Near the beginning of this 25 minute video by igpcolorado there is a movie of the
transformations that Colorado has gone through since the Cambrian. This is unusual,
or at least I'm not finding many examples of such a detailed history of transformation
on YouTube. After writing that I realized that over half a million people have viewed
this, which is astonishingly high number for anything to do with geology.

So clearly I'm not the only person to think there is something special about it.

So I've been searching for photos of damage to the Capitol after the rightwing nutter rampage.

I have seen broken glass and furniture, damaged doorways, minor random vandalism, and some upset desks and offices. Oh yeah, a bust of Zachary Taylor was stained with blood (but since when has that been a problem?)

The curators are concerned with tear gas and fire extinguisher residue.

What I have not seen are toppled statues, attempts at arson, or evidence that the true malcontents among the crowd were capable of leadership or even finding their way to their
targets.

I am finally reading Bob Novak's book, "Prince of Darkness." Being as old as I am , I probably enjoy it more than someone younger would. I remember the politicians in the late 50s he writes about in the early chapters. One of my favorite books about politics is Allan Drury's "A Senate Journal." It was his early experiences in DC as a reporter. He later based much of his novel, "Advise and Consent" on that recollection.

One problem is the contrast between those days and today's grifters. Novak worked for the Wall Street Journal for a while and had no idea about the business stories he was supposed to write. He found a great help from Senator Russell Long, who could explain complicated legislation to him. Does anyone think there is a Senator who could do that today ?

Another leftist agent provocateur identified in the Capitol riot.

Mr. Mostofsky is a 34 year old registered Democrat and the son of a New York Judge. He is seen in the picture above dressed in fur, carrying a stick and wearing a bullet proof police vest he had stolen. Mostofsky is standing beside the man who carried a Confederate flag into the event. This indicates they possibly knew each other and both appear to be outsiders and leftist demons plotting to smear Trump supporters.

I don't know that I would call them "demons" but they are not good guys for sure.

As with Communists and modernism, there was nothing inevitable about the match. Most consumers don’t know that by using internet-based (or -generated) platforms—by buying from Amazon, by staying in an Airbnb, by ordering on Grubhub, by friending people on Facebook—that they are subscribing to a life of flatness, one that can lead directly into certain politics. But they are. Seduced by convenience, we end up paying for the flattening of our own lives. It is not an accident that progressive ideas spread faster on the internet. The internet is a car that runs on flatness; progressive politics—unlike either conservatism or liberalism—are flatness. (from Everything's Broken, an interesting rumination on out modern situation)

Here Comes New Speak – Biden* White House To Ban Usage Of Any “Gendered” Language.

Meaning Spanish?

Or Kurdish?
"In Northern Kurdish language (Kurmanji), the same word can have two genders according to the context. For example, if the word dar (meaning wood or tree) is feminine, it means that it is a living tree (e.g. dara sêvê means "apple tree"), but if it is masculine, it means that it is dead, no longer living (e.g. darê sêvê means "apple wood"). So if one wants to say that a certain table is made of the wood from an apple tree, one cannot use the word dar with a feminine gender, and if one wants to refer to an apple tree in a garden, one cannot use dar with a masculine gender."

Meaning the Wuvulu-Aua language?
In the Austronesian Wuvulu-Aua language, vocative words used when addressing a relative often specify the speaker's gender. For example, tafi means 'sister of female', ʔari means opposite-gender sibling, and wane means female's father's sister or female's brother's daughter" wikipedia "Grammatical gender"

Klingon seems OK
The Klingon language does not discriminate between "he" or "she" so it would be a good basis for a new White House language breaking with BadPast. Of course, Klingon does not discriminate between "it," meaning animate and "it," meaning inanimate; but is this a bug or a feature in a Biden* White House?

"From my perspective, I think fairly primeval forces having to do with identity, cultural anxiety, economic insecurity, inequality, class, race, and ethnicity. We're trying to have a nation-state but without a nation. The American nation has been dismantled, and we've attempted to replace it with some kind of impersonal, neutral framework of rules and procedures. I think this is doomed to fail, because a nation is fundamentally a moral project. Without a shared set of values, customs, symbols, and traditions, we are not a people. We are merely too atomized to work together cooperatively towards a common vision."

