(The National Desk, Fri, September 13th 2024 at 10:45 AM) "Multiple Pennsylvania lawmakers this week expressed outrage over a proposal which would see migrants housed in a local abandoned school building.
The Scotland School for Veterans Children was founded in 1895 to educate the children of Pennsylvania service members. Its 185-acre campus in Chambersburg was shuttered in 2009, leaving 70 buildings vacant including a library, gym and chapel.
Indiana-based disaster response company USA Up Star, which currently owns the property, contacted the Greene Township Board of Supervisors in August to inquire about converting the campus to migrant housing. That project, it wrote, involved “working closely with the U.S. Government.”
The board sent a response letter to USA Up Star denying its request to use the property “for purposes of providing shelter.” Township zoning regulations, it wrote, prevented the company from creating the shelter.
The board’s letter mentioned USA Up Star could appeal the decision. However, the board told The National Desk (TND) Friday it has not received a response since issuing its decision.
Lawmakers this week released statements reviling the proposal. Such a plan, they wrote, would have a significant negative impact on the community.
“We are united in our opposition to illegal immigrants being housed by federal government contractors in Franklin County,” a combined press release from state Rep. Rob Kauffman, R-Franklin, and state Sen. Doug Mastriano, R-Adams/Franklin, reads. “We join with our neighbors, friends and constituents committed to defending Franklin County from the foreign invasion coming from our southern border."
Also speaking out were the Franklin County Commissioners, who expressed concern over the increased demand on the county’s limited resources posed by the migrants.
“Though we have no involvement in this project, we do have significant concerns about its impact on our county,” they wrote. “While these minors would be housed on the Scotland campus, the influx of support staff – and their families – would be overwhelming for our local communities.”
“In addition to impacting the housing market, an increase in population puts an increased demand on basic services such as water, sewer, trash removal and broadband,” they added. “It also puts a strain on school systems, child care services, physical and behavioral health care providers, and public safety personnel such as our fire departments, EMS, police and the criminal justice system.”
USA Up Star did not respond to a request for comment from TND via email Friday."

And up in Pennsylvania, Bucks County Commissioners Diane Ellis-Marseglia and Robert Harvie moved to allow for undated or misdated ballots to be counted in the crucial swing county, despite a Nov. 1 state supreme court ruling that undated or misdated ballots cannot be counted. The commissioners voted to do so as the Casey-McCormick Senate race heads to a recount, with McCormick leading by about 25,000 votes
While some attendees and participants in the meeting argued against counting undated or misdated ballots by citing case law, Ellis-Marseglia said that “precedent by a court doesn’t matter anymore in this country” because “people violate laws anytime they want.”
“For me, if I violate this law, it’s because I want a court to pay attention to it,” Marseglia-Ellis said.
Other counties in the state — including Centre County, Philadelphia County and Montgomery County — have also moved to allow undated or incorrectly dated ballots to be counted, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. The Bucks County GOP said in a post to X that it is working with attorneys from the Pennsylvania Republican Party and the Republican National Committee to address the situation in Bucks County.
As the Democrats are fond of saying, laws are for the little people.
"FEMA has not yet publicly responded to Marn’i Washington’s claims.
A former staffer with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) who was fired by the agency for telling staff to skip hurricane-ravaged homes with signs backing President-elect Donald Trump has said it was a common practice at the agency out of precaution for staff safety.
Earlier this week, the director of FEMA confirmed that the worker was terminated after reports and screenshots surfaced over the past weekend indicating that homes that had Trump signs should be skipped. Her messages were captured during the response to Hurricane Milton, which slammed Florida’s western coast in October.
“This was the culture. They were already avoiding these homes, based on community trends, from hostile political encounters,” Marn’i Washington told Fox News. “It has nothing to do with the campaign sign, it just so happened to be a part of the community trend.”
She said she is being used as a scapegoat by the federal relief agency, alleging that the policy came from higher-level officials in FEMA.
(snip)
Washington said that she was made into a scapegoat because she was the one who got caught.
“And it’s easy to then say, ‘Well, ha ha! It’s her name. It’s her writing. Make her accountable for it.’ But I’m just simply executing, again, what was coming down from my superiors,” she said.
(snip)
“I know the highlight here is the Trump campaign signage, but if someone is in another, like an urban community and it’s a different culture and someone feels uncomfortable, we can’t go to that home,” she stated. “If you have loose dogs, and someone on the team was comfortable with dogs and another person is not, we can’t go to that home because of safety precautions.”
She said some Trump supporters expressed appreciation for their work, with some even offering to help, but there were also some incidents reported by FEMA workers that took place at homes with Trump signages.
In another interview with journalist Roland Martin, Washington elaborated that it is common FEMA practice to avoid homes that may have hostile residents inside.
(snip)
Responding to the initial controversy, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell condemned the text messages when they were leaked and said the FEMA staffer was terminated from her position. So far, though, neither Criswell nor FEMA have publicly responded to Washington’s statements to media outlets.
“This is a clear violation of FEMA’s core values and principles to help people regardless of their political affiliation,” she wrote in a post on X on Saturday. “This was reprehensible.” She added that “all of my employees and the American people, this type of behavior and action will not be tolerated at FEMA and we will hold people accountable if they violate these standards of conduct.”
“This employee has been terminated and we have referred the matter to the Office of Special Counsel,” her post continued. “I will continue to do everything I can to make sure this never happens again.”
Florida’s attorney general on Thursday filed a lawsuit against FEMA for allegedly discriminating against Hurricane Milton victims due to their political affiliation in the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton in Lake Placid, Florida. Helene hit Florida in September, followed a few weeks later by Milton in October.
It names Washington and FEMA as defendants in the suit.
A FEMA spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement Friday that the agency does not comment on pending litigation and pointed to Criswell’s statement on the matter. "
