When the sunrise photographs do not include the sun, it's either because no photo with the sun was among the best photos in the set or because the sun failed to pop. It's back there behind the clouds, we can trust, but the clouds are blocking the popping. Today was one of those days when the clouds won out. They seemed thin and wispy enough that we couldn't know until a few minutes after the sunrise time, and we waited out the time in the bitter cold.

Write about whatever you want in the comments.

Those are pretty good photos. Wispy or not, the clouds make the picture.

I usually like 'em best without the actual sun. The pix are beautiful but, as in many things, the suggestion often stirs the mind and the heart more powerfully than the graphic close-up.

“Finally, to the great proud people of the Democrat Party, when we are finished, take over your Party. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations. For many years, you have asked for America’s help, but you never got it. The Democrat leadership made promise after promise. They never delivered. Now you have a president who is giving you what you need. So let’s see how you respond. Now is the time to seize control of your Party and to unleash the prosperous and glorious future that is close within your reach. This is the moment for action. Do not let it pass.“

They all look the same every day now. Boring.
This isn't exactly the variety of monet's garden... a flat industrial skyline with a mix of the same colors orange pink blue grey white etc.

Dont you ever think of finding a different spot to shoot, or are you just committed to your rut and afraid to mix things up?

At least some days there are ducks so we know you're not just rerunning the same shots while you doze in bed.

How many sunrises have you watched and the best descriptive word you use is pops?

No ma'am, look again. It climbs, but there's never a pop where the whole thing appears all at once, like with a toaster.

I played Commandment in the Fountain of Youth. He is a grandson of Orb, who won the same race plus the Florida Derby over that track. Orb has not succeeded at stud and now stands in Uruguay, but his daughter Sippican Harbor was a G1 SW at Sar before retiring early. She's the best Orb got in class, and her colt has a big genetic edge at Gulfstream thanks to his grandsire. Both grandsires, in fact.

On his father's side, the grandsire is Harlan's Holiday, who won the Florida Derby and the Donn Handicap. He was second in the Fountain of Youth, beaten by .... a nose. So this is a family, or two families, that love GP.

A genetic edge for a particular track? Well.... Commandment was all out today to defeat Chief Wallabee, a colt making only his second start. But Chief W is a son of Constitution, who was 3-for-3 over GP, including the Fl Derby and the Donn Handicap, now the Pegasus International. There's a reason the two of them were a few lengths clear of the rest of the field. The Gulfstream strip is pretty sandy dirt and some horses love it and pass that quality on.

Which brings us to Quality Road, who won the same Fountain of Youth stakes and the Florida Derby in his 3yo year, 2009, and then the Donn Handicap at 4.

Quality Road's son City of Light won the Donn in 2019, as the Pegasus World Invitational, and he won it in precisely the same form and almost the identical time as his daddy. You can view their two races on video and the similarities are striking -- like it's the same horse.

And then City of Light's son Fierceness won the Florida Derby at GP in 2024..... by 13 lengths, the best race he ever ran.

There is something in those genes..!

China has developed several anti-ship missiles, with the YJ-12 being one of the most notable. The YJ-12 is a supersonic cruise missile capable of reaching speeds of Mach 2.5 to 4 and has a range of approximately 250 to 270 nautical miles, making it a significant threat to naval forces.

China’s CM-302 flies 460 kilometers at Mach 3, evades interception, carries a 500-kilogram warhead — and is likely headed to Iran. The CM-302 is the export version of the Chinese YJ-12 anti-ship missile. Iran is close to finalizing a deal to buy these anti-ship cruise missiles.

The prospective sale would deepen China-Iran military ties, potentially defy reimposed UN sanctions, and come as US carriers, including the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford, have moved into striking distance. The CM-302 was designed to be launched from H-6K strategic bombers. It says here that the CM-302 is armed with a 500-kilogram warhead capable of putting a three-foot hole in the hull of our most strategic naval assets.

Prof. M. Drout said...

