For years, YouTube has removed videos with derogatory slurs, misinformation about Covid vaccines and election falsehoods, saying the content violated the platform’s rules. But since President Trump’s return to the White House, YouTube has encouraged its content moderators to leave up videos with content that may break the platform’s rules rather than remove them, as long as the videos are considered to be in the public interest. Those would include discussions of political, social and cultural issues....
[U]nlike Meta and X, YouTube has not made public statements about relaxing its content moderation. The online video service introduced its new policy in mid-December in training material that was reviewed by The New York Times....
My post title says "once again," because I thanked Trump before, in a dream I had in 2015, recounted here: "Last night, I dreamed that I was talking to someone about Trump.... And then I look over and see that Donald Trump has been eavesdropping.... I thanked him, effusively, for teaching us to have the courage to speak freely." Teaching by example, I believe it was.

Trump says, "you're welcome!"
I'm glad to see them moving in the right direction on this, but I would much prefer to see some kind of standard declared, so that they are accountable to it - even if it is declared by themselves. This is just a shifting whim, as it stands. The whole problem with this dark era that has just passed is that there was no system of rules that was put out there - it was all kept opaque, which reserves all power to those who have tended to be capricious and arbitrary - and these surprises are an important advantage, when you're dealing with individuals and groups that you want to treat as an adversary, without telling them, or admitting to it.
Thankyou, Donald Trump.
And thankyou Ann Althouse for your courage on this blog all these years.
"For years, YouTube has removed videos with derogatory slurs, misinformation about Covid vaccines and election falsehoods,"
No, they took down any video insulted in any way, any protected class favored by the Democrats, and any video that violated "The party line". And people seem to forget that Trump - the ex-POTUS of the United States - was banned from Twitter or social media. He had to start his own social media company.
And these "Fight against misinformation" was used to the ADL toadies and the Leftists at Youtube and other places to take down any rightwing or conservative comment they wanted. Biden white house was also giving them lists of people and posts they wanted taken down.
I know of several conservative commenters who were careful to never touch the verboten topics, never insulted anyone at anytime, and only discussed topics already raised by the MSM. But they still had episodes taken down on seemingly random basis.
And I know of a WW 2 discussion group thats closings it doors because Facebook is constantly claiming the topics violate some mysterious "Rule" - even though the forum rigiously moderates and deletes any so-called "hate speech".
"misinformation about Covid vaccines and election falsehoods"
don't they mean: for Years YouTube REQUIRED misinformation about Covid vaccines and election falsehoods?
looking back at it.. Can we At Least agree that the Covid "vaccines" weren't?
Professor Turley refers to this most welcome phenomenon as Trump Did It (TDI).
For years, YouTube has removed videos with derogatory slurs, misinformation about Covid vaccines and election falsehoods,
Things which turned out to be true.
Remember this always.
Google owns Youtube - and the left and Google actively censored COVID speech.
(Unless the leftist minions were mocking horse paste. Leftists are allowed to mock Horse Paste. Leftists are all medical experts! )
Even though Ivermectin is a drug that is given to humans and animals. Just like many drugs. Including drugs like gabapentin. But loyal brownshirt leftist democratic minions obey their maddow-soros orders from on high.
Google either submitted to the Soros-Chi-Com Biden commands - or they are dedicated leftists themselves - and it was easy for them to obey the Soviet-Democratic one way street speech crimes.

Embrace The POWER! of the word "AND"
who paid for Google's creation?
it's WEIRD, that an organization formed, founded, and funded by the CIA would support the CIA..
Oh WAIT! it's Not Really That Weird at ALL!
YouTube was infamous for its advocacy of the non-sterilizing mRNA shot, among other transscientific voyages, and conspiracy to cover-up, censor collateral damage. Thanks Andrea of Google under the Alphabet umbrella corporation.
The power of and! I embrace!
“Trump says, ‘you're welcome!’”
More likely: “Your favorite President says you’re welcome!”
Musk was right about the spending, but the Left reminded him how bad the alternative to Trump was and is, and that's pretty sobering. Their actions and words can't be explained anymore without accepting evil as a real force in politics. Nobody is really so stupid to believe what they support is good. It's just not possible. They may sometimes use a good law or decency as tool, but always in support of the unsupportable end.
