On another thread I was talking about the brilliance of Stanley Crouch. He was a jazz critic and he later branched out into discussing politics, including race. Really honest guy, and a great writer. My favorite writer on race, actually. I haven't read him in a couple of decades but now I want to go back and read more of his stuff.
It's funny but another jazz critic, Nat Hentoff, would also branch out into politics, and he became a ferocious free speech advocate and a fearless pro-lifer.
I have a cousin who just sold his house in an upscale neighborhood of Austin. He can't decide whether to purchase a downsized house in another upscale neighborhood or move to Europe until this awful regime is voted out in 2028. He's the type that posts all the internet articles claiming Trump is a dictator, Trump has dementia, everything is awful, Medicare and Social Security will be taken away, you name it. I hope he chooses Europe.
An acquaintance of mine posted a link to an MSNBC (?) article about a family of mother, daughter and granddaughter were arrested in Milwaukee for speaking Spanish. They are from Puerto Rico and therefore US citizens. The usual "Nazi" outrage ensued. I tried to find if anyone else had the article or if it was verified. Nope. Just that one article based out of some "source" in Puerto Rico. John Henry, do you know anything about it? Obviously the outraged ones haven't bothered to check into its veracity. I've learned to do that with anything that seems to be a bit over the top. Both sides.

CA Atty Gen Bonta says the riots were mostly peaceful until Trump sent in the National Guard. It's all Trumps fault.
An ABC reporter said the protests "could turn very volatile if you move law enforcement in there in the wrong way and turn what is just a bunch of people having fun watching cars burn into a massive confrontation and altercation between officers and demonstrators."
Ducks on Parade! Well, I suppose it is better than tanks, artillery, and thousands and thousands of marching soldiers on parade. Let's just pray they don't start goose-stepping.
BG - regarding the viral report from back in January that some Puerto Rican family was detained in Milwaukee when overheard speaking Spanish: nothing from that report originally spread by Telemundo was ever verified. The (D) governor’s office, a Milwaukee (D) Hispanic alderman, the local and surrounding police offices, local media, etc. all reported that nothing in the viral report was confirmed; ICE denied it also. It was completely fabricated, but apparently some suckers fell for it and are still repeating it. Adding to their gullibility is the fact that if you google the viral report, Google’s AI Overview repeats tons of details about the false report and public reaction to it, while only making tiny mention about the fact that no one (even biased interests) were able to verify anything in the report. Talk about fake news!
Someone in this country illegally who commits a crime, any crime, especially violent crime, is making war upon the United States, by definition, and is also then, by definition, an unlawful combatant. I'm referring to anything over and above the fact that if they're here unlawfully- a crime in itself- they are, also by definition, invaders.
Time to start giving all of them the due process they are entitled to as unlawful combatants, trial by court martial, with sentences determined by the court. Using the UCMJ for guidance. There's a lot of capital crimes in the UCMJ.
If anyone wants to make the argument that by attacking Americans or violating the law they are not making war upon the United States, explain your logic. Especially if it's a violent crime. Such as rioting while carrying the flag of another nation.
I had to wait for about twenty Canada geese crossing a four lane road at midday. Fortunately traffic was light and most drivers here are considerate. The political leader has the monopoly of force. And Trump is showing on the streets of Los Angeles that he has the monopoly of force and that he knows how to mobilize and use it. All who care to look are being warned.
We're doing Thomas Hobbs here, not George Washington.
On The View today Whoopi Goldberg asked whatever happened to State's Rights, in the context of a rant about Trump calling out the National Guard and Marines. I hope someone took her over to the side at some point and gently explained the Civil War to her.
Somehow the comment thread from the post on Shellenberger’s and Reich’s dueling articles about LA degenerated into a discussion of Bloody Sunday at the Edmund Pettus bridge in Alabama. I’m disappointed that, with the entire Internet at their fingertips, so few people seem interested in actually researching a historical event. There’s a lot of information out there; why not read first and bloviate later.
I was especially irritated that Freder-the-idiot seems to be assuming that the Civil Rights demonstrators were blocking the bridge. The demonstrators were marching. They only blocked the bridge in the sense that it takes longer for hundreds of people walking takes longer to cross a bridge than an automobile.
There were three marches. The first was Bloody Sunday, where state troopers engaged in what is best described as a police riot and clubbed peaceful marchers unconscious. The second march was terminated when word arrived that a judge had issued a temporary injunction. Thx third time the marchers got safely across the bridge and all the way to Montgomery because they were escorted by the Alabama National Guard after it was nationalized by Lyndon Johnson. at all times the marchers were truly peaceful and nonviolent, which IX in marked contrast to the people who throw chunks of cinder blocks and burn cars.

Goodbye Derbyshire, goodbye Crouch. I highly recommend George Schuyler, raised under Jim Crow, navy veteran, commie-hater, once the most famous black opinion writer in black publications in the 40s and 50s. Until he joined the JBS and called MLK a commie and a few other choice things. Schuyler wrote detective fiction based in Ethiopia and wrote for Mencken. His only daughter died in Vietmam. His wife killed herself after that. The daughter was a correspondent and a concert pianist. Many libraries have a black newspapers collection digitized. Use webcat to find the main one in NYC. Fascinating stuff. Not what you expect. You can really see how the Communist Party, USA put the screws into them and are largely responsible for their failure to overcome our segregation of them and enable them to thrive as middle-class Americans, as times changed. Schuyler saw it.

