The event is over now, so I've taken down the link to the live feed. I didn't get to hear much of the speech, but the heavy snowfall was a fantastic touch. Loved it. And loved the quoting of Whitman. She recited the first line of the poem that I'll reprint in full:
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,Beautiful... but I hear the poem crying out for parody. When I got to "The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam," I wanted to rephrase that to include Jeff Bezos. Is that wrong? I feel that the nighttime party of Whitman's young, robust, friendly fellows would make that poem into a bawdy song lampooning the billionaires and politicians.
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.
ADDED: Here's the full video.
I'll watch it now and update with any useful thoughts that occur to me.
ADDED: She began with a lot of boring thank yous and an emphasis on the location on an island in the Mississippi River. Then there was a lot of talk about the Mississippi, which contained the names of many states, and lead to the observation that the river ties us together.
"As your President, I will look you in the eye, I will tell you what I think, I will focus on getting things done. That's what I've done my whole life. And no matter what, I'll lead from the heart." That seemed worth transcribing, but it doesn't mean much other than as a slight cue to think of her as pragmatic. She proceeds to a lot of policy positions, none of which stood out to me as especially striking. Health insurance. Big Pharma. Common-sense gun legislation. Respect our troops.
She says that if we see obstacles in our path, we should think of the obstacles as the path. That's not the practical way to walk over a real landscape.
She rejects "foreign policy by tweet." And — since we're alluding to Trump — "Stop the fear-mongering and stop the hate."
She botches the translation of "E pluribus unum" and says "Out of one..." before correcting herself to "Out of many, one." That motto seems politically incorrect, no? But she called it "our North Star."
She was reasonably okay. And I loved the snow! I wish she'd ad libbed some wisecracks about it. Imagine what Trump would say if he found himself in an ever-increasing snow storm? I know what Trump said about Amy in the snow:
Amy Klobuchar announced that she is running for President, talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Bad timing. By the end of her speech she looked like a Snowman(woman)!