"The elite, by contrast, are united. United in their interests and united by a shared urban cosmopolitan culture. Unmoored by tradition and motivated by their own sense of entitlement and self-importance. Elitism is the rule of a disorganized majority by an organized minority. They run the bureaucracies, the media, the universities, the financial institutions, the major multinational corporations, the arms industry, the think tanks, the policy=planning committees, etc. They move seamlessly between the board rooms, the news rooms, and the West Wing. By just focusing on national elections every couple of years, we can never solve that problem."

I agree with all of that, J. Farmer. I read it and I recognize that as being true.

Now I don't read every comment on every thread. And there are many threads are I never even open. And sometimes I get quite irritated about something you have said.

But I have read what seems like many of your comments, even if it is only 10% of what you have written. And you're knowledgeable about a great many things, and that is great. You are very critical of quite a few of the many beliefs that various people on the right tend to have. It's not all one thing of course, although I'm not sure how clearly you see that. So that's fine. And that is part of having a discussion -- the different views.

But what I don't recall seeing is you stating what it is that you think we should do. I try to guess at where you are coming from -- what else can I do -- since you don't directly state what you are for.

I've gotten the message loud and clear that you don't think we should be involved in wars in other countries -- like for instance protecting Taiwan from China. But that does nothing really to address the issues you so ably state above.

It's my first full winter (so far) out of the Midwest in about 50 year. I'd see visions like that pic all the time. In the Twin Cities we used to call the area,"the upper midwest" (thanks WCCO weather). My wife and I were supposed to move out west before last winter, but we had to change our plans, so that we could move out west right at the start of the Covid disaster. Really messed up timing, but it worked. We left on March 3rd. I think if we'd put it off another 2 weeks we might not have been able to move.

Anyways, I've really wanted to put the midwest winter scene behind me for a while -maybe forever. It's cool here now, but not cold. Just saw that some of our plants like the rosemary bush are still doing fine. It's a nice change. Maybe kinda miss skating on a pond or a lake from time to time, but not that much . . . . . Defiantly don't miss icy sidewalks!

There's something strange about how we can identify our emotional states with the external environment -- and have the sense that nature speaks to us. This photograph represents what I would call our current collective state -- the pits. Of course thanks to Ann's sunrise project we all know that the scene is not permanent. So there is hope for better days.

I was just thinking about the explanation I heard given why Congressional leaders Pelosi et al when informed of the increased threat level, refused additional forces on 1/6/21 -- because they didn't like the optics. They didn't like the image of them certifying the electoral college votes surrounded by massive armed forces. It gives the image of an election that was not free and fair. When you consider that there will be 20K troops to guard the freely elected President's inauguration -- that photograph perfectly expresses my reaction to this situation in our nation.

Why is there not more conversation on what can be done to clean up our election processes? We can't change what happened, we have to insure this doesn't happen again.

05) Dollar amount of property damage.
06) Number of protesters hospitalized and/or injured by the police

I find it suspicious, but not odd :) At this point it is clear that the press promotes a propaganda narrative and has no interest in "news". It is difficult to find out what actually happened during any event. The press is always at a disadvantage in such situations because they seldom know much about what they are reporting on, but it seems they have given up entirely and dedicated themselves to the easier task of repeating talking points.

Meanwhile, the Center-right says zilch about Ashli Babbitt,

Center (i.e. conservative) and right (i.e. libertarian) do not conduct witch hunts, hold warlock trials, or generally "protest". They're waiting for and expect due process to clear the "fog of war". The "fog of war" that socially justified the summary abortion of Ashli Babbitt. They hold diverse (i.e. numerical) assemblies; get painted by the Fourth Estate, the Virtual Estate, and em-pathetic or merely pathetic special and peculiar interests; get dismissed; get cancelled; then this process is reduced, reused, and recycled by their competing interests, domestic and foreign.

Case-in-point: Kyle Rittenhouse flashes white-power sign at bar while out on bond

Wearing a T-shirt reading “Free as F–k,” Rittenhouse was serenaded with the Proud Boys anthem, “Proud of Your Boy” — and then repeatedly made the “OK” sign, which has been “co-opted as a symbol of white supremacy/ white power” and used by neo-Nazis and the KKK, prosecutors alleged.

