Why are colleges rejecting the prominent high school activist David Hogg?

TMZ reports:
David has been rejected by the 4 University of California campuses where he submitted applications -- UCLA, UCSD, UCSB and UC Irvine. He says the rejection letters came 2 weeks ago. He has a 4.2 GPA and an SAT score of 1270.
1270 is slightly above the average SAT score for UC Irvine. Numbers aren't enough, of course. Soft variables matter. But the teenager's activism, organizing the March For Our Lives, is extraordinary. So it's almost as if the schools are repelled by him (in secret) — the way many gun-rights people are repelled (openly). What's up schools? Are your values phony? Do you want pliable mush minds to shape and not an irksome, pesky, know-it-all, loudmouth kid?

This is — I hypothesize — what happens when institutions internalize political activism and why youthful political activism cannot be what it was in the 1960s.

I haven't watched David Hogg's political speeches, only this video. To my eye, he looks stressed and troubled. I don't know how independent he is, who if anyone is using or abusing him, how much sleep he gets, how confused and addled he may feel after such an intense time in the spotlight (immediately after the trauma of the Parkland massacre).

I wish some school with a traditional, structured approach to education would reach out to him so he'd have a good place to develop his mind and get some footing for his activism. He should want to avoid the shapers of pliable mush minds to give himself a chance to grow into mature political activism... or to turn his back on the whole thing and do something else with his life.

The UC schools also have a preference for California residents.

Did he apply to Florida A&M?

I doubt that Hogg organized the "March For Our Lives". I think he's just the poster-child.

Sally327 said...

Hogg is not a CA resident and these are all state schools, who I think do have a preference requirement of some kind for CA residents. Plus the UC system is very competitive, he did get into at least one of the CSU schools. He presumably would have no problem getting into UF or FSU of UCF or any of the FL public universities.

how much sleep he gets

I know how busy my teenagers are and I wonder how on earth these Parkland kids have time for all of this.

My eldest just received her SAT scores on Saturday: 1420, plus a 4.1 GPA. I've been running those numbers into calculators left and right and she only has an estimated 49% chance of getting into UCSD (we looked because we freaking love San Diego and I'd love to have an excuse to move there). Raw numbers, with no other factors; I don't know what Hogg brings to the table, but my point is that a LOT of people with lackluster SAT scores like he has don't get into the sexier UC campuses.

On a human level, I have been appalled at the callousness of elevating these young people into the public eye in the immediate aftermath of an extremely frightening, personally traumatic event. Anger, rage, fear, and despair are best processed in private. Saint Emma and Hogg have the devil to pay. This isn't good.

Comanche Voter said...

Because he is borderline qualified; because there is internal pressure on the Universitu of California system to accept more, rather than fewer California residents; because the folks at UC think less of Hogg than Hogg thinks of himself.

Three possible explanations. On the preference for California residents---for a while the UC system was accepting a rather larger number of out of state applicants because out of state tuition fees were higher, and the UC system had a budget shortfall.

Are wealthy Chinese families who pay full freight now propping the system up, like they are at the University of Washington?

Yes, it does. It may mean he's a hard worker, industrious and conscientious — but it may mean he took easy classes, used methods of scoring well that are illegitimate, or received the pseudo-benefit of inflated grading.

I've done a lot of law school admissions work, and you often get people whose GPA and standardized test scores are out of whack. The mismatch raises questions, but the phenomenon occurs all the time. I was mildly amused by the argument (which I saw approximately 99% of the time) that whichever number was the high one was the real indicator of the applicant's worth and that the low number did not represent what the student could do.

I got accepted everywhere I applied but I knew where to apply.

I agree with this, with the addition of his college acceptance woes. That stings for anyone; certainly having strangers discuss it can't feel good.

What's the mystery? California Affirmative Action admissions are used to favor African-Americans and Mexican immigrants. This honky from Florida has no place in that favor and no claims he can make to get it.

Most colleges love out of state students because they pay 2-3 times as much in tuition as in state students. Kids seem to place weight on how much something costs rather than quality - "knowing the price of everything but the value of nothing."

Did Althouse miss the part of the video where he lists the 4 schools where he was accepted? That is also in the news story. Or is she dissing the 4 schools? I would suspect that his applications were submitted before he started his activism, so what they were judging was the pre-active David. It would be somewhat awkward to amend your application with this new information. So the schools are just supposed to know?

The relevant comparison is not the schools’ average SAT for all students but their average SAT for white out of state males.

