Reiner's son Nick has been arrested for the murders. Assuming Nick Reiner is indeed the murderer, he was certainly angry at his father, but it's absurd to think that the son's anger toward the father is about the father's recent political expression.
Virtually everyone else has responded to the news of the murder with praise for Reiner's work as an actor and director and has chosen to leave politics for another day. Trump went to the complete opposite extreme, speaking not just about his political opposition to the man but blaming Reiner for his own death and making it all about Trump and larding his statement with self-praise — surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness! — to the point where many readers will wonder whether this is satire.
I mean, is it possible that Trump believes he is doing satire in honor of a great satirist?
I was just listening to Reiner on Bill Maher's podcast, and he was saying that when "This Is Spinal Tap" came out 41 years ago, many people did not get it. They thought it was a real documentary. Reiner says: "Some rockers — some rock and roll people — took it seriously and they got mad.... Like Steven Tyler was upset... and then that Axl Rose from Guns 'n' Roses... and, and you know, God bless him.... Ozzy Osbourne didn't love it...."But even if Trump believes it's funny, and even if Reiner had the same sense of humor, Trump, the President of the United States, should not be emitting insane trash like that.

If it’s a puzzle, he failed, because it’s the president’s job to communicate clearly to the country and the world. It's not always a case of "it takes on to know one". Reiner made TDS part of his public persona for years. It's hard not to think of that first. Recognizing hate doesn't automatically make you a hater. It's true that some people will hate back, but others will just be disappointed that someone whose work they admired became so focused on hating.

Reiner was a Hollywood hack who made movies for money and some of them were liked by broad mass of Americans. IOW, the same people who liked Porkeys II and Death Wish III.
Of course being a popular Producer/Director takes a certain amount of creative talent, but you're mostly taking a story that's already been written. Then hiring a screenwriter, getting the studio to finance it, and then massaging the original story into a film script. The rest is just technique and hiring the right actors.
That's how mass commerical films that Reiner produced and directed got made. LIke I said, he was on the same level as 50 other Hollywood hacks.
Another point is that you can be an incredibly successful film director even though 90 percent of the USA never sees your films.