The Nazis were leftists of "Jew privilege", "selective-Jew" (the "final solution"), and redistributive change fame, but not all leftists are Nazis. The Democrat-affiliated KKK operated a fascist racket, occupying businesses, invading neighborhoods, intimidating people... persons to force them to kneel. Diversity [dogma] (i.e. color judgment), not limited to racism, is a progressive condition that denies individual dignity, individual conscience, intrinsic value, normalizes color quotas, color blocs, and affirmative discrimination. #HateLovesAbortion (the "wicked solution")

You see that I would be altogether mad

If you have learned to lie from him,

Are you afraid of hurting me? You are wrong.
The only hurt would be not to know.
Where is the danger in knowing? One man and many women --
Heracles has had other women before.
Never yet has one earned insults
from me, or spiteful talk, nor will she, even
if she is absorbed in her passion.
for I pitied her deeply when I saw her because
her own beauty has destroyed her life, and, against her will,
this unfortunate girl has sacked and enslaved the land

For I have taken on a girl -- no,
I can think that no longer -- a married woman, as
a ship's master takes on cargo, goods that outrage my heart.
So now the two of us lie under the one sheet,
waiting for his embrace. This is the gift my brave

Because Trumpkins aren’t sincere. I made several suggestions, and pointed out how Canada does it. A bunch of Trumpkins, like Big Mike, told me that they don’t need to learn anything about running elections from Canada. They let their resentments rule. So of course if even they won’t take the issue seriously how can possibly hope to get Democrats to?

MountainMan said...

Ken B you are under the assumption the Democrats want to fix the voting problems. They don't. Their H. R. 1 bill is going to take what we just went through in WI, MI, PA, and especially GA national and make it Federal law. Go read the summary at Heritage I linked above Would you like to have those changes made to Canada's voting laws? Most Republican districts and Republican dominated state don't have any voting problem. I vote in the most Republican congressional district in America, populated with what the elites think are a bunch of dumb hillbillies, and in the 30 years I've lived there we've never had a problem, not one. Same for the whole state of TN, even corrupt Memphis.

Remember the names Marc Elias and Stacy Abrams. They made the mess and among the Democrats they are now considered heroes for what they did to the election.

And Marc Elias is an attorney with Perkins Core law firm. Where have we heard that before? Oh, that's right, the Russian collusion hoax. And he was right in the middle of that, too.

There will be no civil war. Consider the fall of the Soviet Union. Like the other great European Empires, the Soviet Union imploded the weight of its ethnic problems. There were too many ethnic, national, cultural and religious components. Too much diversity. I think our open borders will drive us to a similar fate. But there is hope. When the USSR disbanded, there was very little violence and none of the cataclysmic consequences promised by the "experts." So if we disband, we'll just go our separate ways.

Isn't amazing though? The Soviet Union survived two devastating wars, famines involving millions of deaths and a rapid, brutal industrialization. Stalin even annihilated a couple million more. But in the end, the Ukrainians, Estonians, etc., just couldn't stand the Russians.

American Thinker and contributors Andrea Widburg, R.D. These pieces rely on discredited sources who have peddled debunked theories about Dominion’s supposed ties to Venezuela, fraud on Dominion’s machines that resulted in massive vote switching or weighted votes, and other claims falsely stating that there is credible evidence that Dominion acted fraudulently.

These statements are completely false and have no basis in fact. Industry experts and public officials alike have confirmed that Dominion conducted itself appropriately and that there is simply no evidence to support these claims.

It was wrong for us to publish these false statements. We apologize to Dominion for all of the harm this caused them and their employees. So It Sort Of Looks Like The MyPillow Guy Might Be Trying To Get Trump To Stage One Last Coup Attempt

@jabinbotsford

@MyPillowUSA
CEO Michael Lindell shows off his notes before going into the West Wing at the White House on Friday.

"...It has all the makings of a bona fide, old-school, it-can’t-happen-here power grab, the stuff of nightmares. And it’s being orchestrated by … an infomercial salesman. Who, on his way into the Oval Office to meet with the president of the United States, inadvertently made his notes visible to photographers.

