Trump says he thinks that Biden withdrew because he was "threatened... violently."

From the Theo Von podcast embedded in the previous post — at 44:31. Von asked about what pushed Biden to let go of the nomination he had won in the primaries. Trump said:
"I know what happened, and you're not supposed to do that. It's not supposed to be probably constitutional. She got no votes. He got 14 million votes. All of a sudden they're telling him to get out. or they threatened him. And he is an angry person."

Von breaks in to ask, "But who are 'they'?" and Trump responds:

"Well, I would say Schumer, Pelosi, and numerous other people — the heads of the Democrat Party, yeah — and they did, they threatened him violently, I think. And he didn't want to get out. Remember he said only God will get me out — right? Only God... Yeah, and what happened is they went to him, and they said — this was after the debate — now, if he didn't have the debate he would still be running...."

What violence is Trump talking about?

Haven't I looked into the word "violence" before? Yes, I did the OED routine back in 2019 when Elizabeth Warren introduced the term "traffic violence":

To what extent does "violence" mean that the damaging action was intentional? The first definition is, as expected, "The deliberate exercise of physical force..."

But then there's "Great strength or power of a natural force or physical action" — for example, a storm or an earthquake. There's no mind deliberating there (though maybe there's an implication of human will and the usage is metaphorical, such as when corny writers tell you the sea was "angry").

"Violence" is also "Great intensity or severity, esp. of something destructive or undesirable. Example: " Mrs. Viveash had been reduced, by the violence of her headache, to coming home..for a rest." (That's Aldous Huxley.)

Similarly, there's "Vehemence or intensity of emotion, behaviour, or language; extreme fervour; passion." Example, from Shakespeare, "Marke me, with what violence she first lou'd the Moore." But now we've got the human mind in play again. I don't think what's being called "traffic violence" is any intensity in the traffic, just accidents, by people who didn't mean to do that (if we set aside the very tiny proportion of car damage done by an evildoer deliberately running somebody down).

"Violence" is also used to refer to restrictions imposed on nature, as in "He was obliged to attend near a Quarter of an Hour, though with great Violence to his natural Impetuosity, before he was suffered to speak" (Henry Fielding, "Tom Jones" (1749)).

And then there's the "Improper treatment or use of a word or text; misinterpretation; misapplication; alteration of meaning or intention." Again, from "Tom Jones": "A Passion which might, without any great Violence to the Word, be called Love."
Back then, the issue was the lack of intentionality in car accidents. Pressuring Biden to drop out was completely intentional, so the issue here is whether "violently" connotes physically injuring him. I find it very hard to believe anyone threatened to physically injure him, but perhaps it's not so hard to believe that Trump thinks that or that Trump would lie and say that he thinks that.

But let's look at the fact that Trump did say that he thinks Schumer, Pelosi, and numerous other people — the heads of the Democrat Party — threatened Biden violently.

Now, maybe the word "violently" was used in a different sense that doesn't involve physical injury, that aligns with the OED's definition of "violence" in terms of great intensity, severity, vehemence, fervor, and passion. Maybe Trump just meant to say They threatened him very strongly. Then his use of "violently" may be easy to accept... depending on what the meaning of "threatened" is.

Of course, Trump has been accused of inciting violence on January 6, 2021. That word looms large in his subjective experience of persecution. So I don't think he uses it lightly. I think he feels mistreated in these accusations of violence. Perhaps he thinks: If they're going to use that word wildly as they come for me, I'm using it against them. Very strongly.

People are starting to notice that Democrat women have a tendency to show up drunk in public. This is one of the coping mechanisms of people abused in domestic relationships.

Both political parties have always been infested by sick abusive people. The type of person who seeks political power is the same personality type that manipulates and abuses others.

He's riffing on the "your speech is violence" tendencies of the DNC crowd, IMO. It's pretty clear he was threatened with something awful. Just days prior he had vowed to NEVER get out of the race. So if he was going to "hand the baton" to Kamala he would have done it last year, like he suggested was the plan in 2020. But like all Democrat promises that came with an expiration date.

As a surprise to Joe, so did his candidacy. And it was not a date of his choosing, as they say.

They threatened to remove him via the 25th Amendment. Biden should have called their bluff but in his enfeebled state he didn't have the brains or the courage to do so.

It is not surprising that Donald Trump's loyal supporters would justify his use of the term violence without any evidence. The long detailed analysis of the etymology and definition of violence given by the law professor actually justifies the overuse of the word violence by the woke me to Lily livered liberal complaints that talk about harsh speech as being violence. They overuse of the term violence has been used to justify limitations on free speech. Now that it has been used in that context by your lord and savior it is automatically approved.