From Stanley Crouch's wikipedia page
Crouch befriended Ralph Ellison and Albert Murray, who influenced his thinking in a direction less centered on race. He stated with regard to Murray's influence, "I saw how important it is to free yourself from ideology. When you look at things solely in terms of race or class, you miss what is really going on."
Attended 50th HS reunion this past weekend. Went with trepidation, left with much appreciation of our brain’s ability to remember things from decades prior….and also not remember things from decades prior. Glad I went. We don’t change, but we do soften.
I've always been a music guy, not a lyrics guy. Probably because I destroyed my hearing at a Who concert many years ago by standing right next to a speaker bigger than I was. So my ability to hear lyrics is questionable. In my younger days, I really did think that Pete Townshend was singing Let Milo Open the Door. I didn't know who Milo was, but I loved that song.
En Vogue was one of those acts that had a song that I really like, Free Your Mind. I never went to their concerts or bought any of their stuff. It was one of those random songs on the airwaves that you hear. And I actually heard some of the lyrics in 1992. "Free your mind, the rest will follow. Be colorblind, don't be so shallow."
I'm on board with freeing your mind, especially from racial thinking. Some people mock this dream as impossible. And maybe it is, I don't know. But it's the way our brains should work.
The video opens with a black girl surrounded by skinheads.
Then we cut to a drawing of an old school white racist from a century ago. And in front of this drawing, we have a chimp, or a monkey.
So already that's a couple of striking visuals to open the video. This girl is surrounded by skinheads who hate her (presumably), or at least, they're really crowding her and making her uncomfortable. And then you have the hateful yelling guy with his eyes closed, and the dehumanizing monkey, or chimp. And then you have the "we are the world" image with humanity happy and everybody's getting along. And then the really, really hot lead singer does a prance on a catwalk while all of humanity looks up to her.
Love the song, love the lyrics. (Had to look them up because I can't hear much of the lyrics).
I wear tight clothing, high-heeled shoes It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute no, no I like rap music, wear hip-hop clothes That doesn't mean that I'm out sellin' dope, no, no, no Oh my, forgive me for having straight hair, no It doesn't mean there's another blood in my heir, yeah, yeah I might date another race or colour It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers Why, oh why must it be this way? (Oh, oh, oh, oh) Before you can read me You got to learn how to see me I said Free your mind And the rest will follow Be colour-blind Don't be so shallow Free your mind And the rest will follow Be colour-blind Don't be so shallow So I'm a sista Buy things with cash That really doesn't mean that all my credit's bad Oh So why dispute me and waste my time? Because you really think the price is high for me I can't look without being watched, no You rang my buy before I made up my mind Oww Oh, now attitude Why even bother? I can't change your mind You can't change my colour Why, oh why must it be this way? (Oh, oh, oh, oh) Before you can read me You got to learn how to see me I said Free your mind And the rest will follow Be colour-blind Don't be so shallow Free your mind And the rest will follow Be colour-blind Don't be so shallow Free your mind And the rest will follow Be colour-blind Don't be so shallow Free your mind And the rest will follow Be colour-blind Don't be so shallow Free your mind Why, oh, why must it be this way? Before you can read me You got to learn how to see me I said Free your mind, and the rest will follow Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow Free your mind, and the rest will follow Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow Free your mind, and the rest will follow Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow Free your mind, and the rest will follow Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow Free your mind
Speaking of Sunrise, I blame Trump—"Fight! Fight! Fight!"—for this fracas: "Chaos in Sunrise"
It's a low key war with Canada going on. I am kind of rooting for Canada a little bit because a loss will be so humiliating it might take a while for the country to get over it. I live on the border, and the restaurants here are struggling. I like it that the roads are not clogged with Quebecois cyclists, but the anti American rhetoric that the Liberals used to hold on to power by their fingernails has had some unfortunate effects.
might be the only person not following this story, but doesn't the governor have to call out the National Guard?
…sounds like protecting Federal buildings, property, employees…prisoners. There’s also insurrection options, thins used as recently as the 1990s but Hawaiian judges and law profs say Republicans aren’t allowed to use laws on the books if they haven’t been used lately…barring those, Remember ‘novel legal theories’ that allow lefties to act in unprecedented ways, at least until the Supremes get around to reminding them they can’t…
Eva Marie said... “It’s disrespectful to the audience to hire actors who can’t sing and then not dub their voices. They did the same thing in Les Miserables. Anne Hathaway butchered I Dreamed a Dream.”
The thing I remember most about the film version of Mamma Mia! is Pierce Brosnan singing.
I might be the only person not following this story, but doesn't the governor have to call out the National Guard? ---------------------- 10 U.S. Code § 12406 - National Guard in Federal service:
Whenever— (1) the United States, or any of the Commonwealths or possessions, is invaded or is in danger of invasion by a foreign nation; (2) there is a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States; or (3) the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States; the President may call into Federal service members and units of the National Guard of any State in such numbers as he considers necessary to repel the invasion, suppress the rebellion, or execute those laws. Orders for these purposes shall be issued through the governors of the States or, in the case of the District of Columbia, through the commanding general of the National Guard of the District of Columbia.
Eva and Rocco, ref non-singing actors trying to sing: it does break the fourth wall. Which is a pain if you’re looking for high-quality interpretation. But if you just want to have fun watching big stars engage in a very high-budget community theatrical, it’s not so bad.
Mamma Mia had hardly any good singers, so the concept probably worked better than Les Miz, where you had Russell Crowe up against Hugh Jackman. It was like the production couldn’t make up its mind.
In my family, we have men who always want to pay for dinner. My grandfather on my Mom's side, always wanted to pay. My father always wanted to pay. And my aunt's second husband always wanted to pay. Not "most of the time." Always.
This was only a problem if two or more of these family members were trying to eat together.
Meanwhile, I've been accepting free meals my whole life. "That's cool," I say, as somebody else feeds me. I am greedy, maybe I got a little gluttony, but I am definitely a peace-keeper. You want to pay, that is great. No argument from me.
My first girlfriend, always wanted to go Dutch. "I'm paying," I would say to that. I don't know why. I just wanted to stomp those damn Dutch, with their neutral Swiss tactics, into the ground. "We're just two independent contractors who happen to be sitting at the same table." Not on my watch! We are breaking bread, together. And I'm paying, apparently.

