"I only got married because I was 37 years old … and people would think I was queer if I weren’t married."

Said JFK, according to a woman who worked with him during his Senate years, quoted in the first paragraph of "Tim Scott has a woman problem/Like nagging parents, some Republicans want to know why the presidential candidate has never been married" (Boston Globe).
[Tim Scott] has never been married. There is no indication that he has plans to get married. And that’s a problem for some Republicans who, like nagging parents, want to know why Scott, 57, is unmarried.
That article was published a week ago. I ran across it this morning after doing a search prompted by this headline in today's Washington Post: "Tim Scott’s girlfriend/The unmarried Republican presidential candidate doesn’t like talking about his new relationship very much. But he is talking about it."
“He has staked so much on his personal story, character and faith,” said the operative, who spoke to me on the condition of anonymity because, well, that’s how people kick dirt around in this business. “He’s running as America’s pastor, so to speak, as he courts evangelicals in Iowa, and I think a lot of folks may wonder about his lack of a family.”
"The operative" = an unnamed person working for one of the other Republican candidates.

The "I" is Ben Terris, who bemoans the "retrograde" insinuation that that Scott is gay and observes that this would be unacceptable to the GOP's "stubbornly homophobic factions." Terris says he's not "interested in laundering innuendos" for whoever that operative is working for. And Terris proceeds to deny that he's dealing in an insinuation that Scott is gay. Here's his cleverly penned parenthetical:
(Despite the retrograde assumptions people still like to make about wifeless men of a certain age, there really is nothing to suggest that Scott is anything other than a confirmed bachelor in the most literal sense of the phrase.)

Huh? The old-fashioned phrase "confirmed bachelor" has always insinuated that a man is gay. It doesn't exist as a phrase in a "literal sense." If you say "confirmed bachelor," you're using a euphemism for gay. Terris (and his editors) must know very well what they are doing and why they need to deny it.

Now, this denial is very important, because it's a long article, and Terris needs to justify his nosing around. Because who cares if someone is gay... or asexual... or committed to celibacy... or dedicated to a long-lost love or... anything else? And who's dumb enough to believe that because somebody got himself married, he's respectable and responsible?

A few weeks ago, Axios reported that Scott’s privacy about his personal life was an issue with conservative donors who might otherwise consider backing his candidacy. “The joke has always been that he is secretly gay or something,” the unnamed operative told me. “I don’t really buy that. But he’s got an interesting history.” The dossier he’d sent included details about Scott having owned property and shared a jet ski with male friends....

How about researching and naming the clowns who think it's a joke if someone is gay? But no, Terris has locked onto this story and is, in fact, laundering it for a Scott opponent.

Six [of Scott's] friends I spoke with said they didn’t know about a woman in his life. Others never returned my calls. The campaign, of course, was well aware that I was trying to get to the bottom of Scott’s love life. They were polite, but not exactly eager to spill....

[T]wo weeks ago, I flew to South Carolina to ask a 57-year-old presidential candidate whether he had a girlfriend....

Scott responded with a story about a woman whose photo he'd been shown. He "prayed on it," then got her number and called her....

They started talking, hitting it off with discussions about God and using a phone app to do a Bible study together. Scott said he loved her laugh.... He wouldn’t tell me her name, and the campaign declined to make her available to chat, even off the record....

Presumably, he has a woman friend, which is nice, but that doesn't add anything to what we already knew and does nothing to answer the question Is Scott gay?

If he is gay, I wish he'd been open about it all along, but what can he do now? We're talking about a 57-year-old man who's promoted traditional sexual morality, not a younger man, like Pete Buttigieg, who is married and ostensibly monogamous.

Kind of amusing because JFK came across as anything but homosexual.

And yes, it is often pretty easy to tell, often times because gays, then and now, want to 'signal' their preferences.

Scott on the other hand, does not have JFK's hetero aura for want of a better word.

It doesn't mean he's gay, it just means he's less obviously not gay...

I never thought about Tim Scott's bachelorhood. I'm not inclined to vote for him because of policy reasons, but it would be kind of fun to have no First Lady and the gameplaying that goes with the position.

Correction: The "I" is the operative, not Ben Terris. It's a continuation of the quote from the unnamed operative.

Also, maybe this is a generational thing, but I had no idea that "confirmed bachelor" was code for "gay". As a genXer, the code for "gay" is "gay." When I read "confirmed bachelor" I think of the older guys I know who have gone through a lot of girlfriends but can never commit. The girlfriends eventually leave, much like the ones mentioned by the Tim Scott friends/staffers in the article. The guys probably have issues with attachment/communication and probably just end up pushing the women away.

