"Pickles has a comfortable relationship with nihilism.... 'I grew up in the punk-rock scene,' he said. 'And Trump was like punk rock. It’s, like, anti-establishment.'"

"He attended the University of Florida, where he was an English major and a liberal. 'I’ve taken basket weaving and read about the Black prison experience,' he said, with a snicker. (In his shop, Fat Enzo’s, murals of Mark Twain and Hunter S. Thompson share wall space with Huey Long.) He explained that after his father died, in 2015, he sought out new male camaraderie. The Proud Boys filled a vacuum. He claims to have joined not because they are a hate group (as designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center) but because 'they were seeking something.' He said, 'I came to the realization that Trump was awesome, and that I had been brainwashed.' From right-wing podcasts and YouTube, he said, he has learned that 'the pandemic is a scam,' and that 'we live in an inverted dictatorship run by the Deep State and globalists.'"

The headline goes for alliteration: Palm... Proud... Putsch... Pickles... purveyor... punk.

I've written about the word "putsch" before. Do you remember the day it hit the news? It was June 26, 2015, the day the Supreme Court issue its opinion on same sex marriage, Obergefell v. Hodges. I wrote about it here:
Justice Scalia expresses astonishment at "the hubris reflected in today’s judicial Putsch." A "Putsch" is "An attempt to overthrow a government, esp. by violent means; an insurrection or coup d'état." That's the OED. "Hubris" is "o’erweening pride; and pride, we know, goeth before a fall." That's Scalia himself.

I think Scalia capitalized "Putsch" because he intended to write it as a German word and it's capitalized in German. But it's an English word, with, as noted above, an entry in the OED. The New Yorker has it capitalized in the headline and the word does not appear in the body of the article, so I don't know if The New Yorker would go with the Scaliaesque capitalization. As for meaning, "putsch" is correctly used. A synonym for "insurrection" is what the headline writer intended.

Whether the participants indeed had insurrection in their mind is another matter, to be examined in articles like this, interviewing particular individuals like Pickles about what they thought they were doing and what they were able to gather about what other people had in mind.

Pickles seems confused and disturbed by the craziness and the out-of-control escalation: "It happened in the moment. There was just so much momentum. We felt compelled to storm the Capitol. There’s nothing rational about it when you’re caught up in something like that."

Remember when Trump — asked to tell the Proud Boys to "stand down" — said "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by"?

ADDED: Here's a Wikipedia article, "Punk Ideologies." Nihilism is on the list along with anarchism, animal rights and veganism, apoliticism, Christianity, conservatism, feminism, Hare Krishna, Islam, liberalism, libertarianism, neo-Nazism, situationism, socialism, and "straight edge."

It’s not hard to imagine a scenario in which overwhelming police presence had forestalled any attempt to breach their lines or the Capitol. What then: would the cries to remove Trump by hook or by crook be the same, since his words and actions would have been the same?
Would there have been think pieces from pundits claiming to be surprised that there wasn’t an attempt to breach the Capitol?

Putsch implies a plan. There was no plan. It was a protest that turned into a riot. It's happened over and over again this year. This just the first time it happened on the right.

Interesting that "Putsch" is said to be English. I had always figured it to be German. As in "Beer Hall Putsch."

I am looking in my Shorter OED and there is no entry. We get "putrid," "putridity," "putrilage," and then..."putt."

Maybe the word was just invented by Mayer, like the rest of her "journalism."

Remember when Trump — asked to tell the Proud Boys to "stand down" — said "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by"?

Yes, and people seem to think that Trump's response was ominous. Yet Trump was asked, during the debates, to tell rioters to stand down. Trump asked for specifics, was given the name of one organization, and Trump did what he was asked. Trump asked if Biden would do the same and Biden obfuscated.

If what Trump said, as some suggest, was a "wink-and-a-nod"; then what to make of Pelosi calling the JCS and asking the military to stand back and stand by?

There is a vitality in the culture, and it will thrive despite the clumsy attempts to stamp it out. But it's going to be ugly for a while. But I agree, that the genuinely subversive and vital counterculture has been "on the right" for a while now, although I think the term "right" or even "alt-right" is problematic. But at least people more or less know to which group you're referring, the Trumpist deplorable types and their various and vital subcultures. The destruction being wrought by the ham-fisted, lead-footed big tech companies is going to be very creative, but I doubt the suddenly ascendant are going to like their creation much. Maybe we'll see a revival in gothic literature, or maybe all that zombie crap of the last decade was that revival. I don't know, I have to find some cool kids and ask them about it.

That's your hypothesis.

I await investigations. You have no way to know the extent to which subdivisions of the crowd were acting according to a plan. You're just expressing bias if you say flatly "There was no plan." Please step back and become aware of what you know and what you don't know. Don't make assertions of fact when you don't know. Reframe your statements to be accurate and say something like: Journalists should not imply that there was a plan unless they have evidence of a plan.

