March 13, 2021

"In the weeks leading up to the 2020 presidential election, The New York Post, the nation’s oldest newspaper, broke a major story based on documents and emails obtained from the laptop of Hunter Biden..."

"... son of the front-running presidential candidate Joe Biden. Those documents shed substantial light not only on the efforts of Hunter and other family members of President Biden to trade on his name and their influence on him for lucrative business deals around the world, but also raised serious questions about the extent to which President Biden himself was aware of and involved in those efforts. But Americans were barred from discussing that reporting on Twitter, and were actively impeded from reading about it by Facebook. That is because Twitter imposed a full ban on its users’ ability to link to the story: not just on their public Twitter pages but even in private Twitter chats. Twitter even locked the account of The New York Post, preventing the newspaper from using that platform for almost two weeks unless they agreed to voluntarily delete any references to their reporting about the Hunter Biden materials (the paper, rightfully, refused). Facebook’s censorship of this reporting was more subtle.... The censorship justification was that the documents on which the reporting was based constituted either 'hacked materials' and/or 'Russian disinformation.' Neither of those claims is true.... While we will never know whether this censorship altered the outcome of the election, it is clear that this was one of the most direct acts of information repression about an American presidential election in decades."

From the opening statement of Glenn Greenwald before the House Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law yesterday.

We shouldn't overlook the fact that to leftists this is a fact indicating that "their" party is supporting the rich and suppressing stories critical of them. We think this is obvious and has been for a long time and why mention it. That's not how they see it. They want reform. And no wonder. The Republicans are the only party that could conceivably be considered for the workers and Greenwald and Taibbi (and Inga) would die like slugs with salt on them if they had to support a Republican.

Like Insty says, it’s de facto censorship, the very kind of censorship that the left holds up as a possibility in their justifications for “net neuratlity.”

“Disinformation” is another word for the other side getting their story out. You can’t let people hear the other side! They may get the wrong idea.

McConnell has been completely exposed as a deep state/ChiCom affiliated (through the McConnell family ChiCom shipbuilding deal)/"Washington Generals"/"Failure Theatre" type.

And as we speak McConnell is working with the republican controlled Kentucky legislature to take away the power of the governor (currently a LLR-approved and beloved far left dem) to appoint a replacement in the case of resignation.

As soon as that bill is passed and over riding a Gov veto, McConnell will declare he's leaving for health reasons and then off he goes.

Such blatant double standards are a completely rational exercise of power, and the answer to it isn't going to be sober debate at any level. Twitter has decided to use some its editorial discretion. Are they doing it for political reasons or because they don't want to be a venue for what they consider to be fake news, or both? Why does it matter. They have First Amendment rights. And, the story was published right before the election and the main reporter refused to put his name on it. Twitter doesn't have an obligation to be a vessel for such "news" if they don't want.

If you don't like Twitter then don't use it and don't read it. But for some reason conservative voices just can't stay away - eg Trump Jr. Taylor Greene and on and on. Twitter has a #hunterbidenlaptop hashtag with thousands of posts.

People never had problems communicating with each other before the internet and social media. And all of those forms of communication still exist - cable tv, talk radio, newspapers, leaflets, in-person, phone, etc. And apart from social media there are thousands of political websites to get the news and opinion that fits your own wants and beliefs. They aren't being censored or cancelled with very few exceptions, eg ISIS. And there is email. And texting. And blogs, etc.

So this idea that people are being silenced when the available modes of communicating are ten times greater than just 30 years ago is ridiculous.

Although I really wasn't interested in the Hunter Biden stories because people never seemed to have any evidence that his dad did anything illegal - just sheer speculation, it was a cover-to-cover story on Hannity and Carlson, etc. for weeks on end. It was as if Hunter was running for President.

Btw, did Tucker ever find the smoking gun on Hunter that he lost in the mail (w/o first making a copy)? What did it show?

Sure, that's easy. Greenwald wrote in the wake of the Capitol riot that none of the rioters used Parler to organize the riot, which was so instantly, obviously and provably untrue that it eliminated any claim Glenn could make to being a journalist ever again. The problem s that it worked. They both worked to get Biden “elected” President. Likely they desperately needed both to win. Awhile back, there was a survey of Biden voters, and they were asked about a series of pro-Trump and anti-Biden facts (like this one) that had been hidden from them last year, and somewhere between 1/5 and 1/4 said that they would have voted differently if they had known the truth that was kept from them. I am not sure I believe the numbers there, but try this with the people you know who admit proudly to having voted for Biden: ask the if they knew about the $1.5 billion of Chinese money Hunter got to manage, that Joe had prevented the Ukrainians from investigating his son by threatening to withhold our money from them, that Hunter banged his recently widowed sister in law, that he was fathering a kid out of wedlock, that he had spent much of the previous decade high on cocaine, curtesy of our govt, that Hunter and Jim Biden were apparently kicking a percentage of their graft back to Joe, etc.? Not it at all, really.

