Oh, Spotify, you know us so well.

Meade and I have separate Spotify accounts, but we link them in a playlist they call "Ann + laurencemeade/A blend of music for Ann and laurencemeade." Today, we noticed a spot to touch with an option called "View Blend story." Okay. Spot touched. This screen pops up:

"The song that brings you to together"! Ha ha. Can't you imagine us sitting around hating capitalism together? I wonder what the actual song that brings us together is.

You can listen to the song here. I'm not recommending it, just showing you that it is a real song:

What a horrible song.

Amazingly enough, Barbara Dane is still alive at age 95, and presumably still hates the capitalist system.

Really bad lyrics composition. The meter has to fit natural accent patterns.

Why wouldn’t you recommend this absolute gem?
She has the voice of an angel.

It has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I give it an 8.

Does Barbara get royalty checks from Spotify?

Wikipedia says this about Dane: ""Bessie Smith in stereo," wrote jazz critic Leonard Feather in the late 1950s. Time wrote of Dane: "The voice is pure, rich ... rare as a 20-carat diamond" and quoted Louis Armstrong's exclamation upon hearing her at the Pasadena jazz festival: "Did you get that chick? She's a gasser!" On the occasion of her 85th birthday, The Boston Globe music critic James Reed called her "one of the true unsung heroes of American music.""

It's a bit like that day before the last Presidential Election when Apple 'brought us all together' by locking us all out of our paid music accounts and we could listen only to Black Lives Matter playlists.

That day is also known as The Day the Apple Music Died in my household...

This is pathetic. Was it Hugo Chavez’s favorite? Did he sing it while wrecking what should be the richest country in South America?

If she hated the capitalist system before, just wait 'til she sees how much Spotify screws the talent?

I didn't listen to the song, but the post made me burst out laughing. Thanks :)

Comparing this singer to Bessie Smith is like comparing Mrs. Miller to Billie Holiday.

I love Louis Armstrong, but we have to part ways on this. His musical tastes were unusual, though. He maintained that his favorite band was Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadiens. The only other person I know who likes Guy Lombardo is me.

Nothing says “capitalist system” more than this song and the algorithm that brought it to your attention.

I'm curious about the origins of the song, but I'm not going to search that phrase and have it be part of the massive file Go@gle keeps on me.

My guess for you two’s song would be Peggy Lee’s Is That All There Is.

I just listened to Jordan Peterson interviewing a Senegalese woman named Magitte Wade, who doesn't hate the capitalist system. Very interesting. I'm not sure that she can sing, though.

I'm not sure Barbara can sing, either.

I like a somewhat eclectic mix of country, "alt-country," blues, rock, and some stuff that doesnt really categorize (but no male manipulator music for me, thank you).

No matter what mix Spotify puts together for me, they seem to default to horrific dirges about how horrible life is in America. Even the "Happy Songs" playlist.

I transcribed the lyrics:

I Hate the Capitalist System
Robert and Richard Sherman

Lets get together, yeah yeah yeah
Why don't you and I combi-ine
Lets get together, what do you say
We can have a swingin' ti-ime
We'll be a cra-a-azy team
Why don't we ma-a-ake a scene
Together, oh oh oh oh
And destroy the Capitalist System

Lets get together, yeah yeah yeah
Think of all that we could sha-are
Lets get together everyday
Every way and everywhere
And though we haven't got a lot
We could be sharin' all we've got
If it weren't for the Capitalist System

Nothing could be greater, say hey alliga-tah!
Let's get together, yeah yeah yeah
And destroy the Capitalist System

According to Wikipedia, Barbara Dane married a folk singer, a jeweler and a music producer (also a Communist), but no coal miners are mentioned.

My husband suggests they factored in your zip code in that selection.

The will of the People will not be denied! Also, the People's rice production has far exceeded this year's expected yield due to the worker's communal spirit and their elimination of capitalist roaders.

didn't it bring you together? in your disgust of the song?

I thought "our song" would have been "Grab that little elf and chuck him across the Potomac."

OK, wait, maybe a sliver.
But it's a slender sliver.

You guys need to alter the course of your spotify by requesting The Shaggs.

For me, there are only two pieces of music: Ave Maria, Bohemian Rhapsody.
