I just hope Burlington, VT isn’t dumping millions of gallons of raw sewage in your lake too. Probably Trump’s fault since there hasn’t been a Republican in Burlington since Eisenhower built that damn highway from NYC and swarmed the state with hippies.

If MadisonMan stops by, I’m looking for historical cloud cover data for Wisconsin (e.g. Wausau, Richland Center, Rhinelander, ... average percent cloud cover by month). I don’t know if this data exists.

Abolished in Madison?

Now that's taking the notion of sanctuary city above and beyond.

The most politically polarized place in the U.S. might not be in Washington, D.C., or the halls of Congress, but in Milwaukee. It’s already the most segregated city in the country in terms of race and poverty -- more than Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit or Los Angeles. Now, it’s become one of the most politically divided places as well.

Americans in general have become more partisan in recent years. But the Milwaukee schism is larger than in other places, and it’s getting bigger. As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently reported, metro Milwaukee has grown more politically segregated in almost every election since Nixon. Metropolitan Milwaukee, according to the paper, has become “the most polarized part of a polarized state in a polarized nation.”

Why is liberal Milwaukee a diversity nightmare?

Disparities are common across the United States, the report said, but the gap between the quality of life for whites and blacks is much worse in Dane County, the epicenter for progressive politics in Wisconsin and often ranked among one of the best places in America to live.

Rural or urban, north or south, across the United States, Dane County is “rock bottom” when it comes to racial disparities, Jacobson said, adding, “It’s really jarring.”

How is this possible?

Trump's tweets today are a masterpiece of provoking the Democrats and their allies in the press. This is easily the most entertaining presidency in our country's history. The way Trump seems to ride upon all the anger and chaos is a near miracle. I can't imagine anyone else pulling it off. That's why his eccentricities and pecadillos don't bother me at all. Trump is a package deal.

Mark said...

Ah, you're toying with us, playing all innocent.

We all know how it is possible. They have never apologized for, much less renounced, their history as the plantation party of slavery, secession and segregation.

Go to any of the progressive paradises, where the one-percenters are all leftists, and you will find blacks consigned to fourth class citizenship.

Mark said...

Take a look at D.C., where white boy progressives control the District Council, pushing progressive initiatives, including gentrifying black families who have lived there for generations right out of the city.

I will say that it has been extremely annoying trying to watch the Tour de France on NBC Sports, where it is five minutes of commercials with a minute or so of coverage.

And that many commercials, they are the same ones over and over and over.

Despite what he says, I'm pretty sure the mayor of Madison hates black people. Blacks have always greatly suffered during his time in office, according to the local newspapers. What other explanation is there?

Now he's running for governor.

I had a thought after reading this:

INTERESTING FT PIECE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS: The Chinese are wary of Donald Trump’s creative destruction: The president is the first US leader in decades to challenge China on multiple fronts.

When RR fired PATCO, the Soviets sat up and took notice even tho TRAITOR TIP and co. Said ignore him, we will still deal with you. When Trump fired Tillerson over Iran, why didn’t the Europeans start paying attention? It was my understanding Trump said....deal in our favor and Tillerson said no, our allies want it this way. They tried to align with China against us but the price was too high. So they have to meet their NATO obligations and negotiate protections.

I think that the Europeans have something to hide on Iran and they’re going to give up what they feel they can afford to to get Trump to back off.

I'm working a fire in CO. The one I started on is pretty much contained, but several others have broken out so I'll be here longer. 12 to 14 hour days, with little down time to check the news. It has been good, not checking the news. Pray for the folks actually fighting the fire and the residents in the way of the fire. Passing thru a recently burned forest that is still smoldering is a sobering experience. I'd hate to see an entire community that way.

In Chicago it is well understood that the CPD will defend the rich districts against the poor districts. Otherwise the rich and tourists would disappear. Funny story, when the red line south of 69th shut down for construction mag mile crime went to zero. Milwaukee is a better welfare payoff and grows on that from Chicago Immigrants. When rom passes the torch we will see if the elites are still protected. The best little option is to live in the Medical Mile off Taylor St., the cops protect the hospitals and everything grows.

