"The White House strongly supports this historic nomination"/"Since this historic and eminently qualified nominee...."

Oh, how I loathe this overuse of "historic"!

The quotes are from a spokesperson for the White House and a spokesperson from Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown, from "Police report reveals striking details about Biden nom Saule Omarova's 'retail theft' arrest/Omarova admitted to stealing $214 worth of items from T.J. Maxx in the police report" (Fox News).

I don't know what's supposed to be striking about the details. That the items were 4 pairs of shoes, 2 bottles of cologne, 2 belts and and some unstated number of socks? That Omarova was 28 when this happened? That the charges were dropped under a Wisconsin "first offender" program? That she's a Cornell Law School professor? That she's written about Marxism and recommended an end to banking "as we know it"?

I really don't know. But I also don't know what's supposed to be historic about her. If the article says, I missed it. Is it that she is in some minority group that hasn't yet been represented in the leadership of the particular part of the government — Office of the Comptroller of the Currency — that Biden nominated her to lead?

Can we stop using "historic" that way? Everything is a "first" if you define the category narrowly enough. "Historic" denotes great importance.

I had to look to another news source to try to understand her status as a member of an identity group. Here's "A look into the ugly and incredibly personal fight over Biden's pick to oversee banks" (NPR):
Omarova, who came to the U.S. as a university student, and is now a U.S. citizen, strongly denies she holds communist views. She accused her critics of singling her out because she is a woman and a minority.... Omarova was born in what is now Kazakhstan. She came to the U.S. as part of an exchange program when she was a student at Moscow State University in 1991. But when the Soviet Union dissolved, she was stranded in the U.S. Today, she is a U.S. citizen.

She could not fly back to Kazakhstan, because all the airlines would have singled her out because she is a woman and a minority.

If any R votes for her they should be primaried.

The only reason she was detained while shoplifting was that the store detectives singled her out because she is a woman and a minority.

I demand a position in the Biden administration for which I have no experience, but I'm eminently qualified! The only reason I'm being held back is because I'm being singled out as a man and a minority!

Please support my nomination to a huge $ government (i.e., taxpayer) funded job - it will be historic!!

Prof A: Omarova is "historic" all right. You have to look beyond what she's done --like stealing an armload of non-essential stuff at an age (28) when most of us humans are supposed to be mature and law-abiding without adult supervision. And you have to look beyond who she is --like FIRST WOMYN COMMIE WITH ZERO SKILL BUT A BIG MOUTH, etc.

You have to look at the history she is going to CREATE if she gets into power. The history of unprecedented economic disaster for this country and by extension the rest of the planet.

It's staring us all in the face. She's not the only one responsible for this gigantic dumpster fire, but if appointed she will most certainly contribute greatly to it.

IMHO.

Honestly I'm more inclined to hold the shoplifting against her. But there is a conundrum here. On the one hand, we probably shouldn't attach too much importance to any pro-communist things she said while the Soviet Union was still around. She'd have to say such things, just to earn the state's trust and be allowed to study abroad, yes?

On the other hand, the Soviet state had a vested interest in only allowing trustworthy communists to study abroad. So was she fooling them then? Or is she fooling us now? Or was she always sincere, and her views have changed?

Conspicuously absent from the reporting I've seen are any details about her academic work, her public statements about economic theory and policy, or any other damn thing on the record that might actually put this controversy to rest.

There is a potential problem here for the progressive narrative. In order to have many "historic firsts" and to maximize the potential size of the progressive coalition, non-white has to be defined broadly. At some point, we need to acknowledge that Omarova was nominated precisely because she hates the American way of doing things. Well, (1) it is perhaps relevant she didn't steal necessities, but rather luxuries; an arrest for stealing bread or baby formula would, I think, provoke a different response; (2) she is being nominated to be THE regulator for.....America's banking industry. While a 25 year old shoplifting arrest might not be relevant to someone being nominated to other positions, or running for office, or, indeed, becoming a professor.....one would think a "regulator" would be, you know, someone without an arrest record for petty theft? Was there no one else with similar expertise who could have been nominated for this post?
Or is this a bug-or-feature thing, where her Chesa-Boudin-apres-la-lettre resume was a PLUS?

