Watching the midterm election results.

1. How are you watching? The news channels have been nattering for hours about how to watch. They’re laying down the first phase of a narrative that we’ll look back on. In 2016, I didn’t fully appreciate the narrative at the time, and I don’t want to miss it this time. But I always assume things will be boring!

2. Seems fair to say it’s not a “blue wave.” 7:51 CT.

3. Fox News says the Democrats will take the House.

4. CNN says Cruz wins and GOP keeps the Senate.

Walker might be done. There is a lot left in the state, but Dane County still has about 9% of the precincts left which could easily provide Evers with another 10,000 votes in a margin that is now back up to the 11K after falling just just a hundred votes about 15 minutes ago. Walker will win handily most of what is left, but probably not by enough to overcome the present deficit.

My impression is that all the networks are conspiring NOT to call the Florida Senate race, just to get more advertising minutes. What else could explain the refusal while showing 100% of the precincts reporting?

Drago said...

With Nelson making recount noises in Florida, we are literally just minutes away from the "TruCon" cucks at the National Review, Weekly Standard and other far left funded "conservative" publications to call on Rick Scott to step aside for the sake of comity and unity.

I hope Scott does not take their advice.

Gee, maybe Schiff will now reveal to us the evidence he says he’s seen proving Trump colluded with the Russians.

Sorry to hear that Stephen, there was a friend who was diagnosed with cancer she had this operation but there was relapse.

So strong trump supporters except possibly kobach who can replace Ashcroft now, won pretty strongly in the Senate. Blackburn Scott Hawley I suppose since the rally in Cape girardeau. Luke warm get benched.

I think that Nelson can fantasize about recounts all he wants. The doddering old fool is just going to have to find a hobby now.

MANDATE. That was the word I was forgetting.

Who has a mandate for a squeaker of a majority in the House?

If this is a repudiation of Trump and the Republicans, it is an extraordinarily mixed message as entire states (rather than districts) seem to prefer Republicans.

Now, if there had been a blue wave, I would have pulled up my big boy pants and admitted that people didn't like us much. But we've had 95% negative coverage of Trump and Republicans and we...win...the...Senate. And we win it a lot.

I am not claiming a mandate for Trump. I am simply denying a mandate for Pelosi and Progressivism.

B.A.G. reports: Van Jones is downright gleeful on CNN.

How is it possible that one network could contrive to have both Van Jones and Don Lemon on its staff? Incredible.

Affirmative action. Next question.

I know it’s a bit early to talk 2020, but indulge me:

1. I think Trump has now sewn up Ohio & Fla
2. This means it comes down again to Wis, Mich & Penn. Trump must win 1 of these 3 to squeak by.
3. Penn & Mich have slightly veered more blue, with tonight’s results.
4. That means it comes down to Wisc.

Yancey Ward said...

Without all the Republican retirements in the House, they would have held their majority pretty easily tonight. That loss of incumbency in marginal districts cost them at least 12 seats alone tonight.

Seeing Red said...

We’re back to normal. I hope the screaming diaper babies shut up.

Mark said...

If I were cynical, I would predict that the Republican Senate will now suddenly be more accommodating to taking up bills passed by the House than they ever were under Ryan or Boehner.

tim in vermont said...

Scott used a huge amount of campaign cash — much of it his own — and his position as a Washington outsider to beat Nelson, a relatively popular incumbent who nevertheless failed to inspire much excitement in a campaign year when Democrats were energized in many races across the country. Scott’s spending advantage helped him build an early polling lead, and Nelson was never quite able to close the gap.

Yeah, the “relatively popular” incumbent Senator of many many years was beaten purely by money. Right.

FIDO said...

By the way: I was wrong about Menendez and Manchin.

I was correct about Heitcamp, McCaskill and Donnelly, but hell, Ray Charles could see where THAT was going.

I also expected Michigan, but that didn't happen. Still think McSally has a chance.

Florida was called. Another Republican pick up.

That is four extra seats.

I would rather have Trump's problems than Pelosi's problems.

Chuck,

Tell us about the tax returns of real estate investors. I have consulted to the industry. The layers of partnerships and complex deductions makes it impossible for the general public to decipher.

There will be selective leaks that make Trump look bad, although he and his accountants passed muster with the IRS.

Here is a deal. Trump releases his tax returns and Hillary gives us her Foundation records and lost emails. Obama releases his college grades and the Khalidi tape. How about if everyone s transparent?

Right now Arizona basically depends on Maricopa County. The vote count from that county so far is almost dead even, and it is the biggest chunk left to count, too. Sinema can probably pick upwards of another 40,000 from Pima County (that is probably the high figure, and the real number will probably be less), and McSally another 5000 from Pinal County. Right now McSally has 21,000 vote lead. It will depend on what is actually left in Maricopa, I think.

Yes, Heller is finished. Too far behind, and the counties not reported don't even have the number of votes even if Heller won 100% of the them. Should be called by the networks.

