"I’m just sick of seeing him! I know he says he’s gonna retire—someone needs to grab that little elf and chuck him across the Potomac."

Said Ron DeSantis, quoted in "DeSantis Rages About ‘Little Elf’ Fauci: ‘Grab Him and Chuck Him Across the Potomac’/A man was recently sentenced to three years in prison for threatening to hunt down Fauci and break every bone in his 'disgusting elf skull'" (Daily Beast).
DeSantis, who recently debuted a performative tough-guy “Top Gov” campaign ad with himself as “Maverick,” has long taken aim at Fauci to burnish his MAGA credentials.

Last year, for instance, he began hawking “Don’t Fauci My Florida” merch as coronavirus cases spiked in his state. Fauci, meanwhile, has been the target of countless death threats. A man who said he wanted to break every bone in Fauci’s “disgusting elf skull” was recently sentenced to three years in prison.

I'll just do a poll:

Should DeSantis be calling Fauci a "little elf" and envisioning a violent action against him?

pollcode.com free polls

Background on the second option, from the Wikipedia article "Dwarf Tossing":
In October 2011, Ritch Workman, a Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives, introduced legislation that would overturn the ban on dwarf-tossing, claiming such a ban to be an "unnecessary burden on the freedom and liberties of people" and "an example of Big Brother government." Although not a personal advocate of the activity, Workman stated "if a little person wants to make a fool out of themselves for money, they should have the same right to do so as any average sized person."

Per Randy Newman:

Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason to live

[Verse 1]
They got little hands, little eyes
They walk around tellin' great big lies
They got little noses, tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes on their nasty little feet
[Chorus]
Well, I don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
Don't want no short people ‘round here

[Bridge]
(Short people are just the same as you and I)
A fool such as I
(All men are brothers until the day they die)
It's a wonderful world

[Chorus]
Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody to love

[Verse 2]
They got little baby legs, they stand so low
You got to pick 'em up just to say hello
They got little cars that go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers and dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time

[Chorus]
Well, I don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
Don't want no short people 'round here

Fauci and his followers wanted to paint DeSantis as a baby killer and a granny killer. He's been called "Death Santis". Rebecca Jones won her Dem primary for Congress. I don't think "elf" is out of line.

And chucking him across the Potomac is to get him out of Washington. Not "into" the Potomac. Across it.

Other options should be "I don't know," "I don't care," and "Meh. Politics as usual."

It's certainly undignified, but one would have to decide whether this is a call to violence or just a joke. Also, whether Fauci's actions still entitle him to "short privilege" or whether he lost it through his actions. I think it's a joke, and Fauci deserves snarkiness at this point. Probably, DeSantis shouldn't have said it, but one has to call out all public figures who make similar comments or condemnation of him looks politically motivated.

Peter Dinklage will probably complain, if he can spare the time from taking work away from other short people.

tommyesq said...

I think he was misquoted, and what he actually said was "that little f" (as in "that little f**k").

Also, lest you think calling Fauci an elf warrants a three year jail term, the individual in question plead to sending emails to Fauci for a seven month period of time threatening to harm and/or kill Dr. Fauci and members of his family, as well as sending threats to the former Director of the NIH, the Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as a Massachusetts public health official and a religious leader. He admitted to doing so with the intent to intimidate or interfere with the performance of their official duties and with the intent to retaliate against Dr. Fauci and Dr. Collins for performing their official duties. In two of these emails, he referred to Fauci as an elf ("sickening elf visage" and "satanic elf skull").

So no, this is not precedent for jailing DeSantis.

Are you talking about "leftist" politicians, (the few there are), are you talking about among the public? If the former, who are they and what remarks? I'm sure I would deplore similar comments by Democrat public officials.

The public are the public, and there is no expectation they abide by a certain decorum. There is no point in castigating members of the public for their childish utterances. For the governor of a state to make such a needless and adolescent remark about another public official is disgraceful to himself and to his office. It's also hollow posturing, given that Fauci has already announced he is leaving his post. There was no point or purpose for DeSantis' remark other than to earn brownie points among the more thuggish-minded of his current (and potential) supporters. These are fascistic tactics.

DeSantis should have demanded a forensic accounting of all of Fauci's dealings with NIH, the transnational NGOs he's been working with, and all the kickbacks from the pharmaceutical industry that have flowed.