Notice it doesn't melt when it touches her. Ever.
None of these women is any Maggie Thatcher or even a Theresa May.
Cat fight!
Bill Clinton's favorite poet.
I'm going to announce my candidacy in Minnesota in February. Outside.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Isn't she the pol who throws things at her staff and derides them for the smallest errors in front of other staff?
Oh, but she is a Democrat so that is OK.
So how many more Democrats will throw their hat in the ring? Will we get to 40 or so all up?
Digital divide, those who can code and those who can't.
Of course, neither are the men.
Has Alhouse used the word fantastic more than usual in the last couple of days, or is my mind deceiving me?
All those singing workmen today would be told to cut it out by their HR department.
They were not singing things that would pass muster per modern rules.
A good progressive message! That was surprising. Between Klobuchar and Warren, Democrats are on the right track. We’ll be seeing the waves upon waves of Democratic, liberal, and centrist voters coming out for the 2020 election, dwarfing even 2018. Democratic/ liberal/ progressive energy is already strong and only getting stronger. Klobuchar appeals to the center right women of the suburbs who came out to vote in 2018 against Trumpism.
Digital divide? Well, there are fingers, and then there are toes.
Senator Amy Klobuchar is wrong on the issues and direction she wants to take the country.
Actually she lost 12 more counties this time around, than in 2012.
Another tasty morsel for Kamala Harris' breakfast table.
The song I keep hearing,
We've had it with Democrats
No more Democrats
Democrats are not for America
We’ll be seeing the waves upon waves of Democratic, liberal, and centrist voters coming out for the 2020 election, dwarfing even 2018. Democratic/ liberal/ progressive energy is already strong and only getting stronger.
That's fine as long as they stay divided. I don't see a single Dem with Trump's crossover appeal. My bet is that Dems will try to strong-arm Kamala into first place but they will use a little too much force.
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear
Conspicuously absent from Whitman's poem are the carols of the people "unwilling" to work.
If Harris pledges to make Mueller her AG and to prosecute Trump ad nauseam she might get traction. She might also get a reaction.
“I’ve wanted a higher power to provide that same narcotic delight one feels in the early stages of an ‘I’m running for President!’announcement.”
It’s actually true that every Senator believes she should be President isn’t it? C’mon Tammy Baldwin. What are you waiting for?
For some reason Schultz has crossover appeal. Harris will have to take him out first.
Another tasty morsel for Kamala Harris' breakfast table.
Yes. Will they need to attack her or will she just Walker away?
That's funny. I thought the snow made it seem like she and her followers were "lost in the wilderness".
"Which of you fucking staffers had me standing out there in the snow?! I'm your new worst fucking enemy! Here's a toothbrush--go clean the toilet!"
With the snow blurring the sign, it looks like she might be selling Amway.
What, she doesn't hear America singing sports columns?
Yes. Will they need to attack her or will she just Walker away?
Probably she'll Pawlenty off.
“That's fine as long as they stay divided.”
They aren’t, nor will they be with these two candidates. These two women are not Hillary Clinton. Democrats are not going to stay home or vote for a third party candidate if either Warren, Harris, or Klobuchar is on the ticket. Actually any Democratic candidate could win over Trump this time around. I don’t see Democrats and liberals voting third party as much as they used to. We see what a huge mistake it was with Clinton and with Gore, it won’t happen again.
Inga: A good progressive message!"
I especially liked the Global Warming and Snowfalls Are A Thing Of The Past parts....
She's too far from California or she would have heard:
They tried to make me go to rehab
I said, no,no,no
Just look at Wisconsin as an example. How the holy hell could someone as unexciting as Evers win so big over Walker? It was blowback, first to Walker himself, but in a huge way to Trumpism. If Walker lost Wisconsin in 2018, so will Trump in 2020.
Hell to pay, with a thrown stapler!
"Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else"
In other words, white privilege singing.
"Whaddaya mean, none else? We'll be the judge of that. You didn't build that, so that does not belong to you. Give it up."
Even moderate Klobuchar is actually another phony prog.
Weather isn’t climate Drago, but I guess in propaganda school that’s what they taught you.
The sounds of babies being snuffed out after birth was another interesting touch.
Rendering US citizenship meaningless by supporting Open Borders will be a winner as well.
Correspondingly, calling for eliminating ICE AND ice is a two-fer win on a day like that.
The ideal government
POTUS: Leftist female
CONGRESS: 100% leftist females
SOTUS: 100% leftist females
Weather isn’t climate Drago, but I guess in propaganda school that’s what they taught you.
When it's hot, it's climate. When it's cold, it's weather.
Inga: "Weather isn’t climate Drago,..."
LOL
This is ALWAYS my favorite lefty response when their AGW lies are raised.
Lefties spend every single day calling every weather event that fits their narrative "climate change" but when you toss it back at them they immediately revert to form!
But only every time.
And I'll go out on a limb here and say its a very safe assumption that only 1 of Inga or I have studied and applied space and atmospheric physics....and that 1 is not tje nurse chick in Milwaukee.
The podium placard reminded of the old Pure Prairie League song (though spelled differently.)
I think the chorus tells the story of this candidacy.
Amie what you want to do?
I think I could stay with you
For a while, maybe longer if I do
@chickenlittle -- Very funny first comment. Well played.
Inga: "Weather isn’t climate Drago,..."
Climate is nothing more than a bunch of weathers.
Correspondingly, calling for eliminating ICE AND ice is a two-fer win on a day like that.
How about the D's favored candidate likening ICE to the KKK? Has she walked that one back yet with a smile?
Kind of interesting to watch Warren and Klobuchar go populist. They don't plan to lose the rust belt, if elected.
"Has she walked that one back yet with a smile"
Not in the slightest.
In just the last 2 days we have dems calling ICE the KKK and asserting that donations to Israel are the equivalent of donating to the KKK.
When the lefties tell you they want an Arab/muslim state from Jerusalem "to the sea", we know precisely what they mean.
AOC was especially funny yeaterday as she ran from reporters asking about VA. AOC went Full Inga claiming she had never heard a single thing about it all!
Literally!
Gspencer: "Climate is nothing more than a bunch of weathers."
Time to break out the little book with sequenced pictures which we then fan to create a "moving picture show"...
"I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
the Senator screaming, the binders flying,
the unfortunate staffers, screaming in fear..."
Henry: "Kind of interesting to watch Warren and Klobuchar go populist. They don't plan to lose the rust belt, if elected."
They dont plan on losing the rust belt politically, bt they have every intention of losing the rust belt economically by reverting back to lefty trade, illegal immigration and economic policies.
ICE defends Americans' civil rights, which is why there is a need for emigration reform in order to mitigate collateral damage at both ends of the bridge and throughout, and lift the veil of obfuscation from the progressive consequences of Pro-Choice/selective/cannibalized-child and related dysfunctional ethics and choices. As for the KKK, there is no evidence that ICE is a diversitist organization that indulges in color judgments/discrimination. They treat all colorful clumps of cells equally under the law, which is not prejudiced by diversity.
Did Ed Muskie cry in the snow? That's what I think of when I see politicians talking in snowstorms.
Drago, it's quite possible that AOC heard nothing about Virginia's mess. As far as I have seen, if a story doesn't mention her, she's not at all interested.