Also, remember, "putsch" is just in the headline. The text of the article is about one person's perceptions, and that guy did not have a plan and he didn't know what other people thought.

And: a plan can develop on the scene, in real time.

Ann Althouse said...

"Interesting that "Putsch" is said to be English. I had always figured it to be German. As in "Beer Hall Putsch.""

The etymology is German. It has reached the point — according to the OED — where it is an English word. When are we using a foreign word and when does the word cross over and become part of our language? My answer is, when the OED says so.

Listen to Biden carefully: "We're told that Gobels and the 'Great Lie'...."

It was my impression that celebrities on the Hollywood Squares were supposed to "Bluff" their answers, not lie.

Though Hollywood Squares was a legitimate game show, the game largely acted as the background for the show's comedy in the form of joke answers (commonly called "zingers" by the production staff), often given by the stars prior to their real answer. The show's writers usually supplied the jokes.

In addition, the stars were given the questions' subjects and bluff (plausible, but incorrect) answers prior to the show. The show was scripted in this sense, but the gameplay was not. In any case, as original host Peter Marshall explained at the beginning of the Secret Square game, the celebrities were briefed prior to the show to help them with bluff answers, but they're hearing the actual questions for the first time as they are asked on air.

Mayer probably didn't write the headline and she didn't use the word in the article.

I certainly agree that most people who know the word "putsch" connect it to the Beer Hall Putsch:

"Hitler wanted to seize a critical moment for successful popular agitation and support. He decided to take matters into his own hands. Hitler, along with a large detachment of SA, marched on the Bürgerbräukeller, where Kahr was making a speech in front of 3,000 people. In the evening, 603 SA surrounded the beer hall and a machine gun was set up in the auditorium. Hitler, surrounded by his associates Hermann Göring, Alfred Rosenberg, Rudolf Hess, Ernst Hanfstaengl, Ulrich Graf, Johann Aigner, Adolf Lenk, Max Amann, Max Erwin von Scheubner-Richter, Wilhelm Adam, Robert Wagner and others (some 20 in all), advanced through the crowded auditorium. Unable to be heard above the crowd, Hitler fired a shot into the ceiling and jumped on a chair yelling: "The national revolution has broken out! The hall is surrounded by six hundred men. Nobody is allowed to leave." He went on to state that the Bavarian government was deposed and declared the formation of a new government with Ludendorff."

As if Mayer's Putsch talk, given the video of Capitol Police allowing protester in, won't engender talk of The Reichstag Fire.

The Reichstag fire was an arson attack on the Reichstag building, home of the German parliament in Berlin, on Monday 27 February 1933, precisely four weeks after Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany. Hitler's government ...attributed the fire to communist agitators. ... The day after the fire, the Reichstag Fire Decree was passed. The Nazi Party used the fire as a pretext to claim that communists were plotting against the German government, which made the fire pivotal in the establishment of Nazi Germany.

After the decree was issued, the government instituted mass arrests of communists, including all of the Communist Party's parliamentary delegates. With their bitter rival communists gone and their seats empty, the Nazi Party went from having a plurality to a majority, thus enabling Hitler to consolidate his power.

The responsibility for the Reichstag fire remains a topic of debate and research. The Nazis accused the Comintern of the act. However, some historians believe, based on archive evidence, that the arson had been planned and ordered by the Nazis as a false flag operation.

While I have no doubt some of the thousands who were there are ready for violence, there is no evidence at this point to suggest any actual planning. That's an incomplete list, but whoa, my head is spinning.

Lurker21 said...

Putsch comes from German dialect. Sources say it's from the Swiss German for “a sudden blow, push, thrust, shock,” but Swiss and South German dialects overlap.

It's similar with the French/English word "coup" and the Spanish equivalent "golpe" all words that mean a blow or a stroke, especially a sudden one, that have come to be used to mean overthrowing or taking over a government.

Putsch does imply a plan (perhaps because we associate it so closely with Hitler and 1923). While the rioters had their own plans, it's not clear that what happened was part of a plan by Trump or those in his administration to overturn the election certification. A minute's thought indicates the unlikeliness of such a plan and the impossibility of it achieving anything.

But for the major media, words are weapons and every word is employed with a purpose. Right not, it even looks like a single purpose: getting rid of Trump and making sure he doesn't come back.

Quoting from Paul Johnson's "Modern Times":

"But even at this stage some of the key moves in the consolidation of power were not reflected in public decree-laws. In the initial stages of his take-over, Lenin depended entirely on the armed bands Trotsky had organized through the Petrograd Soviet. They were composed partly of politically motivated young thugs, the 'men in
black leather jerkins', partly of deserters, often Cossacks. An eye witness described the scene in the rooms of the Smolny Institute, from which the Bolsheviks initially operated: 'The Bureau was packed tight with Caucasian greatcoats, fur caps, felt cloaks, galloons, daggers, glossy black moustaches, astounded, prawn-like eyes,
and the smell of horses. This was the élite, the cream headed by "native" officers, in all perhaps five hundred men. Cap in hand they confessed their loyalty to the Revolution.'