How close to the Manchurian Candidate script do we need to get before people see what is going on? Born in 1966 in "Kazakhstan," which was actually the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, a part of the USSR at the time and remained a part of the USSR until 1991, the last of the Soviet republics to seek independence. Omarova was steeped in communist education. She went to the Moscow State University in 1989 on the Lenin Personal Academic Scholarship, where her thesis was "Karl Marx's Economic Analysis and the Theory of Revolution in The Capital." She then "moved" to the United States - was sent, more likely - where she obtained a PhD in political science and got a law degree, neither of which qualifies her for the position to which she has been nominated. As recently as February of this year, she advocated bankrupting oil and gas companies to address climate change and proposed having the Federal Reserve "end banking as we know it" and implement price and wage controls - i.e., set up our very own centralized "five-year plan." Sound familiar?

So, we have a nominee who is likely a communist plant or sleeper agent, who has advocated demolishing the very thing over which she would have control and instead create Soviet-style control over the country's economy, nominated by a pseudo-President who is likely being controlled by foreign Communist powers. I think the petty theft is the least of my concerns.

I don’t know if Saule Omarova wants to nationalize the banking system by forcing all of the United States banking customers into one bank run by the U.S. government, whether by the Federal Reserve or some other federal agency. If true, that would give the federal government total access to everyone’s money and financial data. There would probably be no need for legislation to allow the IRS to access peoples’ banking info to see if they are hiding money from taxation as was recently reported to be in bills in front of Congress if there is one bank run by the federal government as they already control peoples’ banking data. Also, if the IRS considers that a taxpayer is not paying enough in taxes, could they seize that person’s money? Chilling thought. If Omarova’s defenders say that she isn’t a Marxist, this alleged proposal of hers sure smacks of Communism and state control of U.S. citizens’ lives!

I do hate the use of the word "historic" too, but in this case it is appropriate. She'd be the first Marxist in charge of the banking system.

She's also a person of poor character. I don't care that she was a first offender thief. And at age 28, she was a mature person.

The irony here is that she's a Marxist who stole from a capitalist store. As head of the OCC, she'd be conducting another form of stealing.

What I find especially significant is that Ron Klain and Janet Yellen nominated a known Marxist and thief to lead the OCC and actually thought she could be confirmed. WTF?

Dave Begley said...

Does promoting an "end to banking as we know it" sound like "regulating banking"? Once you've ended banking as we know it, what's left to regulate?

She wants the Federal Reserve to provide retail banking services. But that's an independent unit of the government, and it has its own governance board. So how could the Comptroller accomplish this? And, WHY?

This nomination looks to me like the nomination of our first "female" four star transgender admiral, Rachel (nee, Richard) Levine. Something intended to pander to the weirdest part of our society, while rubbing everyone else's nose in the dirt.

"First Lenin-scholar, Marxist, shop-lifting (as an adult) bank regulator who wants to do away with retail banks and have the Govt take over that sector."

Historic in the sense that no one ever before thought that might be a good idea!

gilbar said...

means that the arrest was

You see this sort of thing more and more, and not just in political contexts. You see it in weather reporting, where almost any event will be hyped as historic. Often that’s an effort to link the weather to climate change, but it is also often just hyping for the sake of hyping. You see it a lot in sports: “Wilson is the first quarterback to throw for 275 or more yards in the each of the first five road games of his seventh season in the NFL”. I mean, so what? I think a lot of this comes from people having access to computers and sortable databases and apparently not much ability to see what really might be important.

Gosh, I wonder why people are opposed to her nomination. The tweet re gender pay gap in the old USSR is also factually wrong.

