"WTF is going on here with Michael Wolff giving PR strategy to Jeffrey Epstein?"

Said the podcaster Brian Reed, quoted by The Guardian in "Blurred lines: how Michael Wolff aspired to be part of elite circles he wrote about/The writer who features prominently in newly released Jeffrey Epstein emails has achieved extraordinary access but faced questions about his journalistic ethics."

Wolff's attempt at an explanation: "I was engaged then in an in-depth conversation with Epstein about his relationship with Trump and this seems to be part of that conversation."

The Guardian also quotes what NYT reporter Maggie Haberman said about Wolff back in 2018 (when his Trump-bashing book "Fire and Fury" came out: "He believes in larger truths and narratives.... So he creates a narrative that is notionally true, that’s conceptually true; the details are often wrong."

Reminds me of the old Ratherism "fake but accurate."

Back to The Guardian: "Wolff gains the trust of his powerful and wealthy subjects, he told [Politico's Ben] Smith, in part because he himself goes into 'a bit of a Walter Mitty trance that he could be living their lives, something they can sense and appreciate.' Over the past two decades, Wolff has turned that Walter Mitty guise – that projection that he wants to be 'one of them'– into a journalistic conveyor belt.... Steve Bannon, the rightwing provocateur, gave Wolff exceptional access to the West Wing in the initial flush of Trump’s first presidency, during which the writer was allowed to wander around freely, entirely unchaperoned..... 'Fire and Fury' led to Bannon’s estrangement from Trump.... Epstein, according to Wolff, wanted him to write his biography, while Wolff wanted to extract details of Epstein’s longstanding friendship with Trump for use in 'Fire and Fury.'..."

I guess that answers the question "WTF is going on here with Michael Wolff giving PR strategy to Jeffrey Epstein?" He wasn't colluding with Epstein. He was conning Epstein. He had a journalistic modus operandi, one that irked Maggie Haberman and Ben Smith (for good reason).

Here's Wolff explaining himself (in 2018):
And here's Fred Armisen impersonating him on "SNL" back then:

Honestly do not understand why these emails are considered some kind of smoking gun against Trump. Reading them carefully, there’s no there-there. In fact, the wording implies that Epstein could choose to construct a narrative based on innocent facts (such as that Trump was merely present in Epstein’s house) and then threaten Trump with the falsehood and innuendo. Alternatively, they could pretend to be on Trump’s side and assure him that they wouldn’t support speculation that Trump had behaved inappropriately with young women.

These women all have obviously signed NDAs and been paid to keep quiet. If any of them had even the slightest evidence Trump abused a single woman they would be an instant multimillionaire.

2. Even the "conning Epstein" supposition is too generous. Wolff was also coaching Epstein to blackmail Trump (probably to make Mr. W's eventual book even juicier!).
3. Journalism has an ethics and a tradition, even if few are still observed by most Corporate News anymore, and "conning" a source is but one of Wolff's many ethical lapses. Adding the prefix "Access" to Journalism (see "Michael Wolff and Access Journalism) does the same for the base noun as adding "social" to Justice does for that one.

We realize that these files have a lot of personal information of people who were asked to testify in grand juries who were promised confidentiality if charges were not filed.

We realize these women were paid through NDA's and they have mostly all decided to keep the money rather than file charges publicly.

We realize that Trump isn't a dictator who can jest release whatever files he wants. We realize that leaking files like the Democrats are doing undermines the entire system.

Really it just comes down to being an adult and being able to think abstractly about how systems work and future consequences of actions.

Hundreds of thousands of children came across the border illegally without parents during the 4 years of the Biden administration. They were counted and documented by ICE but told they had to release these children to the custody of other illegals they dumped in the country.

They were all released into our country by the Biden administration and completely forgotten.

ICE under Trump has found thousands of them. Funny how democrats are trying to stop ICE from finding these trafficked children.

Quaestor said...

"Why wouldn’t every MAGA Republican want to expose all those Democrats by releasing the files?"

They'd love too, but it would make them look foolish if the files were just a comforting myth.

I'm at a loss to understand why so many people assume Epstein kept incriminating files. Such documents are detective fiction boilerplate, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" (Sherlock Holmes) and continuing through "The Big Sleep" (Philip Marlowe), and far beyond. The detective discovering the hidden blackmail photograph or decoding the encrypted list of victim compacts the narrative the way pulp publishers admire. However, real crime doesn't follow those rules. Generally, criminals operate without files. They don't pay taxes on their ill-gotten gains. They don't have fiduciary obligations to stockholders. The Mafia are never audited, and Epstein has never been shown to have blackmailed anyone. Instead, from all real evidence, he liked underage girls and famous company. From all real evidence, his crimes were mostly statutory rape, and little else. Epstein was just a garden-variety prevert, which ought to have made him very popular with the party that thinks men can transform into women and pedophilia is just another valid lifestyle. The files are just another flat-earth delusion.

There are plenty of bad actors in politics, however, on balance, most don't go on vacations or develop long-term relationships with a child sex-trafficker who has been credibly involved in hundreds if not more than a thousand cases of abuse. The fact that the trafficker also had ties to at least one intelligence agency and was effectively protected for years by major political figures is another issue. This isn't like some politician steering a few million dollars to friends, families, and political supporters, or engaging in more routine acts of political patronage. When we talk about a violation of the public trust, there are degrees of difference that matter.