I seem to remember some pushback from some European countries during the negotiations of the Iran deal, including Britain, France, and Germany. Almost as if they felt Obama was giving Iran too much. Now I'm sure the Europeans also wanted access to Iranian energy, but I doubt there is anything much worse the Europeans are hiding. I think in time what we will figure out is that Obama wanted to dramatically strengthen Iran's position in the region so it could be either an outright hegemony or at least a counterbalance to the Sunnis. It kind of makes sense becasue Valerie Jarret I believe grew up in Iran or at least spent some formative years there. It is possible she holds warmer feelings towards Iran than the Arab states. I just don't think a strong multipolar region makes a region much safer. Usually safety and stability comes with one really great power that is willing to hold itself in abeyance, until someone else acts out.

This is true. When flash mobs broke out of teenagers congregating in areas of the Magnificent mile and other touristy areas and basically stealing what they could en masse, the police showed up the next day and for a while en masse to deter it.

Open thread? OK, I'll vent.

If you know pineapple palm trees, you will know this:
They need regular pruning because they produce a lot of large fronds that hang down blocking streets and driveways.
The fronds have at their base these incredibly sharp spikes about 6 inches long and tipped like a hypodermic needle.

Everytime I prune one, one these spikes inevitably pierces my skin somewhere. I always tell myself that it won't happen this time, but I'm always wrong.
Yesterday, while pruning one, I jammed my foot into one of these spikes. It went right through my shoe, and into my big toe from top to bottom and buried itself 1-1/2 inches into my toe. I could feel the point of it almost exiting the bottom of my toe, and it broke off right at the skin surface leaving nothing sticking out. I tried to pull it out, but gave up quickly since I knew I would need a tetanus shot and antibiotics anyway. I went to the local clinic. The doctor there pussied out and said he couldn't do it, and I need to go to the emergency room. I begged him to handle it, but he was afraid of complications and pain. I was not, but he told me I would have to to the ER. I did. 3 hours of painful waiting, finally a nerve block to the toe and a beautiful young doctorette pulled it out. Total time spent on me was about 3 minutes. Estimated bill was $2,500 FOR 3 MINUTES WORK! I have a $2000 deductible because Obama and the Dems are liars, and I no longer have my plan or my doctor.

If I knew it would take that long and cost that much, I would have pulled it out myself one way or another, and then go and get the meds from my doctor. The spike had no barbs, so they come out smoothly, but I expected an hour at worst and a couple hundred bucks to pull out a thorn by professionals.

What really pissed me off though was the inefficiency, waste, and disregard of the doctors working there. There were people with blood running down their heads, and hair and clothing soaked in blood from assaults. Lots of people in pain and looking terrible. We all sat there on chairs in a hallway watching the doctors have casual conversations over and over, moving from room to room only to start up another conversation, rarely attending to anyone. In the 3 hours I was there, only one person was treated and discharged besides me. Everyone else was still there when I left, still covered in blood and needing stitches and pain relief. W.T.F.? I sat there with my painful 3 minute issue and watched my doctor discuss lunch, go to lunch, return and discuss some other bullshit for hours. She didn't have 3 minutes to spare in 3 hours? She could have treated everyone there and sent them home all by herself in that time, and there were other doctors doing the same socializing among the bleeding. It was not like this 8 years ago.

DC is a different place, where a Black man and wife, especially veterans, can make $200,000 per anum easy (Dept of Agriculture G 4's etc). They live on the North East fringe and do well.

Bagoh20, my sympathy. I have watched the feminization of Medicine for the past 25 years.

Medical students are now only interested in shift work and vacations. They know they will all be on salary. Obamacare destroyed the medical system and I don't think it can come back.

I keep hoping that docs drop out and go to cash practices, which make sense. If you are a doc, you have to drop Medicare and all insurance , which is a big step.

