"Why Are So Many Latinos Obsessed With Demonizing Black Lives Matter? It's Complicated."

This is an article from October 5th — at WLRN (the Miami NPR affiliate) — that begins "Joe Biden is expected to win the Latino vote big. But not so big in Florida." With hindsight, we know that the big Latino vote win did not happen. There was, in fact, puzzling drop in Latino voter support for Democrats. Let's mine this article for some clues about why that happened. Remember, this is public radio:
Many Latinos who back President Trump bring the racial — and racist — complexities of Latin America to their attacks on the racial justice movement....
[T]his summer many Latinos started to loudly express contempt for — and falsehoods about — the Black Lives Matter (BLM) racial justice movement. For months, Latinos for Trump rallies — like one in Miami Lakes where an organizer shouted BLM “wants to tear down the Biblical definition of family!” — have been trumpeting bogus claims about the movement being anti-American.
And then there are the really racist diatribes on Spanish-language media — like one disgorged recently by conservative Miami radio host Carines Moncada, a Venezuelan expat. On her show on WURN Actualidad Radio — a mainstream Spanish-language outlet –—Moncada told listeners, “Black Life Matters practices lo negro — witchcraft and devil worship — and wants to burn down your property and kill police officers.” She then added that a vote for Biden “supports that rape and anarchy.”
Moncada did not respond to WLRN’s request for comment. But her demonizing rant against Black Lives Matter is not uncommon in South Florida — although it often has more to do with socialism than Satan. Like, for example, when Republican congressional candidate Maria Elvira Salazar tears into BLM. Salazar, a Cuban-American, is a former TV journalist challenging Democratic Miami Congresswoman Donna Shalala.

Of course, we know now that Maria Elvira Salazar beat Donna Shalala.

[Salazar] regularly and falsely claims that Black Lives Matter controls Biden and the Democrats — and has turned them into “radical far-left socialists” like those in Cuba or Venezuela. Salazar’s so-called “evidence” is that a BLM co-founder once had her picture taken with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in New York. But she insists that’s sufficient “prueba,” or proof....
“Miami has been the place where I’ve been made most aware of being Black — by fellow Latinos,” says Danielle Clealand, a Black Latina who says she’s found many White Latinos in Miami will not speak Spanish with her because they don’t accept her, “as one of them.” Clealand now teaches Latino Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, but until this fall she taught at FIU in Miami-Dade for almost a decade. Clealand is a Black Puerto Rican, but her research — including an upcoming oral history — focuses on the Black Cuban experience in Miami and the U.S.
She says the Latino attacks on Black Lives Matter don’t surprise her — because while racism runs deep in Latin America, Black activism is all too often an unsettling shock for many Latin American expats here. More, even, than for many racist White Americans.
“Racism is hidden in Latin America to maintain the status quo,” says Clealand. “And so when you come here and you see, particularly now, Black activism in the streets, people cannot hide from it anymore. When you are confronted with this it creates a negative and racist reaction.”
Clealand also notes that because Latino groups in Miami experienced discrimination themselves when they first arrived here, they believe that gives them a pass from being accused of anti-Black racism. “It emboldens them to think they could never be racist,” Clealand says. “The denialism is huge.”
Another FIU scholar, Michael Bustamante, says it’s also “a deflection to label Black Lives Matter Marxist, communist.” Bustamante, a Cuban-American history professor, says branding Black activism as “communist” is how many Latino expats avoid having to acknowledge the similarities between their struggles in Latin America and Black Americans’ struggles here....
“A lot of the people who were galvanized by the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela were darker-skinned, poorer folks,” says Venezuelan expat political analyst Maurizio Passariello....
ADDED: Here's an NBC article from last June that explores the same theme: "Latinos must confront 'ingrained' anti-black racism amid George Floyd protests, some urge/White-presenting Latinos should use this time to reconcile with their privilege and acknowledge that black people are already part of their community, said a young Afro-Latinx."  Excerpt:
Jasmine Haywood, an Afro-Latina who has researched anti-black Latino racism, told NBC News.... "What Latinos need to realize is that our oppression is bound up and intertwined with the oppression of the black community... Until they are liberated, until they are free from injustices and oppression, we will never be liberated." Haywood said anti-blackness sentiments are "ingrained in our cultures"...

While Latinos largely acknowledge their ethnicity and African roots — dating to Latin America's colonial period, when mixing occurred among indigenous people, white Europeans, slaves from Africa and Asians — many still struggle to consider themselves as black.

In Pew's survey, 39 percent of Afro-Latinos identified as white, while only 18 percent identified as black; even more Afro-Latinos (24 percent) said their race was "Hispanic" — which is an ethnicity, not a race....

