Axelrod isn't quite saying it's a witch hunt, but it too easily plays into the "witch-hunt" meme.

It's hard to think what anything really is or isn't anymore. It feels much better/smarter/safer to speak about whether things fit into memes. Or really not even that. It's more a matter of whether something can be used by somebody else to further their memes.

The problem is always what will soap opera women think. It's not about memes but which narrative interests them. That's what they will play on TV.

It's always hard to judge what story idea will be a hit, which is what you need to sell eyeballs to advertisers.

Tax returns are confidential. The way it got past self-incrimination was that the IRS would never release the returns to anybody, so you have to report illegal income lest they get you on a tax conviction.

If it's not confidential any longer, then nobody has to file taxes.

I am also wondering about the cost to the entities served with the request for "any and all documents" referring to such a wide-ranging list of loosely defined subjects. Is it allowable in law to saddle them with that? If so, it seems indeed to smack of "the power to destroy."

Not to mention the power to indict for "failure to comply." It seems there could be a range of opinions other than Jerrold Nadler's as to whether any particular piece of paper was pertinent or not.

Ah, the meme meme. Progs aren't really trying to scorch the earth and seize power, you know, they are just pushing memes.

I don't think the various congressional Dems, the media, and the Deep Staters have any notion of how it all looks of course. They're too ensconced in their bubbles for any sort of external information to penetrate. They believe that most Americans must be as deeply concerned as they are. In the Salem witch-hunts, the primary accusers were girls who claimed that they saw so-called "spectra", such as imps or black cats, which nobody else could see.

In the RussiaGate witch-hunts, the primary accuser was Christopher Steele, who claimed that he had received secret information Russian Intelligence insiders, whom nobody else could see.

In this new round of witch-hunts, the primary accuser is Michael Cohen, who claims to sense the existence of corruption evidence that nobody else has seen.

=======

These new witch-hunts will be limited by the fact that Hillary Clinton was not elected. If she were the US President, these witch-hunts would be much worse.

One of Clinton's methods was to claim that all of the USA's 17 Intelligence agencies agreed with her malicious fantasies about her political opponents. If she were President now, she often would be declaring publicly that all 17 Intelligence agencies agreed that this Republican staffer is a Russian spy and that this other Republican Facebook advertiser is undermining Democracy on Putin's orders and that this other Republican donor is helping Russian exchange students sexually compromise supporters of the National Rifle Association -- and so forth and so on.

If Clinton were President, she would be using "all 17 Intelligence agencies" to instigate witch-hunts against her political enemies all the time.

Just saw a clip a Nadler. He says all of the people and documents asked for have already talked to Mueller or SDNY. (but they won't advance anything because there is nothing)

The Democrats know.(leaks from Mueller) that there is no criminal activity. Now all they want is information they can leak out, in out of context snippets. All in a stupid attempt to drive down President Trump's approval ratings. (the same or higher that Obama's now)

Nadler in an interview yesterday explained that they were not yet to impeachment, first he has to convince the voters of President Trumps unfitness. The Democrats our honest about their motives. Harm President Trumps poll numbers...because there is nothing else to do.

Per buwaya, I think some kind of memo must have gone out recently on the optics of these investigations. This morning on CNN, they were pushing a Dem Congressman from CA to opine on why his CA colleague, was wrong about how all these document requests were indicators of a fishing expedition and a lack of confidence that Mueller would turn up anything. That's how they put it: explain why this is not what the GOP guy characterizes it as, please. Best this Congressman could do was resort to pabulum about how, as a member of the Judiciary Committee and Congress, their role is oversight. Oversight is good, so how can more oversight be bad? It's oversight, dammit, that's what we're there to do--oversee. What's the matter with more sunlight? We're spreading sunshine. Not very convincing to me, but it seemed to satisfy Alyson Camerota, who moved on once she got the response she had set the question up for.

Here's a NYT article that reads like a Johnny Carson/Ed McMahon "how fat is he joke".

Nadler, as a Last Resort, Sheds Weight by Surgery, Nov. 16, 2002

Now, after decades of health-threatening obesity and futile dieting, Mr. Nadler has taken a more aggressive course: During the Congressional recess in early August, he underwent stomach-reduction surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan...