And then you have the "we are the world" image with humanity happy and everybody's getting along. And then the really, really hot lead singer does a prance on a catwalk while all of humanity looks up to her.
Love the song, love the lyrics. (Had to look them up because I can't hear much of the lyrics).
I wear tight clothing, high-heeled shoes
It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute no, no
I like rap music, wear hip-hop clothes
That doesn't mean that I'm out sellin' dope, no, no, no
Oh my, forgive me for having straight hair, no
It doesn't mean there's another blood in my heir, yeah, yeah
I might date another race or colour
It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers
Why, oh why must it be this way?
(Oh, oh, oh, oh)
Before you can read me
You got to learn how to see me
I said
Free your mind
And the rest will follow
Be colour-blind
Don't be so shallow
Free your mind
And the rest will follow
Be colour-blind
Don't be so shallow
So I'm a sista
Buy things with cash
That really doesn't mean that all my credit's bad
Oh
So why dispute me and waste my time?
Because you really think the price is high for me
I can't look without being watched, no
You rang my buy before I made up my mind
Oww
Oh, now attitude
Why even bother?
I can't change your mind
You can't change my colour
Why, oh why must it be this way?
(Oh, oh, oh, oh)
Before you can read me
You got to learn how to see me
I said
Free your mind
And the rest will follow
Be colour-blind
Don't be so shallow
Free your mind
And the rest will follow
Be colour-blind
Don't be so shallow
Free your mind
And the rest will follow
Be colour-blind
Don't be so shallow
Free your mind
And the rest will follow
Be colour-blind
Don't be so shallow
Free your mind
Why, oh, why must it be this way?
Before you can read me
You got to learn how to see me
I said
Free your mind, and the rest will follow
Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind, and the rest will follow
Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind, and the rest will follow
Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind, and the rest will follow
Be colour-blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind
Speaking of Sunrise, I blame Trump—"Fight! Fight! Fight!"—for this fracas: "Chaos in Sunrise"
It's a low key war with Canada going on. I am kind of rooting for Canada a little bit because a loss will be so humiliating it might take a while for the country to get over it. I live on the border, and the restaurants here are struggling. I like it that the roads are not clogged with Quebecois cyclists, but the anti American rhetoric that the Liberals used to hold on to power by their fingernails has had some unfortunate effects.
I might be the only person not following this story, but doesn't the governor have to call out the National Guard?
And "Paint Your Wagon" is a gem.

"Paint your wagon" is UNQUESTIONABLY Clint Eastwood's BEST musical! and it's one of the better Lee Marvin musicals TOO!
I Talk Too the Trees, is *my* favorite musical number..
Even better than "'I'm Just a Girl That Can't Say NO"
"Wanderin' Star" is a great performance by Lee Marvin. Sorry h8rs.
The inability to discern lyrics dates back to the Kingsmen’s version of “Louie, Louie”:
One line was either, “I smelled the rose in her hair”, or…”

“It’s disrespectful to the audience to hire actors who can’t sing and then not dub their voices. They did the same thing in Les Miserables. Anne Hathaway butchered I Dreamed a Dream.”
The thing I remember most about the film version of Mamma Mia! is Pierce Brosnan singing.

----------------------
10 U.S. Code § 12406 - National Guard in Federal service:
Whenever—
(1) the United States, or any of the Commonwealths or possessions, is invaded or is in danger of invasion by a foreign nation;
(2) there is a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States; or
(3) the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States;
the President may call into Federal service members and units of the National Guard of any State in such numbers as he considers necessary to repel the invasion, suppress the rebellion, or execute those laws.

Is that one of the Fairbrass brothers from Right Said Fred?