That being said I thought the conversation that Trump had with Theo von was very good. It's too bad more politicians don't do that sort of thing

Trump has no natural political allies, no “team of rivals” around Him, and he keeps other Republican leaders in check by threatening them with being burned to the ground if they don't bend the knee.

The Republican Party is now fully organized as a cult of personality.

As we see this week in Chicago, the Democratic Party is unified, not behind one or two people, BUT AS A PARTY.

I predict Trump will come unglued over the next seventy days, and we will see the Republican Party and him get pulled apart.

Trump, who never accepts blame, will viciously turn on everyone else in the Republican Party; this includes Vance, who is young and will be focused on his future political viability.

I don't read that as expressing knowledge of what a threat might have consisted of. I think that's saying: here are things that could have been threatened. But I'd say about that: These are not violent things (unless you understand the word in the loose sense discussed in the post).

Ann Althouse said...

It's pretty obvious now it would have been wise for Trump to prepare to campaign against Kamala as early as January 2021. It wouldn't have been a shock if Biden had died, and Kamala got a big Inaugural event. Didn't Trump have some kind of contingency plan? He seems a bit lost. It wasn't contrary to the Constitution for the Dems to do what they did. It's contrary to the big-P Progressive measures that go back to Wizard of Oz days, primaries and all that, power to the people.

I like Trump, but it's a real question: since the Dems are saying Biden is not competent to serve another term, why not invoke the 25th Amendment? They make it obvious they are thinking only of the election, but is the present situation good for the country? Invoking the 25th would once again give Kamala an Inaugural event.

Ann, maybe President Biden became convinced by other Democrats (and the polls) that he was not the candidate who could defeat Trump and that he no longer had the complete confidence of his fellow Democrats, which is needed to lead a winning team.

I don't think they threatened the 25th Amendment, because that process would simply take too long, and it would require the cooperation of the Republicans. It wouldn't work. No - I think the strength and power of the Surveillance State was brought to bear, the portfolio of evidence was pulled out, and the myriad of corrupt practices, influence peddling, and flagrant abuses of power, going back through the years, was put on display under Joe's nose. Joe may not have thought they would stoop to this. Joe may not have even been aware he was being watched, and his activities cataloged. But the prospect of immediate disgrace and prosecution, a loss of legacy and prosecution of family members, that would have been enough - because it would imply the use of violence as well, or at least the ruthlessness and willingness required.

Wince said...

Not to go all David Brooks on you, but Max Weber defined the modern state by virtue of its monopoly on the use of violence, which would include prosecution and persecution. Something Trump is very familiar with:

State monopoly on violence, in political science and sociology, the concept that the state alone has the right to use or authorize the use of physical force. It is widely regarded as a defining characteristic of the modern state.

In his lecture “Politics as a Vocation” (1918), the German sociologist Max Weber defines the state as a “human community that (successfully) claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory.” Under feudalism, no lords, including the king, could claim a monopoly over the use of violence, since their vassals promised to serve them but remained free to exercise power in their fiefdoms. Moreover, the king and the landed nobility had to share power or compete with the Roman Catholic Church. The modern state, according to Weber, emerged by expropriating the means of political organization and domination, including violence, and by establishing the legitimacy of its rule.

You paint FJB as self sacrificing, and willing to bow out for the team. Absolutely no real evidence that he has ever really done so. And he seemed quite angry that he was forced out. Not the actions of someone taking a hit for the team, but rather, someone who was betrayed.

My theory is that he was forced out, likely by threats of something or another. Maybe it was the threat of taking his ice cream away. But I suspect that it was something more. That the family members behind him were somehow threatened. I think more likely blackmailed for their financial crimes. Jill. His brother. Ashley. And maybe Hunter, but I suspect that he had already been sacrificed. Cocaine in the private quarters of the WH may have been one felony too many (unless it was Ashley’s - we just know that it was almost certainly a family member’s from the DNA testing).

It was, as noted, likely led by Pelosi and Scheamer, maybe with help from the Obamas. Never much love between Jill and Michelle. But facilitated by the Deep State, and esp the Secret Service, who know everything that happens (or doesn’t - see the assassination attempt against Trump) with the President and his family. How many times did his last dog bite one of their agents? My memory is over a dozen, at least. Doesn’t engender a lot of loyalty on their part.