Balfegor said...

First, 4.2 just means he's taken a number of AP courses, no? Without being able to see what those courses are, and how he actually performed on them (e.g. was he taking all APs, and it's straight B's with a couple A's?), I don't know how impressive that actually is.

Second, all his extremely public activism is coming now, not, say, in November, when he could have put it on his applications. If they already rejected him, maybe that's because he was normal before, and his frenzied activism now wasn't previewed in his application.

Third, he's White. Not as tough as being Asian in applications, but UC Irvine (for example), is 30% Latino. When you look at those averages, you have to think about what the breakdown of the student body into that average is. I don't know the statistics for the UC system (nor do I care to look them up), but in general Hispanic scores are lower than Asian or White scores. UC system isn't allowed to use "race" in applications, but like anyone hell-bent on engaging in race discrimination, their admissions officers know perfectly well how to look for facially-neutral proxies for race, and do what they can. So the "real" cutoff for our young Master Hogg may actually be significantly higher than it looks based on raw data.

I went through the applications process with my son a year ago. So here's my take.

The shooting was in February, so he had no time to update his application to put it on there. Application deadlines were in December, unless the UCal system uses a rolling application system.

The vetters at the schools didn't recognize his name. Yes, he's been in the news, but it's amazing these days how difficult it is to be universally known. And the people who process these applications have thousands of them to move through at a time. Applications also don't come with photos attached.

Otherwise, he's a white, out-of-state student with high grades and a middling SAT and I'm guessing nothing else of interest about him. Nothing special about him in their eyes, and with the heavy emphasis on checking the diversity boxes, a lot against him.

Mm, that's Cal Poly, Cal State San Marcos and Florida Atlantic University. The only one I've even heard of is Cal Poly, and it's comparable to a middling UC school. I would put it a few notches below UCLA. Cal Poly is a lot Whiter than UC Irvine (which is much more heavily Asian).

Applications obviously were filed months ago, so they may have been in the rejection pile for quite a while.

"4.2, but only 1270. Doesn't quite jive."

What that probably indicates is that he's taken a lot of honors classes. Many school systems encourage students to take harder honors courses by giving them a GPA boost in that class.

Back in the day 1270 was an exceptional score. I guess it still represents a pretty smart kid. The median SAT score is 1080.

I would think that David Hogg submitted his college applications -- including essays, extracurriculars, etc. -- months ago. So this story could just be the bureaucracy grinding through its own paces using old information.

Why does he want to move to California? Is his family from here?

Or does he see California as a Mecca for progressive activism, so he's really just wanting a ticket to come here so that he can do all the things he wants to do in activism. Which makes it sound like he's not really invested in whatever school accepts him.

I'm just struck by how many California schools he applied to, even second tier.

Also, why all public California schools?

@Althouse, consider the possibility that his counselors and teachers did not write very strong recommendations because he's a total pain in the ass.

At any rate I've sure Evergreen State would be glad to have him -- with his taste for violent rhetoric towards his political opponents he would fit right in with a student body that runs around with baseball bats to square around faculty that does not toe the line. Also, for some inexplicable reason their applications are falling off, so they'd be glad to have him apply even if he had had a lobotomy.

Contra to what some people are saying about how easy it is to get into FL schools, I would beg to differ. My dotter was significantly more attractive of a student than Mr. Hogg - higher grades at a better FL school, terrific extra-curriculars, multiple 4's and 5's on the AP, higher SAT, and really neat extra curricular stuff.

She got big scholarship offers out of state but skunked by all the FL schools. Seriously 0 for 4.

He has a right to be accepted by any school he wants? Particularly out of state schools?

Likely his recent activism is a strong deviation from his past activities and wasn't included in his applications and weren't considered in these acceptances/rejections. CalPoly is a fine school.

Frankly you can get a fine undergraduate education at hundreds of schools and they won't cost you $65k a year. Of course, you have to stick clear of the politicized courses and have a good perspective on the mind-warping that occurs in college-life today.

I think he definitely should take some time off to grow and mature (boy, does he need that). Getting a real job or joining the army would help.

Wouldn't he have submitted his applications late last year? His applications wouldn't have any mention of a tragedy that never happened, and by the time it did happen, the decisions had likely been made. Which again raises the issue of why so California focused? And highlights how he seems to be using the tragedy for his own gain. Which, of course, would make him a model California politician, but first he has to find a way to get here. Sounds like he's finding his ticket in the ways he can.

But the teenager's activism, organizing the March For Our Lives, is extraordinary.

