Amy Klobuchar hears America singing.

She's getting snow covered and quoting Walt Whitman as she announces her candidacy...

The event is over now, so I've taken down the link to the live feed. I didn't get to hear much of the speech, but the heavy snowfall was a fantastic touch. Loved it. And loved the quoting of Whitman. She recited the first line of the poem that I'll reprint in full:
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.
Beautiful... but I hear the poem crying out for parody. When I got to "The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam," I wanted to rephrase that to include Jeff Bezos. Is that wrong? I feel that the nighttime party of Whitman's young, robust, friendly fellows would make that poem into a bawdy song lampooning the billionaires and politicians.

ADDED: Here's the full video.

I'll watch it now and update with any useful thoughts that occur to me.

ADDED: She began with a lot of boring thank yous and an emphasis on the location on an island in the Mississippi River. Then there was a lot of talk about the Mississippi, which contained the names of many states, and lead to the observation that the river ties us together.

"As your President, I will look you in the eye, I will tell you what I think, I will focus on getting things done. That's what I've done my whole life. And no matter what, I'll lead from the heart." That seemed worth transcribing, but it doesn't mean much other than as a slight cue to think of her as pragmatic. She proceeds to a lot of policy positions, none of which stood out to me as especially striking. Health insurance. Big Pharma. Common-sense gun legislation. Respect our troops.

She says that if we see obstacles in our path, we should think of the obstacles as the path. That's not the practical way to walk over a real landscape.

She rejects "foreign policy by tweet." And — since we're alluding to Trump — "Stop the fear-mongering and stop the hate."

She botches the translation of "E pluribus unum" and says "Out of one..." before correcting herself to "Out of many, one." That motto seems politically incorrect, no? But she called it "our North Star."

She was reasonably okay. And I loved the snow! I wish she'd ad libbed some wisecracks about it. Imagine what Trump would say if he found himself in an ever-increasing snow storm? I know what Trump said about Amy in the snow:
Amy Klobuchar announced that she is running for President, talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Bad timing. By the end of her speech she looked like a Snowman(woman)!

A good progressive message! That was surprising. Between Klobuchar and Warren, Democrats are on the right track. We’ll be seeing the waves upon waves of Democratic, liberal, and centrist voters coming out for the 2020 election, dwarfing even 2018. Democratic/ liberal/ progressive energy is already strong and only getting stronger. Klobuchar appeals to the center right women of the suburbs who came out to vote in 2018 against Trumpism.

That's fine as long as they stay divided. I don't see a single Dem with Trump's crossover appeal. My bet is that Dems will try to strong-arm Kamala into first place but they will use a little too much force.

They aren’t, nor will they be with these two candidates. These two women are not Hillary Clinton. Democrats are not going to stay home or vote for a third party candidate if either Warren, Harris, or Klobuchar is on the ticket. Actually any Democratic candidate could win over Trump this time around. I don’t see Democrats and liberals voting third party as much as they used to. We see what a huge mistake it was with Clinton and with Gore, it won’t happen again.

As for the KKK, there is no evidence that ICE is a diversitist organization that indulges in color judgments/discrimination. They treat all colorful clumps of cells equally under the law, which is not prejudiced by diversity.

My first reaction was noticing the similarity of Amy in speechmaking to Ted Cruz. She's the female Democrat version of Cruz and I could imagine them running as "co-presidents' in an alternate reality. Not in our time. Also I think she has as much chance of winning as Cruz did.

I am very glad to see so many women running for President that there is no longer anything remarkable about women doing that.

Announcing in a snow storm was memorable and I give her credit for creativity. Also I was impressed by that moment when a Rabbi gave the priestly benediction to the crowd, that was stunning and transcendent, a light filled moment.

I'm not impressed when Democrats make the same old promises to fund all kinds of programs and have the rich pay for it. I'm also turned off by the claim Democrats believe in science, a phrase we hear over and over. Science is not about beliefs. The whole point of science is proving facts. No one knows or is explaining WHY the weather is so cold. Saying weather is not climate is not an explanation. Democrats talk about climate change as if that is life threatening. Consider this: the earth's population is estimated to increase 35% by the year 2050. How will those people be fed? According to a National Geographic article, "Agriculture is among the greatest contributors to global warming, emitting more greenhouse gases than all our cars, trucks, trains, and airplanes combined—largely from methane released by cattle and rice farms, nitrous oxide from fertilized fields, and carbon dioxide from the cutting of rain forests to grow crops or raise livestock. Farming is the thirstiest user of our precious water supplies and a major polluter, as runoff from fertilizers and manure disrupts fragile lakes, rivers, and coastal ecosystems across the globe. Agriculture also accelerates the loss of biodiversity. As we’ve cleared areas of grassland and forest for farms, we’ve lost crucial habitat, making agriculture a major driver of wildlife extinction." https://www.nationalgeographic.com/foodfeatures/feeding-9-billion/

Change is inevitable. Democrats seem to promoting the idea that we don't want to accept climate change. Yet the increasing population of the planet is unsustainable unless we can produce more food. Why aren't we hearing more about that from our politicians? Instead of trying to stop or reverse change politicians should be talking about how we can manage it. Maybe we will need a warmer planet to produce enough food? Or are we going to stop population growth?

Is it possible for poetry to become obsolete?

I think it is. Languages change, so for an example the medieval “El Cantar de Mio Cid” is rather difficult to grasp even for a literate and fluent speaker of modern Spanish, without some particular familiarity with Castillian of the period, or a translation.

However, it is also possible for the cultural context to change, so as to render the imagery obscure or misleading. I think that such a change is happening, or actually has happened, in the US, and so much of your literature and especially it’s poetry is meaningless to the current generation.

I recall a conversation with a UC professor of English, about a decade ago, concerning teaching Milton. Her complaints were apt - the barriers to understanding were already rising fast then. Her students were already applying obtuse modern PC to “Paradise Lost”.

The National Geographic article also says,

"Unfortunately, seaweed isn’t a quick fix for our atmospheric methane overdose. We just don’t make enough. Scientists calculate that it would take some 6,000 hectares (about 15,000 acres) of seaweed farms to supply a mere 10 percent of Australia’s 29 million cattle; to supply America’s 92 million would take over thirty times more. While seaweed farming is a rapidly growing global industry, it’s not yet up to such herculean demands."

As usual, nothing is perfect.