The MyPillow coup is the perfect ending to Trump’s presidency in that it’s deeply sinister and completely absurd all at once. It’s of a piece with everything that’s happened since Election Day. You worry, then you feel embarrassed for worrying, then you remember that he could be capable of anything. Could the president conspire with a guy who sells pillows for a living to end the United States as we know it? No! Well … maybe. I mean, no, of course not! But it would be destabilizing if they even tried, and they could try…"

Only at the bottom of the article does AlahPundit reveal that:

'...After meeting with Trump, Lindell said he was ushered upstairs to share details of election fraud with White House lawyers…

The lawyers said they had looked into the claims, Lindell said, and described them as “very dismissive.”'

He added, “They have their own agenda.”

Seems kinda legit, unless these beaded bracelets are common, or photos are doctored.
Link also claims this officer has Facebook posts expressing violent intent toward Trump supporters, but provides no link.

A search of the officers name brings up 'FactCheck' which attacks the source of the info-a definite right winger- as proof that the identity is false.

In Norway, they stopped coronavirus vaccines on old people because the vaccines killed the old people at the same rate as actual coronavirus did.

That means that, if you think of the awful side effects that do not kill those who are not old, the coronavirus vaccines used in Norway ---- granted not a country full of intelligent and informed people, but still a modern country ---- such side effects are as likely or not as prevalent after a vaccine as they are after getting the coronavirus.

And Norway is a very liberal, pro-Bill Gates country. It took courage for the government to stop vaccinating (and killing) old people with the vaccine.

I agree with Clancy. I thought Patriot Games was a decent film until the third act when they ditched Jack Ryan for Indiana Jones. The whole appeal of Ryan is that he's more of a cerebral, analytical guy than a kickass action star. The boat chase looked even more tired and lame compared to the earlier scene that depicted the raid on the village via satellite imagery.

Although I preferred Baldin's Ryan to Ford's, Clear and Present Danger is still my favorite film in the franchise. My father, though, thinks any choice other than Hunt For Red October is insane.

No real testing, no long-term follow-ups, possible permanent deleterious effects on fertility, and on top of all that, most public health officers say you shouldn't even stop wearing a mask after you take it.

*******************
I think this is the source you saw, posted today:

https://nypost.com/2021/01/15/23-die-in-norway-after-receiving-pfizer-covid-19-vaccine/

"Twenty-three people died in Norway within days of receiving their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, with 13 of those deaths — all nursing home patients — apparently related to the side effects of the shots, health officials said."

"All 13 were nursing home patients and at least 80 years old. While officials aren’t expressing serious concern, they are adjusting their guidance on who should receive the vaccine.

The news comes just over a week after officials reported the deaths of just two nursing home residents after they received the Pfizer jab.

More than 30,000 people in Norway have received the first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccine in the Scandinavian country since late last month, according to official figures.

“We are not alarmed by [the 13 deaths],” Steinar Madsen, medical director with the agency, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. “It is quite clear that these vaccines have very little risk, with a small exception for the frailest patients.”

“Doctors must now carefully consider who should be vaccinated,” he added. “Those who are very frail and at the very end of life can be vaccinated after an individual assessment.”

So....cooper has engaged in unwarranted extrapolations. If the Pfizer vaccine is so unsafe, we should be seeing a sharp rise in deaths among elderly Americans who have received it.

Have we?

DavidUW said...

And the point is not - will it kill me if I am 60 ---- the point is, if it kills people who are 85 at the same rate as the coronavirus itself does (an unexpected result, but that is what science is about - observing unexpected results), then it (the vaccine) may (note, I say may) have similar negative effects in younger cohorts as the coronavirus itself.

In other words, if the Norwegian numbers hold up, the vaccines we are now using will basically do no more than get us to herd immunity faster but with just as much morbidity and side effects as the disease itself.

I'm ready to turn the page on the Trump era and see what horrors await us next.

Yes that would have been taken 20 years early it might have required a frankenheiner

SO .... if the Norwegian numbers are not an anomaly (and the Norwegian health authorities took the numbers very seriously), then you, as an individual, are taking the exact same risks by getting the vaccine as you would if you just French kissed someone who was shedding the viruses at a sufficient rate to ensure you would get infected (absent a presence of antibodies in your body).

True, you may think you are "getting it over with" by taking the vaccine, but there is another twist. What if later this year you get a mutation which the vaccine does not cover? Then your entire risk (against the non-mutated vaccine) did you no good at all. It is not undisputed that the current vaccines cover the current rare mutations, and there is no way any scientist can claim that future mutations will be covered. That is not how science has ever worked (and that is why, historically, flu vaccines are much less than 90 percent effective in most flu seasons).

