"It really does feel like Biden himself is almost the best candidate for this moment because of who he is as a person and his ability to talk about racial justice and racial equality in a way that sounds like a traditional white, suburban guy."

"He doesn’t particularly sound woke, but you also understand that he gets it and that he’s trying to look at these problems in a realistic way."

Said Vaughn Derderian, the chair of the Democratic Party in Oakland County, Michigan, quoted in "Why Biden could still lose the suburbs to Trump/Among local party officials, there’s an undercurrent of uneasiness about how quickly the president shifted the focus of the campaign away from his coronavirus response and toward public safety" (Politico).
Biden said of the public’s response to Trump’s law-and-order posturing last week that “they ain't buying it.” And most Democratic political professionals — and some Republicans – believe that’s probably true at the moment. Frank Luntz, the veteran Republican consultant and pollster, said in an email that Trump “is talking about the right issue, but he's talking the wrong way. Suburban voters want ‘public safety’ even more than law and order. They want ‘safe streets’ rather than ‘dominating the streets.’ His rhetoric is over-caffeinated.”
People always say Trump is "talking the wrong way." He was talking the wrong way in 2016, and then he won. Talking the wrong way is Trump's super power. The question isn't whether people will say Trump is talking the wrong way, but whether, in the end, they'll vote for him, and they voted for him in 2016 when he talked the wrong way, and I assume they'll do it again. Who cares what's "probably true at the moment"?!

Which is more important, the right issue or the right words?

Trump knows the answer.

These "political professionals" need to spend less time talking among themselves and more time talking to real voters.

So maybe he could explain whether Biden wants the looters and arsonists in jail, or does he agree with Harris that they should be bailed out as quickly as possible to get right back to the violence.

It was Democrats who took over the news cycle with these riots, and it’s Democrats supporting them. They handed this to Trump.

Biden still hasn’t clarified whether he thinks travel bans are racist, as he said back in March, or is it that Trump didn’t do them soon enough. Or whether his is for fracking as he said, or against fracking, as he said. There is a lot of material for reporters asking him questions to work with. Too bad most of the reporters have been removed and all we have now are pro-infragovernment regime propagandists.

In the previous thread, I pointed to the quote by Lincoln about Grant: "I can't spare this man, he fights!" I think that it applies to Trump.

I expect that Trump will tweak his messaging here. Shouldn’t be too hard to tie dominating the streets to public safety, esp with the Biden/Harris ticket encouraging the violent rioting (by, for example, bailing out the violent rioters and arsonists). It doesn’t matter what Biden actually says here, since he is too far gone to be making this sort of decision on his own. Everyone knows that he is just a mouthpiece these days, which is why he can reverse himself in the same short speech, and no one blinks. Harris though has been encouraging the violent rioters and arsonists, and that is being used to tie the violence to their campaign.

Biden is an empty vessel, way past his "sell by" date and being run by a faceless cabal funded by the insanely rich tech people. It's interesting to speculate on their motives. Some may be the guilt and self hate of the trust fund baby. Some, like former Republicans Meg Whitman, are probably about a combination of China and H1B visa matter. Some are widows and ex-wives, like Bezos ex-wife.

I suspect China is a lot of it.

I wouldn't say "almost the best candidate" is a ringing endorsement. And talking about how issues are talked about, that's so white. I looked for a picture of him and Derderian is white (at least based on the American color palette identifier these days).

In 2016 Trump was running against Hillary and while he "talked wrong" a lot, it possibly didn't hurt him as much as it might have because she is so loathsome. I find Joe Biden loathsome as well but I'm not sure (that for other people) he will evoke the same visceral response as Hillary does when it gets down to voting one way or the other. 2020, it's not the same, the GOP can't hope to win just by re-fighting the last war, although it does seem as though the Democrats are using many of the same tactics as they did in 2016.