The OCC charters, regulates, and supervises all national banks and federal savings associations as well as federal branches and agencies of foreign banks. The OCC is an independent bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

“Until I came to the US, I couldn’t imagine that things like gender pay gap still existed in today’s world. Say what you will about old USSR, there was no gender pay gap there. Market doesn’t always ‘know best,’” she tweeted in 2019.

In a recent paper “The People’s Ledger,” she proposed that the Federal Reserve take over consumer bank deposits, “effectively ‘end banking,’ as we know it,” and become “the ultimate public platform for generating, modulating, and allocating financial resources in a modern economy.”

Ms. Omarova has recommended a “National Investment Authority,” with members overseen by an advisory board of academics, to finance a “big and bold” climate agenda.
And would also like a politically and structurally independent “Public Interest Council” of “highly paid” academics with broad subpoena power to supervise financial regulatory agencies, including the Fed. The Council, she explained, would not be subject to the “constraints and requirements of the administrative process.”
On the oil, coal and gas industries: "We want them to go bankrupt if we want to tackle climate change."

The term "shoplifting" has distinct connotations for Americans raised in a capitalist society. But Ms. Omarova grew-up in a communist society. It's likely that in her mind she was not shoplifting, she was appropriating public goods that she needed. Remember the Marxist creed: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs". Ms. Omarova simply secured "free access to and distribution of goods, capital and services". About the US fossil fuel energy sector, Omarova says: We want them to go bankrupt if we want to tackle climate change, right?”. Sounds like a typical Communist / Marxist way of tackling a project - use a sledge hammer when a fly swatter will do. This woman has no clue what such an abrupt action will do to this country’s economy or how many people will suffer from the ability to keep warm in the winter or having no food to eat or a job because of all the businesses that will have to shutdown due to lack of energy - basic necessities to survive (although the Amish will survive since they don’t usually need fossil fuel energy to live and they grow their own food, I would think). To abruptly convert our energy needs entirely to “renewable” energy is not only impossible, but supplying all of the energy needs of this country via wind and solar is a fool’s errand with the current technology. I am leaving out nuclear as the same “greenies” pushing wind and solar also are against nuclear anything - civilian and military. And most likely they are against hydroelectric since dams also alter the environment and ecology.

On second thought, maybe she does know what she is doing. Destroying our country from within and enslaving its citizens just like the Soviet Union (and most of the countries that it broke up into), China, Cuba, etc. Along with what the Biden Administration and the Dems in Congress are trying to do on other fronts with policy and out of control spending and taxation.

"In one paper, Omarova suggests the federal government could offer a bank account to every American through the Federal Reserve."

This is an idea first advocated by Irving Fisher in 1935 and later endorsed by a number of monetary economists including, at one time, Milton Friedman. The proposal was that all checkable deposits should be backed by 100 percent reserves held at the Fed, which is equivalent to converting all checkable accounts to reserve accounts at the Fed.

The main reason to do this is to insulate transactions money (checkable deposits plus currency) from the vagaries of the credit markets. With a fractional reserve system like we have now, a financial crisis that makes some banks insolvent due to poor lending practices or a general panic can force a contraction in the money supply. That can induce or make worse a recession.

In a 100 percent reserve system, all the money used to conduct transactions is a liability of the Fed and entirely under its control. Financial booms and busts don't directly affect the money supply, only the Fed does. Accordinly there's less reason to bail out insolvent financial institutions.

It's not a bad idea, and it's easy to see why the banks don't like it. Banks become finance companies that evaluate credit and loan prospects, and aggregate funds of individual investors to make loans. Banking becomes more of an ordinary business with no special "financial stability" justification for special treatment when they make bad decisions.

"when the Soviet Union dissolved, she was stranded in the U.S."

Yes, stranded in a (then) 1st world country with abundant food, electricity, and freedom. Kind of like being forced to spend a week at Disney World.

And as Ed Morrissey notes:

“That’s entirely the thrust of Omarova’s public philosophy, as Scott detailed through her own words. The question isn’t whether an old peccadillo should sideline Omarova, but why Joe Biden ever nominated her in the first place.”
