Why is President Trump threatening to veto a $1.3 trillion spending bill?

Not because of too much spending....
I am considering a VETO of the Omnibus Spending Bill based on the fact that the 800,000 plus DACA recipients have been totally abandoned by the Democrats (not even mentioned in Bill) and the BORDER WALL, which is desperately needed for our National Defense, is not fully funded.

Bay Area Guy: Now, although the "Ominbus" Budget undeniably sucks, in fairness to Trump, I don't recall that he ever campaigned as a deficit hawk (i.e., cutting spending.)

No, but he didn't campaign as a Dem/GOPe cocksucker on spending, either. I had no expectation that a Trump administration would do diddly about uncontrolled spending, but this sure looks like an unforced roll-over to the DC borg to me.

Inga: And you people voted for Trump.

Yes I did, and why on earth would I regret having done so? Not putting my trust in princes, my trust cannot be betrayed. With Trump we're in no way worse off than we would have been with anyone else (sorry, you Cruz lovers, but no), and I've been quite pleased with other acts in the play.

You (and some others here), have a very childish attitude toward politics. The rough beast slouches onward, princes fagging-out on spending bills or no. But I'm one of the one or two historically strict-sense conservatives, not local/current-sense conservatives on this site, so I would see it that way.

Yup, I agree.
In the best of all possible political worlds, Trump would have actually vetoed the bill. But that's not the world we're living in, esp. in the Senate. Yes, Republicans have a majority, but it's a bare majority and not even close to a controlling majority.

If those vote totals given above are accurate, then the Senate approved the bill by slightly over 66%, and the House by 74%. Trump's overarching political premise, so far as I'm aware, is that legislative power in this country should rest with the People, exercised through their elected representatives. Okay, according to that premise, the People have spoken. Loudly.
A pointless Trump veto of a massive, multi-issue bill like this would achieve nothing, and the political costs would be great. You think the Dems would what? reconsider their spending demands & reduce them? Hahahahah -- they'd double down and they and their friends in the media would have a field day of political posturing. And we'd still need a budget -- you think Ryan and McConnell could get a better deal after a Trump veto? If yes, explain why. If no, then why do it except as a useless gesture?
Don't blame Trump for a failure to exercise a veto: blame the weakling House & Senate Republicans in for their failure to measure up to their own principles.

5. Ending systemic racism
6. Immigration Reform/ immigration rights

Trump has zero genuine guiding principles or beliefs.

After all, Trump has Ryan and McConnell to contend with, both who are prone to pulling down their panties and bending over every time the Democrats get a hard-on. It’ll take more than a year in office for Trump to neutralized those two political fakes.

In the meantime Trump has accomplished many things without their help and against their open opposition. Be grateful for that and the fact that Crooked Hillary lost the election.

Actually, since I live in California, there IS no point in voting.

Normally I would agree with this. However it looks like this year things could be different. Democrats are so dominant in California that in 2016 many races had no Republican on the ballot in November because of our open primaries. (Two Democrats finished first and second in the primary and thus on the ballot in Nov.)

Because of this, many races have multiple Democrats running for it..sometimes half a dozen. This means the Democratic vote will be split. This should allow at least one Republican on the Nov ballot and in some cases perhaps both.

Actually, none of us know what took place behind the scenes. But from his very public tweets alone we know what Trump wanted – and most of it, aside from the military funding, was ignored by Ryan and McConnell. Trump can “tell” Ryan and McConnell what to do until he is blue in the face but he has very little control of their political perfidy at this point. That’s not Trump’s fault.

Trump’s first duty as POTUS is to keep the nation as safe as possible. He can’t do that with an under-funded military. Trump had no choice – he had to sign this fucked-up bill to keep the armed forces properly funded. There will be other budget battles in this war against the Trump agenda. One battle lost doesn’t mean the war is lost.

That is such a target rich environment for someone like me I hardly know where to begin. But briefly: we already have an extensive social safety net, in fact, that is what is driving our country toward economic calamity; the wealthy already pay their "fair share" of taxes, maybe even more than their fair share; jobs at a "living wage" are readily available for those who are have at least a high-school diploma and are honest, reliable, and crime and drug free; the US is one of the least racist countries in the world and if you don't believe that you haven't traveled much; there are solutions to our broken immigration system but the Democrats don't want those implemented because they are desperate to turn all the illegal aliens and poor legal immigrants into reliable voters for socialism; "clean energy" is one of the biggest scams in history; and we need to tighten up our voter registration system to ensure that only citizens can register to vote, that people who do vote are who they say they are, and we ensure that once they have voted they don't vote in the same election again and again.

