"Federal authorities made an arrest on Friday in connection with the nationwide bombing campaign against outspoken critics of President Trump..."

"... a significant breakthrough in a case that has gripped the country in the days leading up to the midterm elections. It was not immediately clear who had been taken into custody, but a man was arrested in Florida, just north of Miami, three law-enforcement officials said. One of them said the man was in his 50s. Florida news organizations reported that the authorities had surrounded a white van with Trump stickers on it."

The NYT reports.

ADDED: The WaPo article does not mention the Trump stickers on the van — "Man in Florida arrested in connection with mail bombs sent to public figures." Key sentence: "fter news of the arrest broke, FBI agents and other law enforcement personnel could be seen in news footage draping a blue tarp over a van in a South Florida parking lot."

AND: Can you see the Trump stickers?

MORE: Info on a specific person at various sources, including Heavy. It says he's a Republican and "a promoter, booking agent and choreographer of a male stripping show as well as burlesque shows in the Miami-area."

Not only brand new, they cover every window except the windshield. They are also so nicely aligned - not like the nut jobs out here in the Pacific Northwet, who seem to purposely stick them on all catawumpus all over the back of their car - on the paint and back window.

They are too perfect, too nicley applied, and there are not any on the paint. What is this whackjob - leasing the danged van? And the van is in really nice condition - also not a hallmark of most whackjobs.

It is all too perfect - the perfect caricature of the 'EVIL TRUMP GUY'.

Color me skeptical - I want more evidence and facts.

Re the FBI and Wray -

In related news from last week, or probably related, and little noted, the DOJ filed a response of summary judgement in a FOIA case seeking removal of redactions in the Carter Page FISA documents. The DOJ argues that doing so would amount to obstruction of the Mueller investigation. The threat is clear, as also the conflict and where the sides line up.

This is the DOJ openly threatening Trump and Republicans re declassification.

If Rosenstein is still willing to make threats, then its clear where his creature Wray stands. The battle of Trump vs the deep state is still on.
I have been telling you all along this whole thing is a desperate fight against a powerful and amoral enemy conspiracy. You cannot trust any Federal Agency.

I've never noticed anyone here in this state on the open roads of this major metropolitan area, up and down the front range - drivers of cars or vehicles with that level of pro-Trump sticker/poster. (or pro any candidate)

I respect freedom of speech and expression, but that level of adoration for any politician is creepy.
I think it's weird how people worship politicians - and I say that about both sides of the spectrum.

The public has a very vague idea of the conflict, what is important and what isn't, where the sides really line up, and even the stakes of the game. The "issues" the media creates are, all of them, fictional, irrelevant, and deliberate smokescreens.

The politicians know where their graft is coming from but none seem to turn on the hand that feeds them.

Trump is sort of a turncoat to the elites. He was never really a member like Paulson was.

I wonder what Paul O'Neill thought but he seems to be a member in good standing.

Paulson is the guy who took TARP and made it into a piñata for the banks. He is the guy that Codevilla wrote this about

As over-leveraged investment houses began to fail in September 2008, the leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties, of major corporations, and opinion leaders stretching from the National Review magazine (and the Wall Street Journal) on the right to the Nation magazine on the left, agreed that spending some $700 billion to buy the investors’ “toxic assets” was the only alternative to the U.S. economy’s “systemic collapse.” In this, President George W. Bush and his would-be Republican successor John McCain agreed with the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama. Many, if not most, people around them also agreed upon the eventual commitment of some 10 trillion nonexistent dollars in ways unprecedented in America. They explained neither the difference between the assets’ nominal and real values, nor precisely why letting the market find the latter would collapse America. The public objected immediately, by margins of three or four to one.

When this majority discovered that virtually no one in a position of power in either party or with a national voice would take their objections seriously, that decisions about their money were being made in bipartisan backroom deals with interested parties, and that the laws on these matters were being voted by people who had not read them, the term “political class” came into use. Then, after those in power changed their plans from buying toxic assets to buying up equity in banks and major industries but refused to explain why, when they reasserted their right to decide ad hoc on these and so many other matters, supposing them to be beyond the general public’s understanding, the American people started referring to those in and around government as the “ruling class.”

TARP was the real "tell" about who ran the country. Bill Clinton once hinted at it saying, if reincarnation was real, he wanted to come back as the Bond Market.

Trump was a brassy guy like Rodney Dangerfield in "Caddyshack."

He knew the secrets but didn't respect the code of behavior.

And here we are.

"He really couldn't find his niche in life, and I guess he found it now," Valentine told the newspaper. "Back in the '90s, he was running around from Minnesota to the Carolinas to Florida. He was like a gypsy."

