Here's the trailer.

Rob directed it and his son co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Elisofon.

I could see why police would think Nick is a person of interest, because of this past. But I also suspect People made up quotes and did a horrible bit of journalism.

Trying to make art out of your life is often a good thing for the artist. Not necessarily good art. Not really a movie I want to see, with an unlikable protagonist and a passive-aggressive conflict. At least, that’s the vibe I get from the trailer.

Interesting that the son is mad at the father for his political ambitions. I think Rob Reiner was contemplating running for office at some point. But elected not to do so for personal reasons.

A thought popped into my head this morning when I remembered that Reiner and his wife were murdered last night: was he a Zionist? Grok told me no, that he supported Israel but also criticized them. But that “supported Israel” part gave me pause in a weekend where Jews were targeted in Australia, perhaps targeted at the most Jewish of the Ivies (I checked this: their 24% Jewish student body is the highest percentage), and now a Jewish director and his Jewish wife are stabbed to death. Antisemitism is not just on the rise, it’s evolving and exploding. Bad times.

The Romans knew what to do with people who murdered their parents. From Google:

The traditional Roman punishment for patricide (killing one's parent) was the horrific "poena cullei" (penalty of the sack), where the convicted was sewn into a leather sack with a dog, rooster, snake, and monkey, then thrown into water to drown, often being attacked by the animals during the process. This severe punishment, described by jurists like Modestinus (3rd century CE) and documented from the 1st century BC onwards, emphasized the unique gravity of harming one's own parent

I wonder if the guy was on anti-depressants to help against his addiction. In any case, there seems to be mental illness involved, with the heroin use as more of a symptom than a cause.

Being an author and being a director are different skillsets. Both are needed to make a movie. Rob Reiner was a skilled director. Some people have a very hard time at Christmas. I had a better life but still, in my family, we always sang all five verses of this song at Christmas time. Sort of in the middle of the carols - not at the beginning or the end - just there, acknowledging a certain kind of moment. What is faith, after all, but living by the evidence of things unseen amid the evidence of things seen.

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace of earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along th'unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head:
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men."

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

“Rob Reiner didn't bring these to us. These fine authors did.”

Movies are a collaboration and the director gets the most credit because they bring the parts from script to acting all together in a way that works if the film is considered good or great. Screenwriters should perhaps get more credit but the director certainly deserves credit if their adaptation works well.

There are many directors in the history of Hollywood [or film] who did not write screenplays yet were directors of great films. David Lean [Lawrence of Arabia], Michael Curtiz [Casablanca], John Ford [The Searchers] are three that come to mind. Reiner was respected as a director.

Many drug addicts have comorbid serious mental illness. "Drug addiction" is often self-medicating willful action, when mental health interventions don't work, or aren't even available in sufficient quantity, quality, and duration. Mental health interventions are very expensive, difficult to obtain, and legally nearly impossible to impose upon unwilling adult. Ergo "homelessness", along with "drug addiction", mostly unresolved by huge grants to ineffective "homeless advocates" failing to address underlying mental illness.

Not surprised Reiner's daughter assumed perpetrator was Reiner's son. We've friends and family with young adult children who have serious medical illness, living in family home, not receiving capable medical treatment, where everyone is worried about likelihood of an eventual huge explosive violent argument catastrophically destroying the family. I'm so sorry for the Reiner family, for they most of endured a world of heartbreak, and pervasive fear, for so many years.

RCOCEAN II said...

How much credit a director should get varies from movie to movie. In the case of a Few Good Men. The film based on a Sorkin broadway play. Reiner then not only produced and directed the film, he adapted the play for Film by rewriting it with Sorkin and William Goldman.

In the case of Princess Bride. Reiner directed and co-produced it along with adopting it to film with help from the novelist William Goldman.

So Reiner just wasn't just plopped into the directors seat to say "action" and "cut"

You conflate "respect" with "commercial funding and recognition." The Academy Awards are where the coke sniffing, bed hopping, gold digging, marriage-of-the-week climbers in the Academy put on fancy clothes and act out "sophistication" as they understand it. The Grammy (music) awards are similar, as they were long nicknamed the "granny" awards. Some of those went to A&M Records founder Herb Alpert...despite unclear musical talent.

Hollywood's corrupt commercialization follows from which movies stand to make money, get attention from politicians, and please the studio owners. Rob Reiner didn't make that kind of movie, but he was indeed highly respected.

Hmmm, I would say one doesn't have to win to be respected. Only five directors are nominated each year but there are always more than five good films a year.

Note that there are many directors including Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Sidney Lumet and Quentin Tarantino who did not won an Oscar for directing. I would not say they were not respected.

But please note that But Reiner did get nominated three times for Outstanding Directorial Achievement by the Director’s Guild of America [which are his direct peers] and four times for the Golden Globes. More importantly he made three or four films that are touchstones in American cinema in the 1980's [all made between 1984 and 1989] – Stand By Me, This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally. That's a pretty good run. Ben Stiller said they were formative to his generation.

I watched the interview with Rob and Nick Reiner.
1. All was not well in Reiner land. The dynamic between Rob and Nick was visibly strained: Rob was trying to be very solicitous, while Nick was rather unsociable. At the end, Nick essentially said he had no job and no prospects.
2. Rob’s anti-Trump rant was so over the top. If this was how he discussed politics at home, I’d start taking drugs too. Folks, don’t do this to your kids. Kids take this stuff really seriously. Bill Maher says the same things, but he doesn’t raise your anxiety level to 11 when he does it.

Rob and Nick Reiner had a "very loud" argument at Conan O'Brien's Christmas party the night before the murders.
While the exact topic of the argument has not been publicly confirmed, sources indicate the argument was over Nick's long-standing substance abuse and mental health issues.
Key details regarding the argument:
Audibility: The argument was loud enough that other guests at the A-list party could hear it.
Behavior: Multiple attendees observed Nick "acting strangely" and appearing to be "totally f**ked up" at the event.
Departure: Rob and Michele Reiner left the party shortly after the explosive argument, with some sources noting guests felt uncomfortable around Nick.
Context: Michele Reiner had reportedly confided in friends in the months prior that she and Rob were at their "wits' end" with Nick's issues and felt they had "tried everything".