Because he doesn't carry water for the party closer to his views, when I disagree with him (which I do quite a lot) I still take him seriously. Because of this, on some issues where I used to disagree with him (e.g. government surveillance in the name of security against terrorism) I've decided he was right and I was wrong.

Greenwald is a journalist, in the old sense of the word, a concept you don’t understand.

So far as I can tell, he’s not in the business of advocating policy positions.

Shouting Thomas said...

It’s very odd that people think that opposing censorship and electoral fraud is a partisan policy issue.

stevew said...

From what I can tell, Greenwald is a liberal, but that never finds its way into his journalistic activities. In that role he is a truth seeker and teller. He can be trusted.

Matt Sablan said...

Greenwald seems to me to be fairly classically liberal when it comes to First Amendment issues (though, from what I can see, he's also modern day liberal on healthcare.) And that's just from perusing his tweets.

Matt Sablan said...

Hey! Here's a Greenwald quote that shows he's an honest leftist when it comes to criticisms of Immigration policy: "Make sure to say “kids in cages” as many times as you can for the next few weeks because starting on January 20, 2021, that phrase is going to disappear from the lexicon so fast it’s going to make your head spin, even though there will still be plenty of kids in cages." That's from Nov. 14, 2020.

Matt Sablan said...

Here's Greenwald taking a very liberal position: We shouldn't ban books: "The fact that this recent spate of book bans is aimed at something so seemingly trivial (and yes, they were bans as well voluntary discontinuance: by EBay and libraries) makes it more menacing, not less.

If even old kids' cartoons & the like can now be banned, what can't be?"

Matt Sablan said...

Hey, here's a position that is fairly solidly liberal/Democrat -- or at least it was, when Republicans are in charge! "And predictably -- just as happened during the Cold War, Oklahoma City, & 9/11 attack -- FBI is now using the threat of "insurrectionists" and "domestic terrorism" to justify greater surveillance powers. That's why exaggerating the threat is so dangerous."

It seems like the problem isn't that Greenwald stopped being liberal. The party left him, so to speak.

Matt Sablan said...

"It is no surprise that the rhetorical leaders now are the same lowlife neocon and Rovian slanderers — Bill Kristol, David Frum, Steve Schmidt, Nicolle Wallace, Rick Wilson — who demonized all who questioned the first War on Terror as traitors, terrorist-lovers and subversives." -- Glenn Greenwald, noted non-Liberal.

"In 2017, we profiled a same-sex couple in Brazil who set out to adopt a child only to find out he had two siblings and adopted all three (https://theintercept.com/2017/02/06/a-same-sex-couple-set-out-to-adopt-a-child-they-ended-up-with-three/). We then did a short film. Decide for yourself if they'd be better off left in an orphanage:" -- Glenn Greenwald, noted guy who never posts or does anything regarding left-leaning politics.

Shouting Thomas said...

I just looked through all of Greenwald’s recent essays at Substack, and I don’t see one that advocates a policy position.

Matt Sablan said...

Shouting Thomas: That's why I had to go to his Twitter, where his personal opinion (as well as his editorials), leak through more. For example, here you can find him supporting the Fight for $15: "He didn't pretend. He said he was opposed to an across-the-board increase and favored a $15/hr minimum wage for large corporations, not small businesses. I don't agree but he was candid about his views... I'm not defending it. I favor the full-scale minimum wage nationwide raise that just got rejected and that he voted against, and don't believe it will cost jobs on balance. Just saying if you do believe that, the bill to raise it for big companies isn't anti-worker." https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1367892121584295937

For the purpose of discrediting Althouse and giving her blog hosting company ammo to shut her down.

I assure you, there are men in those units with live ammo. Nearly 40 years ago when I commanded, whenever we took weapons out of the arms room, somebody carried live ammo. The only thing more embarrassing to the Army and career ending than losing a weapon would be fore somebody to come up and take automatic weapons from defenseless soldiers.

Normally, I assigned the guy I trusted most with my troops safety and my career to carry the ammo.