Another clown in the car
"Beautiful... but I hear the poem crying out for parody. "
This exemplifies everything I like about you, Ann, that you can simultaneously appreciate its beauty and derive humour out of recognizing its parody potential.
Most people, particularly in this hyper-partisan age, would instinctively go one way or the other. Not both.
Bill Clinton have a copy of Leaves of Grass to Monica. I bet Amy didn't know that. I can't think of Whitman without thinking of that.
I sampled the speech. She's going to focus on geting things done, and lead from the heart.
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
the Senator screaming, the binders flying,
the unfortunate staffers, screaming in fear...
Deserves a bold repeat.
Whitman in the Minn snow by a a lawyer/pol wannabe?? What next, I sing, I sing my lament electric. Have you no sense of decency, madam?
everyone needs to read about the case against the American Airlines pilots -- AK prosecuted them as criminals for tax evasion when it was a civil matter. She also "disappeared evidence" and witnesses. SHe is a CRIMINAL -- perfect candidate for the Dems to run. She ruined lives... for her political gain.
Amy Klobuchar hears America singing.
Maybe her ears just constantly ring from all the dog whistles going off in DC.
At least Keats could rhyme.
My first reaction was noticing the similarity of Amy in speechmaking to Ted Cruz. She's the female Democrat version of Cruz and I could imagine them running as "co-presidents' in an alternate reality. Not in our time. Also I think she has as much chance of winning as Cruz did.
I am very glad to see so many women running for President that there is no longer anything remarkable about women doing that.
Announcing in a snow storm was memorable and I give her credit for creativity. Also I was impressed by that moment when a Rabbi gave the priestly benediction to the crowd, that was stunning and transcendent, a light filled moment.
I'm not impressed when Democrats make the same old promises to fund all kinds of programs and have the rich pay for it. I'm also turned off by the claim Democrats believe in science, a phrase we hear over and over. Science is not about beliefs. The whole point of science is proving facts. No one knows or is explaining WHY the weather is so cold. Saying weather is not climate is not an explanation. Democrats talk about climate change as if that is life threatening. Consider this: the earth's population is estimated to increase 35% by the year 2050. How will those people be fed? According to a National Geographic article, "Agriculture is among the greatest contributors to global warming, emitting more greenhouse gases than all our cars, trucks, trains, and airplanes combined—largely from methane released by cattle and rice farms, nitrous oxide from fertilized fields, and carbon dioxide from the cutting of rain forests to grow crops or raise livestock. Farming is the thirstiest user of our precious water supplies and a major polluter, as runoff from fertilizers and manure disrupts fragile lakes, rivers, and coastal ecosystems across the globe. Agriculture also accelerates the loss of biodiversity. As we’ve cleared areas of grassland and forest for farms, we’ve lost crucial habitat, making agriculture a major driver of wildlife extinction." https://www.nationalgeographic.com/foodfeatures/feeding-9-billion/
Change is inevitable. Democrats seem to promoting the idea that we don't want to accept climate change. Yet the increasing population of the planet is unsustainable unless we can produce more food. Why aren't we hearing more about that from our politicians? Instead of trying to stop or reverse change politicians should be talking about how we can manage it. Maybe we will need a warmer planet to produce enough food? Or are we going to stop population growth?
"They don't plan to lose the rust belt, if elected."
Whoever wins Wisconsin, Michigan & Pennsylvania wins the election. Ds can loose Florida & win the Presidency, as long as they win New Hampshire & those 3 states.
I love that they held the event outside. MN residents don't let the cold keep them from enjoying the winter. It's ok that it's below 20F, you can enjoy going outside!
A bunch of immigrants came from Sweden & Norway to settle MN. Then a bunch of them went to Seattle....and (checks the news out of Seattle) lost the ability to deal with winter.
the Senator screaming, the binders flying,
she's got women full of binders
The snow falling is a Dog Whistle to the White Racists in the Dem Party.
Minnesota like Massachusetts is a very white state.
Booker and Harris are People of Color. It’s totally racist for Klobuchar, Gillibrand, and Warren to challenge them.
Klobuchar quoting a White Make Poet is a Dog Whistle to the White Racists in the Dem Party.
She wouldn’t quote Lucille Clifton because Klobuchar is a Racist.
She wants to turn the US and the Dem Party back to the 1860s.