@stephen cooper:

the point is, if it kills people who are 85 at the same rate as the coronavirus itself does (an unexpected result, but that is what science is about - observing unexpected results)

This was the claim I was asking for a source to. I'm not saying you're wrong only that I had not seen that particular piece of information.

I am reminded of the Progressive Insurance commercial with the expert on preventing people from turning out like their parents.

"You know who else reads books about submarines?"

[Hesitant, embarrassed response] "My dad."

My dad loved Tom Clancy's books. I didn't read the books and wasn't that crazy about the movies, though "The Hunt for Red October" was pretty good.

"Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," which Clancy wasn't responsible for, was abysmal. If Putin was looking for reasons to hate us, that movie would have been enough.

Come to think of it, wasn't Rose Nylund, Betty White's dingbat character on Golden Girls, supposed to be Norwegian?

Pretty wild that her previous role had been as Sue Ann Nivens, the sexpot "Happy Homemaker" of WJM on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Fourteen million Modera doses shipped, fifteen million Pfizer doses shipped - but only 12.3 million arm sticks. Trump's "Operation Warp Speed" was, like most of his daydreams, a massive failure.

He is not the most reliable guy, but he usually retracts his statements pretty quickly if he is obviously incorrect, and he has not retracted those statements yet.

Of course it is possible that, Norwegians being Norwegians, they jabbed the very sickest of the old people first. Which could explain the anomaly.

What will happen is that the Democrats will go into what they think is their safe area for the inauguration - behind protective barbed wire snd defensive troops, and then in a switch find themselves captured! Well, it would be good for a comedy movie.

No. I assume the Democrats, the party, do NOT want to fix things so you need a strategy to appeal past them that will embarrass them if they reject it. And that strategy is “be like Canada”. That strategy seems well with Democrat voters. Make the appeal to the voters and force the Democrat party to confront it. It might not work, but it’s more likely to work than anything Big Mike suggests.

1. Kinda pervy for a 10 year old
2. Good thing you didn’t ask for King's Row
3. I never got any flack for anything I ever wanted to read growing up. Only in recent years.
4 I read Myra Breckinridge when I was 11. Kinda pervy.

Maybe Cuomo could explain it...

Isn't Trump's fault that WI Governor Evers is a Democrat.

Another problem facing providers is they can’t give the vaccine to anyone. Only first responders and nursing home residents and staff are currently eligible.

Some providers say they have more doses than people who are on the eligibility list and want the vaccine, according to Rep. Joe Sanfelippo, Assembly Health Committee Chairman. Those providers cannot simply start giving the extra vaccine doses to people lower on the priority list, because DHS is still trying to figure out who should be on that list.

DHS gave the job of creating an eligibility list to its 12-member State Disaster Medical Advisory Committee (SDMAC), which in turn handed it over to its 17-member vaccine subcommittee.

DHS started talking about creating the subcommittee in early October when it first faced up to the possibility that “DHS will have responsibility for developing an effective and equitable strategy for distributing vaccine to Wisconsin residents.”

The first several weeks were spent selecting members, developing a framework for equitable distribution, and taking public comment. On December 10th, it settled on what groups of people should get the vaccine first, during “Phase 1A.” That list includes first responders and nursing home staff and residents. That was just in the nick of time. The FDA approved emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine on Dec. 11th. The first vaccines were administered in Wisconsin on Dec. 14th. Moderna’s vaccine was approved on Dec. 18th.

The vaccine subcommittee then got to work on the eligibility list for “Phase 1B.” It completed a preliminary list ready for public comment on Jan. 12th. It includes everyone over the age of 70, state prison inmates, and workers in the mink fur industry. That same day, the federal government told states to open up vaccinations to everyone over the age of 65.

California is 2nd to last despite having a stockpile. Massive bureacracy, locations operating 1 day a week, "equity" factors.
I'm sure it's figuring into Newsom recall efforts.

Our internet was down from Tuesday evening until noon today (Pacific). What a nice break it has been. Living in a pretty peaceful small city in Pierce county - not much going on IRL. A co-worker is all worried about our safety due to riots. Please. I may just shut the damn router and wifi unit off from time to time.
