activities. I'm too young at 61 to be a hippie anyway, which is good because I never much liked the hippies I met.

I was in New York the week after the 2016 election. It was like walking onto the set of the Walking Dead. The look in the eyes of the people there was a palpable fear mixed with an inability to get their mind around reality. Blank, yet gloomy. I met with a friend, an esteemed doctor, who views the world in the same way as the famous New Yorker cover (New Yorker). She was not herself. She told me that her colleagues are all pretty much in a fetal position. She was clearly thrown off her center. That was then. Since then I've read articles, essays, and heard anecdotally, that reams of New Yorkers are keeping the psychology industry thriving.

These are the same people creating the news coverage of everything in today's world. This is their world view, in crisis. The rest of us are seeing a President use actual tough negotiating skills on the rest of the world's leaders, and...it's working. I see North Korea being worked on, my New York friends see nothing. I see the EU coming to grips with it's own tariffs, my New York friends see chaos. I see 4.1% GDP growth in the 2nd quarter as outstanding. My New York friends make an additional appointment with their shrink. I cringe when I read Trumps tweets. The rest of the world cringes when it reads Trumps tweets (hey- we DO have something we all agree on!). Eve Peyser is just another New Yorker. (I don't recall when we decided that black glasses-wearing young New Yorkers would the ones to tell us about the world). Can't get her mind around it. She should continue to bake. It is good therapy. I did a lot of it during Obama's years.

Day after day, the Mueller witch hunt continues, the economy hums along, the Europeans cave, our defense grows stronger, Dems scream louder, the Deep State resists transparency, and GOPe turncoats show their true colors, all in a definite pattern, nothing chaotic about it.

Sure, Trump himself can unpredictable--if he doesn't know what he's gonna say next, who am I to say?--but his basic policies are quite conservative, and if we judge moves not as isolated maneuvers but temporary steps, we might even see a sorta-kinda method in his madness.

Does it work the same way in reverse? Are the people who are now swooning over Trump the people who were deranged with hatred of Obama?

With some qualification, I think so.

There has been the special "deranged" group -- Donald Trump himself, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Alex Jones -- whose hatred of Obama pushed them into derangement territory. They variously dabbled in laughable conspiracy theories about Birtherism, pizza parlor pedophilia, the "assassination" of Seth Rich (much like the "assassination" of Vince Foster), et cetera.

But of course there were always conservatives and Republicans who opposed Obama, and who have never "swooned" over Trump. No "derangement" in opposition to Obama, no "swooning" for Trump. And now, as anti-Trump Republicans, no "derangement" in opposition to Trump.

They can drive the true believers nuts — make that further nuts than they already were — but the sane people among us tune them out. Charlottesville and Helsinki were alike in one critical way: no matter what Trump said the media were going to get hysterical. "I should know better than to take mentally challenged prog scribblers seriously, but really: in what sense is the Trump era more "chaotic"?

Obviously it's not, nothing terrible is happening and some good things are happening, it's just a normal reaction to the constant lies and misrepresentations from the MSM, e.g. people react to (mostly fake) news about crime but not in response to actual crime rates.

"Despite myriad stressors, in August survey, four in 10 Americans (41 percent) say that they are doing significantly or somewhat better at managing their stress compared to 10 years ago, with a nearly equal proportion (39 percent) reporting that their ability to manage stress has stayed the same."

So 40% of people feel less need for a therapist, 40% the same, and perhaps 20% more need.

But we still haven't seen his real birth certificate. The one that they provided may have been accurate, but wouldn't qualify as an original birth certificate. Nor have we see his country liege transcripts, etc. I don't think it the least bit paranoid to wonder whether something is being intentionally hidden from the American people. So, no surprise that photos purportedly of Obama sitting with a boyfriend, of his purported real father, etc are normal fare for part of the country.

As for Seth Rich - we still don't really know why he died or why the DC police were so incurious about it. But we pretty much know by now that the Russians weren't the ones hacking the DNC and putting the results on Wikileaks. It almost assuredly was an inside job, given the testimony of Julian Assange, and the transfer times. I think that it is highly likely that this was reason that the Dems refused to let the FBI look at their email server. They were pretty obviously hiding something. Could Rich have been the one to download the server data and given it to Wikileaks? I think significantly more likely than that it was the Ruskies. Of course, it could have been another one of the disillusioned Bernie Bros DNC staffers. But it almost assuredly wasn't the Russians.

