Watching the midterm election results.

1. How are you watching? The news channels have been nattering for hours about how to watch. They’re laying down the first phase of a narrative that we’ll look back on. In 2016, I didn’t fully appreciate the narrative at the time, and I don’t want to miss it this time. But I always assume things will be boring!

2. Seems fair to say it’s not a “blue wave.” 7:51 CT.

3. Fox News says the Democrats will take the House.

4. CNN says Cruz wins and GOP keeps the Senate.

OK, I just now saw the first AZ results. So far McSally by a hair.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

I did not even know Donna Shalala was running.

I think House results will portend more long-term trends.

The ideology of the House from Gingrich's 1990s nonsense has framed everything in politics up until now, but that could not last.

More women will be voted in than ever before.

The white male suicide state will still continue, and their fatalistic style of leadership will continue to be more nationalistic, but not deterministic.

The demographic trends that lead the House changes will dominate the long-term trends that begin tonight.

IF the Dems take the House I would genuinely like to see Trump work with both houses of Congress to construct a new health care system. IMO, it should be delegated to the states but our system does need improving. Only the poor and the rich can get coverage now.

I think I said a good bit more than that, Travis Bickle Birkel. But I understand if it was too much for your tiny brain to comprehend.

Mock,

My rule of thumb is that you can't determine anything until 50% of the precincts report totals. Then you can go county by county at RCP and see who has what left and what their margins are to that point. Then you can do some rough calculations. Right now, AZ is just started to count votes. Look again around 11 p.m. EST.

This is politics the way it should be. Finally. Fine-tuning the issues district-by-district. Trump's been a catalyst for rearranging lots of stuff, but not just the stuff that Trump wants as his agenda. It will be interesting to see how this realigns things. The country will continue becoming more progressive and moving away from 1990s Gingrich ideological global corporatism.

Bickle understands nothing. No one ever predicted there was a chance of flipping the Senate.

I could say what races I am interested in looking at but not for Bickle's sake, because he's still stuck in partisan shill-land and counting widgets for the RNC, which cannot have any solid majoritarian governing philosophy once Trump is gone - and not really even while he is still leading (if you call it that) it. Republicans will be split between fascist nationalists and machiavellian opportunists, but the people won't trust them. This election is mostly about how the DNC will continue to transform. It has not much to do with the RNC. Trump's already set about transforming the RNC about as much as he can take it. They have a power base that will continue statewide, but it is narrow.

Michigan has been a near-total disaster for Trump Republicans.

Trump's favored candidate in the Michigan gubernatorial primary is losing.

Even more interesting; Trump's 2016 Michigan campaign manager, Lena Epstein is losing in a district that has never not been Republican since our last redistricting, and which Trump won handily in 2016. And Epstein lost to a weak Democratic newcomer, too. That one portends a fucking Republican disaster in the House. Before tonight, I would not have predicted that loss.

Yeah, Long-term Trump being able to reshape the judiciary will probably have the most effect on the country. The Republicans picking up a few extra seats in the Senate makes it easier in that regard as well. Plus if the Dems only wind up with a 13, 11, or 9 seat majority in the house it will be easier to poach some off to get certain pieces of legislation through. The half-life of the time a newly elected representative has before they have to start campaigning again and raising money again is about 2 months.

I am depressed. Bad times for Michigan, with a Democrat as governor through 2020 and beyond.

We've had a great, amazing run with Rick Snyder. He took Detroit through its municipal bankruptcy with skill and expertise and fantastic talent. Balanced state finances, long term. His Lt. Governor, Brian Calley, would've continued that run, competently.

Trumpists got control of our primaries and we got stuck with loser candidates for the general election.

Whoever was worried about Whitmer being the return of Granholm; she will be the return of Granholm.

You can't stop the media reporting the news. One solution might be to have all the states agree to synchronize releasing results to coincide with west coast time (sorry, Hawaii and Alaska). It would be like an election-related Uniform Commercial Code. Then the media would have to report unreliable exit polling.

I'm sure it wouldn't work, given that a lot of eastern states (and non-panhandle Florida) are perfectly happy to think their outcomes will influence folks further west. But it wouldn't run afoul of the first amendment.

I am not surprised by John James losing. You aren't either, it seems. And that is precisely why I wrote "predictably."

I just wanted to rub that particular loss into all of the Trump fans. Because I think that outside of Michigan, John James captured the imagination of lots of Trump fans. They love stuff like "helicopter pilot;" "black conservative;" "business-owning outsider." When in fact the guy has zero political record.

As for Haley Stevens attracting money; she did. And it was because Democrats smelled blood in that district, and they particularly hated the Trumpist Epstein. Respectfully, I think I saw more Epstein ads (and she comes from a millionaire family) than Stevens ads on television. But I defer to the numbers on that.

The Michigan 11th may be the perfect exemplar of what went wrong in the House. That district had Republican Dave Trott holding the seat. A smart, rich lawyer and a smooth campaigner who didn't need a Congressional job. And when things got shitty surrounding the Trump presidency, he quit. So it was an open seat. Lena Epstein was running for the Senate; she immediately quit that and declared for the House seat. She was full of herself, coming off Trump's unlikely Michigan win. She was the Trump-iest congressional candidate in the state. And now she's a loser.