Here's a poll of Althouse readers having to do with our hostess noting that Trump WON in 2016. How many people do you know, especially in swing states, who

A) Said they voted for Trump in 2016, but now say they will vote for Biden.
B) Said they voted for Trump in 2016, but now say they will not vote or vote third party.
C) Said they didn't vote in 2016, but now say they will vote for Biden.

I know no one in categories A, B, or C. Do you? Seems like Biden needs a good number of these. In the other direction, how many people do you know who

D) Said they voted for Hillary in 2016, but now say they will vote for Trump.
E) Said they didn't vote in 2016 or voted third party, but now say they will vote for Trump.

I know one person in E, who didn't vote because he was too young in 2016. Biden also needs not too many of these.

What these people are saying is we want public safety, but we don't want what it takes to get it. This is what prevents most needed things from getting done. If you have a better way of getting safe streets without using real police then tell us what that is, and how that would work better, if at all.

What I'm hearing is coward talk, the talk of bystanders, failures, and armchair quarterbacks. Real leaders don't just promise you benefits without costs, cold fusion, or pollution-free energy. They convince you that the benefits are worth the cost, and that the cost can be controlled. If you are promising cost-free progress you are promising failure, which we have seen over and over from the left with socio-economic policy, and the right with military expedition. The people are at fault here for accepting such bullshit, and not insisting on being talked to like adults.

Biden is a candidate for people who want to vote against Trump. He is not a candidate that anyone can honestly vote for in my opinion.

He has never lead. So how can he lead the country? I note he voted for the War in Iraq. Bad idea. He voted for DOMA. Bad idea. He voted for DADT. Bad idea. He voted for Criminial Sentencing laws that were draconian and very much anti-Black. Now, perhaps you might argue, if you're a Democrat, that he was simply going for something -- like DADT -- as a way to help move things along. That would gain traction if you could also find footage of him actively saying something like that -- but you can't. He's never gotten out in front of an issue and led the Country to a better point. The only thing I can think of his leading the charge on is against Anita Hill.

This is a man who has marinated for nearly 5 decades in the DC swamp. How on Earth did Democrats decide this was the best Candidate? When was the last time such a confirmed Democratic Swamp-dweller ran as the Party Standard-Bearer? I honestly can't think of anyone. The Democratic Party disgusts me at the moment.

Public safety is a goal. Law and order is how you typically get to the goal (there are other ways: like armed neighborhood patrols and carrying personal firearms).

People have begun to notice the collapse of public safety (an estimated 570 violent “protests” in 220 different locations so far this year, almost all since Saint George Floyd OD’d on camera). They respond to this collapse by asking where the HELL the police have gone; upon being told by the Democrats that the police are all evil violent racists who need a total overhaul, people adjust their personal strategies and go buy guns. There are, I am told, record numbers of new gun owners. Millions of them. Firearms suppliers are sold out. Ammunition is impossible to find.

Let me hazard the guess that of the new gun owners (many of them suburbanites, at least some of them women) not all will vote Democrat. No, not even after Biden reassures them that he, too, has a shotgun somewhere.

Is this really surprising? Biden is barely campaigning. When's the last time something Biden did or said set the agenda for the day?

The coronavirus is a huge issue, and Biden can do well in the polls by being an essentially passive alternative to the status quo. But presidential campaigns usually feature more than one issue, and you can't be the passive recipient of public discontent on all of them.

People have been rioting for 100 days now. On how many of those days have we been talking about the Biden Plan for stopping the rioting? Or the Biden Plan for reforming the police, if that's the angle he wants to take?

A presidential campaign is highly time limited, and Biden has been invisible since March.

I don't know how Oakland County is going to go. But I do have a friend there who is a long time Democrat voter who texted me a photo of a sign on her lawn. It's a Blue Lives Matter sign. She's a critical care worker. She deals with police that save peoples lives every day. She's tired of the BS going on in this country. She's never put up a political flavored sign in her yard- ever. Until now. (ps- she voted for Hillary last time. She's voting for Trump this time.)

