"The planet is officially on alert for La Niña... scientists declared Thursday. It could have a cooling effect on the ongoing stretch of record global heat...."

"The climate pattern linked to cool Pacific Ocean conditions... can deliver drought conditions in some places and heavy snow in others.... But there is some uncertainty over how this episode of La Niña could play out because it arrives amid over a full year of record average global temperatures and unprecedented ocean surface warmth. Climate scientists will be paying close attention to whether La Niña’s typical global cooling influence plays out as usual.... 'It’s going to be interesting to see how this La Niña intersects with the generally very warm global oceans,' said Nathan Lenssen, a climate scientist at the University of Colorado. 'We’re in really uncharted territory, globally.'.... La Niña typically lasts nine to 12 months but can sometimes last three years...."

By the way, the term El Niño originated as a reference to baby Jesus, after fishermen noticed warm water at Christmastime. La Niña doesn't refer to anyone in particular. It's just the opposite of El Niño.

Expect to be instructed time and again that the cooler weather should not be viewed as an easing up of global warming.

I'm glad we've got that settled. After all, 97% of scientists agree on this, or so I'm told. By John Kerry. And he knows.

Do not view La Nina as an easing of global warming, but also do not view every single hurricane and hot spell as evidence of global warming. This is often just random weather.

The politicians (post-Al Gore) screwed up the global warming hypothesis for political gain. Human emissions occur in context a whole bunch of other non-human climate factors. Multi-factor nuanced analyses are desired unless they interfere with a well-funded policy agenda.

As far as I can tell, a warm center gives you a low at that point, and a cool center gives you a high at that point. Lows and highs repel each other (bounce off each other), so form a fairly regular alternating pattern, with an average sort of spacing.

So the one puts an average low off the California coast, and the other puts a high off the California coast, and that sets up opposite weather patterns across the nation, on the average.

Nothing to do with global warming.

Also that they steadfastly avoid talking about the ice-free majority of the earth's history, and about the horrible effects of returning the developing world to wood and dung fires, since the Prime Directive is to eliminate the use of fossil fuels - even though that Prime Directive would not only condemn the poor to much deeper poverty but would also have negative effects on air pollution, proximally, and climate change, by their own models.

@baghdadbob, Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, which had an underwater caldera, is believed to have injected 146 million tons of water vapor more than 30 miles into the air, directly into the stratosphere. This is believed to have increased the total atmospheric water vapor by somewhere between 10% to 15%. Given that water vapor is a much stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, we should expect that global temperatures will be warmer than usual, and for some number of years. Eventually the water vapor will be returned to the earth’s surface as rain (or snow) but given that so much of the vapor is so high up in the stratosphere, I’m not aware of any good mathematical models for how long that will take. Perhaps MadisonMan can weigh in.

Surprising probably no one, variables affecting the amount of sun energy received, and where (Sunspot cycle, Earth’s distance from the sun, Earth’s tilt and wobble, etc) predominated. Interestingly though, the factor that was also in the top 5 was the El Niño/La Niña cycle. What was not in the top 5 was CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, and indeed, the statistical error with these top 5 factors swamp the potential effects of CO2.

“There is a sound factual basis for global warming. But the issue has been so politicized that it is nearly impossible to have a calm discussion. Bjorn Lonborg and Steve Koonin are especially informative.”

Yes, but it isn’t CO2 in the atmosphere. The basic problem with the CO2 theory is that it is based on the scientific reality that in a small closed system, CO2 concentration does affect the temperature of the whole system. But the reality is far more complex. What most of the CO2 based models fail to do is to inadequately take into account the positive, and esp negative, feedbacks involved. They become ever more complex as they try to model the feedback, but continue to fail, and the failure is consistently in one direction, because of the mistaken belief that CO2 is a significant driver of global temperatures.

The CO2 theory is based on models, which don’t work all that well. The models tend to run hot, because they underestimate the amount of negative feedback in the system. AGW really got going when a bunch of tree ring counters, using highly inaccurate proxy data, kinda found some weak correlation. Controlling the peer review process, they were able to control the debate for awhile, getting UN approval, because their theory seemingly incriminated First World countries, and 2nd and esp 3rd World countries control much of the UN, including the IPCC. Then, the grifters, such as AlGore, jumped in. By now, too many $billions$ have been siphoned off by the grifters, that there doesn’t seem much chance at seriously investigating whether CO2 poses a threat to the climate at all. And under FJB and the Dems, it just turned our economy into a piggy back for those capitalizing on the panic they help maintain.

p.s. Didja notice how they threw in a comment about unprecedented warm ocean waters, which they imply are linked to CO2 concentrations, but then spoke of La Nina-induced cooler water?

Well, it should be obvious that El Nino itself produces the warmer water.

El Nino - La Nina currents are created by natural forces (trade winds, deep currents off South Ameriaca) acting on massive amounts of water. These forces dwarf any human contribution to ocean temperatures.

What's more, infrared from CO2 can penetrate only a couple of MICRONS into the oceans' surface, while the Sun's radiation goes a bit deeper, up to a few centimeters. Then there's the effect of underwater volcanoes and fumaroles.

Compared to all these warming sources, CO2's contribution is exceedingly small.
