My French instructor expressed great surprise at the tone and style of the street brawl/throwdown/debate. Hey, it's America, it's 2020, I said. She asked, are these really the two best choices for your national leader? Hell no, I said, not even close. Well, she wanted to know, how did this happen?

Well, Donald Trump, on a lark, said "I think I'll run for president, have a little fun." After he got into it, he realized what a bunch of pushovers and numb-nuts he was running against. As the only fighter in the fight, he won. And everyone hated Hillary.

So, what about Biden? He seems decent.

Well, the Party realized that it was gonna be a commie up against Trump so they resuscitated Biden. Joe's been on the government tit all his adult life, he doesn't actually believe in anything. Empty suit, empty head. Easier to market than a commie.

She still thinks it's a mighty odd way to pick your leader. She's right, but Americans are a strange Bunch. Half of them want a commie and the other half want to be left alone. Tough to satisfy that crowd.

As is my habit, I watched exactly zero seconds of the debate last night. Still, I woke up this morning expecting the usual "our guy won" narrative from the lefty media (but I repeat myself) along with instant polls "proving" same.

But this morning, nothing. More of an "a pox on both houses" attitude, but unless I missed it, none of the triumphantism.

I take that as a sign.

Then I read that Verizon is doing everything they can to dump the Huffington Post because it is losing money faster than they can count it.

More good news.

Not a bad start to the day.

But I wonder if that name would be some sorta cultural appropriation that will get me cancelled? Or will I be put on a murderer’s hit list because I committed a Sharia Law infraction?

I dunno, man.

Wonder what the odds are on Trump just saying, "Fuck y'all" in the next month? His lack of joy in the combat, the lightness, seemed utterly gone. That, more than any specific tactical error in his debating style or substance, is what concerns me.

A Biden staffer is saying that orthodox Catholics, Jews and Moslems should be disqualified from serving on the Supreme Court because of their beliefs. But members of all these religions are in the habit of taking the founding documents of their religion seriously and reasoning from the principles found therein on current law. Isn't that a good habit of mind for a Justice of the US Supreme Court who has to reason from the Constitution? Or do liberals think we should be reasoning from some other document - Darwin perhaps? Karl Marx? Fortune cookies?

PS I see Edwin Church.

I don't get why Biden and Harris refuse to answer the court packing question. They can just lie instead. That's not really unexpected of them. They just say one thing now, and later say some other thing when they do it. Happens all the time. How's that $2500 health insurance premium reduction going. By now you should have a new boat.

If there was a football game, and one team was running back a kickoff, and headed for a touch down, and the referee tackled the runner just in time to stop that goal, that would be called a presidential debate with Candy Crowley, Mike Wallace, or any other "journalist", none of whom have probably ever voted for the Republican. That's a compliment to Republicans, but it's an un-American act.

In other news of the day...

Nature Sept 30, 2020

The major genetic risk factor for severe COVID-19 is inherited from Neanderthals

"...Among the individuals in the 1000 Genomes Project, the Neanderthalderived haplotypes are almost completely absent in Africa, consistent with that gene flow from Neanderthals into African populations was limited and probably indirect. The Neanderthal core haplotype occurs in South Asia at a frequency of 30%, in Europa at 8%, among admixed Americans at 4% and at lower frequencies in East Asia (Fig. 3).

The highest frequency occurs in Bangladesh, where more than half the population (63%) carries at least one copy of the Neanderthal risk haplotype and 13% is homozygous for the haplotype. The Neanderthal haplotype may thus be a substantial contributor to COVID-19 risk in certain populations besides other risk factors, most notably advanced age.

In apparent agreement with this, individuals of Bangladeshi origin in the UK have about two times higher risk to die from COVID-19 than the general population (hazard ratio 95% CI: 1.7-2.4)24..."

