January 8, 2021

Twitter has "permanently suspended" Donald Trump "due to the risk of further incitement of violence."

ADDED: Here's a detailed explanation from Twitter, objecting to the 2 tweets Trump put up today (which we've been discussing here): "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th" and "The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!" What's so bad about those?

According to Twitter, they violate the "Glorification of Violence policy." It doesn't seem to matter that the words don't refer to violence at all. They "could inspire others to replicate violent acts and determined that they were highly likely to encourage and inspire people to replicate the criminal acts that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021." Twitter expresses fear that there could be violence at the Inauguration because Trump could be understood to be "disavowing his previous claim... that there would be an 'orderly transition' on January 20th." I hadn't thought about this, but Twitter offers the idea that violent Trump supporters could be incited by the information that Trump won't be present at the event! Strangely, Twitter may be giving some people that idea. I don't think I would have published it if I'd thought of it.

BREAKING: Apple and Google Threaten to Ban Parler Unless The Service Enacts Draconian Censorship Policies Demanded by Big Tech Oligarchs

Joe Smith said...

He should (somehow) announce that he also has accounts on competing platforms, and looks forward to all conservatives cancelling their Twitter, etc. accounts immediately.

They will still ban him, but it will be a very bad look, and validation that these companies and their CEOs are nothing but democrat operatives.

If he is smart, he will negotiate an equity deal with the new platforms because he will be delivering millions of new accounts.

Something tells me this isn't good for the long-term health of Twitter company. Social media companies thrive on being the go to place for that specific type of social media. Facebook relies on being the only social networking network. Twitter relies on being the only place people can go to get people's hot takes. If there is a switch away from Twitter it will happen very suddenly. Facebook and MySpace were very competitive until there was a public perception that Facebook was the one to be on then there was an incredibly rapid shift to Facebook. Twitter risks that there is an exodus to other platforms and if one of those platforms hits a critical mass there will be massive switches to the new 'public square'.

I get this means there is no interruption in your day to day, and for most people this is probably fine. But if someone wants to reach lots of people, they need access to a large network to get their message out. And people who have access to a large enough network of people are going to be much more effective at shaping media narratives. The Conservative instinct of simply ignoring it and retreating to their own thing may not work.

Apple & Google can attempt to ban Parler from their stores, and that'll make life a bit more difficult for the users but there are work-arounds. For one thing, it can be accessed via a web interface from any platform & there's nothing that can be done to stop that, short of shutting down the servers. I'm sure that'll be tried, but other servers can always be found, including overseas.

Also, apps can be installed by means other than the app stores, e.g. Here's how to do it for iOS.

It's definitely more of a PITA but as samidzat hardships go, it's pretty minor.

A strong majority of the rank and file combat soldiers are conservative/republican, which is one reason why leftists like LLR-lefty Chuck despises them with a white hot passion.

Further, large numbers of police, in particular sheriffs and constables, skew more conservative.

So when the lefties insist, and they are already setting the stage, on declaring all Trump voters/populists/conservatives "unworthy" of societal protection, it will make for an "interesting" confrontation scenario.

Hmm, the ccp did this same type of maneuver in Hong Kong before the big crackdown on the democracy movement there. ALL opposing accounts and content were removed from all social media. I have seen some links today that indicate that facebook, twitter, etall are in the process of removing accounts and content that they say are 'inciting' here in the US. Curious thing is that they are all conservative. No leftist accounts or content promoting actual violence against people who have a different political opinion are ok, and in some case promoted.

So it is OK to advocate that ALL Trump supports - which would include the 75 million or so wjho voted for him - need to be dealt with NOW. Some rants are calling for public violence against a large group of the US populace, but since the ranters are left and the intended victims are conservative, that is apparently OK.

My what a strange place we find ourselves in.

I've been thinking about that. Are the military as conservative as people think? Maybe not. And I expect they take their oaths seriously, which means they will stay with the government and follow orders as long as they can justify it, and people can justify a lot of things. The city police are probably a mixed bag, the good ones will probably leave if things go bad and there is a place to go. Local sheriffs will likely stick with the locals. The National Guard is a mystery to me.

But what do I know? What does anybody know? We could be entering unknown territory. Too old to fight, to old to run, I'm just spit balling and keeping an eye open.

If the democraticals and deep staters stick to form as other leftist crews have in history, they will send forces, most likely the National Guard, to locations where they are not from to reduce the chance of "familiarity"-inspired refusals to follow orders.

That is standard practice in the lefties beloved Communist China and the former lefty beloved Soviet Union.

Its been done elsewhere as well.

Lefties ratting out their neighbors is to be expected.

What is really in store for us is the pooling of data between our own big tech and the deep staters to create the coming Social Media scores which big tech has already delivered to Xi and his ChiCom amigos.

So, while it will be helpful for the lefties to rat out their neughbors, and they will, gleefully, the more pressing danger is what Snowden and others exposed long ago regarding our internal spying capabilities. The very ones deployed against congress, journalists, citizens and the Trump campaign.

That much power...it was inevitable it would be abused.

I did read Twitter’s explanation and thought it was weak. It didn’t focus on the content of the recent two tweets but rather on how they might be interpreted by some of his supporters. It’s problematic to announce on Twitter that he would not attend the inauguration? Don’t see it.

Brian said...

I want to propose a thought experiment. What statement could Trump have made regarding Biden's inauguration that would NOT have resulted in a ban according to the standard Twitter has used?

If Trump had said he was going to Biden's inauguration would that have been safe? If he hadn't answered the question at all would that have been safe? If he had said he was going to the inauguration and was going to personally kneel in front of Biden and ask for forgiveness would that have been safe? All of those statements could be construed as leading to violence. If no statement is safe what does that mean?

The rationale for their ban is not logical. This is about control.

