"There was an eerie sense of inexorability, the throngs of Trump supporters advancing up the long lawn as if pulled by a current."

"Everyone seemed to understand what was about to happen. The past nine weeks had been steadily building toward this moment. On November 7th, mere hours after Biden’s win was projected, I attended a protest at the Pennsylvania state capitol, in Harrisburg. Hundreds of Trump supporters, including heavily armed militia members, vowed to revolt. When I asked a man with an assault rifle—a 'combat-skills instructor' for a militia called the Pennsylvania Three Percent—how likely he considered the prospect of civil conflict, he told me, 'It’s coming.' Since then, Trump and his allies had done everything they could to spread and intensify this bitter aggrievement. On December 5th, Trump acknowledged, 'I’ve probably worked harder in the last three weeks than I ever have in my life.'... Militant pro-Trump outfits like the Proud Boys—a national organization dedicated to 'reinstating a spirit of Western chauvinism' in America—had been openly gearing up for major violence. In early January, on Parler, an unfiltered social-media site favored by conservatives, Joe Biggs, a top Proud Boys leader, had written, 'Every law makers who breaks their own stupid Fucking laws should be dragged out of office and hung.' On the Mall, a makeshift wooden gallows, with stairs and a rope, had been constructed near a statue of Ulysses S. Grant.... I followed a group that broke off to advance on five policemen guarding a side corridor. 'Stand down,' a man in a maga hat commanded. 'You’re outnumbered. There’s a fucking million of us out there, and we are listening to Trump—your boss.' 'We can take you out,' a man beside him warned."

Two plus divisions for an unarmed insurrection? What are they expecting, or planning? The words we are reading don't match what we are seeing. I don't have an answer, but we know this "all Trump supporters are domestic terrorists" isn’t real.

'Every law makers who breaks their own stupid Fucking laws should be dragged out of office and hung.'

That's insurrectionist? You could probably get agreement with that sentiment across 95% of the electorate. There's nothing more galling than a lawmaker who imposes rules that he breaks when it suits him. Even the people who decide to look the other way don't like it. I mean, does anyone --- anyone --- think that HRC's behavior with the email server & secured data was a good idea? Or, was it something to overlook in order to get a "greater good", i.e. HRC in office? Did Gavin Newsom's high-end restaurant outing win him any friends among the electorate?

As for the Proud Boys' term "Western Chauvinist", what the hell does that mean? That's clearly either a technical term within the Proud Boys ideology, or it's an imposition by their opponents. In neither case does its casual use in a New Yorker article explain anything.

The parents are divorced in all but name, and quite frankly the 'doing it for the kids' is up in the air as well. At this point living in the same house is a necessity, but like any divorce/separation it won't remain that way for long. An ever descending series of ever more egregious actions - eventually leading to the 'last straw' - will continue to manifest until an interparental royal rumble.

Someone will leave. Someone will get the house. 'Friends' will be 'weaponized' to get involved and 'take sides' if you know what I mean.

I have no doubt some militant Trump supporters acted stupidly. I also have no doubt False flag operations by Antifa militants escalated to give us what happened. The media will do all they can to hide the truth.

Except the Capitol Police. The National Guard. The Mayor of DC.

I am pretty damned sure the Democrats and Republicans had to know. One can only wonder why they were not screaming for some large show of security.
And of course, the FBI knew, but for some odd reason wanted to keep it to themselves. They do that with the truth pretty regularly as it turns out.

It's not like a massive crowd in a highly charged political environment has never responded to some well-lit sparks.

Nonapod said...

You can find people who will say anything. Saying and doing are two widely different things.

What happened at the capitol last week was never a true insurrection attempt. I don't care how many articles in the NYT, WaPo, or The New Yorker there are that attempt to argue the point.

I'm not saying that there aren't some dangerous people out there. And I'm not saying that violence from right wingers won't happen in the coming weeks and months. It very well could happen. People are angry and feel disenfranchised. And I truly feel like there's nothing that the incoming administration is doing or saying is doing anything to mollify these feelings. There's no healing. In fact, the way the tech companies are behaving seems to be ramping up the feelings of anger and distrust.

The Gell-Mann amnesia effect, kicked in here.

The artical states that Gates farmland purchases were by Cascade Ivestments, Gates' investment firm.

Small nit to pick. Lots of states prohibit Corporate Ownership of Farmland. I know Iowa does, and the article lists Iowa as one of those state where "Gates" bought property.

While is sounds like lots of land. Its not. I have a higher portion of my net worth in farmland than Gates does. Land is hedge against inflation, like metals. It is not a good income investment, and only works for the long haul (decades) and is not liquid at all. Maximizing profits require the ability to wait years for the price to rebound, in bad years. Like the last 8 years in Corn/soy production areas.

I've discovered something I hadn't thought of in respect of Trump in the past few weeks. He never had the bodies necessary to take control of the FBI, CIA, DOJ and the federal bureaucracy. Unlike a career politician, he obviously did not spend decades building up a retinue that he could cast in crucial roles. He never really took control of the ship. The outsider bit runs aground here. I hadn't expected that.

Trump wasn't even able to control the electoral process. He had no tentacles out into the states and locals so that he could stop the massive and illegal manipulation of the voting laws.

This is really something to consider. This is a reality of the music biz, too, which I've known all my life. Being a great musician isn't enough. You have to be associated with the right people and you have to have your ducks in a row.

Trump failed a realpolitick test, here. I've thought for some time that the prof, an obviously clever office politician, objected to Trump on this ground.

Maybe. I used to work with a group from Pakistan. The wealthiest always wanted to go back because almost no level of income here could reproduce the lifestyle of the reasonably wealthy there. They wanted to live with 20 servants to take care of everything.