Finally, the alleged pedophilia. The sex scandal that is breaking right now, with more and more arrests, is no weirder than the idea of a pizza joint run as a front for a pedophilia ring. We have a cult with a lot of BDSM, etc, and more arrests last week, including a very rich booze heiress. Bill Clinton, of course, was a frequent visitor to Jeffry Epstein's Pedophile Island - and, yes, I know people with enough wealth that they can afford junkets out of this country to have sex with underaged adolescent girls. It appears that much of the world is more than willing to take our money to allow our rich men to deflower their virgins. Was more going on at that Pizza joint. Who knows. I do know though that the rich and powerful are more likely to be what most of us consider perverts - because they can get away with it.

I consider myself a healthy skeptic. I question both the ones obsessing about these things, and those who deny them as being impossible.

This time it is Judge Napolitano. No, he does not suffer but he pointed out something interesting in a clip I heard the other day.

remember Vince Foster? Remember all the questions about whether it was suicide or murder? Remember all the conspiracy theories?

Remember who was the lead investigator who ruled suicide? And, who some claimed did a cover up of murder by the HAG?

None other than Supreme Court Justice (nominee) Brett Kavanaugh.

Forget about whether or not Vince Foster was murdered. I'm not interested in discussing it at this point. As a wise woman once said "What difference does it make?"

Judge Nap's point was that if the Dems oppose Kavanaugh, someone will be sure to remind the public of this as a way to tank the nomination. If nobody does, President Trump either directly or indirectly will be sure to remind us. Perhaps with a nuclear tipped Tweet saying "Judge Kavanaugh is a fine justice. He did a completely honest investigation of the Vince Foster death. It is sad that people are talking about this. #SupportKavanaugh"

Do the Demmies really want Vince Foster brought back into public discourse a month or two before the election?

Here's two more scenarios I can see:

1) The Dems, not wanting Vince Foster and all that baggage brought up, decide not to oppose Kavanaugh. This alienates a large part of their base. It also gives juice to upstarts like AOC. President Trump tells us "We dodged a bullet there. We may not be so lucky next time. Vote in more Repos.

2) The Dems vigorously oppose Judge K. President Trump goes on the warpath doing rallies and such on the theme of this opposition is why Republicans need to turn out and elect more republican Senators and Congresspeople.

2a) if they somehow do manage to stop Judge K, It will infuriate Repos and cause them to tun out massively.

President Trump is no politician according to informed LLRs and Demmies so this is probably all just wild speculation.

buwaya said...

These are stupid times, but not that stupid.

The fundamental conflicts that feed some of the stupidity are real and, in the context of history, entirely normal expressions of human nature.
Essentially, you have an irrevocably split culture.
You are not Americans anymore, but Americans A and Americans B, and probably C and D.

Its like the European Reformation, where it was once Christendom from Estonia to Portugal, in 1520, and a few decades later, no longer.

Some things that seem stupid are just predictable phenomena from the current context that cannot be reconciled with an older context. If one has not adjusted context, or is unable to comprehend an alien one, then these things make little sense.

Anxiety attacks by those susceptible could be rational, if one understands that they are born out of a reasonable understanding that the immense power of the state are now in the hands of an enemy people, the hated other tribe. It takes a while for such understandings to make it into open discourse, and we are not quite there yet, though I see it breaking through in spots.

Since we are talking about cultures we are talking about different cultural traits and different inculcated personality types. Where some peoples deal with anxiety by going to psychiatrists others purchase AR-15s.

A comment, recently, and I don't recall by who, was on the speed and fundamental nature of your American cultural split.

It was about the cultural gulf today vs that at the time of the US Civil War.
Both sides then agreed about vastly more than what divided them. They both were (largely) devoutly Christian, of overlapping denominations, were steeped in the same intellectual milieu, were similarly educated, and even their political ideals overlapped, except in the subset of critical matters where they didn't.

Today absolutely none of that is true. US culture disagrees about even biological facts. It is getting close to a mutual rejection of humanity.

