"Of course, Harris might make a third bid for the White House, though her loss to Trump after raising over $1 billion will weigh heavily on many Democrats’ minds."

"On the flip side, Harris was within a few swing-state percentage points of the presidency after spending just over 100 days in the race and battling economic headwinds that have sunk parties in power around the world. Whether Harris is up to another campaign is a different question, a senior aide noted, and the answer will only come with time. 'We’re barely a week after the election,' the person said."

From "Democratic jockeying for the 2028 presidential election is already underway/Nearly two dozen Democrats are seen as possible contenders ahead of an invisible primary that will be shaped partly by Trump and his second term" (NBC News).

From this, I will avert my eyes.

Of course, she'll have to win an open primary next time. Something she's proven unable to do so far.

So we'll see Kamala drop out in December 2027 when she polls around 2%.

I highly doubt she'd get significant donor support for another run.

Wait a minute. I thought a Trump win means dictator for life and no more elections. You mean I have to do this voting thing again in 4 years? Democrats never keep their promises.

battling economic headwinds ooh, good point. She won't have to worry about that after four years of a Trump economy.

The next election will likely require voter ID and updated voter rolls.

Our new DOJ is also going to be taking a better look at some places in Maricopa County and Milwaukee and Philidelphia.

Have fun in the political wilderness Democrats.

Harris is politically dead for national office. She might be able to replace Newsom in California but even that is not probable. She is a terrible candidate for any office that requires voters.

Shoeless Joe said...

Kamala Harris was likely the worst presidential candidate in our nation's history. Under normal circumstances she'd now be the punchline to every political joke for the next decade, and an outcast from the world of politics. But for most Dems Harris is immune from the normal criticisms for the same reason she was their candidate in the first place -- her gender and skin color. So long as she wears that armor a significant portion of Democrats will see her as a viable candidate no matter how much of an empty suite she actually is. The left's inability to look past race and gender will continue to be their downfall.

How bad do you have to be when the president doesn't vote for you. If there is a national voter ID law in 2028 then the democrats are going to have a hard time fielding anybody. Right now if their lives depended on presenting their issues honestly thay'd all be dead.

I think AOC will run and I think she'll surprise people, get some stadium crowds and real energy from voters. She reminds me of Palin and Trump, somebody with strong charisma who makes emotional connections with people. She has a lot of haters which just adds to her popularity.

Newsom-AOC

And she might be at the top of the ticket.

She will do Joe Rogan, no problem. She's Bernie with boobs. She's already thrown all the trans babies out of the bus. "You know my pronouns!"

Harris is done with politics. It sounds like she has no more money left in her campaign funds and little chance of raising enough for another run. It was fun while it lasted, but she's over.

If past experience is relevant, AOC will be the new Bernie Sanders, supported by large elements of the Democrat base but feared by the party's leaders and donors. Or has the Democratic Party caught up with her?

Democrats are ready for another Carter or Clinton or Obama -- an obscure figure who captivates the national media and is pushed by the media to become the nominee and the new John F. Kennedy. Maybe it will be Wes Moore, governor of Maryland. Maybe it will be somebody else. Democrats are looking for someone who can be more of a pretty boy or girl than Gavin Newsom. It could be Josh Shapiro, but is the country ready for someone who used to work at the Israeli embassy in DC?

Using a billion dollars on an unworkable pipe dream is standard operating procedure for both Dems and Repubs, when the dollars are simply deficit spending of tax revenue, but not when the billion is donor money. Unless she can, for example, win a Nobel Peace Prize for settling the Iran/Israel war, or the Putin?Ukraine war, or at least the cartel war south of the border, she has a great future ahead of her on a few select Boards of Directors for groups where meeting attendance is optional.

Of course, she'll have to run in the primaries, because the Dems won't dare to anoint her again. The only way she'd have a chance is if the Dems pulled a Hillary, and got all the superdelegates on her side.

@Althpuse, I can’t blame you.

I’m also going to argue that Harris kept the loss down to 86 votes in the Electoral College because she had only 107 days to campaign. Like Hillary Clinton before her, the more the voters saw of her the less they liked her. A longer campaign would have meant more gaffes to hang around her neck.

How is it possible that we could finish election day evening without knowing which way it would end up, and then by the end of the week, the electoral count stood at 312 vs 226, with Trump carrying the popular vote by a clear margin? How is it that our electoral system is so unstable, so prone to argumentative mischief that has the power to swing an election into different result? The past 3 elections have been this way. I hope cleaning this up is a top priority. There's a pretty good short article on this by Doug Traux in RCP today

- Some aging Hollywood hippie who sell pot-infused gummies (Meathead? Woody Harrelson? Gavin Newsom is too much of a straight white male to win the nomination)
- Tim Walz, only accidentally, as he still thinks he's running for VP in 2024
- Madonna, as she still wants to burn down the White House
- Rachel Zegler, as she leverages the unreleased woke Snow White and Greta Thunberg crowd to gain the youth vote

Every so often, I feel compelled to trot out a link to one of my favorite political cartoons, which shows President George H.W. Bush declaring that the "Elite Democratic Guard is Completely Immobilized" at the peak of his Gulf War popularity, showing the likely Democratic presidential candidates to be thoroughly befuddled. It was less than two years before the 1992 election, and a certain obscure governor of Arkansas was not on the radar.

FWIW, I don't think that any of the governors mentioned in the current article about potential candidates for 2028 are likely to get the nomination, with the possible exception of Shapiro. I know a lot of people think Whitmer is strong, but I know some Michigan Democrat politicians, and their consensus is that she's, well, weird. (remember that whole "giving some kind of Dorito communion with lesbian overtones to a podcaster" thing?) If she runs, they expect her candidacy to dissolve like Harris' campaign.

My guess is that the 2028 Dem nominee will be someone who is not widely seen on the radar yet.

Out of the people mentioned in the article, I think that CT's Senator Chris Murphy is likely to run and may perform better than many would expect. I'll explain more if I see that he starts showing up in the public eye more often. Historically, he has kept such a low profile that I suspect most CT voters would struggle to remember his name, but I've had a feeling there was a highly calculated and ambitious purpose behind that.

Ist 2028 Pres guess - JD and Tulsi vs Gavin and Whitmer. JD wins all DJT 2024 states as well as MN, VA, NH, NM, NJ. In 2032 they become the first ticket to win all 50 states (lose DC, of course). Dems then help negotiate the purchase of Canada, Mexico, and Greenland in the hope to bring in more D leaning votes. Tulsi becomes president in 2036 winning all 62 states. Tulsi appoints JD as Chief Justice of the Supreme Coyrt, to replace Roberts. Sleep well! Cheers!
