Was Trump's use of the word "riggers" a veiled racial slur?

I'm reading "Trump prosecutor Fani Willis faces racist abuse after indicting ex-US president/Georgia prosecutor subjected to flurry of threats after Trump makes thinly veiled reference to N-word after latest charges" (The Guardian).

Right after Willis announced the indictments, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "They never went after those that Rigged the Election. They only went after those that fought to find the RIGGERS!"

The Guardian notes: "Willis is African American. So too are the two New York-based prosecutors who have investigated Trump, the Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg who indicted him in April over alleged hush-money payments, and Letitia James, the state attorney general who is investigating Trump’s financial records."

How can one ever know? "Rig" has been such a common word in this years-long controversy. But I'd never noticed the use of the word "rigger" before. In my entire 20-year archive, the word "rigger" has never appeared — not in my writing and not in anything I've quoted. It's an unusual, unnecessary word. I'd avoid it.

But let me go back to something I wrote about 2 days ago, in a post called "Unique difficulties," which observed that the "experts" seem troubled that federal prosecutors are not controlling all of the prosecuting of Trump. They are expressing unease about the prosecution that is controlled by black people — Willis, Bragg, and James. I asked my question — a question that aims at covert racism — How do I know you're not racist?

I got a lot of pushback in the comments, as if it was unfair of me even to ask that question about the elite experts who are worrying about the state-level prosecutors. But look at how readily Trump is suspected of covert racism. Let's have balance.

The ‘riggers’ thing is stupid. Redefining a word to mean another word because it sounds like another word….and doing it because of politics. It’s stupid and not worthy of discussion. Now look how they get a pass as experts on reading Trumps mind. If that’s usually a bad thing here it shouldn’t get a pass because they don’t like Trump’s politics…

rehajm said...

I think the racist question is a smoke screen, relevant only to the extent that the left can’t afford more erosion of the once solid black vote. They put the black prosecutors out there so the liberal whites in charge won’t be held accountable for the abuse of the judiciary should they not pull off their shit show. They’ve signaled they’re concerned about that…

Of course it was. What isn't a veiled racial slur, or dog whistle to the only people who hear or see those things...the REAL racists. At this point, what difference does it make??

As with most things that Trump says, I would prefer to not speculate about his racism if it detracts from the focus on Trump’s stupidity, his sociopathy, and his criminality.

There have been enough overtly racist statements from Trump to make a general racist judgment on him without resort to any questionably vague statements.

I saw “RIGGERS” and it caused no suspicious reaction with me as I read it. All that I have been thinking about is the same thing that Ty Cobb, Andrew Weismann and other experienced federal criminal practitioners and prosecutors have been thinking; that Trump is very quickly talking himself into more severe pretrial orders in all of his cases. On substantive issues. Trump’s promotion of his Monday “report” being such an example. Trump is again trying to try his case in the media. Explicitly. It's not illegal to be a racist. It is illegal to violate pretrial orders.

Trump, interestingly, isn't under any pretrial order yet in Georgia. He hasn't appeared for arraignment. But that's a bit of a silly technicality. He's on his fourth arraignment this year. If he has purposefully squeezed a media dog-and-pony show about his case into a time just before he appears for an arraignment on that same case, no Fulton County judge is going to be fooled, and Trump will quickly find himself under very tight trial court control to protect the jury pool.

The Clinton campaign chairman is backing a demand from 10 electors for an intelligence briefing on Russian interference in the presidential race. - The Atlantic

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/12/podesta-electors/510449/

So the Clinton campaign wanted to tell electors about the Russian interference accusation that they had cooked up themselves, as a coverup for their own collusion with Ukraine, in order to "overturn an election." If they had the evidence against Trump that is laying out in the open against Clinton and Biden, Trump would be locked up right now, and I would personally pull the switch on the electric chair.

I will probably be dead by the time it happens, but this country is headed for collapse. Democrats will rule over the rubble, but they won't be recognizable to Democrats today.

I may convert to Islam, at least they are honest about their beliefs and their goals, well, generally, and they have a political ideology that likely can survive the coming calamity.

I think that the states that lost electoral votes due to "errors" made by Biden's census bureau, votes which, just by chance, shifted from red states to blue states, should bring Joe Biden up on charges of "theft of electoral votes." Oh yeah, and House seats.

rehajm said...

Given the somersaults they have do to to try to get there I’m inclined to believe Trump is not only the least criminal of our Presidents but the least racist…

Fixed it for you. I know you guys operate on the principle of projection, that if you smear the other guy with your own guy's flaws and weaknesses, it's hard for people to sort out the truth, but you have to veer from the playbook every once in a while or you become a joke.

I think that Trump's main problem is that he is *not* a sociopath.

