"An explosive device was found on Wednesday morning by a technician who screens mail for the office of Hillary Clinton..."

"... a law enforcement official said. A similar device was also sent to the office of former President Barack Obama. The official said the devices were similar to one found at the home of the billionaire philanthropist George Soros on Monday.... That device was constructed from a length of pipe about six inches long filled with explosive powder... Mr. Soros, who made his fortune in finance and is now a full-time philanthropist and political activist, is often a subject of the ire of right-wing groups. In recent days, some have falsely speculated that he funded a caravan of migrants moving north in Mexico."

The NYT reports.

Interesting to see the caravan woven into the speculation. The caravan seems to be powerfully helpful to the right wing.

ADDED: Yesterday, I blogged a WaPo article about the caravan and noted that the most-liked comments over there are working on a conspiracy theory that says "GOP operatives" funded the caravan. This morning, I'm reading a newer WaPo article — "How the migrant caravan became so big and why it’s continuing to grow" — and the same thing is happening in the comments. Here's the most-liked one:
Why isn't the media digging into the possibility that Trump's administration is behind the caravan? The timing of its formation right before the mid-terms seems totally suspect to me.
Maybe just a troll, with trolls doing the up-voting. Or just a sarcastic comedian.

George Soros can be described in many ways, but “philanthropist” isn’t among them. This will turn out to be a false flag operation; if a Republican had done it, the bombs would have done their job.

I think the caravan has made Trump's wall much more likely to happen. I never much cared for the idea of a wall but now I'm rethinking the issue. Since this story about the explosive device is from the NYT I automatically question whether it, and the story about Soros, are true. If the stories are, I am truly glad that these devices were detected and taken care of.

Funny. Maybe I've just seen too many things in my life, or it's the era we live in, but my first thought when reading this was that it's too perfect a set up for the Dems to portray the countryside as filled with masses of white supremacists. Same thing with the racists robocalls going out in Florida supposedly targeting repubs to vote against black Gov hopeful Andrew Gillum.

I just can't help thinking that this is the low warfare we're in now. Dems could be arranging those calls so very easily. As they could also arrange to have an 'explosive' sent to, but stopped short, of reaching Hillary or Obama. I mean- I don't see any Republican sending a bomb to Hillary or Obama. Every time they speak, it drives up Republican vote attention.

Between the bombs and robocalls, I just smell Democrat dirty tricks all over it.

Or- throw in how easy it is for a foreign dark op to arrange any of this: China, Russia, Iran- anybody who wants to foment more angst in America would find this just too easy.

As I said, I can't take any of what I see at straight value anymore. To me Occam's Razor points to the Dems. They can arrange it, they have the most to gain by these things.

Agreed - how do they know?

Complete lack of evidence?

Look, we know the primary group that is helping organizing caravan logistics -- Pueblo Sin Fronteras.

Non-New York Times USA Today link

The case that the right makes for ascribing this to Soros is that Soros does fund a number of pro-immigrant groups. Money being fungible and activists being joiners, some of his contributions to groups a, b, c, can be argued to indirectly fund groups x, y, z. (The idea that Open Society money is being directly funneled to caravan organizers has zero supporting evidence, nor does it reflect the way that grant funding organizations even work). Here's a key paragraph from Influence Watch about the last caravan:

In Spring 2018, hundreds of migrants from Central America approached the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum in the United States and threatening to enter illegally if their request was denied. Pueblo Sin Fronteras organized the caravan in conjunction with the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project.[10] [11] The CARA coalition consists of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, the American Immigration Council, the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association, all groups advocating for legal status for illegal immigrants and expanded immigration overall.[12] These organizations have been funded by a number of major left-of-center grantmaking foundations, including the Open Society Foundations, MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, and Carnegie Corporation of New York. [13] The caravan eventually halted in Mexico City on April 4 instead of reaching the United States border.[14]

Note trickle-down nature of this conspiracy. Pueblo Sin Fronteras obtains support from a coalition of immigration-reform groups. These groups have obtained funds, over many years, from big foundations, including the Open Society Foundation.