Where's the evidence that he's organized anything to do with this? On the contrary:

The March for Our Lives permit application was filed by Deena Katz, a co-executive director of the Women's March Los Angeles Foundation. This wasn’t just a little bit of professional activist assistance.

The application lists Katz as the “Person in Charge of Event”.
[...]

Media contacts for March for Our Lives are being handled by 42 West. The agency is a full service PR firm operating out of New York and Los Angeles that represents major celebrities. 42 West was supposedly recommended by George Clooney who was one of a number of major celebrity donors.
[...]

Who are those people? A leaked document reveals that the March for Our Lives Action Fund is actually overseen by six directors and is incorporated in Delaware.

So far we have Los Angeles, New York and Delaware, but not Florida.

Donations are being directed to, “March For Our Lives Fund, 16130 Ventura Blvd Ste 320, Encino, CA 91435.” That matches the listed office address on the application for the Wishnow Ross Warsavsky & Company. The tax firm appears to have no website.

(from http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2018/03/who-runs-march-for-our-lives.html)

Mattress Girl was a Cause Celebrity, but the moment passes and she is now doing Racial Signal Artwork with Cheetos to try to stay relevant (see Althouse's post a few days ago).

Remember Sandra Fluke? She was famous for awhile. There have been many others, but I can't remember them off-hand. They have been used, and their shelf-life is over.

My guess is that Emma will last a little longer, because of the diversity angle: she is Joan of Arc, after all: that's good for a few years.

The college admissions are showing him exactly how the Elite see him: a middling white male. They are glad to use him for now, but for them he is a tool, no different than Stormy Daniels.

My guess is that -- as the elections come closer -- many Democrats will start to discreetly tack away from the Gun Control Movement everywhere that isn't Deep Blue. And he will then be a problem for them: sssssshhhh -- we don't want people thinking we are anti-gun right now, we need the votes of some Deplorables.

And he won't go quietly, because this is all he has. He will become more strident as he sees himself being pushed off the stage they have provided. Maybe they'll give him a meaningless low-level job at a Non-Profit. Like leaving fifty bucks on the nightstand for the hooker.

They are sucking your cock right now, kid, but soon you'll have to be sucking theirs.

In 1967 my SAT verbal was well above-average and my math was below average. Hence my cumulative was solidly average. I believe this accurately reflected whatever it is the SAT is supposed to reflect. I don't have an exceptional intellect, that's for sure. The University of Michigan recognized this and rejected me. On the other hand, Williams College accepted me, and offered me a full scholarship -- if I played football. Yes, it was. The SAT I been through at least one "renormalisation" to boost average scores (1996), and there may have been others. I just know about the 1996 one because I took the test both before and after renorming.

When I graduated HS the top GPA was 4.0, which was all A's. How does students achieve 4.1 and higher GPAs now?

A's in Honors classes and AP classes get scored above a 4.0. It's a bit of a scam to inflate GPA figures (it's not like an A in maths and an A in PE get weighted differently, after all), but that's the way it works.

1. I think the Hogg family lived in CA prior to FL, so it's understandable that the kid might want to go back to CA for college.

2. NO ONE would know where he was admitted, nor denied, unless he chose to make it public, which, I'm sorry, but he clearly did to try and get someone to poke at the admissions offices of these schools so he could get another look. Look at his Twitter feed. He's all about trying to "name and shame" organizations/people.

3. I thought there was something "off" about this kid the second he started being interviewed within hours of the shooting. He is doing nothing to dissuade me of my first impression.

4. I don't like how the media, right or left, is giving ANY of these kids such a prominent platform. That goes for Kyle on the pro-2A side.

5. As a mom of a teen, there is no way in hell I would let my daughter do all of this press. Nope. I think the parents of these kids suck for consenting to it.

There is something physically repellent about Hogg: the weird triangular head, the disturbed-looking eyes and the scrawny body. The fact that, in his teens, he is a willing tool of the State, DEMANDING that Big Brother take more power than he already has, only adds to the creepiness. The raised fist is only repellent icing on the repellent cake.

Precisely.

There are no grass roots lefty movements. They are ALL controlled by the Central Committe.... er...the usual groups.

The already well established lefty activist pipeline, complete with built-in MSM amplification, simply takes whatever "faces" are in vogue at the moment and plugs them in to the pre-fab political activism structure.

This happens over and over again.