The real capabilities of Chinese military engineering aren't well known (at least publicly), but a reasonable assumption is that they will follow the same overwhelming-quantities-of-cheap-crap approach that they take to commerce. It is likely that they'll use low-quality materials and that quality assurance will be weak, so a fairly large fraction of the drones or missiles will fail to launch or won't reach the target or will blow up at the wrong time--but there will be so many of them that it might not matte. Even if only 75% of them work, 75% of a very large number is still a very large number. Our stuff is much more reliable in part because defense companies protected their profits after the GWOT by swapping quantity for expensive quality.
The big question is if that is enough to deter China? Because thanks to a chain of short-sighted and strategically moronic decisions, most of which go back to Bush Jr, we don't have even a fraction of the mass-quantity manufacturing capacity that China now has. The question is whether or not we can rebuild that capacity fast enough that we won't need to use it.
The next few years are going to be exceedingly dangerous ones in the Pacific. The people Trump put in place are trying to close our window of vulnerability, but that might perversely be an incentive for China to strike earlier, before the window is shut.
The Japanese election is a real wild card, because Chinese people in their 30s and 40s have been taught since birth to believe that Japan would like nothing better than to Nanking them again in an instant, so there is fear of Japan disproportionate to Japan's capabilities or intentions. Does the election cause China to do something precipitous, or does it deter them?
Also, China's window for projecting power is limited by their demographic crisis. Perhaps the only Western idea more destructive than Marxism has been the Population Crisis delusion that led to the viciously enforced One Child policy.
China's window of strength to be militarily aggressive will be starting to shut at the same time as the U.S. window of vulnerability, which means that if they are determined to take Taiwan militarily, sooner is better than later.
Hopefully the display of U.S. military capabilities in Venezuela and Iran deters China long enough for this dangerous moment to pass, but it--and the loss of Venezuelan and Iranian oil--could have the opposite effect.

Better against fixed targets. That’s because the faster the missile goes, the less well it can turn. And the less well it’s going to be able to communicate. At hypersonic speeds, the missile is flying in almost a plasma. This makes any sort of radio communications problematic. On the flip side, that sort of heat is going to make the missile extremely visible. This isn’t that much of a problem with stationary targets. But Carrier Strike Groups are very fast, and the fastest in such a group is the carrier itself. So, the logical response to an attack by this sort of missile is to just go somewhere else. Then, when the missile goes subsonic, and is able to communicate and maneuver, be far enough away that the missile either can’t find the target, or can’t change direction fast enough. And remember, the carrier strike group can detect the incoming missiles from a significantly longer distance than the missiles can detect them. At least, the Chinese have satellites that can aid in this. Not so the Iranians who were supposed to be using these missiles to sink our aircraft carriers.

I still think that surface skimming cruise missiles are the way to go. They are harder to detect, since they almost disappear in the clutter of waves that they are skimming over. And you can redirect them in real time, as the carrier and its strike group veer off in response to missile attacks. If you have sufficient satellite capacity to see what the ships are doing. Which the Iranians didn’t.

But, then, the Chinese are unlikely to even attack a carrier strike group, because if they succeeded, they would immediately face nuclear retaliation. We have consistently had the position that sinking or even significantly damaging, a carrier would result in nuclear retaliation. And while the Russians have a few more nuclear warheads than the US does, the US supply completely dwarfs China’s inventory. And while Obama might have cheered the Chinese on, or Biden already asleep for the day, Republican Presidents would carry out their threats.

Bruce Hayden said...

One of the funny things that we see from the left is that Sec Hegseth is incompetent and doesn’t listen to, or ignores his generals and admirals. He was a mere field grade officer, who never attended War College, etc. But there is a saying to never trust anyone O-6 or above (some say O-5 or above). Esp in pease (or quasi peace) time, they become too political. And under Obama and Biden, that meant focusing on DEI and sustainability goals, at the expense of their core mission - to break things and kill the enemy.

What Trump and Hegseth have done is to reorient our military to its core mission. And that has been spectacularly successful. Instead of the debacle of our idiotic withdrawal from Kabul, planned by those generals and admirals that Trump and Hegseth are supposed to be listening to, they have been able to surgically eliminate the Iranian nuclear weapons program, then decapitate both the Venezuelan and Iranian governments, with negligible loss of American lives and equipment. Meanwhile, military recruiting is way up, transitioning from all the services missing their recruiting goals, to surpassing them months before the end of the year - in under a year.
