How New York City really looks in the snow.

My son Chris happens to be sojourning in NYC in the midst of the big blizzard, which doesn't seem too overwhelming.

He sends these pictures, which make things look more amusing than calamitous:

Hey, that's a cop car!

I hope whoever removed that snow was able to produce two picture IDs and a social security card.

Nice photos. I'd be more concerned with icy sidewalks if I lived in NYC. Or muggers.

I was in memphis once during an ice storm. The 100 yard walk from hotel to the work site was pure hell. Baby steps, like walking through a minefield hoping you wouldn't slip and fall. Of course no one cleared the ice. In Memphis that's mothers natures job.

This is not nearly as bad as Chicago, for snow melts pretty quickly near the ocean. Chicago = dingy black spots and gray piles.

I really don't like cold weather but the pictures I saw on the weather channel produced some sort of primal urge in my bones to head north and go play in the snow.

I got over it. Might have just been gas.

Have they considered banning all passenger cars in Manhatten? Maybe mandingo can do that. Just have buses, Taxis and city vehicles.

@RCOCEAN, agree. I'll take snow over ice any day, and freezing rain/ice being more common is about the only thing I dislike about moving south of the Ohio.

That second photo doesn't look too amusing if you're the one who has to move the snow.

How does a police car become abandoned and unusable, rather than tucked away in a dry garage?

In Manhattan, the precinct houses don't have parking lots. They were built in the old flatfoot days and just have some reserved spots on the curb. Hence the classic NYPD perp walk: there's no private area to park the squad car and unload prisoners. If they have more cars than that for whatever reason, they just park as close as they can find a spot. CC, JSM

Ugh! A snowman with a handbag! A handbag!?

baghdadbob said...

John Mosby, given that thousands of commuter garage spots are right now lying empty due to suburban people staying home (I used to have one in Midtown), the cops could easily tuck into one and keep their cars usable. This is incompetence. And what is the "CC" before "JSM." Carbon copy?

It's in the 70's here today, and will be in the 80's this week. Some Like it Hot. That would be me. I love the southwest.

And I'll bet it's one of those knock-off bags sold by Nigerians on Canal Street.

What's this obsession with NYC's problems about any way? Trains collide in Ohio, dams burst in NC, fires out west, and it causes only a quick mention on CNN's headline crawler. Look, Mamdahmi's got this covered. Get back to the culture trivia, fashion, show biz gossip, and sports. Sheesh.

CC stands for Charlie Chai. Charlie as in Kirk (hyd). Chai = ‘lives’ in Hebrew. Like Kahane Chai, the name of Rabbi Meir Kahane’s (hyd) movement after his assassination. CC, JSM

Oakland's post office has no parking lot, so all the USPS jeeps and vans are covered in graffiti.

That is a good idea to park the squad cars in an empty commuter garage, though. I bet the owners would be afraid to be seen as pro-cop, sadly. CC, JSM

Thanks for clearing that up, JM.

Ok, thanks JSM. But weren't you doing the CC thing before the Kirk murder?

An albino snowman, with black eyes for the big apple? Where is the Diversity? There is no pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow. Catastrophic.

Hyd is a Hebrew acronym for ‘May his blood be avenged.’

Saying Charlie Chai means his ideas survive and are being implemented by those of us left behind.

Rabbi Kahane hyd was the founder of the Jewish Defense League here and the Kach party in Israel. He was a native New Yorker and an active Israeli politician. His strategy was basically terror against terror, so not like Kirk in that respect. He was locked up multiple times by both US and Israeli authorities.

Kahane was killed in NYC by an Egyptian who later took part in the first WTC bombing. His followers founded Kahane Chai. So in that sense he is like Charlie. CC, JSM

I used to sign off with RR for Ravishing Regards, which was the sign off of the busy ditch who sued Trump for sexual assault in Bergdorf’s.

But then life got serious. CC, JSM

I am not seeing a handbag. The snowman is wearing an apron and carrying a cup. I think he is a waiter.

Unless they're black or governor of California. In which case, they're too dumb to.

I saw that one other requirement was no COVID-19 symptoms:

"Registration is now open.

You must bring the following to your appointment:

Two small photos (1.5 inch square)
The photos must be the same style as those used for a passport.
Social Security card
Two forms of identification (original and copy), such as:
Driver license
Passport
School photo ID
IDNYC card
You should not attend the appointment if you have any COVID-19 symptoms."

Will Mandami bring back lockdowns? Wouldn't surprise me.

With the ID issue, has there been a more incredible example of cognitive dissonance in recent memory?

When I'm in NYC, Westway Diner is my favorite breakfast spot. Classic American food. Good service. Reasonable prices.

In Madmani's defense, the ID requirement for the shovel job is mostly for the federal I-9 form (Employment Eligibility Verification), isn't it? Plus maybe a little bit of NYC's civil-service rules; after all, it is the birthplace of real Progressivism, like Tammany Hall-busting progressivism. There probably are a lot of city regs designed to make sure a real person corresponds to every job on the payroll.

Tease Madmani too much on this, and the city may repeal their civil-service code and declare a sanctuary policy for all city employees. CC, JSM

At least they didn't get stolen like the mayors city owned SUV last week.

Mrs Maynard and I have a 6 am flight to NYC tomorrow.

I will report on conditions, if possible.

We will be leaving Tucson where it is 78 and sunny. I guess global warming only affects deserts.

Allah bless Madami!

His promised socialist free snow removal service has certainly come true- in the sense that it certainly been snow removal free...

Perhaps he messed up the word order? Of course! Whyvit's (D)yslexia he suffers from- a common malignant affliction found in overrated, hypocritical leftists politicians.

Mr. T. said...

And look at that crisp white (but still full of (D)yslexia allyship) snow! Not a single yellow spot to be seen...

See now the blessings of having an theocratic socialist in charge of NYC to wage jihad against ::checks notes:: dogs.

Because in some snow storms the snow falls so fast and thick you can't go anywhere. Even with snow tires. The best thing to do is pull over and wait. Either that or get stuck in the middle of the street so a snow plow can't get through.
Maybe the two cops are still in there. Waiting for the plow.

Picture IDs : Everyone thinks that it's a good idea to require an ID to vote, but you complain that you need proof of identification to get a job with the city?

People are welcome to shovel snow for free in NY? Just go shovel snow.

The IDs are needed for people who want a temporary job shoveling snow and to get paid for it. It weeds out identity theft, prevents hiring illegal aliens, and provides the information the government needs to send you a tax form at the end of the year.

Bringing your actual social security card seems a little excessive, but for the most part these are the normal things you would need to get a job and an ID card for the job.

Bunkypotatohead said...

Well, if the mayor is in favor of defunding the police, he probably won't have their vehicles shoveled out of the snow. And the cops union contract probably doesn't require them to do it either.