No really… I’m no longer surprised by the people who clearly hear Trump’s dog whistles. I just had a relative visit who is a union rep for riggers. Riggers are used to, get this, rig rigging. Most often it is for lifts, but can be for transporting goods. It is basically people who secure things in place.

Brian said...

Rigger is a common word although maybe not in politics.

Dictionary definition: a person who rigs or attends to the rigging of a sailing ship, aircraft, or parachute.

a person who erects and maintains scaffolding, lifting tackle, cranes, etc.
a person who works on or helps construct an oil rig.

Someone involved in construction all their life will certainly come across the word "rigger".

I notice that a quick google search shows the racist narrative from a bunch of different news outlets though this morning, so the attempt at narrative framing is in full force.

I guess they are afraid of Trump actually fighting back.

Big Mike said...

Lots of things can be rigged — elections, obviously, and also sails on a ship; juries; ropes, nets, and cables for lifting heavy loads; and certain games of chance. We cannot call the people who are involved in such activities “riggers” anymore, lest the sort of dipshits who read the Guardian take offense? They can go straight to Hell. I refused to give up “niggardly” and I can’t see myself not using “riggers” for people who rig things.

Mary Beth said...

What word would you use for someone who has rigged an election? Or who works with rigging in construction, theater, oil drilling or anything else that has some sort of rigging? The word has been around for 400 years.

Along with changing those job names, Outrigger hotels need to change their name. We'll need a new word for those projecting attachments on boats. Rigger is the new niggardly.

There was a time when a broad vocabulary was a good thing. Now you have to be afraid to use a word other people don't know if it rhymes with, or sounds similar to, a taboo (to you) word.

Amadeus 48 said...

Yes. Yes indeed. What should one call those who rig? Everyone knows that a civilized person would refer to them as “regroes”. I note that the best book so far on what really happened in 2020 is Mollie Hemingway’s “Rigged”.

Althouse, this is stupid. We can all see the results that public officials have brought to our major cities. San Francisco and Chicago are urban paradises, right? Public administration can speak for itself…and perhaps should answer charges. And if public officials engage in idiotic political prosecutions, well, it is OK to say so. It is OK to call those who rig elections “riggers”.

The Guardian is just trying to shut up the marginal critics of the clown posses that currently infest our public offices. You reap what you sow.

I never thought Althouse would become a member of the anti-“niggardly”*brigade. If you let idiots dictate the language you can use, they are winning.

Dear Trump Fans,

I wish I had a nickel for every time that Trump published some weird misspelling, or some crazy grammatical error, or some wording misuse/malapropism. The all-caps obsession.

Covfefe. Hamberder. "White House Council." "An unpresidented act [by China]." "Honered to serve." "Teresa May [UK PM]." "Tapp my phones." Milktoast. Liddle. "A smocking gun." "The media likes to pour over my Tweets."

You get the idea. And it is a bit of an Althouse/Scott Adams kind of thing to try to take Trump typos seriously, as next-level communication tools designed to perk up reader interest or to send brilliant Trumpian messages.

Again; I don't read that much into it. But if you want to give Trump all sorts of odd credit for genius-level typos, then you better get prepared to answer for the subliminal racism too. Your choice. Either Trump is a semiliterate dolt (my view), or else he is an ultra-conscious communication genius (and racist troll).

Here's a tip to all you dummies on the Center-right. stop imputing good faith to the Liberal/left. They're calling you a racist because they hate you. Stop acting like this isn't a pattern of behavior that's been going on for years. And stop pretending they're "confused" or "crazy" or "stupid". Because they're not.

They want to call Trump racist. They want to call anyone who opposes them racist. Say that. And stop pretending they'll be reasonable when they read your 14 page memo on how they're wrong.

Its been going on since the greatest man McCain ever knew, John Lewis, said he was called "Rigger" by tea party activists in 2010. No TV or phone camera recorded that word. No one was identified. No one confessed to it. It didn't happen. He made it up. Because the charge is an attack. And Lewis hated the tea party.

With Trump, one never knows but my hunch is that he planted the word RIGGERS, all caps no less, because he knew that his opponents would latch onto it and make themselves look like imbeciles.

It makes sense from a pure mathematical standpoint: People who think it's a veiled slur wouldn't ever support Trump under any circumstances. Those same people lose some bit of influence with the broader public when they beclown themselves by getting triggered in this hypersensitive way.

I wonder at what point people will start to acknowledge that Trump is old and not all that much more with it than Biden. Although Trump was clearly referring to those whom he asserts rigged the elections and not these prosecutors, the word "riggers" does in fact very accurately describe what these prosecutors have done, regardless of what race they happen to be. Legal experts like Turley and Dershowitz have already pointed out that some of these indictments are assembled like a complex web of inappropriate charges scaffolded to look in totality like a crime but not in fact fitting the legal definition of a crime. Whether or not they did this with malignant intent is a separate issue. The charges themselves are elaborately rigged (no quotation marks needed).

