Why is President Trump threatening to veto a $1.3 trillion spending bill?

Not because of too much spending....
I am considering a VETO of the Omnibus Spending Bill based on the fact that the 800,000 plus DACA recipients have been totally abandoned by the Democrats (not even mentioned in Bill) and the BORDER WALL, which is desperately needed for our National Defense, is not fully funded.

Anything described as "omnibus" in Washington is generally bad. I don't like taking the bus, let alone multiple busses.

And, there is way too much fucking spending in the bill.

But, you take the good with the bad. That is life.

Neither party has gotten control of government spending. Gramm-Rudman in the 80s actually made some progress, but it was overturned by SCOTUS on legally esoteric grounds.

It's a fucking 13% increase in spending, thats why. Trump is treading water, but occasionally his face slips below the swamps surface.

It only took 6 months to add the latest 1T to the debt.

We're sunk, I'm afraid.

Thank God. I hope Trump will Veto. Its ridiculous. He was elected on building the wall, Ryan and McConnell SAY they want to build a wall - but refuse to fund it.

They even refused to defund sanctuary cities or give the INS more $$$.

Meanwhile, they gave Chuckie Schumer all the pork he wanted, and funded every other Democrat program.

Trump wants the increase in military spending. To get that, he is acquiescing in the increase of all the other spending.

That's how the swamp operates.

Maybe, the base will rise up and save him from the mistake. Veto the Bill!

rcocean said...

And when are they going to stop funding the Government with continuing resolutions and 2,000 page omnibus budget bills - that 99% of them don't read?

Its obvious they don't want to do their job. They just want accept bribes from Big Business and then hand out the pork.

BTW,Trump could get money from Mexico - but Congress would still have to authorize spending it. The money isn't the problem, they have the money, they just don't want to use it to build the wall.

You know what the difference is between this week's Omnibus and 2009's Stimulus? When the Democrats were spending us into oblivion, they delivered the goods to their own constituents instead of the other side's. They didn't load up their bill with GOP priorities. Instead, we got Obama's "I won" and "elections have consequences" and all that.

The only solace is that the few elected folks who tend to be non-spenders (maybe 12-15 of them) are conservative Republicans or libertarians. But so what? They don't carry enough sway, and don't have the numbers to effectuate policy.

Seems like there's a "good of the country" argument in there somewhere--for grudgingly supporting the GOP & Trump I mean.
I agree with you that if the Repubs do badly enough at the midterms the Dems are nuts enough to push hard for impeachment & removal even absent really credible evidence of a high crime.
Such a move would "hurt" the country in a way that's hard to fully imagine.
If people care about "healing the nation" or (whatever bullshit I'm always hearing about) they ought to oppose that outcome as strongly as possible now, oughtn't they? That would mean voting for Repubs or at the very least refusing to support Dems who would vote for impeachment & removal (which...is almost all of 'em).

There will be no shooting until some are truly desperate.

There is no exit path here. Your ruling class is not reformable, its training grounds, the universities, and the home of your intellectual class, are hopelessly decadent.

The only hope I see is external discipline, from abroad. This will however take a long time, if it does happen before a crisis. The Senate Leader, Chuck Schumer, probably restricted McConnell's bandwith in the Omnibus Spending Bill.

And maybe that’s an okay thing.

What is up with the story that Trump told a year ago; that the reason that he could not nominate Bolton for anything was because Bolton had “chased a woman through a hotel one time”? I had never heard that story until Trump brought it up.

1) Move the national weather service to NASA.

You'd probably have to move all of NOAA. (I've seen this suggestion before, FWIW).

NOAA and NASA at present don't always play well together, but if DOC is torpedoed -- along with DOEducation, if I'm King -- then maybe they'd have to if combined. Would probably have to change NASA's name though.

Fifth Avenue Trumplicans sound a little shaky today. Just look at "never again" as a figurative veto and not a literal veto. Maybe that will ease your minds. You know, he crowed about being uniquely qualified to fix the system because he knew how it worked! "Not a politician," he said! Kinda like that last guy, with the exotic name, who was uniquely qualified to make the rest of the world love us.

