At The Owl Tree Café...
... you can talk about whatever you like... except the Democratic Party candidates and the Nevada caucus. Go to the previous post for that. The Owl Tree Café is a place for variety and unusualness.
Here's this morning sunrise:

I've wandered into Prime Suspect 3 about 20 minutes in. Still trying to figure out what's going on. But somehow she's in vice or something like that.
I guess series two was on last week or sometime like that because series one was on not too long ago (and discussed here).
That's either a very ill Northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) or a very dead one. Being smashed up against the trunk like that is very peculiar behavior.
Now that is an 'Owl' tree!
Should have known that the Doctor would go trans since Peter Capaldi is playing one on Prime Suspect.
a very dead one
Looks dead and hanging by a wing over the branch...? Hard to tell, though, what with its coloration blending-in so well.
Regarding owls, Ambrose Bierce wrote "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." This taught 8th graders about the mechanics of hanging, in the short story and in the commonly used French film. Owl Creek was assumed to be in North Eastern Ga. because of Bierce's military direction.

I suspect Fernandistein and Qaestor are right. I put the image on a larger screen and blew it up. Poor little thing.
Classic movies have been in discussion lately so I watched, for the first time all the way through, The African Queen with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. It was delightful. Trump scores again.
None of that CGI for that boat ride. It was all real.
Watched "Inglourious Basterds" again tonight. Harvey Weinstein, "The Weinstein Company", is featured quite prominently in the opening credits. Should I have turned it off and thrown it in the trash?
Really enjoyed it again, must be the fourth or fifth time I've watched it. There is a visceral good feeling that comes from seeing the Jew hating Germans get some comeuppance. Directed by Tarantino it plays as caricature, with outlandish, cartoonish violence, but still quite enjoyable. Christoph Waltz's character is perfectly played and so easy to despise. Melanie Laurant is beautiful, both in character and image.
Off tomorrow to look at more options for our move. House goes on the market in a week or so. Not much inventory where we would like to end up. May have to build.
The lighting in the photos the last few days has been very Spring-like to my eyes. Feeling that way around here. Mildest winter I can recall.
Just read that the real African Queen vessel, same one used in the film, is still in service for tourist rides down in Florida.
Oh well. It was a good run.
Losing interest in PS3. They not only ruin a movie when they rely on CGI so much that they blow the story, they also think that being "edgy" is all it takes and writing a good story be damned.
Some scenes with an early James Frain and the aforementioned Peter Capaldi.
A cave in the Czech has bones of both dog-like canids and wolf-like canids, dated at 28,500 BP. Their dental wear show totally different kinds of diet, more meat for the wolf and more bones [table scraps] for the dog. The dog evolution book I used to yak about 20 years ago had the divergence at about 15,000 BP.
Cool, but I'm still expecting to see further reaches back a couple more 10ks to when we out-competed the Neandertals into extinction with the excellent help of man's best friend.

Yes, a great movie. I have ridden and steered the actual African Queen! The boat, the real one from the movie, is a tourist attraction on Key Largo.
None of that CGI for that boat ride. It was all real.
Well, not all of it. Huston is noted for demanding on-location production in central Africa, chiefly the Belgian Congo and the British Protectorate of Uganda, partly for realism and partly because Huston wanted to do some big game hunting on the Studio's nickel. There was a real boat used for some shots, but mostly the "Queen" was a mockup built on a raft towed by another much larger vessel which was used not only to pull the principal set past dramatic African landscapes but supplied the power for the lights and that huge Technicolor camera.
Another "Queen" mockup was built in England for use in Isleworth Studio's horizon tank. A miniature was used for some of the river rapids sequences. Today the miniature would likely be replaced by a CGI model.
The ending is satisfying in a grand guignol sort of way and iconcur about laurent,
Yeah, they were real mock-ups. They all really existed. The same cannot be said for the cyber space of CGI movies.
Rod taylor was in this.
The Real, if you haven't seen it, is basically The View but with an all women of color cast. Unlike fake white ladies, these ladies always keep it 100 (except for the fake hair, eyelashes, makeup, and personalities). Shockingly, the token Asian seems to be the most reasonable, while Loni Love is the token fat black comedienne with the room temperature IQ who says things like "Uhhh huhh" with attitude. They recently added a fifth cast member, Amanda Seales, a mulatto with a chip on her shoulder the size of Texas.
Last week in their version of "Hot Topics," they were discussing the Jussie Smollett indictment. Loni and Amanda were appalled, and the other members were way too scared to challenge them. But the best was when Ms. Seales said that not only does what happened to Smollett happen "everyday in this country," but even if he made it up, she considers that "low-key noble." Ms. Seales has a master's degree from Columbia in African-American studies "with a concentration in hip-hop."
New America is going to be great.
Thanks for the warning, Farmer. I was so tempted to watch ;-)
But it is funny--I thought The View was the nadir, but it can be worse.

Clint Eastwood dumped Trump for Bloomberg.
“Now, he’s changed his tune a bit on Trump.
While he approves of “certain things” the president has done, he wishes that he would act “in a more genteel way, without tweeting and calling people names. I would personally like for him to not bring himself to that level,” he said.”