If the usual rigors of serving in Congress were not enough, Representative Jerrold Nadler, a Manhattan Democrat, struggled for years with the personal torment of being... [How obese is he!?] so overweight that he could not make it up even a single flight of stairs to the second floor of the Capitol to vote on the House floor. He used the elevator instead.

Mr. Nadler peaked at 338 pounds before the surgery, whereas Mr. Roker peaked at 320 pounds. But Mr. Roker is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, while Mr. Nadler is 5-foot-4. [How obese is he!?] Mr. Nadler was so obese that he long ago gave up riding the subway in New York to avoid the tiring climb up and down the steps.

Mr. Nadler, an influential New York politician who became known nationally for his staunch defense of President Clinton, said he took this radical step after realizing that his life depended on it.

No bogus “Benghazi!” type investigations.

Boy there is a wealth of stupid in that one post. “Benghazi” is a place and refers to a real event, an event for which there are real unanswered questions after all this time. It also refers to the investigation, which is an excellent illustration of Democrat perfidy. The D members of the various committees did all they could to obstruct the investigation and the Obama admin lied and hid documents all the way through. The fact State kept returning requests for Hillary’s emails with “404 none found” led to the whole separate investigation into how exactly DUD Hillary communicate.

Yet we still don’t know why Chris Stevens was in Benghazi meeting shady people on the 9/11 anniversary. And while the specific crime of mishandling secret data was articulated none of the targets were raided by FBI. Nope, they were allowed to do casual FBI interviews with no recording or 302s produced. Staff lawyers were allowed to play personal attorney. No one was prosecuted for their obvious lies, such as Hillary’s claims (130 times!) that she didn’t know or couldn’t recall. She didn’t know nothing!

In contrast we have Shitt and Nadsler and the other 2-year Witchhunt where NO CRIME IS NAMED. instead of our 240 years of normal jurisprudence we now have imitated Beria: they will find the crime whether it exists or not.

What skill does Axelrod plausibly have in determining the facts of the Russia case? And even if he had an informed opinion, which is almost certainly democrat-negative, why would he voice it? The fact is he is a campaign strategist, so basically a propagandist, but if we're more generous, a memester, and he's meme-ing on one side. Reality is not his expertise, so I can't totally blame him for being confused by it.

Just look at him: it's not possible that he's not guilty of terrible crimes. Unfortunately, that's a sufficient justification for almost anything Trump's partisan enemies want to do to him, regardless of the cost to our political and civil institutions. It's not just the smooth transfer of power between administrations that's been forfeit here, but the integrity of law enforcement, intelligence and justice institutions. And with each escalation, the stakes are being raised. Finally, Axelrod and CNN anchors are fearing this, hence the sudden concern about optics of the document requests. In general, the most politically intolerant Americans, according to the analysis, tend to be whiter, more highly educated, older, more urban, and more partisan themselves. This finding aligns in some ways with previous research by the University of Pennsylvania professor Diana Mutz, who has found that white, highly educated people are relatively isolated from political diversity. They don’t routinely talk with people who disagree with them; this isolation makes it easier for them to caricature their ideological opponents.

“The longer special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election has gone on, the more President Trump has railed against it. Since the investigation began in May 2017, the president has taken to Twitter and dismissed it as a "witch hunt" more than 125 times.

That criticism aside, the special counsel investigation has resulted in criminal counts against more than 30 people and three Russian entities. And while the final outcome of the Mueller probe remains far from certain, it has already generated new insights into how Russia targeted the election, the presidential transition and Trump's business empire.”

Take a look and you might just see what crimes have been committed. Ever heard of un-indicted co-conspirator? Some do get indicted...eventually.

When a witch-hunt begins, its first victims are odd, friendless, socially isolated individuals with few economic resources. Eventually, however, the witch-hunt spreads and increasingly attacks conventional, popular people who have the money to defend themselves.

In the case of the Salem witch-hunts, the first victims were elderly spinsters. Eventually, however, the witch-hunts attacked some of the state's most prominent citizens.

In the case of the RussiaGate witch-hunt, the first victims included George Papadopolous and Carter Page, a couple of free-lance consultants trying to develop their careers. Eventually, however, the FBI initiated an investigation of the US Attorney General, Jeff Sessions.

In the new case of Jerrold Nadler's witch-hunt, the first victims will be only the relatives and close associates of Donald Trump. Eventually, however, Nadler will expand his list of victims from 81 to 810.