Juxtapose those findings with his past decisions, and the evidence ought to be quite clear who Fauci has been working for, and it sure as hell isn't the citizens of these formerly United States.

Just about every agency in the Federal government needs to be cleared out, audited, and then shut down. They don't actually accomplish anything they're supposed to, and all the billions upon billions of dollars we lavish on the do-nothing jobsworthies like Fauci just get wasted.

His handling of the AIDS crisis should have gotten him fired. The fact that that useless twit was still in a position of power? Ludicrous, and it just shows how badly Congress is doing the job it is supposed to be doing per the Constitution. Fauci has screwed up so many times and in so many different ways--Look at the early days of COVID, wherein the people sent to Japan to assess the cruise liner full of exposed people showed up without training or proper PPE, and then pumped those exposed passengers back into the US with such disgraceful speed and lack of coherence. Look at how they shut down that doctor who was doing epidemiological studies in Seattle and found early signs that COVID was here in the US...

The CDC has been FUBAR for a very long time, along with NIH and the poor bastards at USAMRIID. I used to work around a microbiologist Army officer who worked out there back during the mid-1990s, and his epic tales of backstabbing bureaucracy were food for thought. Ran into him again, after 2001, and it was interesting how his predictions about how well they'd do responding to things like Ebola and the Anthrax attacks played out. He was spot on in predicting ineffectual idiocy, sloth, and bureaucratic infighting ruling the day.

He had a white paper he'd done up, that he let me read, and which detailed the sort of things that real "public health" organizations should be doing in this modern era, like monitoring and testing at all the local hospitals here in the US, and doing "disease intelligence" internationally. None of the things he recommended have ever been implemented, and likely won't be until well after it's too damn late. Yet, we spend billions on this stuff already, and got blindsided by COVID. Which we damn sure should have known about, since the NIH was paying for the research that more than likely produced it...

It hard to even fathom or absorb the depth of the crime that Fauci helped commit upon the world and especially the American public.

1) He and Gates helped fund the gain of function testing being conducted in the Wuhan lab. Gain of Function testing is one of those should we, not can we scientific questions. No, you fucking shouldn't. It's dangerous and unnecessary. It's Dr. Frankenstein bullshit.

2) Fauci goes along with the "COVID came from batsoup" at the Wuhan Wet market bullshit story, even though the wet market was open again by April or May 2020. What did they do? Wipe is down with a little bleach?

3) Fauci LIEd to Congress about the gain of function testing. He knows Rand Paul is right, and has the goods on him.

4) Fauci rolls around in his new found authority and celebrity. His hubris grows, even to the point where he stated publicly, "to question me, is to question science itself".

So 5' 9" Ron DeSantis is calling 5' 7" Tony Fauci a dwarf. I guess Breslin's famous comment about "a small man in search of a balcony" has changed to "in search of a measuring stick."

Medical Definition of dwarf: Sometimes considered offensive, a person of unusually small stature especially, a person whose height does not exceed 4 feet 10 inches and is typically less than 4 feet 5 inches.

I think that tossing the 79-year-old Fauci across the room, no matter how tall he is, is a threat worth investigating. DeSantis needs to abandon his ape-Trump mode and desist playing to bigots and wallowing in their muck.

Lee Moore said...

"This is a Trumpish comment by DeSantis."

I agree. It's a carefully selected soundbite to attract the Trumpist vote in the primaries, if Trump decides not to run. (I don't think DeSantis will run if Trump runs.)
DeSantis would like Trumpists to see him as Trump's natural successor.

He risks alienating some centrists in the general election, but probably reasons that by then, Fauci's stock will have sunk so low that few will regard him as a sympathetic figure, and so the media won't bother reshowing it.

But DeSantis doesn't have Trump's talent for humor, so he should probably stick to being cruel to people who everybody naturally loathes, like the media. His own talent is portraying competence, possibly even actually possessing competence, and there's plenty of GOP voters who have had enough of Trump's dog and pony show. So just enough aping Trump to nail down the nomination with the Trumpists, but don't try to be Trump 2.0.