But maybe not. I don't see any of this really hurting David in the long run. He has something that is solid gold for college applications. High school grading conventions are notoriously variable, including for AP classes. UCs don't have time to adjust norms for schools 3,000 miles away, and the SAT score may count for more when evaluating a student like Hogg.

The SAT works well for smart boys because boys typically get their academic focus later than girls. If a boy applies with so-so grades and a boffo SAT score, it's easier to take a chance on him. High SAT scores correlate very well with college success.

If Hogg thinks UC is looking for more activist students, he may be miscalculating. There is no shortage of them on any of the campuses.

Pants is right, 1420-ish or ACT 32 is the real median across the board with the UC's. This kid was in hail-Mary pass territory for most of them. His score can work for UC Irvine, Santa Cruz or Merced.

And there are preferences for CA residents, of a sort. There is an admissions guarantee, to the system if not to any given school. If a kid meets the base requirements for UC admission but is rejected by all those applied to, a "fall back" school, usually UC Merced or UC Irvine (this changes I think) offers instant admission.

And then there is the community college transfer process, which is very common. Kids take the "core" classes in a California community college and apply to transfer on the basis of grades.

I would be curious about the demographics at that high school, and, thus, essentially how competitive it is. My guess from what the school and school district tolerated in behaviour, I wouldn’t expect top notch. Point is that a 4.2 is probably easier in schools where everyone isn’t taking AP classes. And, yes, were his > 4.0 classes honors, or AP? At my kid’s prep school, everything was honors, except for AP, which got the 5.0 scale, but with grade inflation, plenty of schools use a 5.0 scale for honors, which are mostly just college prep. As for the AP classes, they come with standardized AP tests, which scores are also, I believe, submitted with the applications. My guess is that with those middling SATs, he probably didn’t get all 5s on the ones he took.

I've been attending the South Side parade since time immemorial and thought the recent two-year hiatus was necessary to restore control and sanity. Banning street sales of beer has had a salutary effect on the festivities.

I used to hang out in Marquette Park (specifically, 63rd & S. Kedzie) which was an Irish and Lithuanian neighborhood, mostly, all the way through the 1990s. Several terrific Irish pubs with old Irish men hanging out in them and Irish traditional music, and you could do an Irish Death March there similar to the Western Avenue/Beverly Death March. And of course there were the Lithuanian restaurants. Then, in the space of 12 months, Marquette Park "turned" and became a violent shithole, Mexican and black gangbangers shooting the place up. I remember how, during that 12 month period, I drove with a friend thought the neighborhood counting the for sale signs. We stopped counting after reaching 500. True story.

Beyond the pale? Cookie? Nah, not at all. He’s most often very erudite.

Time to rewatch the brilliant 1968 film, "Wild in the Streets."

If you're thirty, you're through!
This is the story of Max Frost, 24 years old...President of the United States...who created the world in his own image. To him, 30 is over the hill. 52% of the nation is under 25...and they've got the power. That's how he became President...it's perhaps the most unusual motion picture you will ever see!

I don't dismiss these young folks, Inga, any more than I'd have dismissed Hitler Youth or the Young Stalinists back in the day. Big Tyrants out of Little Statists grow.

Also my very competitive college made us unweight our GPAs for admissions purposes almost twenty years ago. I suspect it is still the same.

"these young folks"

all I am see is that "these young folks" are making the same dumb mistakes as adults, then taking the higher ground.

I have read one of his first interviews with Vox, heis a very foul mouth individual with no interest in public policy.

"Young folks" are fully capable of becoming informs and having an opinion, but that takes the individual after the time of crisis to do their research and make a plan. You just can't get the propaganda of the Women March organizers just spew non-meaningful partisan spew everywhere.

1. He isn't a 'survivor'. He nor his sister were in the building. He's a student. Yes. He probably did have something to share/add to understanding and prevention, but isn't really his goal.

All of his interview is just non-sense and anger, directing not even at the killer what so ever, but republicans and the NRA. He refuses any invite from the President, demanding the President COMES TO HIM.

Who the hell does his think he is? How dare he, make such demands. Sure if he was a parent/sibling of a victim, that would be fine.

It is the same way we give anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan her voice, because her lost is real even if you happen to disagree.

California has two public university systems, the other being Cal State, and then there is of course the community college system.

On the whole the Cal State system is on a "warm body" admissions standard, with a few exceptions, Cal Poly being the biggest. There are schools and majors that are respectable in the system, notably Chico State for engineering tech, San Jose State electrical engineering, etc. And the tuition is very low by modern US standards, its still perfectly feasible to work ones way through college, and with the right course of study its a valuable path of social mobility.