I worry that we don't have a president in this country until January 20. It's extremely possible that nobody is answering orders from the White House anymore.

I'm Not Sure said...

A quick correction to Qwinn, I think.

The military does not take an oath to support the government. They take a oath to support the Constitution.

We used to get lectured on that difference regularly back in the day.

I think it is a critical distinction. I also think it gives someone in the military a way to justify going against the government if they think the govt is violating the Constitution.

It may not be any good as a legal defense. But it may help them feel more comfortable in their mind.

The prez is the commander in chief and uniformed military are required to obey all lawful orders from anyone above them in the chain of command.

But they are also required to disobey unlawful orders. An order that contravenes the Constitution would certainly be unlawful.

Exactamente! And the legal definition pertaining to '...enemies foreign and domestic.. ' is explained in this excerpt from Defense One, a definition by--of all people--a Berkeley law professor:

Most Constitutional scholars would side with Berkeley law professor Orin Kerr in reading the provision much more narrowly. Wrote Kerr: “The oath is probably best understood” not as an invitation for millions of Americans to independently enforce their own view of the Constitution, rooting out domestic enemies as they see fit, but “in its historical context as a promise to oppose political reforms outside the Constitution. You have to stay loyal to the government that is based on the Constitution, and you can’t support a rebellion or overthrow of that government.”

Instead, they want to double down on political suppression. I was shocked Wednesday, but the reactions since has put me on the banks of the Rubicon. If I see impeachment/amendment 25 and more oppression, I will CROSS that Rubicon!

Never in my dreams could I have imagined the anger that is growing within me towards my government and their media/tech company enablers.

"When the SHTF, what side will rank and file military stand on?"

Obama fired all of the generals with balls.

He made the rest pledge fealty in order to keep their jobs.

I don't see any spine in that group.

Rank and file should be better, but who knows...

Darkisland: Not sure what I've said that you're referring to? I haven't said anything about military being loyal to the government rather than Constitution.

My view on that is I think the military has all they need in the oath to get involved in this struggle by the simple words "against all enemies foreign and domestic". Well, that and orders from their CIC.

I am actually gaining hope at this point. The completely over the top attempts to utterly silence Trump, to not let him get another word out on completely ridiculous basis, tells me they're *terrified* about what he *could* say. And one of the things he said in that speech that Ann analyzed was "wait till you see what comes out over the next few days" (I was there when he said it). And now suddenly EVERY corporation is trying to shut him up? That tells me what he has to say is an existential threat to all of them, or at least they're afraid that it is. The fact that over 20 laptops apparently went missing from the Capitol on Wednesday could easily explain the timing of that panic here.

Note that I believe the Left are domestic enemies to both the government and the Constitution. They may actually BE the government now, but that was accomplished by unconstitutional means such as fraud, bribery, blackmail, infiltration, weaponization of law enforcement, unequal application of the laws and a dozen other sins. The government we have is not the government that would exist in the absence of those crimes, and the military's duty is to that displaced legitimate government that must be restored for the Constitution to mean anything at all.

Milquetoast Lindsey Graham was accosted in an airport and called many bad names by the patriots in the concourse. I think "asshole" and "traitor" were among them. Later, he went on Twitter to criticize that platform's decision to close DJT's account.

The Republicans had a chance to alter Section 230. Now it is too late.

The republicans are squishes who ALWAYS cave to the Democrats which is why Trump is so popular. He fights for us...the only one who ever did.

I wonder how many buttered scones will be served in November 2024 when Biden has his successor over to the WH for tea.

Parler runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS). So, in addition to Apple and Google blacklisting Parler from their app stores, AWS will throttle and ultimately deplatform Parler. On a side note, Parler claims to never share personal information and that may be so but AWS happens to be a major CIA contractor ... what may we deduce from that relationship?

Michelle Dulak Thomson said...

Clyde,

Apple is threatening to shut down Parler unless it moderates content and comments. They’re giving them 24 hours, supposedly.

The most ridiculous 24-hour ultimatum since the one Austria-Hungary gave Serbia in 1914. And look what that got us.

Joe Smith,

Can you say oligarch?

I knew you could.

EXACTLY. We in the US are under the impression that mega-billionaires with boundless cash and near-infinite power exist only in some other countries far, far away, and that they and their comfy dachas can safely be ignored. Not so.

Readering said...

Are we still talking about Trump?

GDI said...

OTOH, AWS may keep Parler up and running ... easier for the overlords to monitor conservative "wrongthink".

It's really hard not to own these tech giants, comprising as they do about 25% of the S&P index, but it's probably worth trying. And it's a good time to divest, as they've run far ahead of most stocks, and there's been a trend into value and smaller companies observable since late fall. And Twitter is a dog of a stock and company anyway.

Readering said...

Twitter is a dog of a stock because providing a platform for a loon with a gazillion followers does not translate into lots of revenue. Finally figured that out yesterday.

daskol said...

I see, so alienating some huge portion of those gazillion followers is going to translate to more revenue. Thanks! I'll pick up some shares right away now that they've ironed out the kinks in their business plan and no longer need that network effect to pump up their valuation.

daskol said...

when Twitter announces their first ever huge decline in users next quarter, that's when we can expect it to skyrocket as the finance types react to hard evidence that Twitter has rid itself of those 10s of millions of pesky users.

Readering said...

If only the solution to twitter's profit problems were that easy.

"I've asked this before and never got an answer from anyone that I recall. When the SHTF, what side will rank and file military stand on? And will the National Guard fire on its own citizens?"

Ashli Babbitt could answer that question, were she still with us.

"Permanently suspended" does not sound like an internally consistent concept. In any case, I had already suspended Twitter for the duration of my life. It will be hard to make that truly "permanent," but if I can, I will.