Disruption and chaos increases the wealth gap by reducing alternate opportunities. This makes tangible lifestyle improvements available to the elites.

Trump made a mistake in calling this rally. I’d been telling supporters that for weeks before. Without regard to the validity of the election or Trump’s allegations, he’d run out of options. Nothing good could possibly come out of that rally.

Politics is pure physics. For every action you get an equal and/or opposite reaction.

This event on the Capitol did not happen in a vacuum. What was blasting on media and getting results was Black Lives Matter and antifa week after week terrorizing ordinary citizens and small businesses— across the nation. Remember the scenes of antifa demanding black power salutes from ordinary citizens? That looked a lot more like the Lethario Schwarzenegger’s Kristallnacht.

The DNC at their convention spent days honoring Black Lives Matter and showing the protests on big movie screens as heroes to America on their televisions. I had people from overseas calling me up and saying you have to vote for Biden or there will be a war in your country. That’s what it looked like to some non-Americans.

Now The Right— a significant amount of Americans— does not have too many places to be heard. That is a recipe for disaster—and The Left seems to want to invite it. You don’t compare current events to Pearl Harbor unless you want the event to actually— in hindsight— rise to that level.

You can see the chilling effect on Twitter already among the conservatives left there. Liberals unchecked who are grabbing more power and pushing voices of opposition underground are driving the country towards even more chaos because they will not be counterbalanced through ordinary means— they are trying to ensure that.

No one, not even me in my fullest paranoia, understood just how utterly the DC bureaucracy had been infiltrated. Based on the behavior of the FBI, and the utter lack of a single whistle-blower to their crimes, it looks like they are infiltrated down to the night janitor. Not a single man left there who would recognize allegiance to their country over allegiance to the leftist project. That the media, even the "Republican" media, spent a LOT of effort pimping the notion that "there are tons of good agents in the FBI's lower ranks" is revealed for the propaganda that it was. I wouldn't trust the FBI to change a light bulb. And that such total infiltration and political capture was successful even in the agency that should have been the most resistant to it proves that there isn't a single institution left that doesn't belong completely to the Left if they had any desire to capture it. There is not one mechanism in place in any of them to offer the slightest resistance to it.

If the article is trying to claim that there were groups on the mall on 1/6/2021 with long guns, I very, very much doubt that. The authorities, both District & Federal, would freak the hell out if there were groups armed with long guns on the Mall near the Capitol and Congress in session. If that had been the case, much heavier law enforcement would have been brought to bear. To bolster my case, the authorities are now claiming that they expect "armed groups" and there are two freakin' divisions of NG in town.

It also bolsters my case that the reporter is making shit up that, if the mob was armed, why were the few shots that were fired during the melee come from the Capitol Police?

Sorry. Not passing the smell test.

...like a security guard for the house (in Brazil, anyone with a moderately nice home hires private security when they're not physically in it).

...and high fortification-like compound walls.

Where were the “arms” among the “armed” demonstrators referenced by Queen Nan? Why did riot police use flashbangs, gas, etc., on the densely packed center of the crowd where retreat was impossible instead of at the front to stop the confrontation? Who were all those masked young guys in black with MAGA hats on backwards? Why did Capitol Police invite some protestors into the building? When did Trump people ever behave like this? Etc. Etc.

Balkanization and chaos go hand in hand. But even if you separate them the left clearly supports balkanization - that's the entire goal of identity politics. In a society not at war the left provides no value since they have no skills other than developing reasons why some people should hate others.

Remember when the press was reporting on the Tea Party demonstrations. These were some of the dullest people to ever walk the face of the earth, but those good reporters saw them as being sinister and irrational. Well, their prayers of the media have finally been answered. Some flagrant, flaming assholes showed up for a Republican event and committed acts of mayhem. Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive. The media always knew that those Trump supporters were just waiting for the chance to strip off their clothes, paint themselves blue, and murder Dems in their offices. And it's all Trump's fault. Many of the reporters on MSNBC are surreptitiously masturbating while they report on the impeachment proceedings. Unlike Toobin, they keep things out of sight, but those blissful expressions that register on their faces is the giveaway......I have no objections to those who took part in this riot being punished harshly, but the contrast to the way with which these jerks are being treated in comparison to those far more numerous left wing loonies is indeed stark.

Now we have senile, decrepit old Joe Biden, and ambitious power hungry leftists all around. And 26,000 troops in DC, all apparently sworn to protect Joe Biden. All it will take is someone to off him rather soon after he takes the oath and blame Republicans and Trump, and there's 26,000 troops right there to arrest every Republican in town, and what army will stop them? Kamala Harris in charge with an army and total "righteous vindication" to go after anyone who is not a Democrat. Think the media would protest? Talk about the Reichstag fire. Mogulson's latest five New Yorker articles alternate between sympathetic portrayals of Antifa and BLM and scare articles about Trump supporters and lockdown protestors. Before that he wrote some articles from Afghanistan and, yes, published short fiction in the magazine.

It sounds like he seeks out informants who will tell him what he wants to hear about the groups he writes about. Reportage isn't what it used to be. You start with the conclusion and then go looking for "evidence" to back it up. Start with a different conclusion and you find different "evidence" to support it, with "reality" never really breaking through the propaganda.

Commentators, we are being fed only data which supports one narrative - scary for our Republic. This will not end well for our country's future. Our Republic can only survive if the MSM keeps its 'bargain' with the American voters that they will equally stand against both Democratic and Republican 'Elites' and powerful private narratives like those emanating from Facebook, Google or Twitter. Hopefully, now that President Trump is leaving and not available as the obvious punching bag, the MSM will get back to their 'bargain' in our society.