The reality is that sometimes conspiracies are also true and there are "hidden power networks". Anyone who even spends a little time looking at the Epstein case — seeing how things were reported not just in one moment — but over the course of decades has to wonder. Maybe it was just an incredibly coincidental turn of history that the person who was initially involved in overseeing the case -- Bill Barr — who was involved in a sleazy cover-up involving Iran-Contra, also happened to have a father who helped Epstein get his first job at the Dalton School forty years earlier (at a time when Epstein only had a high school degree). These are documented facts.

Epstein's association with Robert Maxwell's daughter -- another person with close ties to intelligence agencies — is another one of those "coincidences" that just seems way too rich to be a historical accident.

Do rich and powerful people engage in egregious misbehavior and then use their social networks to protect themselves? Is that a "conspiracy" or is it just a fact? In this particular instance, why were rich and powerful people around Epstein willing to put their names and reputations on the line to ensure that Epstein received incredibly lenient treatment? e.g. actions that the DOJ even flagged in its review of the Epstein case in 2020.

The child abuse aspects of this case are not in dispute either. Why did this one person receive such an absurd level of protection and such lenient treatment? Let's begin with that fact. Why were so many people involved in that lenient treatment rewarded with future political advancement, rather than having their careers absolutely destroyed, as would be the case in any other normal professional sphere?
It is pretty obvious why this case hits close to home for Trump. Bondi was Attorney General in Florida at a time when Epstein's activities were open and notorious, and she did nothing. In Trump's first up term, he rewarded Alex Acosta with a cabinet position (Acosta was involved in the initial prosecution of Epstein when he was a U.S. Attorney and provided an agreement with incredibly favorable release terms for Epstein that was largely seen as a farce).

Only a fool would believe that Trump has any interest in "protecting the innocent". The same is true with other politicians who maintained a close relationship with Epstein through the years. I'm sure there are Trump supporters who will try to rationalize what is going on. But I suspect this is one of those cases where there are going to be many who start to see Trump with clearer eyes going forward. Trump has always been sleazy, which is one reason he was able to maintain a close relationship for years with Epstein. He and Bill Clinton probably maintained the same close relationship for years for the same reasons. Even if they didn't actively engage in the kind of abuse Epstein was involved in, they were almost certainly aware of what was going on. Trump even alluded to it as well in previous comments about how Epstein "liked them young”.

If you mean an extraordinary evil man, you're correct. It is interesting how he managed to leave Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia and managed to end up in England in 1940, despite being a Jew of fighting age. Supposedly, the last sort of person the nazi's would let through their fingers.

After that came an equally mysterious rise to riches despite allegations of shady business practices, links to Soviet intelligence, and a lack of business acumen.

Then after being made a Newspaper "Tycoon", Maxwell suddenly started selling software. Per Wikipedia: "Maxwell is alleged to have distributed a bugged version of a software, PROMIS, to a plethora of national governments and global financial institutions that enabled mass spying by the government of Israel."

After Maxwell's death it emerged he's stolen money from pension funds to help keep his business going. Some pensioners got 1/2 their promised pension as a result.

And if wikipedia is to be believed the company declared bankruptcy with 400 million in debts, with the directors going to trial for conspiracy to defraud. I guess someone "madoff" the money.

It's even worse than that. A pilot DNA test showed that 20 or 30 percent of the children apprehended at the border with their "family" were in fact unrelated to the adults who were shepherding them across. The Biden administration responded by ignoring this fact, releasing the children to the custody of the men claiming to be their fathers-- never to be seen again in many cases-- and issued strict orders cancelling any future DNA tests.

That's right. The diabolically, ontologically evil Democrat scum turned a blind eye to what was almost certainly mass trafficking of vulnerable children by unrelated adults, because to them there is nothing in heaven or earth as important as clinging to political power by keeping the replacement immigration train on the rails.

Understanding the power of Jeffrey Epstein, should readily be linked to global militarism and authoritarianism. Epstein trafficked not just in the bodies of the children he abused but also in social connections that could bring elites together. He well understood that the “desperation of those in power” could make them eager to buy what he was selling: connections with other powerful figures and security systems to clamp down on dissent. The many mysteries surrounding Epstein’s wealth and social connections have long fueled speculation that he had been an asset of the CIA or Mossad.

Never forget to never trust Steve Bannon. He and that low-rent Jenny Beth Martin (who should use some of the money she stole from seniors to work on her fake accents) convinced a bunch of politically naive but very decent people in Georgia that their "votes would be stolen" if they voted and thus lost us the Senate. Two seats.

Steve's pathetic, chaotic, not even lit right movie sucked too. What a fucking pathetic amateur. His West Point daughter should be ashamed to have him for a father. He is a disgrace. I know you don't remember me, Steve, but I remember you. Very, very well. You should worry about that.

Now thanks to your lies, Senator Warnock has a path to the presidency: he's actually a very smart guy. Senator Ossoff is just a man-bun from Clarkston who hates female athletes and their privacy in changing rooms. Perv with a man bun.