I am also a never-married 57 year man, so I am sympathetic to Scott's dilemma. However, I never cared what conclusions people draw from my marital status. Were I a politician, I would actually much rather be a Republican one than Democrat on this dimension alone. My observation is that it actually is easier to be a gay Republican than a Democrat one- political opponents and voters in Republican primaries are less likely to give a shit who the candidate sleeps with as long as it isn't a child or teenager. Democrats on the other hand like to use such proclivities as both cudgels and promotors- truly schizophrenic behavior.

I heard a stand-up comic about my age say, "It's kind of like when I was in school, and I waited until the last minute to turn my assignment in."

Some of us procrastinate!

When I was in church, one of my buddies asked me over breakfast, "Are you married?"

And I got defensive! "No," I said. "And my brother's not married, either."

I thought it was some judgmental church thing. But it's really just an innocent question!

Church is filled with married people. Church is also filled with happy married people. "Marriage" is just a man and a woman being willing to say in public "I love you," and announcing to the community that the fucking will begin soon. (Some of us jump the gun).

It's worldly secular people who have turned marriage into an economic arrangement. Beware the worship of money and be not afraid to confess your love. I paraphrase Christ.

That's no reason, however, to jump to the conclusion that Uncle Joe sometimes goes a bit too far when petting his dogs. That rumor is absolutely baseless. I would like to see some interviews with vets detailing how baseless these rumors are. Put those interviews on the front page of the NYT and the evening news so we can finally put on an end to those nasty rumors. There is no substantial evidence that President Biden has ever sexually molested his dogs. He is a true dog lover. Perhaps at a press conference, some reporter can bring the subject up and we can get his denial on the record.

Obviously some Democrats are trying to destroy Scott's reputation. (See also Lindsay Graham). South Carolina has two men, both single, representing the state, and all Democrats can do is jeer and try to scare people into fleeing from them.

"They're gay! They're gay! Run away!"

So strange (ha) that the people of South Carolina don't give a shit what Yankee media has to say about anything.

I had one lady try to sell me a NYT subscription 20 years ago. "I live in Raleigh," I said, amused. She got mad at me and lectured me and blah blah blah. "We cover the world!"

If you want to see the NYT get the shit ripped out of them by Hollywood, watch The Paper, which is awesome.

Truth matters!

Anyway, you liberals can't teach us to be less homophobic and then scare us by accusing random single men of being gay. Cause many of us go to church and we hear about this thing called hypocrisy.

But go and demonize Tim Scott, it's not like people pay attention to what you do or say. And I really wish you would quit castrating our boys and giving steroids to our girls. Thanks, Boston.

(I heard Ted Kennedy killed a woman and his drunk DWI ass ran away from the crime scene, and he didn't spend a day in jail. Maybe one of you "reporters" could fact-check that shit).

"Confirmed bachelor" was code in my day and place. Mention of "confirmed bacehlorS" left no doubt, like the unambiguous "longtime companion." "Sidekicks, "pals," and "buddies" didn't have the insinuations.

My older brother was about 45 when he married a neighbor of my mother's, a few years his senior. He made sure that his three younger brothers knew it was for her money, and easy sex. He certainly ran through her money.

I got married at 24 and have been ever since. My two younger brothers never married--in fact barely dated. They hung out with friends and their girlfriends and wives and ex-wives and may have hooked up, but I don't really know.

My son is 37 and still a bachelor.

Temujin said...

I was 60 when I first got married. 60. But I was 50 when I was first dating my wife. We lived together for years before we even decided to get married. But I remember my wife's sister asking her when we were first dating, what was wrong with me, being 50 and never being married. And I'm sure a part of my family (not immediate, but distant relatives) had thoughts that I was gay. I heard mutterings. Whatever.

I had many relationships over the years, had lived with women previously for long periods, but just...never...got...married. It's not for everyone. I worked A LOT and traveled A LOT for work. I would not have been home much anyway.
And virtually everyone else I knew who had been married- every one of them but one couple, has been divorced- at least once. In some cases, multiple times. My life was much less complicated than theirs.

Tim Scott's life is his own and he needs to answer to no one about it. If they choose to not vote for him because they're not sure about a guy who's not been married at 57, so be it. That would not even appear on my radar of prime considerations for President. Or Senator. But there's no accounting for judgement in this country. I mean, here's a different Senator who serves in the same chambers as Sen. Scott. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you, Sen. John Fetterman of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Our Senate. Stick around to the end of it for a winning shot at this Senator in shorts! Class all the way.

Tim Scott seems to be a good man. As such, the opposition will need to come up with things to knock him down. That he's never been married feels like a massive reach to me.

Most of the confirmed bachelors I have known were in that vein.