"These men were effective in overawing the crumbling republic. But for the enforcement of the new order, something both more sophisticated and more ruthless was required. Lenin needed a political police. Believing, as he did, that violence was an essential element in the Revolution, Lenin never quailed before the need to employ terror."

“But if you seriously believe your country’s getting taken over by fraud, you’re going to get nuts.”

Who promoted the idea that the election was stolen. Who promoted the Stop the Steal rally on Jan.6th?

“Trump’s statements leading up to and during the storming of the Capitol building, however, did not include explicit calls for a violent attack on America’s democratic institutions. Instead, those laying blame on Trump are pointing in part to rhetoric that agitated his followers with conspiratorial lies and instilled a sense of imminent doom—while relying on them to make the final decision to act. This is a version of the “stochastic terrorism” tactics common to authoritarian leaders around the world.

In recent weeks, Trump heavily promoted the rally that led directly to the assault on the Capitol. The rally was part of the “Stop the Steal” movement, which, fueled by Trump’s own conspiratorial fantasies, explicitly aimed to halt the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory. On Dec. 19, Trump promised a “big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!” Trump promoted the rally again on Dec. 27, Dec. 30, and Jan. 1, in tweets compiled by the New York Times.”

Hey Inga, besides Trump's pre-debunked claims of conspiracy, Dr. Peter Navarro has put out some interesting information comprising strong evidence, in two volumes, mostly circumstantial but with direction towards turning up the hard evidence in favor of the hypothesis of widespread fraud that could have been dispositive in the election. And Jovan Pulitzer has made some informed allegations, as have various numerate stats-minded folks who are struggling with the improbability of the outcome. Mostly they're pencil-necks and don't have orange hair or powerful speaking voices or platforms. And while there's been much sprinkling of debunking dust, there's been very little refuting or correcting of some of the central claims.

Have any of you read through Navarro's report, or this brief primer from a few years ago from the BBC on what a rigged election looks like? Have you noted how many of the enumerated list of characteristics of a rigged election as defined in that BBC article or Navarros report happened on or around November 3? As far as I know, nobody has sprinkled debunking dust on that BBC report, or the countless other NGO authored analyses of rigged elections.

“For those of you who are soldiers, you know how to do it. Do it right, be in order, make them pay,” her ominous message continued."

Wince: exactly. The big lesson from the "insurrection" is that bad shit will happen when cops and mobs mix, but if people on both sides keep their heads, a chain reaction can be avoided.

However, Trump lost significant political and grassroots support following the invasion and even more after the cop died, so the difference isn't razor thin anymore.

The problem for you Howard is you are acting like Nazi's. There is no pretense. You are not even trying to make excuses.

You send out your BLM brown shirts to attack Senator Hawley's home. You are lying about what Trump said in his speech. You are lying about a "riot" at the capitol. You are using those lies to attack people who disagree with you.

You are attacking everyone who disagrees with you in explicit terms. You are ruining lively hoods of anyone who who disagrees with you. You are destroying businesses and deplatforming anyone who disagrees with you.

You are all scoffing and making snarky remarks. But you never explain how you are doing anything differently than the Nazi's were doing in 1932.

You are making a big mistake moving so fast.

But I don't think you are smart enough to know what you re doing so there is that.

If you were confident in your beliefs you could actually justify what you are saying and what the government is doing. You could justify lying about Trump's speech. You could justify calling this an "insurrection."

You misread me. I said “I await investigations” — with an “s.” There may be the equivalent of the Warren Commission, but even that kind of thing doesn’t end the inquiry. This is a big historical event that will be investigated forever, by government officials and by historians and by all sorts of people, including conspiracy buffs.

The idea that I’m trusting some official process is unsupported by anything that you know about me, so your instinct that you were risking rudeness was accurate.

While I was highly critical of the President's remarks, he never actually called for violence or a riot. Indeed, he expressly told his followers “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” Such marches are common in both federal and state capitols.

Are other protesters also going to face the death penalty for being present in the Capitol? Will their executions also be captured on video and shown to the public?

Until this week, I don't think I'd ever heard the word used in any context other than the Beer Hall Putsch. So I'd assume anyone who uses it in any other context has gone Godwin.

Although it's always seemed peculiar that this word seems reserved for just that one particular event. Was the Beer Hall Putsch really such a unique event, and, had Hitler not come to power and become "Hitler," would anyone other than historians specializing in 1920s German history have even heard of it?

Was it really a "snicker"? Not a "smirk"? Is she sure it wasn't a "smile"? Or maybe a "grin"? I've come to hate "expressive" writing and all the little ways of forcing one's own attitudes on readers. But if doing away with insinuating, innuendo-laden writing means one can't call Kamala's cackles for what they are, I suppose we'll just have to put up with such "colorful" language.