Julio Ricardo Varela, founder of Futuro Media's Latino Rebels and a white-presenting Latino himself, thinks it is crucial that Latinos recognize racism in their histories, not just as a U.S. issue. "White-passing Latinos really need to come to terms with their privilege in the context of anti-blackness," whether they were born in the U.S., Latin America or the Caribbean, and they "need to just accept the reality that we also come from a racist society that is embedded in white supremacy," Varela said....

Not really. Most folks that don't have a vested interest in portraying BLM as cross between a church choir and a team of firemen saving kittens from apartment fires, can see [with their lying eyes] that BLM are a racist gang of thugs at best and a terrorist organization at worst.

And yes, BLM® is racist, Marxist garbage that aims to replace the family with the state, and throw out God in the process...

The BLM Movement is trying to shove its agenda regarding the family under the rug and has modified its website to tone it down.

Here's what the BLM Global Network said about the family on its webiste as recently as September of 2020:

Four years ago, what is now known as the Black Lives Matter Global Network began to organize. It started out as a chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission was to build local power and to intervene when violence was inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.

In the years since, we’ve committed to struggling together and to imagining and creating a world free of anti-Blackness, where every Black person has the social, economic, and political power to thrive.

... [I had to cut it to get the word count down to post it]

The Black Lives Matter Global Network is as powerful as it is because of our membership, our partners, our supporters, our staff, and you. Our continued commitment to liberation for all Black people means we are continuing the work of our ancestors and fighting for our collective freedom because it is our duty.

Every day, we recommit to healing ourselves and each other, and to co-creating alongside comrades, allies, and family a culture where each person feels seen, heard, and supported.

We acknowledge, respect, and celebrate differences and commonalities.

We work vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension, all people.

We intentionally build and nurture a beloved community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting.

We are unapologetically Black in our positioning. In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position. To love and desire freedom and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others.

We see ourselves as part of the global Black family, and we are aware of the different ways we are impacted or privileged as Black people who exist in different parts of the world.

We are guided by the fact that all Black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location.

We make space for transgender brothers and sisters to participate and lead.

We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.

We build a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered.

We practice empathy. We engage comrades with the intent to learn about and connect with their contexts.

We make our spaces family-friendly and enable parents to fully participate with their children. We dismantle the patriarchal practice that requires mothers to work “double shifts” so that they can mother in private even as they participate in public justice work.

We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.

We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).

We cultivate an intergenerational and communal network free from ageism. We believe that all people, regardless of age, show up with the capacity to lead and learn.

We embody and practice justice, liberation, and peace in our engagements with one another.

How can it be a "deflection" to hold BLM to be Marxist when BLM itself has claimed to be Marxist? And the "Bolivarian revolution" in Venezuela isn't so nifty for the poor and darker-skinned any more, is it? Chavez and Maduro were/are themselves light-skinned, and the only people still eating decently in Venezuela are the military and the extremely rich. I understand that former Venezuelan professionals have occasionally relearned sewing, to take in the seams of other people's garments when they have lost too much weight due to malnutrition to wear them properly any more.

As for the "Biblical family" bit, that is doubtless about a BLM document that, among other things, declared war on the "nuclear family" as "white," advocating a return to extended kin networks of the "it takes a village" sort. I believe they have now officially withdrawn this, but it was out there for a time. And they aren't the only ones pushing it, either.

Since I lack an Ivy league diploma, no contact with coastal elites, precious little exposure to critical race theory, this is where I get crossed up. I have read fact sheets from those mentioned above, and told that only those with power can possibly be racist. since minorities have no power, no matter what they express or do. Immigrants from Cuba lack power, hence cant be racist. Right?

Ummmm... maybe it's because the "official" BLM site actually did state Marxist positions. One of their founders also stated they were "trained as Marxists". BLM pushes Critical Race Theory, which is Marxian.

Maybe Bustamante doesn't like being correctly identified as Marxist because it reduces support?

Only if you buy into that absurd "people of color" taxonomy. It is an attempt to group very disparate peoples into a category of non-white, with the idea that a common experience of racism and bigotry would unite them in an effort to stop "white supremacy." Unfortunately, people of color have a bad habit of noticing what white people notice: that there's a tremendous amount of disorder in the black community. If we were to have a racial binary in our country, black vs non-black would be much more cohesive than white vs non-white.

As already stated....Latino is too broad of a term. To assume that all people from who speak Spanish or come from Latin countries are the same is to assume wrongly.

However, from my own experience........ (growing up in California surrounded by Mexicans and ethnic groups of all kinds, having family that lived in Mexico as legal residents for 30 year, relatives by marriage from Mexico, Argentina, being friends and colleges with the many Mexican immigrants in our local area)..... most "Hispanics" are hardworking, family orientated, religious, conservative types and who have come from or have relatives who have come from Socialist and corrupt countries. They want freedom, law and order and morality.

