Trump toys with the notion that Congressman John Dingell — who died recently — is in Hell!

"Everything! I gave him everything. That’s okay. I don’t want anything for it. I don’t need anything for anything. [His widow] calls me up, 'It’s the nicest thing that’s ever happened, thank you so much, John would be so thrilled, he’s looking down, he’d be so thrilled. Thank you so much, sir.' I said that’s okay, don’t worry about it. Maybe he’s looking up, I don’t know. I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe."

Up. Down. Who knows which way Heaven is? Maybe Heaven is down and Hell is up, and Trump was toying with the directional mysteries of the afterlife. But no sense denying it. He was goofing around with the idea that a dead person may be watching not from Heaven but from Hell.

The widow is Debbie Dingell, who now occupies her late husband's seat in Congress. Olivia Nuzzi writes in NY Magazine:
I told her what the president said, apologizing for even repeating the words. She paused. She said she wasn’t sure what to say. She said she had to think about it.

Forty-five minutes later, she issued her statement: “Mr. President, let’s set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.”

To me, she said: “I’ve been one of the most measured members there is, so he may be mad because — I don’t know why he’s mad. I can’t explain why he’s fixated on me.... I really miss my husband today.... I’m raw. I’m sad. But I’m not gonna sit home and feel sorry for myself. I’m gonna go out and do what he would want me to do, and that is to be there for other people.”
Why tweak the widow? Because he gave her something and she wouldn't give something back?
“But I didn’t give him the B treatment,” Trump said. “I didn’t give him the C or the D — I could’ve. I gave the A-plus treatment.” As if to impersonate Debbie, he said, “Take down the flags.” Then, in a voice that suggested someone else asked him the question, he said, “Why you taking them down?” He answered the question in his own voice, “For ex-Congressman Dingell.” Then he assumed the other character, “Oh, okay.” Then he was Debbie again, “Do this, do that, do that. Rotunda.”
He gave a lot. So what does that mean? This for that? She should have given quid pro quo?

Like Debbie Dingell believes in Heavan, much less Hell. Right. Just like Nancy Pelosi prays every night for the President.

Chuck said...

Althouse you didn't mention the audience reaction to the Trump line. It seemed to me to be a mixture of shock, horror, general offense and disapproval.

John Dingell's base voters were mostly-white auto, steel and construction workers. Dingell was a life member of the NRA, and a staunch defender of gun rights. In other words, Trump was disparaging a hero of some of his own core voters in Michigan.

Dingells, father, son, and wife, have been on the congressional payroll continuously since 1933.

Dingell was the longest serving member of Congress. 60 years.

No doubt he is in hell

When Trump was a candidate and not showing proper respect for John McCain, John Dingell told Trump to go to HELL and Trump never forgets:

BamaBadgOR said...

Trump should not have said it. This is not a justification for Trump's comment, but Debbie Dingell should not have been elected because of her husband. No way she would have been elected but for her husband.

Lucid-Ideas said...

Hell hath no fury like a woman thinking of her husband living it up in heaven, she'd rather he be in hell.

A plague on both their houses.

Trump absolutely should have said it. It was funny.

Haven't we seen this a million times before:

1) Trump makes a mild *ambiguous* joke or comment
2) DNC-Media lIes or spins it as a hateful attack or comment
3) Democrats and Media trash Trump for being so nasty and hateful
4) Concerned RINOs/moderates tut-tut and are concerned

Now it will be repeated ad nauseum that "Trump said Dingell was in hell" BUT he said no such thing.

He was obviously riffing on some resentment; Dingell may have been a corrupt old bull and Debbie D a beeyotch (I know little about either one, even after reading a dozen comments) but

Fake outrage from the Widow. This is Cindy McCain redux. Something about the second wives of members of Congress.

rcocean said...

Trump as President has treated the families of the dead Establishment Pols with great respect. McCain, Bush I, Dingell, and there are others. He's let some of them use Air Force 2, issued nice statements, ignored their previous nasty behavior toward him, flew flags at half-mast when he didn't have to do, gave them state funerals, etc.

And all he's gotten back is nastiness and attacks. Given the impeachment is a fake, there's no reason Widow Dingell couldn't have voted Present. Or simply understood Trump was making a joke. But she's obviously looking out for No. 1 and a House run in 2020.

Dr. Althouse, do I recall correctly that you have a "lightweight religion" tag?

Trump is playing with this. He's calling out the glib references to the deceased "smiling down from heaven" to support a contentious stance or decision. In his ineluctably crass, crude way, he's reminding us that we are not the judges deciding salvation or damnation. In fact, I find it difficult to take any self-professed Christian seriously who doesn't start from "Judge not, lest ye be judged" and "For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God." Part and parcel of Christianity is the possibility of eternal damnation—in fact, it's the default outcome. So crass and crude though it is, Trump is right to point out the inherent glibness, not to mention lack of ecumenical humility, in assuming the opposite.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

At first you said Althouse banned him. Over&over&over again you repeated this, yet when asked for a link to prove your claim you refused to provide one. Then someone else (?) provided a link to Meade saying that Chuck was asked to leave (didn't say who exactly asked him to leave, didn't say he was banned, his posts weren't deleted - just that he was "asked to leave")

Others who have been banned (like M*ry and F*n) have their comments removed quickly upon being discovered in the threads - yet Chuck's comments remain, even right now with Meade in the thread.

We've been told that once banned there is no getting back into Althouse's good graces. There is a slim possibility she changed that policy of hers, but I find it highly doubtful.

Add it all together, and it seems that what you're saying about him being banned doesn't add up to the reality we see happening in the threads. With you being so wrong about this...and constantly so...it makes it really hard to beleive anything else you say about the guy.

Your posts are nothing more than the ramblings of a mad man...a man who is very mad at one particular person and you just can not let it go. You're ridiculous. You should work on your anger management problem, then go to a good ol' fashioned movie with a friend.

She and the dems would be even more screwed if she sends it over!!

Rock and a hard place amigos. Rock and a hard place.

Remaining Question: will this little impeachment taste the dems gave their insane base sufficient to satisfy them, or will the mob come to realize how they've been had?

We planned on GM and Chrysler going bankrupt

Mitt Romney did. He wrote about it in a NYT editorial. (The Times editors gave the op-ed a headline, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." Liberals and Democrats excoriated him for it.

Then along came Obama, and his car czar, and under the guise of a "bailout," they took Chrysler and GM through managed bankruptcies almost exactly as Romney had predicted a year earlier.

And then Detroit, under the exclusive control of Democrats for two lifetimes, went into a municipal bankruptcy. Expertly handled by a Republican governor (and Trump hater), Rick Snyder.

And then Flint, also insolvent after two lifetimes of Democratic Party control, had its own problems.

I swear that some of the worst anti-Republican hate speech to be found anywhere in the USA today comes from the Trump Party.

However, if it is true that Chuck has been banned then every time you mention him and/or interact with him you are saying "FUCK YOU" to our hostess. (Especially when you do so in threads he hasn't even commented in)