...While Ann is tooting her own free speech horn it's worth remembering this platform is moderated for 'bad faith' and also 'off topic'...a powerful magic wand that can make politically undesirable comments disappear. In what is probably the second most egregious censorship I can recall on this blog commenters on this post were warned comments deemed delete worthy would be deleted, then they were deleted (as well as the warning). Specifically they were comments advocating for the students who sere silenced by heckler's veto, and had their rights in the student code of conduct in the process. So yah, free speech advocate...kinda sorta...
You should also thank Elon Musk. If X had succumbed to the censors, Trump would not be president, and a lot of bloggers would have been shut down (if not imprisoned), including Althouse. And none of the other platforms would be relaxing their censorship now.
"I was talking to this lady - her name's Althouse. Ann Althouse. runs a very successful blog - and she was thanking me effusively - that means a LOT. A lot of thanks - She said for teaching us to have the courage to speak freely. That was nice. Teaching us to have the courage to speak freely."
"A very smart woman, too. Used to be a law professor. Very smart. Ann Althouse. Successful blog. Very grateful for what we've done."
“Videos . . . considered to be in the public interest” sounds like an invitation for viewpoint discrimination.
Don't trust Google. Google is asshoe.
rehajm--Like you, I was at odds with and very critical of Althouse for her position in the Stamford kerfuffle.
Yet she hasn't banned either of us, or any other critical commentators, other than those who are clearly bad faith trolls.
Credit is due.
...yah, there's always soft language to please and/or thank the host here. Still, good faith comments were censored. Credit is due.
"misinformation about Covid vaccines and election falsehoods, saying the content violated the platform’s rules."
Some "misinformation" more persecuted than others, the softer version being demonetization. A whole lexicon has arisen to evade the censorship.
YouTube has been obsessed with "protecting" the sensibilities of the barking mad by demanding content creators to speak around certain uncomfortable yet immutable facts of existence such as death, forcing narrators to substitute common English verbs such as kill with the bizarre euphemisms, such as make unalive.
Almost all the "misinformation" about both covid and the covid "vaccines" that was censored by any and all social media platforms- and- the MSM- and THE GOVERNMENT- was truthful criticism. Or not even criticism in most cases, but simply the Truth- with a capital "T".
There is little doubt in the minds of almost everyone who understands numbers and statistics that the 2020 election was stolen. The fact that no investigations were allowed to happen immediately and that courts unanimously (although separately) agreed that no one in the entire United States of America had standing to challenge election results, raises suspicions. That ballot counting was stopped in multiple swing states, and the after midnight ballot dumps without Republican poll watchers present came in at Soviet levels of 95-100% for Biden raises suspicions. It's also an object lesson in "Be careful what you wish for, you may get it." Yep, they kept Trump out of office for those 4 years, a weakened Trump, with a cabinet that had people plotting against him. They got brain addled Biden for 4 wonderful years. Then- they got Trump V.2.0. And support for him, despite MSM reports to the contrary, is not wavering. We will never know the "Truth" with a capital "T" about the 2020 elections.
The almost absolute freedom of expression is what makes America exceptional.
"The almost absolute freedom of expression is what makes America [and Althouse] exceptional."
I suggest that the free-speech absolutists who snipe here should tend to their own blogs. Unless, that is, Prof follows them around and tells them they do it wrong.
Narr: I don't think Althouse would bother to stalk people. I think she would treat them by the same rules she maintains at her own personal salon. This isn't a courtroom: it's a discussion. She's gotten many of us through many lonely nights by maintaining it. And when I felt I went to far, I've apologized to her, usually. This is her site. Many here would deny her the right to vote, and she tolerates even those types, if they're not obsessive and not overly personal.
Dreaming about Trump and free speech is weird but exposes a commitment ... to the issue...I'm trying to remember if I ever dreamed about a political figure. I have had dreams about my enemies. But that's genetic.
Tina, I don't think the Prof would bother to stalk other bloggers either.
Narr, sorry, I guess I need more freon in my detecting /sarc tank. It's been one of those utterly unnerving fix the HVAC for the fourth time days. I so wish I had become a plumber or electrician.
No apology necessary, Tina.
I don't ever wish that I had become a plumber or electrician, but sometimes I wish my son had.
