The first one is so bleak, it makes the 2nd one so much better. BTW, does anyone know John Scalzi? The SF writer? What a piece of work he is. The greatest con-artist and self-promoter since PT Barnum. He's left twitter. Too "Rightwing" and now on "Bluesky" where "decent people" can meet and talk without those "nasty" people intruding.
He has 140 thousand followers. Only 4-6 of whom repost his comments. Can we say "fake followers" boys and girls? Anyway, the left always seeks the echo-chamber. Conformity and goose-step. All the while shouting what "Free thinkers" they are. LOL.
On the other hand, most of his SciFi stories have been quite good. I'm so old I don't care about a writer's, or performer's, politics or opinions as long as they produce something I enjoy. Of course, in my dotage, I ignore social media in its' entirety so am not plagued with knowledge of said person's inclination.
Oh no! Pete Hegseth has (1) a tattoo that reads “Deus vult,” which is a Latin phrase meaning “God wills it, and (2) a very large tattoo called the Jerusalem Cross. “Deus volt,” admittedly, was a rallying cry for Christian crusaders in the 11th century. But ten centuries later I (an atheist) understand it’s just another Christian-related phrase.
So this was enough for Pete to be flagged as an “insider threat.” Apparently Christians aren’t welcome in the US Army. Is this partly why recruiters cannot meet their goals?
This is why people are concerned. In Hinduism, the right-facing symbol (clockwise) (卐) is called swastika, symbolizing surya ('sun'), prosperity and good luck. "NEW: Democrats are launching a private "military-grade intelligence-gathering operation" targeting major figures, including @ElonMusk and more.
"Democrats have a growing belief that their efforts must extend beyond the political sphere, trying to go on offense in a splintered media environment where conservatives have amassed more influence. One new liberal dark-money group began prospecting for donors with a pitch that it would unearth unflattering revelations about the Murdoch family and Elon Musk — both pro-Trump media magnates.
The group, called the Two Plus Two Coalition, plans to 'target the hidden sources of disinformation and expose them for what they are,' according to a donor prospectus being circulated this past week. The group asked donors for a minimum investment of $1 million, and was aiming for an annual budget of $10 million to $15 million.
The group’s senior adviser, Rick Wilson, a former Republican operative who was a co-founder of the Lincoln Project, said in an interview on Thursday that his organization would operate as an opposition research firm but with a military-grade intelligence-gathering operation that went far beyond the document vetting typical of a political campaign."
One can also be an idiot savant, and write novels people like, but otherwise be a complete clown with a nasty personality. Scalzi and Stephen King prove that.

And what that tells me is that their captive viewer base, who's been tuning in for years to all of this TDS, has now realized that they were deceived by MSNBC and they've lost credibility even with their most fervent supporters."
If someone puts swastika tattoos on their body, and says they did it because they believe in prosperity and good luck, I don't think we would believe them.
Then it's certainly a good thing that's not what he did, isn't it?
People who can't tell a swastika from a Jerusalem cross should probably refrain from commenting on it. Maybe spend more time studying pre-election polls out of Iowa.

Victor Davis Hanson @VDHanson Trump, His Disrupters, and a Chance to Return to Normalcy?
Many of Trump first-round picks share some common themes.
One, many, who were in the past victimized by government bullies and cowardly bureaucratic grandees, or proved sharp critics of the administrative state, are now, in karma-style, in charge of the very agencies that hounded him.
So, Elon Musk, perennial target of government regulatory functionaries, was once policed, but now he polices the bureaucratic police.
Robert Kennedy, Jr., proposed overseer of government health programs, was often blasted as a crank by the subsidized scientists and the administrators within HHS whom he will now direct.
Pete Hegseth fought the military DEI machinery while a solider in the ranks and wrote a book about the corruption of the Pentagon. He will now, if confirmed, run the Pentagon.
Tulsi Gabbard was improperly put on a national security travel watch list as a supposed security threat—and now will be a guardian of our security as Director of National Intelligence.
Tom Homan was derided by the Biden administration and its Homeland Security minions as a fanatic border hawk; now he will run ICE and deal with the detritus of Biden fanaticism on the border.
Two, none of these appointments are traditional swamp creatures. Few rotate from the think tanks. This time around there are no retired “Wise Men” or retired four-stars. Few are Uniparty magnificoes revolving back into high government from their DC university or New York corporate and investment waystations. None are DEI, cover-our-identity-politics-base candidates.
By design, their past government service resumes are thin—few past undersecretaries of these or special assistant to those. And there are not a lot of suffixed alphabetic letters or prefixed long-winded titles that adorn their names.
In other words, they are vaxed from the sort of acculturated administrative state mindset that has alienated and terrified the citizenry.
Three, they all share a reputation from the mainstream media, bicoastal elite, or administrative state guardians as a little “out there” or even “crazy” and “nuts”, whether RFK, Tulsi Gabbard, or Pete Hegseth. So, their opponents rightly fear they are immune from mainstream media disparagements, the usually leftwing generated hoaxes, and beltway tsk-tsk scorn.
Fourth and finally, they are not radicals or nihilists. Rather, they are reformers who are trying to trim or eliminate bloated government machinery, or return institutions and agencies to their normal functions and original missions. In contrast, the last few years of Biden governance chaos and near insurrection were abnormal—and dangerous.
Destroying the border and breaking the law to allow 12 million to enter illegally were nihilist.
Stealthily routing government cash, to circumvent the law, to a communist Chinese-run viral gain-of-function engineering lab is beyond the belief.
Creating a commissar system in the military that demanded ideological orthodoxy over meritocracy, or the Chairman of the JCS secretly communicating with his People’s Liberation Army counterpart to warn about his own commander-in-chief’s stability was insurrectionist.
Weaponizing the DOJ by performance-art swat home raids on opponents, and collusion lawfare waged by local, state, and federal indictments against a former president and presidential candidate were un-American.
Asymmetrical prosecutions and FBI fusion with social media to censor the news were sheer government anarchy.