Interestingly, I've seen some Blue Lives Matter signs around me in Florida as well. I suspect there's a helluva backlash brewing.

That said, I know there are both die-hard Dems and Repubs in Oakland Co. If they're like the rest of the nation, most will vote as they always do. It'll come down to a few- like my friend- who change their minds this time around. But do not confuse these people with independents. Those are a different category. This election will see numbers of people crossing the line to be where they never saw themselves previously.

Woke and drowsy. Woke implies a denial or fluid principles when it is deemed to be politically congruent. Diversity dogma is a foundational belief of the Pro-Choice quasi-religion ("ethics") of the Progressive Church.

In fact, if I had to guess what upsets a would be Stalinist the most about Trump, it would be Trump's attacking the ChiCom's on all fronts: economic, military and political.

I especially like how Trump is cleverly crafting a strategic cordon around China with increased South Korean and Japanese offensive military capabilities, shifting of supply chains to other asian allies while redirecting all national health care supply chains be returned to the US, forcefully standing up the ChiCom expansion plans in the Spratley Islands (I'll be ARM is still pissed about that for his Beijing buddies), and getting India on board long term with US strategic containment plans.

Gadfly is a painfully stupid human being.

gadfly gets crazier every week. I sometimes wonder if he is just a parody account like Babylon Bee. Most of the other lefties seem to be avoiding the most obvious Democrat lies but not gadfly and, of course, freder and Inga are right on board.

Biden with a 5 point lead in Texas? Seriously? Texas has not gone D since 1976, but Biden was going to flip it?

Maybe if every illegal votes 3 times.

Or is that the plan?

Of course it’s never too late to nominate a well known woman candidate in place of Biden. RBG could run a better campaign with more energy and intelligence than Biden .

Frank Luntz fucking cares, that's who. That's his whole life, focus grouping hot topics and diving wisdom from the opinions of ignoramuses. In fairness, he's occasionally surfaced some suprirsing reactions people have had, but his presumption to speak for the silent majority or common man's perspective is irksome.

Why does anyone bother reading gadfly's DNC propaganda?

He is worse than Chuckles, if not as phony. Like Inga, Freder and steve uhr he just repeats what he is told without any cognitive mediation whatsoever. He has nothing to offer in terms of insight or information. I guess the trolls just want to annoy people.

I would rather discuss topics in a somewhat intelligent manner. The trolls are not equipped for that.

Not quite Vaughn but close enough.

In my family tree I have a Dora Vaughan born 1908 and a Josephine Vaughan born 1980, last names left out. So at least since 1908.

In August of 1988 the New York Times had Michael Dukakis up over HW Bush in Texas by.....10%!!!

So we should always take these polls by the legacy marxist media at face value.

Biden is great if Trump will just stand there and let the media define him like they've done for the last four years.

However, Trump is reentering Campaign Mode, and his OODA loop will get shorter and sharper from here on out.

Biden's OODA loop is, well, approaching infinity. And the press is getting more and more exposed as it tries to make up for his deficiencies.

“The ability to operate at a faster tempo or rhythm than an adversary enables one to fold the adversary back inside himself so that he can neither appreciate nor keep up with what is going on. He will become disoriented and confused…”

"Woke" ??? He's f*@king sleepwalking,

...literally led around by his handlers

And this line:

"It really does feel like Biden himself is almost the best candidate..."

That's just pitiful.
None of that connotes "is actually", and is originating from someone who isnt Biden himself.
This poor campaign hack is straining to cobble together some meager garnish to dress up this thin gruel.

We dont want/need an old, effete, senile, submissive cuck to comply with the frenzied dictates of fascists, at home OR abroad.

Are we not even going to mention that Biden wrote the crime bill that locked up tens (hundreds?) of thousands of young black men for minor crimes? He is the poster fogey for systemic racism.

“Racial jungle”
"You can't go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accen
“I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland... He always called me son.”
“Poor kids” just as bright as “white kids”
“You ain’t black.”
“Predators on our streets”

The dems and the media have chosen a side.