First thought: Where was her hat? Where were her gloves? We need a president who is prepared for exigencies. A lack of sufficient winter clothing in a snowstorm doesn't show that kind of preparation. Perhaps it's her staff's fault.
Second thought: She just stole Fauxcahontas's "Enough is enough!" line! Or are they all going to use it? Because that is exactly how we felt after eight years of Obama.
Is it possible for poetry to become obsolete?
I think it is. Languages change, so for an example the medieval “El Cantar de Mio Cid” is rather difficult to grasp even for a literate and fluent speaker of modern Spanish, without some particular familiarity with Castillian of the period, or a translation.
However, it is also possible for the cultural context to change, so as to render the imagery obscure or misleading. I think that such a change is happening, or actually has happened, in the US, and so much of your literature and especially it’s poetry is meaningless to the current generation.
I recall a conversation with a UC professor of English, about a decade ago, concerning teaching Milton. Her complaints were apt - the barriers to understanding were already rising fast then. Her students were already applying obtuse modern PC to “Paradise Lost”.
Third thought: Climate change? It looks like pretty much normal Minnesota winter there. I was told by the "scientists" that snowfalls would soon be a thing of the past. Not so much, eh?
Iceland? Iceland has 300,000 people and most of them live in Reykjavik. Hardly a role model for a continental nation of 300 million.
Digital divide? Well, there are fingers, and then there are toes.

Kamala for president. No to angry Amy.

It isn't the scandanavians in the PNW who can't handle winter, it's all the refugees from California, which is why we also have Gov Green New Deal Inslee.
“Well, it happened again. Amy Klobuchar announced that she is running for President, talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Bad timing. By the end of her speech she looked like a Snowman(woman)!”
Trump for the Win! Both Warren and Klobuchar easily dissed.
Kamala for president. No to angry Amy.
Titus isn't clairvoyant, though he may be a bit of a clear voyeur.
Kamala will be the Dem nominee for one simple reason: West Coast Mega Donors. Klobuchar et al. simply will not find sufficient financial backing to run a campaign all the way through. Google, Amazon, Hollywood, etc., will unite (if they haven't already) around the West Coast gal to reliably take West Coast orders after she is installed. Not only that, she is anointed by Obama and his cadre. Klobuchar is just another fly in the anointment. I almost feel sorry for earnest Dems like Inga, because she is going to be bowled over (again). The choice has already been made for you.
It isn't the scandanavians in the PNW who can't handle winter, it's all the refugees from California, which is why we also have Gov Green New Deal Inslee.