They know how bad it is in a corrupt country. They don't like the illegals and gangs who are flooding into their neighborhoods and who are taking away their very jobs. They don't like BLM who are rioting and destroying their neighborhoods. They also don't like the poor me victim hood attitude that BLM promotes.

Everything the Democrats stand for is anathema to them. They LEFT those circumstances and don't want to see it again.

It is no surprise that "hispanics" voted for Trump.

No, but it makes many of them think, "If I could succeed, why can't they? Why am I supposed to privilege their problems?" One of Steve Sailer's many heterodox theories is that non-black minorities feel that blacks want to be the number one minority, the one whose concerns matter more than any other's. They don't like that. They also don't like what many see as blacks expecting all non-whites to look up to blacks for leadership.

This goes along with his theory that many non-black non-whites will vote Republican if they see the Democrats as "the black people's party" (the way many blacks see Republicans as "the white people's party").

https://nypost.com/2020/09/24/blm-removes-website-language-blasting-nuclear-family-structure/

Black Lives Matter scrubbed a page on its website this week that disparaged the “Western-prescribed nuclear family structure,” prompting a former NFL lineman to blast critics who accused him of previously misinterpreting the organization’s incendiary message.

The group, whose co-founder Patrisse Cullors has described herself and fellow co-founder Alicia Garza as “trained Marxists,” removed a page titled “What We Believe” that included its public policy positions as well as describing itself as part of the “global Black family” — a change first reported Monday by the Washington Examiner.

Not that there isn't inhuman courage and self-sacrifice in the second cases.

To be treated as incompetent--without democrats' guidance--ne'er do wells may well be galling. Especially to those whose grip on the bootstraps is paying off.

Also GOP in House and state races may have benefitted from Gerrymandering.

Democrats benefitted from gerrymandering for 200 years without a complaint. The second Reps used it they began claiming it's a threat to the Republic.

Typical.

[Salazar] regularly and falsely claims that Black Lives Matter controls Biden and the Democrats — and has turned them into “radical far-left socialists”

I doubt this is true. The claim is generally that BLM beliefs are mainstream among Dems (is there any question about this>) and thus are a reflection of what Dems really believe. Consider how the writer changed the accusation -perhaps in his own mind - to ensure it could be asserted false.

The Prime Directive is to Protect the Blue Shield.

Which Latinos are you talking about?
the article points a lot of things out but misses the elephant in the room: Behavior.
My Colombian born son became "racist" when he joined the Job Corps and found the black kids smoked pot, didn't do their job, picked on the Hispanics and whites, and never got punished.
BLM is increasing racism in the hearts of many outside the upper class elites...

Contrary to the worldview of woke whites, the world is not all about them and not split into white versus not white.

I just heard them go to Barak Obama for a quote about the current political situation. That's the fourth of fifth time they've done that today. Why aren't they going to Biden or Harris for quotes?

It was rhetorical, I know. But it's because Biden is incoherent unless he gets some Adderall, and Harris leaves the audience cringing with her cackle and her insincerity.

Oh, it's much simpler than that. Obama has a new book out, and the many interviews are calculated to increase sales. Biden and Harris are both between books :-)

The Pinot-sipping, Chardonnay-charlatan white folks at a Miami public radio station said...

"'Why Are So Many Latinos Obsessed With Demonizing Black Lives Matter? It's Complicated.
This is an article from October 5th — at WLRN (the Miami NPR affiliate) — that begins 'Joe Biden is expected to win the Latino vote big. But not so big in Florida.'
"

So, Viva La Raza, NPR...unless they don't march in lockstep with what passes for racial justice and "equality". Amazing that Egghead Radio doesn't consider things from the Latino perspective. Or for that matter, from any viewpoint that is not Black. Racism is colorblind. It ain't only white folks who are...hmmm...what would our betters say?...bigots.

I mean, the BLM org DOES want to end "the biblical definiton of the family" since they're an LGBT org.

And I bet they have more Voudoun practitioners than Roman Catholics and Baptists.

It isn't difficult to figure out why Florida Cubans don't like BLM. Black Lives Matter Founder an Open Supporter of Socialist Venezuelan Dictator Maduro.

“There is an overwhelming sense of loss, complicated by fear and anxiety. Although no leader is without their flaws, we must push back against the rhetoric of the right and come to the defense of El Comandante,” a eulogy by the official “Black Lives Matter” organization read.
After some thoughts on revolution, the piece ends: “As Fidel ascends to the realm of the ancestors, we summon his guidance, strength, and power as we recommit ourselves to the struggle for universal freedom. Fidel Vive!”

The friend of my enemy is my enemy, and a BLM website published a rather flattering eulogy of Fidel Castro.
