This is the incident we discussed here 2 days ago, in "The joy that Black people across the country are feeling over the Montgomery Riverfront Uprising, aka the Alabama Sweet Tea Party, is filling my soul."
The better term for what happened, rather than "self-defense," is "defense of others." One man was attacked by a few men and badly outnumbered, and those men, in turn, were badly outnumbered by a much larger group that came in on the side of the one man. It got chaotic, and what happened seems to have gone well beyond what was needed to rescue that man. As a viewer of the viral video, you may find yourself enjoying that extra dose of payback.
ADDED: As I said in the comments to the 2-day-old post: "It really is an example of 'try that in a small town.'" I hope Charles Blow and others who are finding some form of joy in that video take a new look at what Jason Aldean was singing about.

People fighting with each other is a turn on for most of the effete. Even more so when it’s racially turbocharged.
“Blow blows” is both a factual statement and commentary on Chuck’s journalistic abilities.
I've watched a few different camera angles of the brawl, and aside from the very start of it, it's not easy to figure out just what in the hell is going on. It looks like a bunch of drunk assholes. It is nice to hear support for self defense from unexpected quarters though. I wonder if that will prove short term and self-serving?
How the worm turns. Now the left starts to accept self-defense? This must be an unintended consequence of defunding the police and the simultaneous interest of urban people (e.g., black women) in buying guns.
The absurd indictment and trial of Kyle Rittenhouse -- a white guy who retreated from white attackers -- may have contributed to this shift too.
What's next? Will Biden offer tax credits to low-income buyers of guns? Do the Democrats demand "gun equity" now?

It's just a stupid brawl. It isn't a civil rights moment, which is the narrative they need to push.
And if the races were reversed — two young black men attacking an older, white, physically out of shape security guard just doing his job — would the New York Times- still celebrate a large number of strong white men coming to his assistance? Would Charles Blow celebrate it? Would you blog about it even once, much less twice?

Second - the shirtless white man who threw the first punch is a dumb punk ass. At least that is my opinion based on the video footage. Looks like an Unfair and unhinged attack.

Though there are the >400K black-on-white assaults every year, more than a thousand to fill every newsfeed, every newspaper front page, every day, if anyone cared to keep track.
Ok but let's take a hypothetical example of say, a white woman is being attacked by a black man.
Is it bad if white men then attack the black man? How many white men attacking the black man is too many? Is it so bad that we should be reminded how bad it is decades even centuries later?
What if other white people, who were no where near the incident, celebrated it and considered it as a positive sense of ingroup racial identity? What then?
They can’t afford to lose 1 percent more of the black vote, so in an election season they need to feed the appetite for racially charged ‘victories’. Soon we’ll see more of this mixed with making subtle and not so subtle ties to Joe Biden et al…

I for one am glad that others came to the aid of someone being ganged up on: and would feel the same if it were Sikhs (with sticks) coming to the aid of a Korean grocer -- or a white boat captain.

I had to look this brawl up on youtube. There are different vantage points. It looks like there is more brawl later after the boat docks.

Huh? Montgomery, Alabama, has a population of 200,000, give or take. It is by no means a small town.
There were two salient features of this fight. Just sayin...
The drunk white asshole who started the whole thing with his fists - and certainly belongs in jail.
The large black asshole who gratuitously, forcefully and therefore very dangerously hit the white woman in red dress (who was clearly trying to break it up) over the head with a chair - and certainly belongs in prison for some time.
BFD. The flabby, stupid white guys and women change the mix. Otherwise we've seen dozens, maybe hundreds, of videos of young black men and women piling on each other, teachers, old asians and jews, young whites, etc.
Blow is only excited because this is the first one we've seen where blacks were defending a third person, regardless of color; where their violence was justified.

I find some of the responses to this naive at best, and stupidly blinkered at worst. The MSM and Left is celebtrating this because its blacks coming to the defense of another black against whites.
That's it.
If tommorrow a bunch of whites did the same thing, there would be hate charges up the wazoo and the MSM and the Left would be talking about "Lynch mobs" and "racist trump supporters attacking poor black men".
The Left, most minority groups, and the MSM think of crime and violence in terms of WHO is the victim. When there's inter-racial violence, blacks can be victims. Whites can't be. Asians/Hispanics might be victims if attacked by Whites. Not by blacks.

Underneath it all, and this may be somewhat covered up by their election fraud, the Dems really are losing blacks, and esp black men.
Why do I say this? One example - We are staying long term at a Trump property to address my partner’s health issues. Trump loves gold. So apparently do a lot of Blacks. Always a lot of bling. The place appears very popular with Blacks. There was a function here a couple weeks ago, where the guys were in tuxes, and the women in gowns. More surprising though, are the number of them who comment on liking my Trump hat (they could buy one, like I did in the gift shop, but rarely seem to). And the Blacks working there love him. They are part of his family. Very loyal.
I've learned how little videos often tell an accurate story, but from what I can tell:
1. A black security guard and white teenager were attacked by a group of possibly drinking/drunk white guys.
2. The black security guard in particular was "rescued" by a group of observing black men and some black women too.
3. This degraded into a more general brawl with many more people getting involved.
4. Later in videos, we see at least one black man indiscriminately slamming a chair into multiple white people, including after he turned around and saw a white woman sitting on the ground already dazed - then proceeded to slam a chair into her.
5. In other parts of the video, black women appear to be kicking white people on the ground.
The video appears depict a good thing - bystanders coming to the aid of an attacked security guard - that then devolves into a terrible thing: Indiscriminate attacks on the basis of skin color.
The police - both white and black - appeared to comport themselves wonderfully in quickly bringing order.
It disturbs me greatly that there are significant volumes of people thinking this is a watershed moment on video. I see the initial cause of celebration, I get it, but after that it becomes pretty awful. What may have started as a "rush to defend" became a ready excuse for broad assault on people on the basis of their presence and skin color. Again, as far as I can see from the ~3 videos I've watched.
Still waiting for the feminists to chime in about the dude hitting a woman with a chair. There is no clearer demonstration of their patriarchy ideology than a dude taking it to a chick with the furniture.

The voting record of one of the three stressed men has been reviewed. Not surprisingly, he has voted Democrat.

Authorities said that they had consulted with the FBI and would not be able to charge the White men with a hate crime or with inciting a riot.
Any attack on a black/minority by any white man is a possible hate crime, and we must bring in America's Gestapo for "consultation".

When Blacks start defending their neighborhoods from rampaging mobs, a la the Rooftop Koreans of 1992's LA riots, we will know that a Black Renaissance has started in America.
As a legal proposition, the right to come to someone else's defense is pretty limited, and stops at the point when you and/or the person whose defense you came to is no longer in danger of immediate harm.
There are only a couple of people in the video who may appropriately claim that defense to criminal charges of assault and battery, etc.