Photos and videos posted on what is believed to be Sayoc's social media accounts in 2016 show the Florida man attending pro-Trump rallies, where he often sported a red MAGA hat and — at times — posed with Trump-Pence campaign signs. The Vault Dweller said...

I'll admit when this story of the delivered bombs first broke I was suspicious of it as well. There were lots of oddities to it: multiple EOD experts on TV weighed in saying that the bombs didn't look like they would work; there was seemingly childishly foolish conflicting messaging on the bomb packages which had right wing imagery but also had the return address listed as Debbie Wasserman-Schultz; also atleast one photo of the packaging showed non-postmarked stamps suggesting it never went through the mail system; and the targets themselves seemed like not ideal targets for a right-wing motivated terrorist to target. Questioning the story at that point seems reasonable and perhaps unreasonable to not question it.

That being said, they now have a person in custody, with fingerprints and DNA evidence linking him to the packages, who has a long criminal history, apparently including making at least one bomb threat in the past, and he has an established social media record and apparently well-decorated fan indicating his fondness for Trump and dislike for mainstream media and democrats. Unless we are entering Hollywood movie levels of deceit and trickery I find it hard to see how this isn't the guy and that his apparent motivations aren't his actual motivations for doing what he did. I don't know how you can get a patsy to take the heat for a crime that will likely wind up with him spending the rest of his life in prison. And dupes make very bad patsies. They tend to fall apart under interrogation when it becomes apparent the person doesn't even know or have the capability to pull off what he did.

Now there is definitely still lots of questions to ask, like how did the packages get there. Were they hand delivered? Were they mailed? IF they were delivered was this guy working with anyone else? Also it may turn out that the bombs would never have worked and this is just a dumb and crazy guy who constructed cargo-cult bombs. But unless some new evidence comes forward I think maintaining a belief in a false flag operation is far fetched.

CTH now has a post on the case.

Sundance is struck by the same statements of Wray about the devices.

Initially Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated Mr. Sayoc could face up to 58-years in prison under the indictment. However, that statement was later corrected by DOJ spox to be a maximum of 48-years was possible from the current charges.

This is particularly curious given the very carefully worded statement from FBI Director Christopher Wray about the nature of the device(s): “energetic material that can become combustible when subjected to heat or friction.” While Director Wray went to great lengths to state the devices were “not a hoax“, if the device was an actual explosive device the charges for each of the incidents would equal a life-term.

The terminology: “energetic material that can become combustible when subjected to heat or friction“, could literally mean just about anything from CoffeeMate powered coffee creamer, to any other powered combustible.

As former federal proseuctor Andrew McCarthy noted, if the mailed IED devices were “functionally explosive” they would fall under the category “weapons of mass destruction” [defined here by U.S. code] and the indictment would include 18 US Code 2332a [SEE HERE] The absence of this charge infers the devices were not functionally explosive

Also:

The window covering (as photographed) on the front passenger window would NEVER be allowed in Florida. All jurisdictions including Florida Highway Patrol would force the removal of those window stickers as a vehicle violation and obstruction of view.

That vehicle couldn’t operate on the road in Florida for more than a few days without being caught and cited.

Very fishy.

The Vault Dweller said...

Why would he do this if he is not crazy ?

Well assuming he isn't crazy, he has to be at least strongly emotionally agitated to do something like this. So let's assume he is genuinely a Trump megafan. He probably would have been following lots of what Trump says as well as other right wing media. There are lots of stories showing how people on the right are subjected to harassment, intimidation, and violence from the left. This could range from people hounding a husband and wife going out for dinner, to conservative speakers being chased off campus, to kids getting punched in the face for wearing a MAGA hat, to the attempted mass assassination of Republican congressmen. Now let's say our suspect, thinks the root cause for all this is left-wing leaders vilifying the right, painting the right at large and politicians in particular as evil, racist, vile, nazis etc. The targets of the bombs are all people who have done this to some degree or another. He might want to send them a warning and scare them to show how easily the violence they are instigating against the right could easily come back at them.

But I don't know. At this point I will just wait for more evidence to more fully flush out this story. But I agree there are still lots of questions. Where did he get his materials, where did he get his 'bomb-making plans' if he had any at all, why was at least one package not postmarked, who delivered it if it was delivered, are there other people involved, did he talk to anyone else about sending bombs to people even if it appeared to be in jest?

That's also why her absurd exegesis of Muddy Waters today, coming amid her equally phony promotion of Bob Dylan, just advertise a morally vacant outlook, casually encouraging the Trumpists while oddly feeding their ignorance. There are better ways to see.

Arashi said...

No single person is. We have 12 packages, sent to various states - suposedly through the USPS, some of which did not have sufficient postage on them. For all of them to show up in a few days of one another, they would have to ahve been sent over a several day time frame. You can get a good estimate of the normal delivery time frame on the USPS website and use that as your guide.