Which translates, I think, into blackmailing his close family members. Which further translates to the Deep State, with the Secret Service and FBI providing much of the blackmail material. Just like they knew that Hunter’s laptop was legitimate and intentionally hid that fact 4 years ago.

She was, after all, three years old and unable to express any better that she didn't like doing what she was told.

Likewise, the "violence" of January 6 and the "violent" nature of Biden's ouster are merely the responses to something the Democrats didn't like (Jan 6) and that Biden didn't like (ouster). There is no better expression used for the opposition to the protests and for the unseemliness of Biden's ouster, because the Dems are the equivalent of three year olds where opposition to them is concerned, and Trump is explaining to the Dems - still, three year olds - that what they did was wrong, in words they understand.

My daughter grew out of complaints that I was "yelling" at her, mostly because I ignored her complaints. Would that the nation could get the Dems to grow up, especially if we could do so by ignoring them.

I don't know Von enough to know his techniques. Clearly, he's not a journalistic interviewer. He's trying to relax his interlocutor and draw him out. At that, he's not as good as Joe Rogan.

Theo Von got his start on MTV's Road Rules or The Real World, I forget. Reality tv. Joe Rogan gained his fame on fear factor. You are tuning into to entertainers, ann. They're not journalists, they talk and see what is said... nttawt. Don't try to squeeze butter from a stone. It's entertainment.

Derve Swanson said...

And don't go running for your dictionary to understand how men talk. Violently means physical because you are a woman and only now discovering dictionary words in retirement, it seems.

Try to listen more to how people speak if you go out. You are more practiced at lecturing than listening, and I doubt you know many real world men. You're kinda a Queen Bee know it all imposing your own understanding on campaigns, like the whole onion ring thing, and the Nig pajamas that showed us where your mind is and how it interprets your small world...

Lol. Another day of the prof running for her dictionary to "translate" for us, instead of just asking others if THEY understand what he meant. Most of us, I suspect, do.

My theory is that he was forced out, likely by threats of something or another. Maybe it was the threat of taking his ice cream away. But I suspect that it was something more. That the family members behind him were somehow threatened.

Disagree. Biden is an egotist who cares nothing for his family. It's all about him. Being the coward he is, he was threatened with loss of imagined prestige. He knows in his heart that he has always been a blustering coward and is aware that his backstabbing friends would not hesitate to continue their MSM assault on his pathetic behavior.

Look how the media was prepared to destroy him after the debate. First, his handlers drugged him stupid (easy to do), then media pounced within minutes of debate conclusions. Same media that had been clarifying his remarks and covering for him for years had their orders and had been practicing their comments for weeks prior to debate.

Then, entire Democrat populace, as usual, followed their media masters, piled on. Simply look at leftist comments throughout the internet, where people are making fun of his humiliation by pretending Joe dropped out for the good of the party , while laughing about him behind his back.

Naturally, many educated, but unintelligent, dems believe the spin. Same people who trusted media about the infamous laptop and Russian collusion.

They cannot be blamed for their shortcomings, they were born that way, just like some men were born in womens bodies, and some women were born in mens bodies.

FullMoon said...

Fortunately, men and women can switch bodies, but, you can't fix stupid.

The Democrats tried to murder Donald Trump. We're beyond evidence as a nation. We are on to vengeance.

"Threatened violently" isn't the same thing as "threatened with violence." If Pelosi was alone with poor, disoriented old Joe and started screaming at him loudly, that would be violently threatening. Still, Trump has a way of setting people off into dead end streets: the Democrats and progressive media may say that Trump said that Pelosi threatened Biden with assassination, and the conspiracy theory right may think that she did just that.

Lazarus said...

The bureaucracy is on the same page as the Democrats, the non-profits, and the media, so a lot of what the administration has been doing comes directly from the bureaucracy.

Lazarus said...

"Threatened violently" is different from "threatened with violence." If Pelosi was alone with Biden and started loudly screaming at poor, disoriented old Joe, that would be violently threatening. Of course, Trump can set people off into dead end streets. Democrats and the media my claim that Trump accused Pelosi of threatening Biden with assassination, and the conspiracy theory right may assume that she actually did.

Just listened to the podcast on Podcast Addict. Very interesting to see him in a conversation instead of a confrontation. The confrontation is on the fake news organizations, not on President Trump.

One thing I liked was that it was a conversation of equals. President Trump called him Theo, Theo called him Donald or Don.

That is as it should be. Donald Trump worked for and will work again for Theo and all the rest of us American citizens. It is nice to be on a first name basis. I would be OK with PEDJT calling him Mr Von and Theo calling him president or Mr Trump.