Flu Season Never Came to the Southern Hemisphere

Mask wearing and social distancing for COVID-19 may have cut influenza cases south of the equator

'...In the Southern Hemisphere, flu season would have been just taking off, but cases were virtually nonexistent. “Never in my 40-year career have we ever seen rates ... so low,” says Greg Poland, an influenza expert at the Mayo Clinic. Although researchers need to study the reasons further, several told Scientific American that coronavirus prevention measures—handwashing, mask-wearing, and social distancing—are working against flu transmission. If those measures continue, Poland says, countries could see the most dramatic drop in influenza cases in modern human history...'

Suddenly there were sources willing to talk about the secrets of the Trump administration:

Brad Parscale is under investigation for stealing between $25-$40 million from Trump's 2020 presidential campaign, well-placed sources told DailyMail.com.

The 44-year-old is also being investigated for pocketing another $10 million from the Republican National Committee, the insiders added.

Parscale's public meltdown happened while he is reportedly under investigation for stealing from the Trump campaign and the RNC. According to the source close to the campaign, the Trump family is worried that Parscale could turn on them and cooperate with law enforcement about possible campaign finance violations. “The family is worried Brad will start talking,” the source said.

So now we now can trace where some portion of the missing donations from Trump's 2017 inauguration ended up. Could the balance have found its way to failson Eric who is friendly toward Parscale?

Ann,

This New York Times story should be read by everyone: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/30/opinion/anarchists-protests-black-lives-matter.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage

The bottom line of the story: what we have been seeing on the streets during the last four months is not a conflict between the races. It is a conflict planned, stoked, and manipulated by some elite whites who expect to benefit from it.

And if anyone thinks this is from the fever swamps of the alt-Right, no: this is from a Harvard-graduate/Pulitzer-prize-winning journalist at the New York Times whose main source is an anarchist who spent several months embedded among the black-bloc activists.

I'm skeptical of the "mainstream media," but if this is fake... well, then we really cannot believe anything..

Apologies if Ann or another commenter has already mentioned this, but it seems to me to be pretty major.

Countries that apparently suppressed Covid with strong measures to keep people apart now are experiencing outbreaks once people no longer find it tolerable or acceptable to be kept apart

how does THAT fit into some people's mask fetish?
also from that article
There’s a reason nobody you know died of flu but you know several who died of Covid. Most who die of either have multiple serious health conditions but on few death certificates does it say flu. It may say cancer or heart disease, or organ failure, or nonspecific acute respiratory distress. Whereas even some people who died of gunshot wounds, drug overdoses and motorcycle accidents have been categorized as Covid victims in the U.S.

"

I've said this before many times, but please forbear: DJT was encouraged by Bill Clinton to run in 2016. When he entered the race there was a crowd of (R) contenders, but Trump got a lot of subtlely positive coverage from the news outlets - his run was 'unconventional ' 'unprecedented,' 'historic.' I suspect, but can't prove, that there was a lot of crossover voting in primaries which pushed Trump to the top of the list in a hurry while other candidates dropped out of the race. The RNC leadership didn't want him. Heck, I didn't want him and voted for someone else in the primary. Then, once he had a lock on the nomination, out came the oppo research they had been saving up. I submit that this was the real collusion that happened in 2016 - bringing on Trump as a straw candidate to ensure a Hillary win. They expected Todd Akin. Instead they got Archie Bunker, and just as Norman Lear couldn't get why Archie was so popular, Hillary couldn't figure why she wasn't 50 points ahead in the polls.

"So, what about Biden? He seems decent.

Well, the Party realized that it was gonna be a commie up against Trump so they resuscitated Biden. Joe's been on the government tit all his adult life, he doesn't actually believe in anything. Empty suit, empty head. Easier to market than a commie.

Biden isn't the real candidate. Harris is. This is the bait-and-switch election, or as I like to call it, the 'Biden-switch' election. If Kamala were the presidential candidate, she might not be easily classified as a communist/socialist, but I don't doubt that she would how to the hard left party line if elected.