Powerful people in the our country's Establishment already understand that in just a couple of years from now, none of them will be safe. The witch-hunt will begin with Jared Kushner, but by late 2020 might attack also, for example, Howard Schultz.

======

When zealous witch-hunter Andrew McCabe initiated his counter-intelligence investigation of Attorney General Sessions, he went too far. That action backfired on McCabe.

Very powerful people in the Establishment understood that none of them were safe from McCabe, and so they got rid of him.

Now McCabe travels around the USA, still preaching the righteousness of his witch-hunt, but he has lost his effective power to accuse people of being witches. He has become like one of those Salem girls who had lost their power to cause trials of witches and who therefore had to return to their ordinary, humble lives.

The corrupt totalitarian Stalinist left should be told to pound sand. Daily.

The chairman of the Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee has fired off document requests to over 80 entities in President Trump's administration, as well as his family and business, dramatically expanding their investigations. This, even after the FBI, multiple congressional committees, and probably the Mueller investigation all failed to find evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia.

Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) announced on Monday that his committee served document requests to 81 agencies, entities, and individuals as part of its probe into "alleged obstruction of justice, public corruption, and other abuses of power by President Trump."

Nadler's gambit comes after the House Intelligence Committee, led by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), announced its own expanded probe into the president's finances last month.

These hostile actions have spurred some Republicans to cry foul, including Washington attorney Joe diGenova, who suggested today that Trump's DOJ should not cooperate with Nadler's abusive investigation.

The Trump-haters minds' certainly won't be changed by anything that Nadler and his doofuses turn up. The Trump supporters' minds likewise will not be changed.

All this will do is turn more people off to the entire thing. Every night there will be sensationalist headlines; the MSM will be having a ball. All of this will be aimed at weakening DJT as we approach 2020.

But if Trump can keep the country moving ahead as it is moving ahead now (I just read that pending home sales increased 4.6%! in January), none of this crap will matter. It'll just make the other side look stupid. I believe that there are a lot of folks in this country who don't like Trump very much, but they cannot argue with the results he has produced. Given a choice between the obnoxious orange-hair who gets things done and a Democrat candidate who has lots of platitudes about how things ought to work, I think these folks will hold their noses and vote for Trump.

My guess is we'll see a similar picture in 2020 that we saw in 2016: Left and right coasts for the Democrat (whoever and whatever he/she is), but the VAST majority of the folks in the country voting for Trump.

Trump may very well be guilty of crimes—I'd be surprised if he were not—

it's not possible that he's not guilty of terrible crimes

Really? Following the Cohen hearing, George Mason University law professor David Bernstein (who's no Trump supporter) just the other day posted this on Facebook (quoting…):

Donald Trump is a man of low character. But he’s apparently quite careful in avoiding doing things that are obviously illegal. Or, at least, that’s what I surmise from the fact that his personal lawyer of 10 years really can’t come up with anything he did that was obviously illegal.

(/unQuote)

For Inga and those like her hope lies eternal…. But there's also the saying that “Hope is not a strategy.” Here's what we know that Cohen testified (quoting…):

Mr. Trump did not directly tell me to lie to Congress. That’s not how he operates. In conversations we had during the campaign, at the same time I was actively negotiating in Russia for him, he would look me in the eye and tell me there’s no business in Russia and then go out and lie to the American people by saying the same thing.

(/unQuote)

It's going to be pretty hard impeaching Trump for (e.g.) “suborning perjury” (asking his lawyer to lie to Congress for him) when his cooperating lawyer's testimony is that Trump didn't “suborn”! (There wasn't even a wink and a nod! The lawyer testified in effect he just picked it all up by extrasensory osmosis!)

I think folks should seriously consider at this point that the probability is that Trump didn't commit any crimes of note here. He didn't “collude” with Russia (that narrative is in ruins at this point), and he didn't illegally attempt to “suborn perjury.” Time will tell, but that's where the evidence that's come out over the past 2+ years points.

Compare Trump's relatively strong position with Canadian prime minister Trudeau — who is suddenly really in trouble (for tampering repeatedly with his attorney general’s prosecutions, then firing her when she refused to bend) — and at her explicit testimony is likely soon to be booted out of office.

Meanwhile, Trump's job appears to be secure — at least until 2020.