My objection is to politicians thinking they have the right to address me by first name while not openly extending the same courtesy to me.

I don't think Melania is very happy with him risking his life like this. Eric is running the company and Don Jr is a lightweight. None of you lefties would risk this when you don't need the money. The Obamas have their stash and are content.

I have yet to see this italics problem manifest itself. In the old format, if I didn't close an italics thingamajig, the comment wouldn't post and there'd be a little explanation of what I'd done wrong. Another reason why this new format sucks.

Maybe what Trump meant is that they threatened Biden very bigly.

It took Tulsi Gabbards less than 2 minutes to end Kamala's last Campaign.

Kamala's campaign was over before it started. She will not have more than 60 million voters in November. They wont be able to mail in enough ballots this time.

Joe Biden was most likely persuaded to abandon his run by a well-connected Justice Department official who discreetly whispered through an intermediary, ‘It would be a pity if we finally felt obligated to look into the tax implications of your family shakedown operation’ and ‘Your family will enjoy your final years more if they don’t have to talk to lawyers every day.’

Bob Boyd said...

According to my sources, the Governor of Minnesota told Biden, "If you don't withdraw, some experienced ruffians from Cass Lake with a long history of Fish and Game violations will come to your beach house, pull down your pants and shove a walleye right up your ass and the Secret Service will look the other way."
Maybe that's what Trump was referring to when he used the word violently.

Mattman26 said...

That has a certain ring of plausibility.

Well, as a 75 year old, not senile yet, that list would be persuasive to me, and would probably affect me more "violently" than most actual physical attacks short of death.

Rabel said...

"Now, maybe the word "violently" was used in a different sense..."

There's no "maybe" to it. It's clear from the video he wasn't referring to physical violence, but to all the terms you used in your second "maybe."

@Ann - "The most important shred of evidence is that Biden — after working so hard and asserting that only God could get him to leave — did in fact leave." That would normally be important, but coming from Biden, it could have been coming from God's voice in his head.

Let's go straight to the one who is really in charge in that family: "Dr" Jill. She went on record on the front cover of Vogue, artfully posed in Power Broker mode, proclaiming - "we will decide our future". As they say on the internet, that didn't age well, once Joe Public was confronted with direct, irrefutable evidence that Slow Joe had not aged well at all.

It is not surprising that Donald Trump's loyal supporters would justify his use of the term violence without any evidence.

People who tried to kill Trump have no room to lecture others about violence.

We know Biden had a medical incident and was flown home. Then a statement was issued on his behalf that he had withdrawn. Then he wasn't seen or heard from for days.

We'll probably never know what really happened, but whatever it was it wasn't pretty.

Hindsight is 20-20, but Trump should have waited to debate Biden until after Biden was nominated at the convention.

Incarcerating one's son seems rather violent.

Leland said...

Good point, particularly about Jill. The prosecution of Hunter and a potential impeachment of Joe would hit only the two of them. But a dossier of Biden's family corruption would see Jill facing prison like Nadine Menendez.

Leland said...

You guys are silly. Don Jr. has a podcast. He just put up one with David Limbaugh on Rumble 5 hours ago. The latest available on Apple has Jr. interviewing elected Republican Senator Tom Cotton. He interviewed Tulsi Gabbard 5 months ago, which she posted on YouTube. Tulsi is posting all over social media how she's debated Kamala Harris and considers her unfit to be President. That's before we get into RFK Jr. coming to Trump's side. Then there is Peter Thiel making the rounds on podcasts.
But using surrogates is mostly what Biden and Harris do. Trump is capable of campaigning himself and speaking in front of crowds. He doesn't need surrogates to do it for him. If you don't think Trump is effective in his own campaigning, then you are definitely not paying attention to this blog and the host.

He's doing so with Harris, and she's already backing out of the deal. She won't go on Fox. As it is, Harris poll numbers are dropping in Pennsylvania while the DNC is going on, and even Newsweek is noticing:

That's a must win state for Harris, especially with Trump ahead in Likely Voters in Georgia and Arizona. Trump was right to say "Thank You" when Harris announced Walz as her VP choice.

Something we can and should do is include non-italicized and non-bold text after the part where we used the i or b tags. Then we can catch the problem and quickly delete our comment.

But! I did prefer that the commenting function not only included checks for unclosed tags, but the Preview allowed me to look for typos. (Not that I always caught all of them.)

Will Cate said...

Figures Blogger would have some bugs in the new commenting system. But not having included a routine to close the unclosed tags in a post... that's just basic shit. Can't believe they missed it.