Critical? It’s one legislative battle among many more to come. I’ll admit that it was critical in the sense that our military preparedness is ALWAYS critical but this legislative defeat is merely one battle among many more to come.

Also, I’m not sure that a Trump veto would have been overridden. I believe Trump probably signed the bill because he didn’t want another government shutdown at this point – not because the assholes in Congress would have overridden his veto. Remember that there was a deadline to prevent a government shutdown in play.

But on the subject of overriding vetoes: I want Trump at sometime in the future to veto a bill and then for Congress to vote whether to override it. It’ll be a good way to flush out the phonies.

Fact is, I can easily afford to leave, I am of independent means and well insulated from all of the problems, I don’t have to compete with illegal immigrants for jobs, my kids are fine thank you. I feel bad for the deplorables though. The ones who don’t have the skills to compete in a knowledge economy, just like the illegals, the ones who come and do their jobs for less. Face it, knowledge economy jobs don’t go to illegals, its the poor who suffer, and people who get their medical care in emergency rooms.

The "right people" are not the voters.

Trump has a long battle ahead of him. I am not at all sure he can win it.

I suspect this means the Dims will win the House in November and the left will indulge an impeachment fantasy for another year.

The big problems about analogizing modern Mexican politics and social system to the future state of the US -

- Mexico is for all intents and purposes a unified culture. Not always on the ground - see "Ley de Herodes", where the new alcalde has to deal with a pueblo where all the people speak only their Indian tongue. But the mass media and public, urban culture are unified. The US is not that, and will not be, it will be distinct tribal groups, determined by race, culture and even language, fighting for power. That will be more unstable than Mexico or Brazil.

- Mexico has an extremely wealthy neighbor to leech off of, providing the world largest, richest market, and thereby covering over every sort of social and economic failure. Mexico looks good, statistically, in comparison to much of the rest of the third world, but if you were to make any of the others a contiguous neighbor of the US they too would seem relatively wealthy. But a Mexico-standard US will not have some wealthier neighbor to bail it out.

When my wife was complaining about the attacks on Obamacare, I told her that it was Obama's fault because of the trick they used to finance the bill and avoid a cloture vote.

It's much worse than that.

I keep telling people to read "The Ruling Class" by Codevilla.

Never has there been so little diversity within America’s upper crust. Always, in America as elsewhere, some people have been wealthier and more powerful than others. But until our own time America’s upper crust was a mixture of people who had gained prominence in a variety of ways, who drew their money and status from different sources and were not predictably of one mind on any given matter. The Boston Brahmins, the New York financiers, the land barons of California, Texas, and Florida, the industrialists of Pittsburgh, the Southern aristocracy, and the hardscrabble politicians who made it big in Chicago or Memphis had little contact with one another. Few had much contact with government, and “bureaucrat” was a dirty word for all. So was “social engineering.” Nor had the schools and universities that formed yesterday’s upper crust imposed a single orthodoxy about the origins of man, about American history, and about how America should be governed. All that has changed.

Today’s ruling class, from Boston to San Diego, was formed by an educational system that exposed them to the same ideas and gave them remarkably uniform guidance, as well as tastes and habits. These amount to a social canon of judgments about good and evil, complete with secular sacred history, sins (against minorities and the environment), and saints. Using the right words and avoiding the wrong ones when referring to such matters — speaking the “in” language — serves as a badge of identity.

We have a uniparty with a few patriots, like Dave Brat, on the outside.

buwaya said...

"The R's only have total control of the supreme court, the house and the president"

US party affiliations are, as we have seen, largely irrelevant. The "Republican" control of Congress does not matter for the most part, as a large number of Congressmen and Senators are in practice inclined to the Democratic party platform.

The most important branch of government is also, as we have seen, not any elected or even judicial branch, but the bureaucracy, which is owned entirely by the Democrats, being the "party of government", owning the loyalty of its personnel. This is very much like Mexico, by the way.

Besides these, there are "branches" of government that are not included in your constitution that exist regardless, and cannot be ignored. In the US the Democrats have entire control of the high-ground of the intellectual culture, of academia, of corporate management (see Google, etc.), of finance, and of course of the mass media. This matters much more than what passes for the elected government.

buwaya said...

Oh, and did you happen to see that Thomas and Alito dissented from a recent SCt decision on the side of a more expansive, rather than a limited, interpretation of certain IRS statutes? If you want a Trump analogy, consider Gorbachev.

He came on when the Soviet Union was getting progressively more sclerotic, when it could no longer work as before, it could not compete economically or militarily. Gorbachev tried radical reforms, which failed, as the society and culture could not be changed to suit without breaking a great many rice bowls.

He did however tick off most of the Soviet PTB, so they got rid of him - or tried to, unconstitutionally by their standards. Then the whole SU collapsed, all the bits rapidly lost confidence in the center and nobody would take orders any longer.