Yes, African Queen is Forester. He is public domain in Canada and cheap on kindle or kobo in Canada

Doesn’t Sanders want to make such degrees free?
In "High Society," the hungover uncle is said to look like "A treeful of owls."
Don't know if it's in The Philadelphia Story.
@Ken B:
Doesn’t Sanders want to make such degrees free?
I presume you think you're making some kind of a point, but I'm going to need a map and a compass to find it.
But for what it's worth, Columbia is a private university, and masters degrees are awarded by graduate schools.
@AA
Please sleuth out the owl again.
A la Nancy Drew.
Had never to my knowledge heard the expression 'something or other as a treeful of owls'; apparently Mr Clinton used 'as bright as a treeful of owls'. There is also the expression, reported from Texas: 'Don’t just sit there looking like a tree full of owls'.

Just read the article. This was the conclusion: "Similar failure in a future crisis, with regime credibility already damaged, could force political change today considered to be unthinkable."
Oh, okay then. So the coronvavirus and some "future crisis" could be the undoing of the PRC.
Well..Bloomberg says Xi has to deliver cuz not a dictator.
Well the mongolian plague of 1910 was a precursor to the first chinese revolution.
You alway plumb lower depths like jerry springer wasnt the nadir.
If An/The African Queen is in fact in Key Largo, they can say "We have it all.."
Some people stood up for it last time it was mentioned here, but I found the Forrester novel much inferior to the movie, and not at all up there with the Hornblower books.
Very lovely.
We have had a visitor on this island who finally got arrested and is on a
5 million $ bond. Seems she is missing a few children and some assorted family members.
You alway plumb lower depths like jerry springer wasnt the nadir.
Ever seen WorldStarHipHop?
Inga: "Clint Eastwood dumped Trump for Bloomberg."
Every lefty/dem in the US said we were not allowed to listen to Clint Eastwood because of his racist 2012 convention speech in support of literal theocrat Hitler Romney.
Surely you remember that....
Oh wait.
History Reset for you, again.
I hate to say anything, because, well, it will be obvious enough ...
Isn't it rather a long time since the last Islamist outrage?

About 2 1/2 years. Are we supposed to expect them at regular intervals?
No ive seen the real thats bad enough,
Real whistleblowers dont matter

Steve’s: One of the great things about “Inglorious Basterds” is how easy it makes it to root for suicide bombers and people who plan to burn everyone watching a movie to death. Plus the way a charming actress character murders a new father, only to be strangled to death by a charming colonel who is later mutilated by the charming American. It is a demonstration of how to manipulate audience emotion.
Farmer: About 2 1/2 years. Are we supposed to expect them at regular intervals?
Rather a long time != regular.
Islamist outrages were fairly frequent (where frequent != regular). Two and a half years seems a rather long time without one.
Even the Islamic world seems to be going without.
@Hey Skipper:
Rather a long time != regular.
That should have said 2 1/2 months. The Saudi flight student attack was last December.
The Saudi flight student attack was last December.
Yes, I know.
But for quite some time now, what had been fairly frequent mass-casualty events have become infrequent few, or no, casualty events.
A couple or so years ago, the annual death toll was in the thousands. Since then?
I read the Eastwood interview in WSJ. I don't care how movie stars vote, but Eastwood's comment completely lacks context. Was he talking about the Demmie nomination? Was he talking about POTUS? Was he answering a question? If so, what question was he answering? Was this before or after the debate last week? Had they just driven past a Bloomberg billboard?
I expect that Eastwood will clarify or modify his position as time goes by. I eagerly look forward to the letters column.
Danger, danger Will Robinson.
Alien Kurt Russell is attacking the Jupiter 2.
Well thats reassuring not

Yeah, I am not sure. The only sizable one I can recall from last year was the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka.

Heads need to roll.
Quite right. That's what the best movies do. Why else would you watch them?
stevew: good luck with the house hunting but building a house is fun!
Have done two so far and thinking about doing another after buying an existing home.
Not that I am a pro but tips I share are pick plumbing first! Especially tubs-those need to go in early in the process.
Also, with electricity think about Christmas lighting (if that’s something you do - both inside and outside) so outlets are near windows and cords don’t have to cross walkways outside.
Plus, my husband was gone a lot overnight so I had one bank of switches in the master bedroom that could turn on every outside light if I heard noises outside at night. (I hated motion sensor lights)
And stairs from your garage in to your basement/lower level are wonderful! Just make sure no angles are too sharp to bring furniture in that way.
Will someone, please, update us on the owl?
Thanks paminwi! Great suggestions. I travel a lot for work, also often overnight, love that suggestion.

An owlet fell from a tree in a park where my German Shepherd and I walk. I knew of a raptor rescue nearby, so called them. In the half hour or so that it took for someone to come out, my dog "adopted" the bird, and raised bloody hell when the lady grabbed the bird and stuck it in a box.
@Althouse, did you ever go back to that tree to see whether that poor little owl was still there?
Really, the content you have put in your post is very beautiful and thoughtful, it is a very good post, I would like to read such post again and again, I get a lot of inspiration.