The pictures of antifa criminals harassing restaurant goers are gold for the Trump campaign. Everyone wants CV19 restrictions over, and everyone is hoping the local restaurants will be able to survive so they can enjoy a night out. I'm pretty sure they don't want a bunch of criminals trashing the place while they're eating.
You can even see it from our resident lefties. Attacking the police is OK, but they can't approve the diner disruption. That hits too close to home.

I love it! Keep it up folks. 50 states!

I have a Democrat friend who’s helping with a Democrat’s (and her high school friend) hopeless senate campaign in a red state.

She’s simply descended into sharing talking point as though they’re independent thoughts.

I asked her how intellectually dishonest she has to be with herself in order to support Biden — her response was, “enough to beat Trump.”

"In other words, no different in essence from those who say Trump is anything other than a corrupt bully and narcissist."

Is that really all he is? Your educated, well-read, reasonable mind can't see the man as anything more than that? Buildings and organizations around the world bear his name, and not honorary like a Nobel Peace Prize, earned by risk taking and work. He employs thousands, and has for decades. He reached the top of multiple industries to create those jobs. He presided over the most dynamic economy in the world through the power of deregulation, tax cuts, and the simple promise of a man who understands what works rather than what sounds good. He renegotiated and reset trade and military agreements to the benefit of Americans to a degree missing for decades, while keeping us out of unnecessary military conflicts. He exposed the corruption and dishonesty of our political and media bureaucracies. He did all that in less than 4 years with a singular and uncommon style of personality, strength, and pragmatism that is uniquely his, and your mind sees that as nothing but "a corrupt bully and narcissist"? Can you give us just one way you would have done better with any of that?

I believe that is a fair summary of the Democratic party platform.

Funny that no one has asked Joe about the billions in cash Obama sent to the Iranians, and if he thought that was a good idea.

President Biden will likey send billions to BLM and Antifa, too.... as "community rebuilding" grants.

Right one thing lacking is talk about racism

But it would be swell to have Biden capitulate for the white race

That is what the Antifa insurrection wants - by calling it "white colony" than can replace it with Socialist Utopia

the blacks are just the useful idiots for the midwits

My wife dislikes Trump because of his rude blustering and insulting manner toward others even when they have it coming. (She is a very nice woman). She voted for Hillary but now detests her. She has a friend who is also a very nice woman with a husband who both adored Hillary and still do and will vote for the dotard. They both had careers as education bureaucrats, so that explains everything. My wife and her friend have agreed not to discuss politics. So Trump picks up 25% of the two households over last time. In the microcosm I see a reflection of the macrocosm.

There's barely daylight between the woke ideology on the black experience in America, and the white separatist position from 1865.

It goes like this, "Because of the ravages of slavery, and because European Americans have built a society based on a specific set of values, black Americans will have a very difficult or impossible time assimilating."

The solutions are similar as well, "segregate blacks (as in NYU dormitory proposal), give them a UBI (welfare, reparations, etc.), and encourage the self-annihilation of their offspring (put a planned parenthood clinic on every corner in black neighborhoods)."

That's the problem with elections - especially Presidential elections. We will be bombarded with non-stop propoganda until election day. It's hard for me to read anything in the Press anymore. It's not information which is useful - just 24/7 propoganda from both sides. Well - 'C'est La Vie'!

Many college-educated White suburban guys are for Biden because they don't like Trump. It's certainly like that in the blue states. But they don't "sound like" Biden, and Biden doesn't "sound like" them. He sounds like their fathers or grandfathers (or somebody's father or grandfather).

I'm not sure if that's a plus or minus for Joe. I guess the point was that Biden sounds non-threatening. He certainly doesn't sound like a firebrand or a hot-head, but he doesn't sound like anybody under 70 years old does. Is it really reassuring that he sounds like he's living in the past much of the time?