Ken Burns "Civil War" series of 1990 could not be made today, given its reliance on Shelby Foote, and its acknowledgement of those mutual shared characteristics of the combatants. A PBS "Civil War" today would be extremely different. The America of 1990 was much closer to that of 1865 than 1990 was to 2018. The speed of the divergence is disorienting.

Wait ... "wholesome activities" like bombing and killing. by the likes of the Students for a Democratic Society and Bill Ayres and the Weathermen. Reality showed up close to home at UW-Madison when Sterling Hall was bombed in 1970. In 2010, Althouse remembered and reader Michael Haz had his personal experience with the hippie movement published in this blog.

Michael Haz summarized:

Standing near a fire truck so I could hear its radio I heard a fireman report finding one body in Sterling Hall. Stunned, I stood for a few more minutes than walked back to my apartment.

Two days later I cut my shoulder length hair and notified my landlord that I wouldn't remain as a tenant for the fall term.

I was done with UW and Madison, except for completing my studies. I rented and apartment west of Middleton and commuted, spending as little time on campus as possible. I didn't attend my graduation.

The anti-war movement was a sham; a cover for violent anarchists. It wasn't actually anti-war; it was mostly anti-draft, and nothing more. It was over-indulged white males who didn't want to be conscripted. It would never have happened if there hadn't been a draft.

I don't have a romantic version of the late 60s in my head. I lived through it, it was horrible. Sure, the music was good, the weed was abundant, "liberated" coeds eschewed underwear, and contraceptive sex had no risk. It was still an awful time.

This week, the quarterly GDP number came out. It was a good number; I said it was a good number. But when I pointed out that it was much the same as any one of the best 4 or 5 quarterly numbers in the Obama Administration, the Trump fans here became deranged in their hatred of me and their reactions.

Patiently explaining that I wasn't trying to sell anyone on Obama, and that I didn't vote for Obama was not enough. No matter how many times I say that I am not an Obama supporter, I am still accused of being one. No matter how many times I point out that it was on precisely one occasion that I said that exactly one Rachel Maddow interview was "brilliant" (it won the Emmy for best live news interview of the year), a deranged Althouse commenter like Drago keeps continutally coming back to claim that my general impression of Maddow is that she is "brilliant" (ergo, I am a leftist, is how that is supposed to go).

Look at an unhinged bigot like "langford peel." Look at the assholes among this commentariat who have attacked me, saying that no one should believe me when I say that I am a Republican who voted, albeit extremely reluctantly, for Trump. And the even more exteme assholes who, after my having remarked in legal threads that I am a lawyer, now claim that that cannot be true.

The Althouse comments pages are now filled with nasty, brutish bullies who will accept nothing less than complete support for Trump. And anyone who questions Trump is attacked personally and largely without limit.

There are other "derangement syndromes" out there, no doubt. On the Left and on the Right. But on these pages, the most obvious instances of derangement are on the part of the Trump fans.

Chuck is attacked personally because he’s dishonest, because he’s deranged, because he literally cannot stop himself from whining about Trump regardless of the actual topic at hand, because his comments add nothing to the discussion other than yet another unnecessary demonstration of his lack of character, and most of all, because he is uninteresting.

I wonder what Trump was talking to Sulzberger about. The timing is interesting, as much else, together, cannot be coincidental -

This is important, as there is a multi-front struggle going on. One is by, and through, the US MSM machine. It is indeed a machine, most of it in five media conglomerates, a few "Tech" conglomerates (Amazon, Alphabet/Google, Facebook, etc.), and just one major newspaper not otherwise affiliated, the NYT. Four at least of the conglomerates plus the NYT coordinate news and propaganda, and the "tech" outfits amplify it. As far as the vast majority of the public is concerned, between them these entities are all of the news.

The meeting with Sulzberger was Jul 20, Facebook got blasted by what seems like an insider-driven selloff Jul 26. Moonves of CBS was pinned down by a #metoo expose leaked Jul 26, published the next day, Sulzberger meeting leaked yesterday.

I suspect Trump and co. are making timed moves against the MSM ownership structure, which is where the coordinated propaganda system is directed.

Sulzbergers statement today seems like a deflection of criticism of having met Trump in the first place. Makes one wonder if Trump made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

This is too much to be a coincidence.