Well at least he's making good on the trade war promise. I can hear the Trumplicans now, "what happened to my 401K?"

HoodlumDoodlum said...If people care about "healing the nation" or (whatever bullshit I'm always hearing about) they ought to oppose that outcome as strongly as possible now, oughtn't they? That would mean voting for Repubs or at the very least refusing to support Dems who would vote for impeachment & removal (which...is almost all of 'em).

Sure, in a more sane and reasonable world, people still would vote against Democrats even given today's events. As has always been the case ultimately, if you want a smaller government (less spending) you're out of luck, and you're delusional if you think it could happen (short of a bloody revolution, which is highly unlikely for a number of reasons I won't get into).

Personally I've understood this since young adulthood and have opted for the approach of voting for people who would (in theory) accelerate the spending at a slower rate. Generally that meant voting for people with (R)s after their names. It's basically the lessor of two evils theory. If you're being driven toward a brick wall and you're only choices for drivers are the absolute lead foot and the partial lead foot, the rational decision is obviously the partial lead foot.

I'll continue to vote for whom I believe to be the least destructive person, or more specifically, the person I believe will destroy us more slowly. I believe this is rational. But I also understand that most people don't operate exactly that way. They're prone to tribalism, revenge seeking, gloating, and spitefulness. This is why I believe Trump may have nailed his coffin shut today. For a lot of voters, they'll be so angry they'll feel that it's more important to punish Trump than to do what may be less destructive.

As always, I could be wrong though. That's just how I currently see things.

It is difficult to see what function congressional Republicans play at this juncture (beyond lining their own pockets). They have blown out the budget with tax cuts and spending, so they are not deficit hawks, but they don't support any of Trump's agenda either. Trump, as a four time bankrupt, cannot reasonably be expected to be a deficit hawk.

The PTB posters have no positive vision.

This is not a surprise, as elsewhere in PTB-land there are no positive visions either.

This is a huge difference between the US and almost any other foreign country, even the most conflicted, even the most ideologically left, in that there never were any positive ideological world-views -no progress in the progressive ideology, it is all, wall-to-wall, resentment of something or someone, even of the majority of the population in some conceptions. And there is always some new cause of resentment.

Its really jarring. I have dealt substantially with Maoist radicals and they, at least, had a society-wide program for national development, which of course involved their state owning everything and having their guys plan it all, but it was there - the message was help us overthrow this rotting capitalist system and you (well most of you, those we don't get rid of) will live better lives. And so with others of all flavors - Chavez for instance.

Wrong they were, but that was their promise.

But this is not the case in the US. The radical consensus is pretty much along the lines (and paraphrasing the implications) - kill all these people and wipe out their culture. And then... nothing. That's it.

Howard said...

Identity politics being effectively zero sum, the only logical end point is cultural oblivion. You ostensibly elevate selected grievance tribes by suppressing others, which paradoxically devalues the aggrieved themselves.

Bay Area Guy said...

Well, now that the dust has cleared from this political ass-fucking by the Omnibus monster, we can assert the following:

1. On substance, the Dems are happy because they got a lot more government spending.

2. On politics, the Dems are happy because the conservative GOP types are unhappy.

3. On substance, the GOP is happy the Military got a boost, but unhappy about the rest.

4. On politics, Paul Ryan is happy there's no government shut down.

5. On substance and politics, the Freedom Caucus is very unhappy.

On politics, it's hard to say if Trump is happy or not. If we all forget about this in 3 days, he'll probably he happy. IF he erodes his base, they stay home in Nov, and the House goes Dem, he will be very unhappy.

But, even if Trump gets impeached, he won't get removed by 2/3 of the Senate. So, he survives and maybe emerges from the ashes as "the New Trump"to win in 2020? Who knows, it is too far away.

I guess being a patriotic conservative, means you have to take it up the ass every now and then.

Thank you Sir, May I have another?