If you follow the footnotes neither footnote 10 or 11 actually supports the assertion made in the article -- but again, the CARA connection would hardly be surprising. Offering lobbying and legal support is what CARA does. That's your George-Soros-Funded-Conspiracy.

Interesting (not really) that the NYT reporting seeds the article with (1) the statement that Soros is often subject to “right wing” attacks and (2) the statement that the caravan is “falsely” speculated to have been funded by Soros.

Did the NYT investigate and prove those two things, or should we say (like CNN and MSNBC do) that the NYT claims “without evidence” that these things are true.

I have to say, my spidey senses are tingling. These “explosive devices” (Soros and now Clinton and Obama) could be the work of a right wing nut, but it sure seems more like a page out of the left’s playbook. I would NOT be surprised to find out (if we ever do) that they are hoax acts. Done by lefties to make it look like right wing violence. Lefties are famous for fake hate crimes and staged bullying in an effort to feed a narrative.

And the left is losing their shit over the media talking about mobs and violence and it’s all lefties, Antifa etc. they NEED some reports of “right wing” violence so they can keep saying it’s on “both sides”. It isn’t, but that’s what their narrative needs to be. And they only need to keep up the charade until Election Day. Then if the hoax is exposed they’ll bury the story. Right down the memory hole....

I could be wrong, but I seldom am.

It's certainly possible that this could be a "false flag" since it almost certainly helps that Left's side of the argument (that the Right is encouraging more actual violence than the Left so that therefore they're somehow "better", I guess). But it's also possible that it's just a derranged oestensibly right wing nutjob that's responsible too.

Either way, unless and until they find out whoever it is that is actually responsible I think people will choose to believe whatever they want about the actual motivations of this bomber and it probably won't move the needle much one way or the other.

The political tension in this country has been ratcheted up to such a state over the past few years that the (hopefully) tiny fringe of dangerously unstable whackjobs on both sides could be agitated to more extreme actions like this. It's entirely possible that this sort of thing could happen a lot more often in the coming months. And predictably each side will claim that this escalation of violence is all the other sides doing of course.

All powder is explosive.

Not true. Many, such as sugar, flour, talcum powder, or baking powder, are explosive only when mixed with air. When not mixed with air (such as when they are in a pipe), they are not explosive.

Gunpowder, and similar modern variants, are explosive on their own, and can thus be used in a pipe bomb.

Note that I don't trust the media to make the above distinction, so it is possible the pipes where filled with a basically inert substance that the media framed as explosive in order to make the threat sound more serious than it was.

The guy doesn’t directly fund this stuff. He donates to organizations (some of which he has people set up”) and those organizations often donate to other groups.

So asking him if he has funded it is useless. The answer is no as to directly funding migrants and likely I don’t know as to whether any group he has directly or indirectly donated to.

Always worth a laugh when Pence tries to support the president and ends up looking like a fool when the president does an about face. Meanwhile, Pence says that it is inconceivable that there are not some people in the caravan that have middle eastern ancestry. Evidence? Are we to assume they are terrorists? This is beginning to sound like the Warren controversy. How much middle eastern blood means you are middle eastern, and how much middle eastern blood means you are likely to be a terrorist?

Then Pence shamelessly lies and says that we stop ten terrorists or potential terrorists per day at the southern border. In fact, head of homeland security said that we stop ten terrorists or potential terrorists per day trying to enter the US from anywhere. Slight difference. I assume most of these people are on a no fly list.

@ Craig

The caravan is suspiciously moving faster than possible by walking and you seem incredibly incurious about how, who or why.

he average person can walk about 3 miles/hour on flat, easy ground. Therefore if you can keep that pace up for 12 hours, you could potentially walk 36 miles.