The Trump-is-a-liar meme, besides being silly, for the sorts of reasons Bob and Mike give, also misinterprets much of his rhetoric.

He often bullshits, in the technical Frankfurtian sense of not caring about the the truth value of his statements. Of course, it irritated me no end during the campaign. But I now see it a bit differently, since a portion of it is BS with a purpose, a weapon in a political game Trump is playing, an effort to reframe the terms of the fights he is fighting. That is a powerful thing, in fact one of the most powerful things a politician can do. Since the reframing mostly goes in a conservative direction, I am more pleased than I thought I would be.

Example: "Tariffs are the greatest!" In 2016, I would have said, in my fusty Smithian-Ricardian way: no, they aren't. Big Mike would say: hyperbole. I now say, with limited information on what Trump "thinks": he is sending a message, reframing "tariffs" as a weapon to get other to play more fair or favorably with us, ramping up pressure by showing his own confidence. Tariffs are the greatest--until we make decent deal. Of course, the terms of the deal(s) matter, but by comparison with 2016 I am more optimistic that Trump will actually get some results, on that front and others.

If the thought of anybody disagreeing with you creeps you out after 30 seconds, what does that say about your love of diversity? You don’t love it? Maybe you and Langford Peel have more in common than you think!

Everyone believes what I believe in their heart of hearts. Yeah yeah I know you don't see color. Tell me about it when you are in the ATM at midnight and LeRoy walks in the door.

People have a primal, tribal desire and need to associate with their own kind. Difference is not safe and to be avoided if not destroyed. It has been the case all though human history. The Empire that allows the Vandals in is ultimately destroyed.

Keep fooling yourself with your fantasy of diversity. It has never worked over the long haul and never will.

Stick with your own kind.

I’m quite opposed to bigotry (my mom’s parents were both tattooed at Auschwitz; the rest of their families were gassed and incinerated), and I’m not at all anxious about the fact that there are maybe a half dozen neo-Nazi losers in America that feel encouraged by media misrepresentations of what Trump says.

Random Thoughts:

Ronan Farrel I think is a lone actor. I’m am suspicious of the reality of huge conspiracies. I believe a lot more in luck, hard work, incompetence, and cya make things happen in the world. The conspiracy against Trump has surprised me, and not something I thought possible anymore.

The me too movement and exposing of lots of sex scandals is wow. There is a general zero tolerance atmosphere that has caught up with a few. Per cdan there is more to come. What Weinstein got away with was amazing, and there are a lot of others just as guilty. Casting couch and pedophilia seem to be bigger than acknowledged. Podesta’s paintings need to be looked at to be believed. And Epstein’s Island? Lots of stuff going on that everyone knows about, yet nothing to the public.

Trump has been playing with the media for years and is really good at it. Other gop types try, and get burned - Bannon, Etc. Trump is very attuned to the media, and probably knows ahead of time of stuff that is gonna break. And he uses this knowledge to his advantage.

Journilist does continue to live in some form, and keeps the msm in sync.

Big tech is biased against conservatives, and Trump may do something about it... highlighting shadowbanning is just a start.

Sure, if you dishonestly define “hang out with” so you can smear people who disagree with you. It’s a good trick.

Being anti Israel, including accusations of racism, apartheid, etc. seems to be a thing among the global elite, which Ronan is part of.

Same thing about harping about racism, sexism, etc in the us.

While they ignore worse actions in the Islamic world.

Strange world we live in, full of people with double standards.

Finding a Weinstein victim sounded like shooting fish in a barrel. The true issue was getting it published.

That group chanting "Jews will not replace us" was organized by Occupy wall street.

Or, marching, and not abandoning a march just because a handful of lunatics tried to hijack your protest.

Seems a lot more benign than some guy with a grin intentionally posing for a picture with Louis Farrakhan. I guess affiliating with bigots is okay when you do it on purpose.

We denounce racists. We note that you have more in common with Peel than we do. We denounce him more than you denounce La Raza. Oh they changed their name. Same people same goal. BLM is specifically racist. Nothing from you people.

The left never denounces their racists.

An entire mob of leftist shitheads in Portland yelling “F***ing N***er!” at black ICE agents for a month.

Nothing from the leftists.

Your entire political movement is predicated on racism and spoils.

You are naked to everyone now with nothing useful to offer the world.