If it is any consolation, I sat with a friend, whose chair collapsed in a sidewalk cafe in Rome, and lacerated his arm deeply, for three hours while we waited for a non-English speaking doctor to come and put a few stitches in his arm and we made out cruise ship by 15 minutes. Had it sailed, we had no passports and its next stop was Malta.

The cab driver charged us $500 to take us to Civittavechia, where the ship was about to leave without us

My partner's step daughter died on the table at a well known medical center in San Diego after, as best I can tell, the wrong operation was done on her for a perforated ulcer. She was 40.

I am now a patient and not optimistic.

"The best little option is to live in the Medical Mile off Taylor St., the cops protect the hospitals and everything grows."

I was in grad school in the early 80's when Taylor street was an old Italian neighborhood on the north side of the street and housing projects on the south side. Crime on the north side was virtually non-existent. It was well known that the Mafia had family there. It was one of the safest places to live in Chicago.

Mark said...

Meanwhile, the D.C. regime's idea of revitalizing Anacostia and other distressed areas is tearing down existing affordable housing, building luxury housing (you need $200 K to live there), which caters to the white progressive gentry, doing nothing really to improve prospects for low-income blacks.

Meanwhile, white boy progressive councilmember David Grosso wants to bring back the selling of black women like chattel articles of commerce (well, the renting of their bodies anyway).

That's true except the neighborhood was Sicilian and not really Italian. That makes it worse. Thx for the story. I have a 3 flat on W. Fillmore, and the Jane Adams homes are going to be re-created this year. Too bad for me. Rosebud on the north side of Taylor is one of my favorite restauraunts.

I have been a long time reader- over 14 years now-of Cownen's and Tabarrok's blog. The intellectual quality of the commenters was once among the highest on the internet, but it rapidly degraded about the time Cowen started writing for The New York Times on a regular basis, and has only gotten worse since he moved his writing to Bloomberg. By the time they turned the comments off, they weren't worth reading any longer- no great loss.

@bagoh20. My ER experience was not as bad as yours. When I wrecked my motorcycle, I screwed my ankle up badly. It was a bloody mess. I waited patiently in the waiting room chair while the ER staffed wandered about aimlessly. It was not crowded. After an hour or so, I decided to take my high-top shoe off. As blood started streaming down the floor, they had me on the table in a couple of minutes.

Visited a very liberal friend in Chicago a couple of years ago and asked about the crime rate. He told me that, "no one cares if black people kill each other." Seems to be true I guess.

--------------

Spent three days last week in the ER in Wilmington, NC with Mrs. Tank (who is seriously ill). The doctors and nurses there were quite good. Everyone seemed to be working quite hard processing many, many people with a wide variety of problems. As a result of Mrs. Tank's illness and a few of my own issues, we've spent a lot of time in ER's and hospitals this passed year and, generally, been very favorably impressed with the doctors and nurses and support staff.

I had good luck taking my father to the ER with a bleeding ulcer. He has Medicare and Tricare, the $25k total one-week hospital bill cost him nothing. Had to send the $400 ambulance bill back through to get it all paid, but everything else was painless. And they saved his life.

I regularly watched the Travel Channel coverage of the Tour de France for many years from the mid 90s through the year Floyd Landis won, but was stripped of the title. I watched the coverage after that for a few years off and on, but I noticed that the strategies seemed to change as the drug testing regimen took hold- there were fewer break-aways among the top contenders. The race became dominated by sprints at the finish between people who were not real contenders, even in the mountain stages. I found it increasingly boring and stopped watching any of it around 2013 or so.

What’s going on is we are looking for a rural Wisconsin property for astronomical observing. I want to build an observatory. Most important is darkness, and that means either up north or a few pockets in the west-central part of the state (think Richland Centerish). The question is, basically, is it significantly cloudier up north vs the west-central part of the state? I had the impression it was but would like real data.

Thanks for your efforts.