Trumpit - no you don't. (want that) (trust me, my young friend - it is easy for me to know you do not want that, and I want it to be easy for you too - we are brothers!)

Tonight, I brought some gifts to some friends who work at a restaurant. I am not a very good person, just average, but - trust me - I stopped at a pastry store to buy some wonderful lemon tart treats for the people I knew at that restaurant. They would have been so happy ....

Because they had been nice to me, had poured our a free beer or two for me, because I spoke in a friendly way to them.

Trumpit, my young friend, I know the intensity you feel in your heart.

The friends who worked at the restaurant were - every single one of them - not working tonight. So, I, living in a world where expected good things often do not happen to me, figured I would go somewhere else, so I go to the wine shop next door.

DIsaster, Trumpit, Disaster! The poor employees at the wine store were being heckled by a Resist dude, on his own, and obviously drunk,
When I walked in I heard the conversation - You are being persecuted by our President and our Congress! and so on,the normal routine, but the poor fellow was obviously on some kind of drug.

So I go to the cashier, who is being harangued by the Resistance Hero in His Own Mind, and I start to pay. Resistance Hero tells the cashier that he and the cashier are hermanos and Maybe the Gringo (me) is a Hermano too - just maybe (he was condescending, the poor little guy).

So I decided to teach the fellow a lesson about what people who care about other people really think,,.

I pronounce Spanish perfectly, I have many friends whose native language is Spanish (and I voted for Trump, so I was personally offended) and I said

Somos Todos Hermanos

Resistance Guy said a few things and started to try to hug me

I said ---- No, you do not hug people, you ask them if they want to hug you

and I hugged him

and we spoke a few words of friendship, and he left the wine shop, and started harassing other people out on the neighboring sidewalk - telling them that we are all brothers, and so on, but in an unkind way, in an argumentative way ....

God bless you, Trumpit.

I had hoped that Resistance Guy would, after being hugged by me, by me who does not really like to hug people like him, would have gone out of the wine shop and been kind,

But no, not tonight, maybe tomorrow.

Trumpit, God hears your prayers, pray with me that some day soon people will be kind to each other as much as they can.

Dream that dream, my young friend.

Our guardian angels have known each other a long time, I know that, I want you to know that too.

It's true that no one predicted the Dems would win the Senate. On the other hand, no one was predicting that they'd lose more of it. How come they didn't edge a bit closer to control like the House?

1) The Democrat Senators had a boatload of seats facing election in the Senate and the Republicans did not.

2) Also there is a big difference between winning a local election and winning a state-wide election.

3) Not everybody is straight-ticket. I don't know what percentage of voters are mixed ballot, but it's probably a fair chunk. Moderate voters like to spread it around.

4) One possibility is many moderate voters are unhappy about Senate Democrats and how they treated Brett Kavanaugh. So if you're a moderate who feels that way, you vote R for Senate and D for House.

Chuck:
Bloomberg put in a $2 million ad buy to help Stevens.

Independence USA PAC has reported spending $2.63 million to support Stevens so far this election cycle.

Stevens has outraised Epstein, bringing in $3.58 million to Epstein's $2.26 million in total receipts.

This week, Stevens reported $469,680 in cash reserves as of Oct. 17, while Epstein had $63,715 in the bank.

That's all fine; it is still a district that a Republican should win. We drew it that way. And on Detroit television, there was hardly any space left for any more ads in any event.

I follow Michigan politics pretty closely, and I never heard of Haley Stevens before this year.

I am quite surprised by the apparent split vote tonight- it was the outcome I didn't think likely- I really thought both houses would go one way or the other. The ease with which IN and MO were won is surprising given the polls, but then that just shows the polls are largely shit. I really hope Tester gets handed his walking papers. Still, though, the Dems could win in NV and AZ and hold MT. That would have been a good outcome for them before tonight in the Senate, and would take some air out of Republicans were it to happen. However, I think either McSally or Heller holds on, but we will see.

My measure for "Republican trouble" was the MI-11th. My measure for "Republican cataclysm was the MI-8th.

Mike Bishop's district was, I think, as tough for him as the 11th was for Epstein. Five Thirty-Eight gave Mike only a 1 in 3 chance to win it. If he does win, it is a mark of how much better a candidate he is, with important name recognition coming out of years in the State House and Senate.

Why "selectively leak" them? Why not just vote straight up to make them public?

Saint Croix said...

Get this: Kobach won the Republican primary against the sitting governor, Jeff Colyer. It was a very close primary election. He won by 191 votes. As the Secretary of State, Kobach was in charge of overseeing any recounting of the votes.

Obviously, he should have recused himself. He announced he would not.

Anyway, if he's wondering now why so many Republicans in Kansas decided to stay home and not vote for him, wow.

This is a guy whose claim to fame is election integrity and doing away with voter fraud! "I'm going to be the final say on whether I won the election. No need to recuse myself because I trust myself."