This is Alenski, pure and simple. And I think that DeSantis has read his book. Fauci has killed too many people. Caused too much pain. He needs to be out of DC and out of a decision making position. We, his base, know what he meant here, and many, if not most, think it funny. And all the libs taking it literally, and getting scandalized at it, just makes it more delicious for us. And gets a lot more play as a result. The best thing that they could have done, was to ignore it. But they couldn’t help but get scandalized, and that spread it nationwide. For a tactic to work, it has to be fun for your base. This qualifies. It also emphasizes that he was one of the most effective governors opposing Fauci and his idiotic and deadly actions. What’s Chriss going to say? How horrible that DeSantis would say something like this? That just reminds FL voters that DeSantis saved lives, and that Chriss probably wouldn’t have. Best thing that he could do is ignore it. I don’t think that he can. (Big) advantage DeSantis.

This week on The Bachelorette, Rachel was scheduled for three home-town dates -- one of which was with Tyler, who is rather short. Rachel went to Tyler's home town and walked around with him there, but then she decided not to visit Tyler's family. She broke up with him, got into the producers' van and rode away.

Tyler's family and the camera crew were in the home, waiting for Tyler and Rachel to come visit. Tyler came alone and told them sadly that Rachel had departed, that he would not visit them.

This was the first time on the show that this happened.

Rachel herself had selected Tyler as one of her three home-town dates. While they walked around in his home town, he was charming and loving. So, why did she change her mind about him?

I think a major reason was that she decided belatedly that he is too short for her. She herself is rather short, and they looked like a well-matched couple in that regard.

However, her other two home-town dates are rather tall. I think they look too tall for her, but she apparently has decided that her future husband must be tall.

======

Also, she perhaps figured out that Tyler and his family do not have much money. She saw that he works in a carnival.

Although she herself did not see Tyler's family and his family home, the television viewers saw them, and they looked low-class.

======

One of the two villains in the movie Dirty Dancing is Neil Kellerman. The movie script even specifies that he is rather short, and the actor indeed is rather short.

(The movie's other villain is Robbie Gould, who is played by a rather tall actor.)

======

Being a short man is a social disadvantage -- and is perceived by some people to be a moral failing.

Now way too many people who have suffered under Fauci's thumb, diktats and such simply want to drop kick Fauci. Maybe over the Potomac--maybe just down the stairs of a federal office building. But he has earned a good deal of anger, outrage and contempt.

Never forget ... Fauci threw out the first pitch at a Nationals game wearing a fucking mask ... only to be caught later during the same game sitting between two people maskless.

You need a version of option 1, where the violence isn't metaphorical and is still ok. This man funded gain of function research in a wholly irresponsible manner that released the virus into the world, and the virus and the Fauci-led lockdown reaction to the virus cost millions of lives and trillions of dollars in chaotic economic damage, and unimaginable loss of faith in the institutions of Western Civilization.

So yeah, non-metaphorical violence is ok by me. It can be after a fair trial, preferably.

Saved lives?! How do figure that? Florida has the fourteenth highest death rate from Covid, lower than New Jersey but a little higher than New York (which you claim completely fucked up the response), and there are plenty of reasons why you would expect NY and NJ to have much higher death rates than FL (which you claim completely fucked up the response). And that is even if you think that Florida reported accurately.

Like Trump, DeSantis spews bullshit and you believe him.

Good point, Cook. I think there were enough gifters and Democrats who wanted to be on the take to make up a significant percentage. Not 81 million, of course. Zuckerbucks paid off the rest.

If there are plenty, why didn't you name any? Maybe you could compare the median age of New Yorkers vs Floridians. Florida. You know. That place where New Yorkers go to retire? That's one, perfectly good reason why Florida's numbers should be higher. But they aren't.

DeSantis did it right. Cuomo did not. The numbers prove it.

Cuomo did fudge the numbers, but he got caught and had to revise them.

DeSantis did it right. Cuomo did not. The numbers prove it.

How do the numbers prove it? Death rates are practically the same.

If there are plenty, why didn't you name any?

Because I thought you could work that out for yourself. But two major factors are climate (NY is a hell of a lot colder) and population density (NYC is the most densely populated city in the country, where a little less than half the population of the entire state lives).

Maybe you could compare the median age of New Yorkers vs Floridians. Florida. You know. That place where New Yorkers go to retire?

