"I missed Buttigieg's closing statement because the dumb NBC News Roku channel interrupted to ask if I'm still watching."

Writes my son John at the end of his live blogging of last night's debate — when he was writing something for each of the closing statements:
10:53 — Swalwell: "I'm a father of a 2-year-old and an infant. When I'm not changing diapers, I'm changing Washington. Most of the time, the diapers smell better."

10:54 — Williamson: "Donald Trump is not going to be beaten just by insider politics talk.… He's reached into the psyche of the American people, and he's harnessed fear for political purposes.… I'm going to harness love for political purposes … and love will win."

10:55 — Hickenlooper seems to have saved up his whole pitch till the end: "We expanded reproductive health to reduce teenage abortion.… We were the first state [Colorado] to legalize marijuana.… We got to near universal health care coverage."

10:56 — Gillibrand: "Women are on fire!"

10:57 — Yang says he'll build "a broad coalition" including "libertarians" — the only time they're mentioned by any of the Democratic candidates.

10:58 — Harris tries to convince us that she should be the nominee based on her prosecutorial background, saying she'll "prosecute the case against 4 more years of Donald Trump."

10:59 — I missed Buttigieg's closing statement because the dumb NBC News Roku channel interrupted to ask if I'm still watching.

11:00 — Sanders, seeming to draw inspiration from President Eisenhower, says he'll fight "the military-industrial complex."

11:01 — Biden promises to "restore the soul of this country — the president has ripped it out." "This is the United States of America! We can do anything if we're together — together."
By then, I'd closed down my computer. It wasn't that I'd got sleepy. I was tired of the rancor. I'm up again this morning at 4 a.m., looking back and assessing what happened to me. I had distanced myself from these people as I was watching, but now I'm thinking of the reality of one of these people becoming President. It wasn't just a funny talk show of wild scary weirdos. It's for real. And I think what happened in my head was: Okay, just give me Biden.

Biden feels that way to me, he wouldn't do, or attempt to do, anything crazy. He'd leave most things that Trump has done that people like and appreciate alone. His election would push the progressives and far left reactionaries further into the shadows.

Perhaps that's why he gets so much polling support.

I fear that women who have grown old are more skeptical in the secret recesses of their hearts than any of the men; they believe in the superficiality of existence as in its essence, and all virtue and profoundity is to them only the disguising of thie truth, the very desireable disguising of a pudendum - an affair, therefore, of decency and modesty, and nothing more.

Just give me Biden?

I have always disliked Trump, especially after his stupid TV show came about. While I agree with most of his positions, I had a slight fear he would do something impulsive or stupid that would be ruinous. So far, nothing big.

I have the same fear with Biden. Sure, you expect the same bland politics as usual, but the man is an imbecile. He's only a few steps above Chauncey Gardner. What if he had partitioned Iraq?

I think you are going through the same thing the Republicans went through. Seemed like a bunch of reasonably qualified candidates, but once you do a deeper dive, your only thought becomes, "This is all we got?!"

"Give me Biden" is the Dem equivalent of "Give me Jeb" without the Bush fatigue syndrome.

Do you understand that you do not, in fact, have to choose any "one of these people?" Why not just stick with President Trump if all the alternatives are so nauseating?

PDT is SO bad, to you, that Biden's first priority, not as candidate but as President after he has putatively won, should be "defeating Donald Trump?" What does that even mean? Hounding his family into jail or early graves? Making 63 million who dared vote for him, wish they had never been born? Reducing your own readership by 90%?

Here's the thing. The Dems are not going to put up Joe Biden as their candidate. It's just not going to happen. They'll rip up their base if they do that.

With Republicans and Trump, last time around, the base wanted a drastic change. Someone to blow up the existing polititalk that goes on incessantly by both parties, with nothing getting done. The base wanted change. The Republican elite, those who have run the party forever, wanted anyone but Trump. Even Hillary was preferable to the Republican elite. The base won.

It is the same for the Dems this time around. If the Dem Party Masters give their blessing and arrange for Biden, they'll lose their base and lose the election. If they give in to the various sects that call themselves 'progressive', they'll keep their base, but lose traditional Dems and, hence, lose the election.

I see Trump for 4 more years. And after that, Nikki Haley for 8. After that, the 'progressives' will have long left college and either realize they need real jobs, or they'll be living like the Guilty Remnant in The Leftovers. Wearing white and smoking cigarettes outside your houses.

Supporting politicians one knows to be flawed and imperfect, and even not very good, is what holds the country together. The country is never more unified than when everybody - even people who voted for them - agreed that Bush or Carter or Johnson or Hoover was a lousy president.

It's when people don't see the flaws in their candidates that the trouble starts.

I only watched a little, and it was the part where Harris was tearing into Biden about busing. I misunderstood at first, because I thought it was now commonly thought that busing could have been handled differently. But no, she acted like it was absolutely racist to have been against federal busing. Where I lived, busing was forced on us and it caused a lot of problems because it destroyed neighborhood schools (my elementary school was 1/3 black, so well integrated naturally). And it was the black kids who ended up being bused all the way across the city.