Fox News @FoxNews · Follow 'BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS': Incoming Border Czar Tom Homan calls on pro-sanctuary city Democrats to listen to the 911 call 22-year-old Laken Riley made before prosecutors say she was killed by an illegal immigrant
I very much doubt whether Trump will deport millions of migrants, as he has promised to do; again, the Wall Street crowd will push back on the inflationary effects.
I’d put Musk up there as another financial risk factor. Tesla is on a tear because of Musk’s relationship with Trump. But at some point, the markets are going to realize that China can make its own electric vehicles for far less than Tesla
The biggest seismic shift in global industrial production ever is coming up with the relocation of the worldwide vehicle industry and its component parts to the Global South since the economics of scale favor locating future production across this region. China will catalyze the trend while possibly Germany, Japan, and Korea will move to adapt to it -- they have to salvage something from the paradigm shift. The US is going to protect itself into oblivion because it no longer does cost-effective, economy-to-scale manufacturing. If anything, the US needs to act to save as much of this production for Mexico if it can, not "renegotiate" NAFTA to further offshore production out of the hemisphere. Trump literally doesn't know what century he is in.
I'm not sure which is going to head for the sewer first -- Tesla stock or crypto. (Tesla will have some residual exit value.) But crypto is just another Florida land boom, a flowering of 21st century tulips.
The American government is broke, not the American private sector. The American government is also the fiduciary "owner" of the Big Banks and will get to clean this up as part of its overall debt-deficit-banks cleanup (and start fixing what Obama did not fix in the 2000s and FDR did do in the 1930s). Three Democratic losers in a row tells you something about the real value of the Obama legacy just as Trump is part of the price tag on the G.W. Bush presidency.
I'm staying "all in" on my American index funds because what 2008 proved and its stunning recovery showed was that there is no comparable private market-based sector like that of the US in the world. And yes, we will probably all be able to buy more of it cheap during the coming crisis-driven revaluation as we recapitalize yet another failed government. As always, plenty of work for the lawyers.
I haven't been in Germany for more than 10 years so I don't have anything to add to the discussion about their politics — but I can do arithmetic. As long as AfD and BSW combined are going to win 25-30% of the vote, Germany is condemned to eternal CDU-SPD coalitions with the only question being which party gets more votes and thus the Chancellor's seat.
Having the two major parties unable to have one in power and one in opposition indefinitely is corrosive to democracy. It's past time to think about how to respond to the AfD-BSW vote totals other than closing eyes and ears and just yelling No! Other European countries have managed to incorporate populist parties that focus on immigration into their legislature, often by accepting their support but not formally including them in the governing coalition.
I understand that AfD has more toxic positions that parties like the Sweden Democrats but rather than hoping the problem will go away, the main parties should work to bring them closer to the mainstream. One possible solution: a "supply and confidence" agreement between the CPD and AfD in the near future like the minority Canadian Liberals have with the farther left NPD? This may sound off the wall to German politicians and journalists but a continuation of the status quo just kicks the can down the road and guarantees that unhappy voters will continue to have no choice but to vote for parties that have no responsibility for governing.
LLR-democratical Rich was ALL OVER the European model and how amazing it was and was going to continue to be and how smart and clever and insightful they are.
But we all know what happens when our own Althouse blog "Reverse Cramer" stakes out a position on economics/trade/market...kaboom!
Look at the size of the debt pile. And then all the unrecorded over-obligations. Massive disappointment for sure.
We don't do revolutions in the US; we do recapitalizations. (That way the Little People get to pay twice; what's not to like!)
Recessions re-price the assets and liabilities of an economy and shift resources away from the "old" towards the "new." No president has ever been so much the face of the "old" as Trump.
The financial elite will do better than the MAGA zealots
It was only days ago LLR-democratical Rich was lying (surprise, no?) about the expected GDP growth in Argentina for 2025.
Rich was declaring expected Argentinian GDP growth to be a disaster...and then mere hours later JP Morgan announced their expectation for 8.5% growth for Argentina in 2025.

Not just for the eighth time - they've only ever had eight audits (the independent audit mandate came down in 2017).
Not going long on Germany, Rich?
Rich, 6 months ago you were extolling Germany as an economic powerhouse.
Poor, poor Abacus Boy Rich. Things just arent working out for him and his gaslighting.
Alas.
