"The joy that Black people across the country are feeling over the Montgomery Riverfront Uprising, aka the Alabama Sweet Tea Party, is filling my soul."

Writes Touré, in "Why the Montgomery Riverfront Uprising is making Black people so damn happy" (the Grio).
In these videos, we see Black people having one another’s backs. We see brotherhood and sisterhood. We see the vibe of “No, y’all ain’t piling on my brother. We fight back.” Black people showed up in droves to defend our brother....
Joy Reid texted me this earlier today.... "Seeing Black folk come as a community to that security guard’s rescue, one guy even swimming over like Aquaman to help him, was a ‘Wakanda Assemble’ moment, in which a group of old school southern bullies effed around and found out. There’s something deeply satisfying about that for a lot of people.” Amen.
[I]n a world where we’re supposedly unable to swim, there’s a 16-year-old brother swimming in to join the fight. Some have nicknamed him AquaMayne. Some have called him Jermichael Phelps or Michael B. Phelps or Dark Spitz (like Mark Spitz, who won Olympic Gold in the ’70s)....

ADDED: I can see from the comments that people need to be pointed toward more context. Try "Montgomery police issue warrants after massive brawl on Alabama riverfront dock" (CNN).

Normally, these crime videos show (1) a black mob or black crook beating up someone or (2) a white or asian person or policeman trying to rescue/arrest someone being harrassed or assaulted by a someone (usually black).

This shows blacks and whites fighting over something for some reason. And so its man bites dog. Amazed it didn't get more coverage.

Reverse the races and the article never sees print. According to FBI crime statistics, is it more likely that a White person will attack a Black person, or a Black person will attack a White person in 21st century America?

If it's ok to refer to White men as "White boys" can I refer to Black men as "Black boys"? Asking for a friend.

Looking forward to the report of a bunch of Asians going all Bruce Lee on the next darky that whomps an old Asian lady. But I am guessing that won’t result in a celebration in the press

I bet there was almost as much joy as when Damian Williams threw a brick at Reginald Denny's head after a bunch of other Black thugs pulled him out of his truck and beat him senseless.

Well, there you go. No more talk of reparations or affirmative action or any of that other CRT crap anymore, right? We're even now, right? Are you here for it? I know I am.

Couple of thoughts

Vigilantism is now a good thing?

Coming to the aid of a person is a simple human reaction. Making it about skin color says all I need to know about those that chose to opine.

This coming together to protect their fellows might be a good trait for inner city neighbor hoods to take up. But for a reason that has always befuddled me, they fold like a house of cards.

Saint Croix said...

That's fucked up.

I hate seeing racial riots, racial fighting. I always hope that it's not racist.

Bizarre to describe a crime as joyful or happy, to see brothers (in the Christian sense, spiritual brothers) fighting each other. I don't know who you are, Toure, but get thee to church, brother, and free your mind of your racist shackles.

is Montgomery a small town?

SweatBee said...

The report I read said, "The victims include Pickett, who is a Black male, and a 16-year-old White male employee of the smaller vessel which brought Pickett to the pier." Also that the police are interested in an "interview" with the chair-wielding black man seen in the videos.

So a group of people engaged a black man and a white teen in a brawl, but of course the usual suspects erase the white teenager whose existence is inconvenient to their narrative.

I saw snatches of video, and I couldn't figure out what was happening. Can someone explain? If racial conflict makes people happy, look for more of it.

Hassayamper said...

I am, to put it mildly, opposed to the agenda of BLM and other black radicals, and highly critical of the thoughtless and casual violence of modern black culture.

That said, this appears to be an entirely justified episode of community self-defense. A black security guard ordered some drunken white men on a boat to dock elsewhere, so that a commercial vessel of much larger size could dock in its reserved place on the jetty. A group of these men, at least four or five in number, instead violently assaulted the security guard without any apparent justification. Other gentlemen of African ancestry saw one of their number being pummeled by a mob, and responded appropriately.

If the races were reversed, I would be applauding their bravery and willingness to have a go at evildoers in their midst. I can do no less if the evildoers were of the same race as my own.

I only wish that our guys would respond in the same fashion to any of the distressingly common instances of black mobs attacking outnumbered whites without any provocation, and that the Soros DAs would prosecute the assailant mob rather than the victims of the mob or the bystanders who volunteered to put an end to the violence.

Ann Althouse said...

Sorry if you couldn't understand the context from what I gave you. I'll put up an additional link.

What you need to know is that the black man you see at the beginning was doing his job, and the white men didn't want to move their boat and ganged up on him, physically attacking him. That goes on for a while before many black men come to his rescue.

Ann Althouse said...

It really is an example of "try that in a small town."

Breezy said...

This seems to be a fake racial controversy. The issue is a conflict of drunk white people not following boat rules and being chastised by a security guy who happens to be black, doing his job. Why is this racial vs idiocy? It’s not black and white to me.

Saint Croix said...

I'll bet there will be no charge of hate crime

because there will be no proof of racism

I would be surprised if racist words were yelled

possible, I guess, but unlikely

I don't care enough to check

Sean said...