Strange that a person that has spent his live building high rise buildings, and renovating those would use such a common term.

As several have pointed out, it is a common term. IF you happen to be a blue collar worker. Riggers is a common term, in the work a day world.

The take away? Self determined 'journalists' know nothing. They live their lives in rigid silos of information, and just know very little of the actual world they live in.
They literally know nothing. But opine with great certainty.

Just a short example of why govt is sliding down hill fast in the problem solving game.

Supply chain issues are much in the news. Fixing them...not so much. The container ports in California are a big part of the problem. A big portion of the incoming containers must be moved out by truck. Half the trucks in the United States cannot operate in California, because of California's emission standards. Also, because of Federal commercial driver license regulations, 18 year old Truck drivers cannot leave the State of California. They can drive the state from north to south all year and rack up 100's of thousands of miles, but cant leave the state.

How hard would it be to just lift the emission standards and age restrictions, to address the emergency?

Long time readers of Althouse blog will undoubtedly recall the many vicious and racist attacks against black republicans and conservatives launched by LLR-democratical and Violent Homosexual Rage Rape Fantasist Chuck.

These attacks were leveled against Clarence Thomas, Ben Carson, John James amongst others.

Chuck's infamous slur against Ben Carson (only capable of running a "Department of Black People") was enough all by itself to justify the banning Chuck received.

But again, I think it is helpful when democraticals like LLR-democratical Chuck take time out from pushing pro-groomer stances and rabid far left Soviet lawfare thinking to let their racist Freak Flag fly.

Transparency in debate is always a good thing.

Webster defines a "rigger" as "a person who rigs; a person whose occupation is the fitting of the rigging of ships; a person who works with hoisting tackle, cranes, scaffolding, etc.; a protective structure around a construction site and when applicable, a mechanic skilled in the assembly, adjustment, and alignment of aircraft control surfaces, wings, and the like."

How do we get to "racial slur" from there?

"Rigger" is a very common word in the theater. It's used to describe anyone who is involved in the process of rigging the scenery or the performers. It's also used a lot in the construction industry. (Especially when dealing with crane work.) There is not a current synonym for it, so it is the only word to use. I actually own a copy of The Rigger's Handbook.

“Trump's legal advisers urge him to cancel press conference to refute Georgia allegations” ~ NBC News

“A Large, Complex, Detailed but Irrefutable REPORT …. Based on the results of this CONCLUSIVE Report, all charges should be dropped against me & others — There will be a complete EXONERATION!” (yes that report)

What we have here is a conflict between Trump’s press strategy and his legal strategy. Trump wants to publicly lie but his lawyers are telling him it will damage him in court. I was looking forward to hearing his motive for committing crimes. I wonder if Mike Lindell had a hand in preparing it because he’s been such an effective fact checker for Trump.

"I saw “RIGGERS” and it caused no suspicious reaction with me as I read it. All that I have been thinking about is the same thing that Ty Cobb, Andrew Weismann..."

Since we're talking about racism, the original Ty Cobb - the Georgia Peach - has long been incorrectly portrayed as racist. But that was an invention of a northern sportswriter who hated Cobb's guts. And he was portrayed in the media as a villain at the time - sometimes even with good reason - so it was easy for the public to believe the worst of a white southerner.

That's not how it works. The way it works is that you keep repeating the lies and avoid direct quotes from primary sources at all. costs. Otherwise you end up with a complete indefensible mess, like the indictments. I am not worried that Chuck is going to shut me up with a whole slew of racist direct quotes from Trump, to put me in my place, because these quotes don't exist, at least not in any original context. All such quotes that I have ever seen require a great deal of studious ignorance of the original, in context quote, and a lot of mind-reading to lard the smear with stuff that isn't actually there.

This is why I sometimes suspect that Chuck actually is a life long Republican who is here to inoculate us against the left by presenting a weakened and easily debunked version of their arguments, except that their arguments are apparently already that weak.

What Is a "Rigger" in Film and TV?
Back in the day, when people sailed across the world, riggers were the ones who controlled the ropes and the sails. And on boats across the world, there are still ones who do that.

But in film and television, they have a very different and also very similar job.

Rigger Definition in Movies and TV
A rigger works on ropes, booms, cameras, lights, lifts, hoists, and other similar apparatuses for a film or television show.

"Sources tell ABC News that Trump's legal advisers have told him that holding such a press conference with dubious claims of voter fraud will only complicate his legal problems and some of his attorneys have advised him to cancel it."

In other words, Trump's lawyers decided it was better to distract him with the notion of filing it in court, rather than let him make their jobs any more insurmountable than they already are. I legitimately don’t understand using the phrasing “Trump’s baseless allegations of fraud about the election” instead of “Trump’s lies about the election.”

I’m open to a good faith argument, but…?