But on the whole for most majors the Cal State system seems a waste of time and money - in this case, the financial waste is on the part of the state, as they pick up much more of the bill than for the UC's. The State system can easily be reorganized into pure vocational training I think, community college with shops and labs. And of course there is tremendous waste in keeping the "college" trappings and administration overhead.

What economic or social need is met by Psychology or Anthropology degrees from Cal State, or similar schools?

The interviewer asks too many leading questions.

Maybe being an immature, egotistical a-hole of no special merit isn't a winning strategy for college admission?"

No worries...maybe he can someday be President.

Sure..after all it worked for Obama.

That remains to be seen. Your characterization of these young people is a bit premature, sounds like a knee jerk rejection due to their stance on current gun laws and the NRA.

The "Cal State" system was originally the state's teachers' college system and did not offer graduate degrees.

They only became "universities" as the UC system filled up and the inflation of college requirements after Duke Power occurred.

David Hogg pushed back against Laura Ingraham, after her attack on him regarding the college rejections. Why did she feel it was necessary to call attention to this? The same reason Althouse did?

Inga, you seem to ignore that HE brought up the subject. Why did he ? I suspect he thinks he can harass a UC school into taking him. I do think he has an inflated opinion of himself.

Oh, my heart bleeds for Mr. "We need diversity" now that it's his ox being gored.

Back in the day, I had a higher GPA than him, an SAT score 200 points higher and a list of extracurriculars longer than my **** (it was long), and Berkeley rejected me "for some reason" probably completely unrelated to being the wrong race.

Boo-hoo.

Michael K,

As usual the left wingers here have no interest in understanding the full story, only advancing the party line.

I wouldn't characterize it as harassmen, he thinks he can get reconsidered due to his current anti 2nd amendment activism. And it wouldn't surprise me if he is correct.

Anyone else who went on TMZ and said something would be considered fair game for comment. So let's put away the double standards.

What was Laura supposed to do, have yet another discussion about the role of guns in school shootings? Is there something new he might add to the discussion, or something he failed to say in his many other appearances on many other outlets?

He got to say his message to a large TV audience. In exchange he got asked about something he said on TMZ. That's exactly how TV works. Without that there was no reason to have him on.

Maybe he’s just stupid. Certainly everything he says about guns is stupid.

At a minimum he lacks common sense and any sense of humility, given he’s just another ignorant kid.

“I do think he has an inflated opinion of himself.”

When you get to "I'm the one you've been waiting for" territory, you're overinflated way beyond a few PSI.

Since he believes his words are so powerful he should call for admitted students to boycott those schools. Perhaps even drop out and go somewhere else.

Then he'd see how much actual mind control over people he has.

That could be it and is more evidence of his high opinion of himself. I used "inflated" advisedly.

Inga, one benefit of getting old is that one can look back on one's real accomplishments.

He has now been inflated to the point where he's not sure he needs college. World Changer trumps BS degree.

Why is he focused on going to college in California (in a state school)? The standard of living is dropping like a lead balloon. The traffic is oppressive, the cost of housing is high, etc. People are not especially friendly. The beaches are overrated.

He has a growth in both ears than needs medical attention. What does he plan on majoring in? "School shootings" is not an approved major. Rest assured, there will be future mass shootings, and rekindled outrage.
The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, is crazy. Crazy people who can legally obtain high-powered weapons is craziness on steroids. We're asking for it. Justice Stevens is right: all hunters & trappers belong in jail. They kill for fun, so they're not normal. They must be excised from a compassionate society. I'd exercise my right to excise a whole bunch of execrable people from this stinking world exceedingly urgently. A lot of those odorous cretins have nothing better to do than troll around here spewing right-wing pollution. Lock 'em up!

This noodle armed fetal alcohol syndrome faced little cunt is only good for increasing NRA membership and costing democrats house seats in November.

Inga, I agree that we should not dismiss these young people.

We should respect them much as we respect a knife, club or firearm -- harmless in and of themselves, but dangerous when wielded by a capable entity who intends us harm.

WHY these entities intend us harm, I don't know. As an example, members of American gun culture (such as NRA members) are scrupulously observant of not only laws but social conventions.

I'd think that these entities would want to encourage and support that sort of thing -- especially that so many OTHER parts of the progressive platform depend on defining laws and social conventions in their favor.

But no, an outright assault targeted with pinpoint precision on that very segment of society!