As I understand it, the black guy is asking the white boaters to move their boat so the riverboat can dock safely. The boaters go bonkers over this and start a fight. The resulting melee is not surprising. Blaquaman joining in was pretty funny. Oh, and the hat toss in the beginning.

I do feel bad for the woman at the end who was hit by the chair. That was excessive. The other chair smackings were spot on.

when I was in fifth grade, when we played football we did shirts and skins (you take off your shirt, so you can tell whose on which team).

our teacher made us stop doing that, because there was some rule about kids not taking their shirts off at school

and we didn't have uniforms

so how do we divide up into teams?

somebody (might have been me!) suggested that we divide up racially, so the black guys played the white guys

I was always on the winning team!

The black guys only had one athlete, Willy, and the other two guys on his team sucked marbles

We played tackle and it was fun.

After a while of blacks vs whites, our teacher noticed that shit and desegregated us.

He was a black guy.

We weren't hating on each other, we were children, but he was right, and that was a lesson that stuck with me

The original victim may have been the only person involved who wasn’t drunk. He was the Co-Captain of the River boat — not a dock worker or security guard. One suspects that by 7:00 p.m. all the people on a pontoon boat and most on the river boat were hammered.
Nevertheless it’s an uprising that fills my heart with joy.

And then another unrelated gang of black men assault the white men and a woman, according to the reporting, more brutally.

Touree making this explicitly about race, and the behavior of the second group of black men, should see him charged with hate crime for racial provocation of violence and them charged with hate crime assault. That's the way the law is written and supposed to be enforced -- in small towns too. The fact that we all know it isn't glee in this distasteful, especially considering the statistically far greater numbers, only further exacerbated by population size, of black on white crime. And the numbers for interracial black on white sex crime is even worse. You erase the white victim of the drunk men. Why?

What Touree is advocating for is an annual recreation of a symbolic lynching scene.

From the Grio article...
"After white people tried to impose their white supremacy on a Black dock worker, an overwhelming number of Black people showed up to pound some fear into them wypipo. I will never forget the photo of five brothers on the dock closing in on two white boys like, “What’s up now?” My colleague Michael Harriot texted me this morning, “It‘s a rare explicit example of justice.” The explicit and immediate and overwhelming sense of justice is something we’re not used to seeing so when we do see it, it’s thrilling. "

Those uppity palloreds need to know their place; lynch mobs are making a comeback now.

Note: I'm criticizing Toure's racist response to the actions in the video, not the actions themselves. As Ann noted, it really is an example of 'try that in a small town.'"

Gahrie, I had to evacuate clients attending a maternal poverty clinic nearby those riots where black thugs were beating Reginald Denny's head in, and my co-worker, a Vietnamese re-education (torture) camp survivor, was pelted with bricks and barely escaped with his life that day a few blocks away. Yes, the thugs were laughing and having fun.

We were downtown doing social work for poor communities. Nobody was adequately punished. That's how they do it in Atlanta, day in and day out. Must be nice to live someplace where this doesn't affect you, but people wealthy enough to live in such places should at least try to learn the truth from people who do. The Post shows the whole video, including the white youth trying to rescue his co-worker, and the extreme brutality visited on all white people present, not all evidently involved in the fight, even after cops tried to calm the crowd.

If the riverboat was indeed waiting “30 to 45 minutes” for small boat to move, as one witness stated, they must have tried to call the police. It would be really strange if they didn’t. If so, police didn’t respond, as so often happens. So after a long wait for police, river boat crew might have decided to solve the problem by themselves… That would explain all the ass-covering talk from police officer afterwards.

The race-baiters are not going to be able to make anything out of this, because 99.6 percent of all observers of the video of all races will agree that all involved should have stopped and then proceeded to join together to give the big white drunk who started it all the beatdown he deserved.

I may reconsider if some politically ambitious prosecutor seeks to overcharge the stupid drunk on "hate crime" grounds.

This is just the IHOP video in a slightly different context.

Candide said...

May be the small boat was broken and couldn't move out of the way of the big boat?

During the first fight, at some point a white woman comes, pushes the white man that started the fight to the ground and punches him a few times, then camera moves and we see some black man on top of the black man from the big boat, holding him to the ground. So it was quite messy...

Then the group of white people from the small boat go back to their boat and just sit there. Maybe their boat was broken and they couldn't move? Or they were waiting for the police to make their statement, not "to flee the scene"? Then a different mob arrives and fighting resumes. Finally, police arrives and start making arrests...

Last week in St. Paul, a 14-year-old black youth shot and killed his 12-year-old brother. It is believed to be an accident and it very likely was. But here's the thing. The gun belonged to another family member who brought it into the house. And what is the family doing? They are going on TV and saying that they hope this family member does the right thing and turns himself in. What are they not doing? Telling the cops -- or anyone else for that matter -- what the guy's name is.

Because, don't be snitchin'.

He was entirely in the right, up until the moment he started untying someone else's boat himself. That's sort of like you find someone else's car idling in your parking spot, so you put it in gear. I have to say, I don't know why he didn't pull up to the ample space right behind the pontoon boat and discharge his passengers.