There's also been a push to make Biden seem racist for having worked with segregationists. I guess the idea of working with people on the other side of issues is no longer an admirable thing.

Anyway, my husband is a Dem and he didn't watch the debate, but he saw that clip on CBS This Morning. And then we had a discussion about the way everyone is trying to turn Biden into a horrible racist.
I don't love Biden but it's incredibly unfair. But then, I was racist for not agreeing with Obama on everything.

Speaking of leaders, how many great leaders have the Dems given us in the last 100 years or so? It’s by far the most important trait of a president — far more than intelligence, for example which is way overrated. Intelligence without leadership is exactly who Carter was.

Clinton? Not really. Great with people and charismatic but not a leader. Too much polling to drive policy.

Obama? Hmmm. It would seem so but I would say no — he had too many tailwinds helping him: diversity, worshipful media, academics, DC establishment, etc. It was more about his supporters elevating him than his intrinsic leadership. Plus: he cannot even speak intelligently when off-TelePrompTer. Nope.

JFK? Probably. Again, showed leadership before becoming president in other domains, although his actual military accomplishments may have been overstated. Still, seems like a Yes — he didn’t cause WWIII in 1962, and that’s worth something.

Truman? Yes. Anyone who puts a sign that says “The buck stops here” on their desk is doing something right.

FDR? Yes. Don’t like his ideas but he led the country for 12 years through horrific times. Re-elected 3 times. Only real leaders can do that

Hoover? Nope. Wilson? Possibly. Debatable I guess.

Anyway, food for thought.

Great example of of how disgusting rich white people can be. A+

The whole night boiled down to one question, which happened right after everyone just got done saying climate change was an existential crisis which we only have 10-12 years to stop:

President Obama, in his first year, wanted to address both healthcare and climate and he could only get one signature issue accomplished. It was, obviously, healthcare. He didn’t get to do climate change. You may only get one shot and your first issue that you’re going to push—you get one shot that it may be the only thing you get passed, what is that first issue for your presidency?

Out of the 10 people on the stage, only 2 said climate change. And those two were Bennet and Hickenlooper.

Eight, if they could only do one thing, would do something else.

It ends like it ends in Pinnochio for the boys on Pleasure Island. After the election.

The candidates last night resembled a nest of excited young robins, with their heads tilted back and mouths open while wildly chirping for a worm. It was unwatchable.

So it's ironic that Biden got out demagogues by a smoother more effective race baiter.

"Sanders, seeming to draw inspiration from President Eisenhower, says he'll fight "the military-industrial complex."

That's funny because every socialist workers paradise is/was a military complex served by a militarized society.

Kamala Harris said she would not allow States to enact any law that affects abortion rights unless approved by "my DOJ".

Think about that one for a second.

Ok,ok,ok, Jimmy Carter sucked more than I thought he sucked, jeez!

But he's still better than these twerps. Eric Swalwell? Andrew Yang? Bernie Sanders, the crazy old Communist, Sandinista lover?

These folks are a joke.

To Hell with Biden. Even if he is the least obnoxious of the vile bunch, both nights. To accept Biden is to accept the 8 years of the Obama administration as something to be allowed again. To Hell with that!

Yes Bay of Pigs was a giant screwup, agreed. So JFK gets dinged for that. Still, had the vision to commit to a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Lots of benefits flowed from that program.

Kamala Harris has real life **** persecutorial ****experience and that is what the left and its real leaders are in a mood for now. So Harris it will be. She made it clear that she won't cooperate with Biden under any circumstances and so the coming weeks will see a concerted effort to destroy him to make way for her.

Yep. You got THAT right!!!!

Have you heard Harris's new campaign slogan?

"Legs up! Don't shoot!"

Mercifully, I still can't get NBC on my non-cable tv set; but on the news, on another channel, it said Biden accused Trump of creating or promoting "income inequality." Now, when I think of economics expertise, the two names that come to mind are Joe Biden and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; so I am wondering if Slow Joe detailed how Trump accomplished that. And why is it a bad thing? And has there ever been a time in human history when incomes weren't unequal?

I am of extremely modest means myself, and it doesn't bother me in te slightest if someone has more money than me.

She [Harris] made it clear that she won't cooperate with Biden under any circumstances and so the coming weeks will see a concerted effort to destroy him to make way for her.

But that space cleared by removing Biden will not be so easily filled by Harris. I predict that she will become even more polarizing than Hillary, given her embrace of open borders, free healthcare for illegals, destruction of ICE, not to mention the enormous chip on her shoulder regarding race. Really, who wants more of that?

Sanders, seeming to draw inspiration from President Eisenhower, says he'll fight "the military-industrial complex."

Fun fact: Sanders was an adult when Eisenhower left office.