My brother waited until 44 to get married- he always thought if he married he's turn out like our father. 3 wives, 2 divorces. Likely only because he didn't live long enough for a third... He also left us with what is currently a mystery half-sister. DNA and internet searches have shown that much- but haven't been enough to identify her...

There are lots of reasons to stay single. Job may not be conducive to marriage. Self doubts about one's fitness for marriage. Psychological problems. Others you can probably imagine. And then- a homosexual bent. From which comes the term "Beard". Michelle's role according to many. Those that don't think she's really a he... Internet rumors are their pastor was good at setting men up with beards...

This is from a recent Pew report

Now, if you've never married by age 40, you only have a 25% probability of marrying before age 65. So Scott is more the norm than those hung up on the anomaly of the mid 20th century of most married, etc.

Tim Scott is one of a number of Republicans (Chris Sununu and Glenn Youngkin are two others) who would make strong general election candidates but Trump only needs about 28-30% support amongst the GOP base to win every primary. He has enough die hard supporters to get that in a crowded field. You could have 70% of GOP voters who cast a primary ballot for someone other than Trump but it won't matter. The only way he could lose the nomination would be in a one on one contest. Maybe Scott or Sununu could beat him one on one but with the anti Trump vote divided amongst 7-8 candidates, Trump will cruise through and get crushed in the general.

Oooh- you cruelly just ruined my vision of Camelot!!! And here for all these years I thought JFK married Jackie because he loved her deeply and knew she was the only one.

Just like Jackie later married Aristotle Onassis, her own true love. Aristotle's tremendous wealth and constant publicity in the tabloids had nothing to do with it, of course.

Dude, you get the win in the comments section tonight---

I didn’t know Tim Scott was 57. He looks younger than that.

Confirmed Bachelor is an old-fashioned term that I only came across in reading an article about Cesar Romero.

Unlike Lindsay Graham, Scott is outwardly religious. I don’t know if he’s a celibate gay or straight or even celibate. Graham is a confirmed bachelor. Lot of Republicans are nowadays.

Be interesting if voters held it against Scott for not being married, gay or straight.

Michael,

she's kinda racist

you missed my point

(her vote is up for grabs, I think, because she identifies via race, not via party)

my experience with black people who don't have a media platform is that they are way nicer and happier towards me

the South is filled with multiple races and we do just fine, thanks

older people calming down the hotheads is a thing down here

it's like my life story!

For several years Booker was in a relationship with Rosario (VA-Va-Voom) Dawson! Any persistent whispering given that history is just the griping of envious losers.

Hahahhahahahha....you actually BELIEVED that?? I have a bridge to sell you.

I'm at a loss to remember when a Black person was ever on the Republican ticket. Though Paul Ryan did tan pretty good in the summer months

Larry Elder...you know, the guy who the left call the black face of White Supremacy??

See also Al Sharpton having fun with Donald Trump back in the day. The Donald invited Al to go up on the Republican primary stage with him.

(I feel like Trump doesn't have a lot of friends, just the way it seems from afar).

My guess is, Al said no because it was off his brand ("I hate honkies") and too honest ("I like money").

Trump cried in his diary at the loss. "I guess I'll have to find some Republican friends."

The dumbest lawyer on earth demands to know who Tim Scott is dating, because she thinks it may be a lunatic like her!!!

I really have no idea what you're going on about. I wasn't trying to refute anyone's statement. I was making conversation, if that's a concept you can comprehend.

We used to get calls from our son’s first grade teacher that he was hiding books on his lap and reading for his own enjoyment instead of doing assigned work. He seemed to not be challenged by finding the missing letter in “m_p”. Next to a picture of a mop.

Yeah. I know the feeling. My mom taught me the alphabet at age 3 and I was reading books - real books, like those written for 3rd or 4th grade kids - by the time I turned 5. In kindergarten it didn't really matter, because they were not teaching reading at all in those days, but when I got to first grade and had to plod through the very basic books about Dick and Jane and "See Spot run", I was bored stiff and misbehaved as a result. Luckily the teacher was a real professional, whom I still see now and then around town in her retirement, and she was able to give me enough of an individualized challenge that I was skipped over 2nd grade and into 3rd.

When my kids were the same age, we did likewise. They didn't pick it up quite as quickly as I did, but they were definitely reading at a first or second grade level by the time they got to kindergarten, which nowadays IS where they begin to learn reading. Their dreadful teachers were very brittle and indignant by comparison to my lovely teacher, admonishing us for undercutting their professional instructional techniques with those horrible right-wing phonics, and it wasn't fair to the other kids, and blah blah blah, you know exactly the type of purple haired cat lady I'm talking about, right?... I laughed in their faces and put the kids in a parochial elementary school for first grade onwards. That went better.

This all seems like it belongs in the other thread about Mississippi.