So the devices would need to be sent out over maybe a week? There should be cancellation stamps on them and there should be internal tracking in the USPS for them.

We need more data.

I have to abandon my 4 chan hoaxter theory.

Now I'm back to Reichstag fire. In that theory the effective part of the Reichstag fire was set by Nazi agents. These agents had recruited a feeble-minded Communist arson freak who was taken inside the building at the same time as the Nazis were there starting effective fires and left to scatter arson materials about, to start small ineffective fires and to be quickly arrested. He never doubted that he was guilty but, in history, the Reichstag fire has come to be seen as a false flag incident staged by the Nazis. It aimed at building public support for Nazi attacks on civil liberties. The question in a false flag op is - who benefits? This incident is being used already by the press to demand that the press, John Brennan, and others, receive no criticism. I expect that there will be other "October surprises" but that they will be believed and that they will followed by "November Surprise Part 2."

Trump is loved and revered for his rhetoric, his followers love the non stop demonizing of others. It was spite and hatred that got him where he is and is why you folks voted for him. There’s no longer any slipsliding away from what you people did to this country.

Three fundamental mistakes in these sentences, one apiece. First, we do not love Trump for his rhetoric. Chuck (capital 'C') makes that mistake, too. We love him for the enemies he has accumulated, and the way he drives them to do ever more stupid things. Second, to the extent that "hatred" got him elected, it was hatred of people so lacking in personal integrity that they thought the blatantly corrupt and stupendously incompetent Hillary Clinton would make a competent president. Third, what did we -- and Trump -- "do to this country" besides improving the economic lot of people at the lower end of the economic ladder? Unemployment is at a half-century low.

Trump's voice is not as loud as liberal rhetoric has been for decades. I'm fine with unstable people taking political action, since you seem to be fine with it.

For every conservative politician shot on a baseball field, we should agree that a democrat should be shot.
For every conservative run out of a restaurant, we should agree that a democrat should be run out.
For every conservative passer-by hit in the head with a bike lock, we should agree that a democrat should be hit in the head with a bike lock.
For every conservative's window smashed, a democrat's window is smashed.

If people claim that literally all the violence is occurring solely on the left that is incorrect. However the lion's share certainly does. Also the left likes to point out a couple of protesters at trump rallies that get manhandled, yet for some reason we never hear about right wing people showing up at left wing rallies to instigate things. The left has the much larger problem with violence. It is probably because so many on the left are certain that they are the good guys and the right are the bad guys, whereas it is more common the right to view the left as dumb and wrong but not evil and bad.

In our sojourns to and from MT, we have been pulled over several times for overly tinted windows in our Tahoe. Latest was in MT this summer, but also have been pulled over in ID and UT. The back windows are legally too dark in these states (we got it at a police auction in PHX. We think that it was tricked out like an Escalade by gang bangers, which is why the cops had the vehicle). My partner needs the tint to prevent reoccurrence of skin cancers. The MT state trooper told us to get a doctor’s order, which we can submit to them, and that will keep them from pulling us over as often. I should note that the state troopers in these states have had apparatuses. That tested the windows for being too darkly tinted, which suggests to me that pulling us over was not the only time they did this sort of thing, but, rather, there was some frequency to it.

The window covering (as photographed) on the front passenger window would NEVER be allowed in Florida. All jurisdictions including Florida Highway Patrol would force the removal of those window stickers as a vehicle violation and obstruction of view.

No this is false.

Think panel vans. No side windows. Perfectly legal as long as you have side mirrors. Even the back does not require a window, or is OK to have it blocked, as long as you have side mirrors.

Correcting this is not a big deal, its just that if you're wrong on facts, the entirty of the argument goes south too.

Loud, yes, but hateful, no.
I see Trump saying that there were good people on both sides in Charlottesville, which is true without a doubt, just as there were bad people on both sides.
I then see the media saying that this means that Trump supports nazis, and of course it is a moral duty to hate nazis.
How insane do you have to be, BTW, to see some Sons of the Confederacy protesting against taking the statue down, and some nazis protesting against taking the statue down, and when Trump says there were good people on both sides, you assume he's talking about nazis and you scream "Nazis! Trump says that their are good nazis!"
Jesus Christ on a surfboard you Lefties are !@#$% nuts.
I see Trump saying that many illegal immigrants are criminals, which, again, is undoubtedly true. I then see the media report that Trump has said that all illegal immigrants are criminals, which was not what he said.
It isn't Trump that is dividing Americans. It is the media, which long ago decided that half of Americans were wicked while the other half were angels -- and of course the media put itself on the side of the angels

Make things better, and he has done. The leftists and the media escalates to actual hateful rhetoric with calls to actual violence.
