Celine Dion is a super-hero who bestows gender privacy on babies... with her new fashion line.

This weird commercial is worth watching — if only for the expression of philosophy:

Gender privacy for babies... and older kids... with stuff like this:

ADDED: At the shopping site, called CELINUNUNU, the brand explains itself in the kind of prose I've seen too often on wall cards at art museums:

CELINUNUNU liberates children from the traditional roles of boy/girl, and enables younger people to grow on values of equality with the freedom to strengthen their own power of personality based on mutual respect.

The brand flows on the axis between the values of education and empowering dialog. We believe that an educational experience is possible through children’s clothes, because fashion builds concepts deep within our minds and changes thought patterns. It can create equality, and grow the emotional intelligence that drives the practice of responsibility, freedom and flexibility of thought....

The dialogue between clothes and creativity/art amplifies the discussion about a humanistic education, which is gender-free, strengthens the power of personality, and gives the spirit space to grow. This is the education that fashion can instill, based on the concept of equality and respect for mankind.

CELINUNUNU empowers these forces of creativity and imagination, inspiring the freedom of the spirit and an empowering dialog for all.

Because everything is possible, equally.

So, what mental and physical attributes of gender: masculine and feminine, are established in Nature, and negotiable in society? And what cause(s) is there to normalize the correlation between sex and gender, male and masculine, female and feminine, respectively?

Let me show you Derelicte. It is a fashion, a way of life inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores that make this wonderful city so unique. And I want you, Derek, to be the face... the image... nay, the spirit of Derelicte!

It'll be your glorious comeback!

Designer swaddling clothes. How did the Kardashians miss out on that sure fire bet?............I don't envy the kid who wears those pants to his seventh grade homeroom on Monday morning. Clothes like that trigger the worst impulses in bullies. Bullies, for their part, need a safe space where they can pursue their studies without being set upon by fashion forward trend setters.

I'll be honest -- the actual styles are bold and fun. Not going to pay $46 for a onesie, though.

Given her intentions, i find the line successful, and good for Celine.

In the context of ALL the colorful clothes that are in modern children's hampers, this palette is a neutral counterweight, black/white/grey and a bit of soft yellow. Cool!

On the other hand, given her intentions, I found the rethinking of skirts and dresses poorly explored, and only grrls were modeling them. Real possibilities fir breakthroughs there. Maybe next season!

Celine Dion sneaks into a maternity ward, and changes the male and female children of other people -- people she does not even know -- into gray, genderless creatures.
Bourgeois parents tend to minimize the gender characteristics of their children, working class parents tend to maximize the gender characteristics of their children. Nothing new here.

I do think there is something to be said for "just clothes" - I think Duluth Trading advertises their kids clothing as just that . . . kids clothing. No boy or girl designation.

I have two sons - when they were young I dressed them in standard stuff. I always tried to stay away for overly boy stuff and often bought very colorful non sex specific clothes from a local shop, still on Monroe St _ called Wild Child. I was happy that I didn't have to worry about overly girly outfits. The idea of dressing a 1 or 2 year old in a tulle dress or princess outfit just does not appeal to me.

There is a myth that a prepubescent child has no gender. Belief in this myth seems to increase with education level, e.g. it is a learned thing that contradicts experience.
It comes from the same place as the Gnostic belief in a pure spirit housed in a corrupt body.

My new fashion line intends to free children and adults from the arbitrary notions of identity imposed on them by their parents, and by the patriarchy and the capitalist system. A person who self identifies as Napoleon Bonaparte simply buys the appropriate outfit from my fashion line and then is able to dress as Napoleon. Parents, family members, teachers, etc, are well advised to sublimate their desire to impose an artificial and arbitrary identity (through such innocent seeming comments such as, "No honey, your name is Ann Althouse, not Napoleon Bonaparte") threaten to cause deep psychological damage to these children. Also available, fashion outfits for those who self identify as Jesus, Johan Sebastian Bach, Teddy Roosevelt, Rasputin, Queen Victoria, and Nelson Mandela.

When I was in elementary school in the 60s, in a rural Wisconsin school district, for several years there was a "blue jeans" club. The only requirement for being in the club was wearing blue jeans and a white shirt to school, which many of us proceeded to do for a long time -- boys and girls. That was also during the era of pixie haircuts for girls. Plus ca change.

I think our farm mothers liked the pixie cuts because they required virtually no care.

From the book The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image:
Of all the sacred cows allowed to roam unimpeded in our culture, few are as revered as literacy. Its benefits have been so incontestable that in the five millennia since the advent of the written word numerous poets and writers have extolled its virtues. Few paused to consider its costs. . . . One pernicious effect of literacy has gone largely unnoticed: writing subliminally fosters a patriarchal outlook. Writing of any kind, but especially its alphabetic form, diminishes feminine values and with them, women’s power in the culture. […]
Literacy has promoted the subjugation of women by men throughout all but the very recent history of the West. Misogyny and patriarchy rise and fall with the fortunes of the alphabetic written word.

Celine is justifying abandoning her children for her singing career.

"But, dear, I'm only a fraction of your life! Mommy's got a 30-city tour coming up. The nanny, what's-her-name, will take care of you.

"Oh, and you don't get to choose your clothing. Mommy's fashion adviser will do that for you. And no wire hangers!"

But this was not her first stab at inappropriate contact with children. Remember her picture book with Anne Geddes where she was holding bagged babies?

I presume this is a Universal Truth that is not limited to Omaha and Trois Rivieres. That all humanity needs to get with the program of not telling kids their gender, simply because they seem to have certain biological aspects.
So ....... given that the future is not going to be found in a few upscale kid clothing boutiques in Brooklyn, but is rather, demographically speaking, in Pakistan or the Congo, maybe Celine - if she Truly Believes - can focus energy on actions that will change the traditional cultural norms for those communities where there are actual large numbers of children. I mean. what's 1 kid in Brooklyn, when you got 1,000 kids in Karachi?

This strikes me as utterly insane with a touch of evil, but, sadly, I am sure it has all been focus-grouped and tested and millions of people will react positively.

Some strange person breaks into the newborn nursery where my child (or in my case, grandchild) lies, and starts throwing crap all over the babies, I damn well want them terminated with extreme prejudice.

Doubly so if they play the celebrity card.

I suppose this commercial makes sense and appeals to actual celebrities and our overlords who don't have to worry about things like hospitals because for them it is all private and bespoke, but that just drives home the gap between them and the rest of us, and what they really think of us.

Martin: your comment prompted a recollection of the famous AGW ad campaign "no pressure" which was quickly memory holed. Blowing up a kid for an act of non conformity, as determined by the enlightened teacher, apparently didn't play as well as was originally thought.