Yancey Ward said...

Montana won't be decided until sometime tomorrow, if then. The biggest piece left is Missoula County, which is Tester's strongest region which could net him another 10-14K. He is behind right now by 3300. Most of what is left beyond that, though, greatly favors Rosendale. A quick count of that tells me he might get another 10K margin from that missing precincts. Probably won't be decided by more than 2-5K votes. A recount is probably assured.

Yancey Ward said...

AZ is very interesting. McSally still 22K ahead, but Maricopa is now 79% complete with Sinema ahead there by 3K. The big missing piece is 60% of the Pima County where Sinema has racked up a 40K vote lead, but that lead hasn't grown since the 25% mark was passed, so what has been counted lately in that county has been a wash. Almost all of the rest of the state has been counted now, so McSally can really only pick up votes from Maricopa at this point.

Yancey Ward said...

Ok, a really big chunk of Pima County just came through, and McSally won that by 3K. Pima is now 98.4% counted. That was the biggest danger to McSally. This really only leaves Maricopa where Sinema is winning by about 1% from the 78% counted, and Pinal County where McSally could pick up another 2K votes. With a lead of 26,000 votes, I think McSally is going to win. Sinema would have to win the last quarter of Maricopa County by a margin greater than the county has shown at any point tonight. I don't think it likely that Sinema can catch McSally, unless they find more ballots in Milwaukee.

Big Mike said...

Wisconsin is strange. From where I sit in Virginia he appears to have done a very poor job as Superintendent of Public Education. Now Democrats have elevated him to the governorship so that he can ... improve education outcomes?

Wisconsin got weird near the end. At one point, Milwaukee County was 99% counted, then, all of a sudden, ten of thousands of new ballots were being counted. That needs to be examined a little more closely, I think. It probably was an oversight somewhere, but with big city Democrats, you never can be too suspicious.

Yancey Ward said...

McSally is ahead by 17K with maybe another 30K votes to be counted in Maricopa County. It is unlikely that Sinema can win with what is supposedly left, unless Milwaukee can find some uncounted absentee ballots for Arizona Democrats.

The NYT maps let you click through to see what counties are still to report.

Doing that it looks like McSally will win.
It also looks like Tester will win 😢

So looks like 54 in the senate.

The usual suspects are all masturbating furiously, angrily. People are going to be punished. They desperately want to punish wrongthink and to masturbate angrily as they do.
Comedy ensues.

Nate Silver just flew to Vegas midweek to rent out the Presidential Suite at the Bellagio and get knee deep with hookers, gin, cocaine and cigars. "I told you so - Bitches!"

Watched the WI governor race, and it was Walker up, then Evers up, just back and forth with about 1,000 votes either way. Most of the counties had finished their count, and to my complete amazement, this morning I find out that Evers beats Walker by about 31,000. What? Where did these late votes come from?

AllenS said...

Agree, Foxconn is probably what did Walker in. Plus the 30,000 votes from where?

Whenever Republicans have a thin majority there are moderates who people look to in fear of that majority flipping. Who are the moderate House Democrats?

Matt Sablan said...

Like we knew Murkowski or Flake or Collins in the Senate may vote with Democrats. But the House is bigger, so you'd think Republicans would have a strategy of who to target for budget and legislation deals in the House. The FBI and other investigations are dead though. As expected no one will truly be held accountable for the colossal screw up that was the Russia and secret server investigations.

Turns out that both the election of U.S. Senators and the Electoral College are unconstitutional.

You're one of the few stooges up North still standing with Scott Walker, I dare say...

Make that 1,293,260 stooges and myself statewide (WI), with 10,869 stooges and myself in Polk County, and 21,872 stooges in St Croix.

Sizable number of stooges for Walker, if you ask me.

I set the over/under at 55.5 Republican Senate seats.
Looks like it will finish at 55.

I set the Democrat House pick-ups at 23 (plus or minus five).
Looks like +28 is the number.

So I missed the Senate by half a person.
I needed half of Heller to win in Nevada.

"Walker took the "poor kids in Milwaukee with crappy public schools and no other options" voucher program and instituted it state wide."

Tony Evers has been Superintendent of Public Instruction of Wisconsin since 2009. Why don't you ask him. Then, when you get the time, ask Evers why the big difference between black achievement and white achievement in WI schools.

Sad days. I was wrong. I am going over why I was wrong.

5 billion dollars was spent on this midterm.

That is staggering.

The pennsylvania and arizona redistricting are interesting.

Kansas and Iowa. Hmm...

Not even a roaring economy can overcome the gravity of the midterms.

At least we have more republicans in congress than we did before the election I guess.

They wont have the cover of Paul Ryan and John McCain and their cohorts pushing through dem priorities.

Happy to say I didn't watch a minute of any of it. Put on some tunes, cleaned out the loft and didn't know the results until this morning. Deliberately avoided it all.