Here is the median age (FL 42.7, NY 39.4). I'll go further and provide percent of population over 65 (FL 20.1, barely beating out Maine for first, NY 16.1)

Florida. You know. That place where New Yorkers go to retire?

Think about it, if you can afford to buy a condo at Del Bocca Vista, that means you are at least solidly middle class (sorry but I couldn't find a source for net worth for older Americans by state. Consequently, you have better underlying health and can afford better care. If you are not very well off, well then you are stuck with cold winters. Look at the states with the highest death rates, they had policies similar to Florida.

Dumb Fuck Freder at it again. The most important metric on mortality from COVID is the numbers of people over the age of 65. Median age in Florida is almost 3.5 years higher in the Florida than in New York, and 2.5 years higher than in New Jersey. The other demographics also favor New York and New Jersey- more white people, more Asians, fewer blacks, and fewer Hispanics.

Some time back there was an article in The New Yorker that chronicled Fauci's career. The gay community had a lot of complaints about him during the early stages of the AIDS epidemic. They expressed their complains about him with many inventive tactics and insults. Fauci, to his credit, reached out to the gay community and changed a fair number of CDC policies in order to redress those complaints....It's instructive to note that Fauci did not take offense at those complaints and tactics. nor did any on the left.....I disagree with the insult. The argument should be about Fauci's policies, not his height, but Fauci is far from the most criticized man in public life.....Here's a few tepid words in Fauci's favor. I think he was wrong about a lot of things, but there's a difference between being wrong and being malicious. He should not displace Cuomo as the star villain of the Covid drama.

I see Epidemiologist Freder has weighed with some of his wisdom. DeSantis took a chance and went with the "Great Barrington Declaration," written by real epidemiologists, rather than by bureaucrats like Birx and Fauci. He kept the state, and the schools, mostly open and did not wreck the economy like Birx did.

Florida has an older population yet did as well with his policies as states with better demographics. Sweden pretty much mirrored Florida and also did well.

It's probably too late to point out that he called him an Elf, not a Dwarf. Elves get played by Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler, and that really cute Canadian lass (Evelyn something?) about whom Craig Ferguson keeps saying "isn't she just adorable?"

Dwarves get played by Peter Dinklage.

So it's not really an insult.

The big killer was vaccine side effects. Of course, the CDC tried to hide them by the way they counted, or didn’t count, the side effects. But the excess deaths, esp from insurance companies, are going to show the real situation, and it’s ugly. DeSantis did whatever he could to eliminate stupid vaccine mandates, along with providing therapeutics.

If you think that I am wrong about the dangers of the vaccines, please explain the mechanisms involved that would actually make people less likely to become sick, as a result of the 2nd and subsequent jabs? I don’t think that you can - since the FDA, CDC, etc have continued to heavily push 2nd and subsequent jabs, despite the patients’ immune system was previously mimprinted with the knowledge of the two archaic spike proteins.

@Freder

Some quick facts for you.

Cold vs warm weather doesn't hold. Of the the top 13 states by death per 100k only two are above the Mason Dixon line (NJ and MI).

FL is #2 in % of people over 65 per the 2020 census with 4.7m (21.3%). NY #24 with 3.4m (17.4%), and NJ #30 with 1.5m (17.0%). As you can see FL (79.5k deaths = 735/100k) has 1.3m more people over 65 than NY (70.2k deaths = 797/100k) and 3.2m more than NJ (34.5k deaths = 834/100k).

Percentage of deaths by race isn't a huge factor. Slightly higher in hispanics, slightly lower in caucasians. Insignificant in blacks.

Given the huge differences between these states in the at risk populations and the fact that 80% of covid deaths are from people over 65 you would expect a much higher number of deaths and deaths per 100k in Florida. You should be able to do the math on that. It would be hard to argue in good faith that FL didn't outperform both NY and NJ for the at risk population.

The stats on excess deaths (delayed medical treatment, suicide rates, etc) are hard to figure, but by most metrics FL performs in at least the top 10. Economic harm from business closures, childhood harm school closures, and other factors should be included in any discussion of how well a state did also.

It's pretty obvious that policies put in place by DeSantis outperformed those of both NY and NJ in deaths, economic outcome, and child development.