36 miles in 12 hours 1000 miles / 36 = 27.77 days.. Round up for the math challenged (YOU) it would take 28 days of hardcore walking 12 hours a day to go 1000 miles. 28 days! Maybe they all have magic Ruby Slippers?

Now, try to wrap your head around the other logistics of all those people walking to invade the US.

Water. Sanitation. They have to poop someplace. What an environmental disaster.. FOOD. Where are their blankets, sleeping bags. Diapers for those "supposed" children. Extra clothing....they don't seem to be wearing rags. Medical supplies for their blisters from walking. Who is providing all these supplies. Who is bankrolling this circus? Do you even care?

Do you really think they are all just marching along and making waaaay better time than the Pioneers did on the Oregon Trail? It's F.M. (fucking magic)

In 28 days without bathing, pooping, eating, sleeping? And you aren't even curious about how they managed to make 1000 miles in just a few days?

You will believe anything.....won't you. I bet you are still butt hurt over Hillary.

What scintilla of information exists to suggest Soros did or even might have funded them?

Well, we sure as Hell know that SOMEBODY is or a bunch of SOMEBODIES are funding this fake caravan. There is no way that this is a true "caravan" of refugees, fleeing suppression, that isn't being funded and photo oped as a ploy to affect the election.

Don't you even WANT to know? Or are you just accepting the pablum being spoon fed to you?

If they were a real group of refugees, they all....ALL....would have gladly taken up the offer of the Mexican Government to give them shelter and refugee status. They would have taken the first offer.

But Noooooo. They are just going to shoulder onto the United States.....while putting swastikas on the US Flag and burning it. Yeah. Real refugees. Striking out to the Promised Land that they obviously hate so much, wearing pre-printed T shirts with political slogans in ENGLISH. Of course, they will love the free benefits, welfare, foodstamps, medicaid, SSI etc etc etc etc.

Michael K said...

There is evidence of Soros funding the people who got this started, like the Honduras politician supported by Obama,

The group called Pueblos Sin Fronteras may be funded by Soros.

After she saw the images of the group on television, she typed "caravana migrante" into Google and saw that the migrants were expected to reach the Guatemala-Mexico border in two days, on Oct. 19. She paid about $10 for three separate bus tickets, traveling for 16 hours, making it to the border on time to catch the caravan.

So, who is feeding and providing services ? Still not clear.

Pence said it is Venezuela and could mean Russia nd China.

In fact China owns 49% of Venezuela’s state run PDVSA energy production. A collateral system where Beijing takes oil as payment for prior loans the Maduro regime cannot pay back. With the crippling treasury department sanctions President Trump put on Venezuela last year, Trump has punched Maduro and Xi-Jinping hard.

Motive ? Maybe.

The caravan was organized in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on October 14 and refugees entered Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, Mexico over the weekend. I made a map.

Also worth keeping in mind: Refugees were fleeing Honduras before the caravan was technically organized. Refugees entering Mexico today are not necessarily the same as those that left San Pedro Sula 10 days ago as the number of refugees has fluctuated a lot.

Suppose I wanted to make it look like violent Right-Wing Fascist Criminals were trying to kill me, but the Right-Wing Fascist Criminals would not play along? Well, I could just plant a bomb in my own mailbox! Yeah! My own!. And then blame it on those RWFCs. But if I were going to do that, I would want to use a special kind of bomb that didn't go off. Henry said...

@DB@H -- I added Tijuana to the map. That literally is thousands of miles.

Based on past caravans, some portion of the refugees will eventually make it to the US-Mexico border. Some people currently in Ciudad Hidalgo may well get bus or truck transport and get to the border before the election. Some may hitchhike. That would be a small number.

Given that there are refugees already at the border, and refugees in-between, and human-traffickers doing their thing, it's pretty much a game of speculation.

The point made here that you are tying to blur is that the media more than smothered us with the Heather Heyer story - with layers and layers of guilt trips blaming anyone in the orbit who had nothing to do with one crazy driver.
It was a festival of media driven "Anyone not a democrat must be a white supremacist" crapola.