The US is much further from the edge, economically, however I don't think it is very safe socially. The crisis of confidence in your government is very real.

That comment about the Ruling Class is an example of how history is a pack of lies agreed upon. But the assertion that today's elites are less diverse or that prior elites were unaware of each other or of government isn't common knowledge. Elites today are far more diverse in race and gender, and that's the result of the opening up of the great universities after WW2 on merit to millions who never had, or thought they had, the opportunity.
Before WW2 Ann's grandparents would have raged against FDR and his cronies, almost all white men -- remember Frances Perkins -- who all came from the same schools and established families and who comprised a far more impenetrable elite than ambitious people face today.
That nexus of power consolidated in elites goes back right through our history -- to think that Southern planters weren't aware of Boston Brahmins, who owned ships, and New York financiers, who had money, as their partners and agents in the cotton and slave trades, is reading some strange history. Remember where Quentin Compson was when he dictated Absalom, Absalom? In his room at Harvard College.

And, Howard, you don't want to come and fight.

As I said, on the oxhide (virtually).

And, HRC is not POTUS.

So, obviously: MAGA.

I notice Howard keeps using 'cuck' in totally inapplicable ways. Howie, is this just cluelessness on your part, or is it a deliberate attempt to destroy this word's specific meaning and move it in the same category as 'racist' and 'bigot'?

“...You can have her, I was thinking, and after she cuts your throat and steals all your gold, we will party. I learned this as a young man playing coed softball: our team was the best because we had the strongest women.”

Yay for strong women, what would strong men do without them? It’s only the weak men that fear and loathe strong women.

"I, literally, can't imagine that. I do understand that there are, supposedly, places where you can buy a house (or manu home) for a hundred grand. But still, I don't see how that adds up."

Interestingly they could indeed do that not too long ago. Real property has been bid up nearly everywhere, far above median income growth. The reasons for this would be interesting to explore.

Bimbo: Yes, exactly. I am a moron and proud of it. I know what I am. You and your comrades are under the impression that you are ubermensch. I know, Nietzsche again - Boooooring! My hero is Carl from Sling Blade who taught us that the simple things in life are the most true.

Blah blah blah,

This hurts, but Trump played it exactly right. As political theatre, I was very impressed by his midday "press conference" that knocked the networks off air to give him the bully pulpit. Wonderful bait and switch that left them sputtering after the fact that it wasn't a press conference after all, and that they had been snookered into letting Trump, our President, have a clear field to make his points.

Seriously, every point he made was politically brilliant.

Kirk: Cuck has been a favorite word of the conservative right to describe Libruls since Trump entered the stage. I use it ironically because I'm an asshole.

Many otherwise sensible Althouse commenters: "I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!"

That gesture would have been a veto of the omnibus funding bill which would have almost certainly been overridden. You wanted Trump to be Bluto, but in this case, Trump was the adult in the room. He was outflanked and defeated by his own party and he took the loss about as graciously as possible.

I admit to being surprised at how many of you are being led around by the nose on this by the never-Trumpers (overt and covert) and the media. If you doubt that, take a look around and see who's happy here today.

There are people to fault though. And the list starts with Wisconsin's own Paul Ryan, who put this bill together in collusion with Pelosi and the Democrats. He didn't want the Speaker's job to begin with and maybe it's time for him to go.

Home prices/median income ratio
Note that in the 1960's it was closer to 1:1

Sitter is correct in pointing out that Reagan was a disaster for working people. Figure A highlights the problem. Almost all the benefits from gains in productivity after Reagan went to the 1%. Reagan was the end of the American Dream.

"Cuck has been a favorite word of the conservative right to describe Libruls"

IIRC, it was an epithet against the anti-Trump Republicans.
The Democrats are something else.

Carter was a disaster for the working people. That's why the working people threw him out.

CWJ and Rabel obviously don't pick up what Dilbert is putting down. How much ass fucking does it take before you decide not to be a bitch?

"Sitter is correct in pointing out that Reagan was a disaster for working people."

Divergence began during the high unemployment of the deindustrialization of the 1970's. It continued, because the growth post-1976 or so was in the service economy.

Also consider that it was this takeoff of the service economy that brought in the female workforce.

Trump should have fought.

If he lost, so what? At least he tried.

And he would identified who was for open borders, illegal aliens, sanctuary cities, funding planned parenthood, and a whole bunch of other stuff. And he would have energized his base.

But he caved and then gave the lame George Bush excuse - we had to support the Military. What Bullshit. We're not fighting a war. And we're not going to lose the next one because we spend $750 billion instead of $710 Billion.
