For $25 million, you can by the 8,000-square-foot, 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom Tribeca loft with its huge Keith Haring mural...

... painted by Haring in 1979 when he was a student at the School of Visual Arts and the building was student gallery space.

Click through to the photographs of the fabulous place, at "Keith Haring Created a Mural in a TriBeCa Loft. Now, It’s for Sale. The renovated apartment featuring a once hidden early work by the New York artist is on the market for $25 million" (NYT).

The space was a restaurant for many years after the SVA moved out in the 1980s, and the mural was walled in by sheet rock. It was "uncovered it in 2007 and found to be in good shape, considering it was painted in the less than durable mix of shoe polish and alcohol."

The artwork is at one with the building: "It was painted onto one of the iron columns that holds up the building. It was painted into an iron beam, and on the ceiling and walls." So, it's valuable, but you can't detach it and sell it. In fact, you'll be obligated to take care of it. And, remember, it's painted in shoe polish.

ADDED: A smart comment over there: "As cool as that space is - it just doesn't feel like a home and living on the ground level with giant windows in the middle of SoHo? Perhaps it should go back to SVA or serve some other purpose so more than one rich techbro can enjoy the artwork."

Shoe polish and alcohol? Sounds like a drunken Blackface episode.

My best friend in high school went to Parsons and chummed around with Haring a bit. I was mid 80s so like everyone else had no idea this existed..:

Looks like a cool place. The artwork is unfortunate, but will probably come off with a little rubbing alcohol.

My god are these people insufferably joyless and envious little pricks.

$25 million is a bit beyond my reach.

“Loft”? Since when is a ground floor condo with 7 bedrooms & 9 bathrooms called a loft?

And the NYT commenter doesn’t understand that NYC doesn’t have “tech bros.” It has “finance bros.”

I definitely will by it and not buy it. Bye-bye!

The smart commenter could bi it to keep some heteropatriarchist techbro from enjoying the art.

Do you think it still has a shoe polish smell?

It went on the market today. The same day the People's Daily, aka The New York Times, runs this coordinated promotional piece.

It was remodeled and sold (listed) for 7.9 million in 2021 and then re-remodeled and now listed again for 25. He's just flipping it. He's rich for a reason.

Also, they found the mural way back in 2001.

Also the "common fees" are 8k per month so budget accordingly.

Also, the Ghostbusters firehouse is right around the corner so you wont have to be afraid of no ghosts. Big plus right there.

It's cool what some old buildings hide. When they gutted the Entertainment Department offices at Knott's to make way for a new pizza restaurant, the concrete walls, behind the walls that were removed, were covered in large, hand painted flowers. It was done in a children's animation style. They were probably painted when the John Wayne theater was built in 1971 and that side of the building faced a lone-gone area of the park that was called "Gypsy Camp."

True, but you can’t tell them apart, they both wear black wool
long sleeve hiking shirts and extra tight jeans.

So, willing seller looking for a willing buyer. Price subject to negotiation. SoHo is an expensive neighborhood and as NYC apartments go, this one is huge. Personally, never been a fan of Keith Haring but someone looking for a little art-world cachet in status-conscious NYC might differ. But the fact that this is getting a big splash in the NYT tells you who that paper is aimed at. But everyone already knew that.

While working on our family office (it's in an old bank building from the early 1900s) in northern Arizona I found an entire room with ornate plaster work and a stamped metal ceiling. The main office has a very high ceiling similar to this loft, and apparently the back of the building also used to before someone decided to partition it off and put in a dropped ceiling, so there's this huge windowless room hidden away between the offices and the attic. The whole thing really should be gutted to bring it back. I absolutely love hidden spaces, so for me, finding this was like a dream come true.

Does the article mention the expected additional fees thanks to the policies of the new Mayor, which are designed to trim unnecessary wealth from the wealthy, and failing that, the unnecessary properties?

Shoe polish, car smell after you get it back from over a week at the mechanic shop, and certain organic trash smell. Or, my sense of smell hasn’t been the same since Covid.

It looks nice - sort of fun to buy and have - if 25 million is just loose change to you. But pretty sure it will be burned soon in some French Revolution re-enactment.

Maybe they could turn it into the Biden library!

no, wait, they can't afford it