And that is the point - Inga. The media dropped the Steve Scalise story like it never happened.

It’s pretty amazing the level of sarcasm that is being seen here on these threads. I can only imagine if these devices were being sent to conservative public figures. Seriously, what is wrong with you people?

Matt Sablan said...

Inga: Ricin WAS sent to people on the right, not that long ago. Earlier this month. For the most part... the left responded by ramping up the rhetoric and making excuses for harassing public officials.

People aren't treating the mail bombs seriously because, for a year or so now, the left has downplayed violent attacks on conservatives and the like -- and so the new rule is that public officials are allowed to be harassed and attacked. People who called the Congressional Baseball shooting terrorism *were mocked* by the left.

The people on the right saying it is a false flag are, I think, setting themselves up to be wrong -- it is probably a flat out crazy person like a lot of political violence. But, the left's rhetoric is why the right is responding in kind.

Michael said...

The caravan, of course, is a joke. No way will they make it to the border. Too far. Like the last one it will Peter out without fanfare. And Republicans are smart enough to have had the caravan underway six or eight weeks ago when there was a chance to actually walk that distance. The caravan will have to cover over 100 miles a day to make it by election time. No possible way.

Yancey Ward said...

Here is what you would be writing if the devices had been sent to conservatives, Inga:

.....................

It is the same thing I have seen you write about conservatives being harassed and threatened in public settings during their private activities. If it turns out that the person sending these "bombs" turns out to be a leftist perpetrating a hoax, what will you say then?

We on the right tend to view these things as hoaxes because, more often than not, such things turn out to be exactly that- false flags, and that applies to both sides of the coin. We at least take the thought seriously rather than run around with our heads cut off.

I've gotten to the point, unfortunately, that I consider the media to be unreliable. I am quite certain that many reporters would blatantly lie to me to push whatever cause they support, and I am quite certain that many reporters are so bad at their jobs that listening to them is actually worse than ignorance. I suppose I should state the obvious: do not send bombs to anyone, ever.

Not too long ago, in a rural town not far from me, a leftist gay person made some shocking accusations: He had been targeted by conservative bigots who literally held him down and carved anti-gay slurs into his forehead. And there they were, the carved words in his forehead!

Shock! Outrageous! Evil, evil conservatives!

Two weeks later, after diligent police work, the culprit what done the dirty deed was found! It was.... drum roll, please..... the very leftist gay person, who carved the words in his own head so he could blame conservatives. He admitted he had done it.

These bombs didn't go off, didn't hurt anyone, yet Inga's here saying that no one can ever complain about leftist violence ever again, and Republicans are all evil monsters, etc etc etc. Why on earth should anyone believe that Republicans or conservatives sent these, when the vast majority of alleged "conservative" attacks, racist things, etc have been hoaxes and leftists making it up? Democrats commit 100% of the violence against Republicans. And they commit about 80% of the violence against Democrats and blame it on Republicans, until they are found out. This sure sounds like part of that 80%.

Even if it isn't a Democrat false flag thing, the left has supported political violence for so long with such enthusiasm how can any of them complain if it starts going back in their direction? Soldiers shooting at an enemy cannot complain if they start shooting back. Only leftists seem to think that the rules are "We get to beat and mob and be violent all we want, and Republicans only get to be targets and can never, ever fight back!"

I can tell this much from the picture.

It's a fake explosive device. Wire going in both ends. Gonna need one helluva DC or AC current to get any kind of heat needed to explode anything, and there isn't enough battery power in that getup to get that kind of current. That and current would follow the path of least resistance- head straight to the walls of the iron pipe and flow through it. If there were an actual detonator or fuse, the wires would be going in the same end.

Looks like it was built by clock boy.

Their being fake raises the probability that the sender is doing it as a false flag- the story and the resulting hysteria is the purpose.