A year or two , or three, ago, I read of a politician investing in a seaweed farm, or something. Because seaweed diet help eliminate methane gas from cows. I predicted this would become a talking point and propaganda so as to make politicians rich. I now predict the seaweed cure will reemerge.

I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.

Klobuchar needs to follow Dudley Smith’s advice and lose the glasses. No one will take her seriously with them on.
BTW, as usual California Dems leads the way in stupidity. The rest just follow
Cow fart bill passes California Legislature September 7, 2016
@FullMoon: Do you think Wisconsin cows could eat lake weed and fart less? Madison has a huge problem with lake weeds in the summer.
what if cows are like Uranus-- mostly gas?

A confession, I voted for Hubert Humphrey in 1968. Would I vote for a Minnesotan today? I don't think so. The state is as crazy as California, or so it seems from my outsider vantage point.
When my white blond, blue-eyed father visited Sweden with the Navy in the late 40's, they thought he must be a Swede from Minnesota and not a English-Scot from North Carolina.
It's early days for this much attention to the race. Most years there's not much attention until a year from now. What's up with all the blogging/ media/ commenter attention? I'm not paying much attention & will not for a year.
In a year, we'll have a better idea. Some will be 1st tier while others will be 2nd or 3rd tier. Some might drop out. Some of these candidates will be able to run a campaign. Some will not. But I'm not going to follow the minutiae of the politicking for a year before the first caucus/primary. I'm sick of it already. My hat is tipped to the political junkies that care to watch it play out.
But I do like talking about Minnesota. Beautiful. Lots of good jobs. People who like to spend their time outside, a good place to raise kids. I love those northern cabins and family-oriented resorts on lakes. Would live there for sure.
Annie C: "Drago, it's quite possible that AOC heard nothing about Virginia's mess. As far as I have seen, if a story doesn't mention her, she's not at all interested"
Nicely done.
Amy is gonna attack them all. Go Amy go.
The Dems should just run a snowman against the president. Everyone loves snowmen. They can put some snow boobs on it if they need a female candidate.
@FullMoon,
The National Geographic article also says,
"Unfortunately, seaweed isn’t a quick fix for our atmospheric methane overdose. We just don’t make enough. Scientists calculate that it would take some 6,000 hectares (about 15,000 acres) of seaweed farms to supply a mere 10 percent of Australia’s 29 million cattle; to supply America’s 92 million would take over thirty times more. While seaweed farming is a rapidly growing global industry, it’s not yet up to such herculean demands."
As usual, nothing is perfect.
-- Bob from Alhambra
Photos included:
Cows wear BACKPACKS to capture their ‘emissions’ and become miniature power stations Scientists have developed ‘fartpacks’ that extract 300 litres of methane Tube from the pack is inserted into cow's digestive tract to collect the gas The methane is then coverted into enough energy to run a car for 24 hours Methane is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas
Interesting that snowflakes fell on someone who wants to lead a party full of snowflakes. Eh, I kid...
Also, the glasses made her appear a bit professorial, almost even smart. Appearances can be deceiving though...Wonder if she borrowed the glasses from CBF? OK, I kid some more...
Too stupid to come in out of a blizzard.
She hears America singing, then lists the people she will silence while telling us we'll all be hearing her voice a whole lot.
Sounds about right.
None of the Democrats get that populism means nation plus inclusion.
Third thought: Climate change? It looks like pretty much normal Minnesota winter there. I was told by the "scientists" that snowfalls would soon be a thing of the past. Not so much, eh?
@Clyde, don’t forget that we were told “snowfalls will soon be s thing of the past” circa 1998. Twenty. Effing. Years. Ago.
It is well known in Minnesota that the woman is a bitch to her staff. Very high turnover.
Leading from the heart is never pragmatic. Pragmatism comes from the head. Emotionalism from the heart.
Anyone with any sense would have worn a hat! She is an idiot.
