The high school official told the 17-year-girl to "stand up and move around" so she could see if her nipples were still showing...

... and then offered her 4 adhesive bandages to X out her nipples. The girl, Lizzy Martinez, had left off wearing her bra that day because a sunburn (we're told) made the bra unusually uncomfortable.

From the NYT, "Is Your Body Appropriate to Wear to School?":
“She told me, ‘I’m thinking of ways I could fix this for you. She said, ‘I was a heavier girl and I have all the tricks up my sleeve,’” Ms. Martinez said....

The incident happened two weeks ago — Ms. Martinez’s initial tweet about the incident went viral — but the backlash is still going strong. On Monday, Ms. Martinez and some of her classmates held a silent protest in support of “the destigmitization of natural bodies.” Despite threats of disciplinary action, about 30 female students opted not to wear bras, and a number of students decorated their backpacks with Band-Aids in the shape of an X. One student wore a shirt that read, “Do my ni**ples offend you?” (The asterisks were hers.)...

In the case of Ms. Martinez, for example, the school is “foisting this notion that unrestrained breasts are sexual and likely to cause disruption and distract other students,” [said lawprof Meredith Harbach]. But this kind of messaging that targets young women — your skirt is too short, you look too sexy, you’re distracting the boys — “deflects any and all conversation about appropriate mutually respectful behavior in schools between boys and girls... Who is disrupted actually? It’s Lizzy. Whose learning experience is impacted?.... It doesn’t sound like other kids had a major disruption, but she sure did.”...
Meanwhile, women whose nipples don't show are getting injections to produce those "Kendall Jenner" bumps because they love the look. This amusing video was in the NY Post recently:

Much nicer than breast implants, I think. I'd love to see the trend change from giant enlarged breasts to classic fits-into-a-champagne-glass breasts with distinct nipples. It's a sporty, healthy, youthful look that I encourage.

I'd like to see an end to this idea that, even if you don't need support, you have to wear a bra because you've got to give the impression of not having nipples. It has to be a padded bra too, or it won't work, and the ridiculous alternative is to put stickers on. This is America, people.

Bonus: Here's Snopes investigating the question "Were champagne glasses modeled on Marie Antoinette's breasts?" The answer is no, but there's a reason people thought about it: The glasses seemed to represent the perfect size and shape for a breast:
No one knows how this rumor began, but a good guess would be someone’s drunken observations on the shape of the glass coupled with a dollop of male fantasy sparked it off.

The coupe is further associated with ladies’ breasts by the oft-repeated claim that prospective members of the Folies Bergere dance troupe were subjected to a champagne glass test — a coupe fit over their naked breasts determined who was eligible. Provided the young ladies’ charms remained within the glass, they were still in the running; if their natural wonders overflowed, it was, well, tough titties for them.
ADDED: Some people seem to have forgotten what champagne glasses look like. Indeed, we've been disciplined into using champagne flutes, which preserve the bubbles for abstemious sipping. But people used not to worry about the champagne going flat. They giddily guzzled and reveled in the fast popping bubbles hitting them all over their face. Think of Marilyn:

I suspect it was a woman who mentioned the champagne glass because it seemed classy. Male fantasy had nothing to do with it.

Frankly, I think we should all consider whether Kendall Jenner asks the paparazzi to wait a few minutes for her to stimulate her nipples before they take her picture.

It's not the nipples but that it makes the breast more imaginable as naked, rather than just a dress shape the bra-makers are selling.

Foisting?

Where the fuck are we? Of course breasts are sexual, and of course they distract boys (and presumably lesbians). That's simple common sense and human nature. Have we really reached the point where asking girls to wear a bra to school is offensive? How about panties? Can we at least require them to wear panties?

Yet one more reason to bring back segregated schools.

Really, when you think of it rationally, it’s odd to so sexualize the breasts. They are only biology’s way of feeding one’s young.

Pettifogger said...

Whether distracting boys should be grounds for consideration I'll leave for another day, but distracting the boys does not necessarily entail disruption by the boys.

The one thing I remember about one woman in my law school class some 45 years ago was that she typically went braless. There was no disruption, but I doubt I was the only male whose attention was diverted.

Freeman Hunt said...

Aren't champagne glasses tall and thin? Is the idea long, thin cylinders? Hm. That doesn't seem right.

Oh, the coupe glass.

Pettifogger said...

Inga says breasts are ONLY nature's way of feeding the young. Among humans, I think the "only" is transparently false.

Ann Althouse said...

"Aren't champagne glasses tall and thin? Is the idea long, thin cylinders?"

People usually say "flutes" for the glasses commonly used today. Back when "champagne glass" was used to express the idea breast size and shape — as recently as the 1970s — the wide hemisphere shape was standard for champagne. Then everyone got instructed that flutes were more correct and you basically only see flutes today.

The reason for the wide open glass was that it maximized the fizziness of the champagne and people were into the blast of bubbliness to the nose and face. But that meant it would go flat more quickly. If you want to sip champagne, the flute made more sense. But look for pictures of Marilyn Monroe giggling and guzzling. That was a "coupe."

"Colorful Women's Adhesive Lingerie Tassel Heart Bra Nipple Cover Pasties Silicon" [In 5 colors!] eBay item number:311844776635.

The highest priced item was $107.48 plus $14.32 shipping from the UK:

"AGENT-PROVOCATEUR-SWAROVSKI-CRYSTAL-LEATHER-CONSTANCE-NIPPLE-PASTIES, eBay item number:331895083042.

But sadly, no pointy nipple pasties. ("Point" only describes the number of points in star pasties.)

Seems to me that a lot of money could be made to satisfy the worldwide voracious unmet demand for pointy pasties. (AKA falsy pointy nipple enhancers.)

Except, perhaps, in Sharia land.

Boys should never look at girls, or talk to girls, or notice or react to them in anyway. Girls would never dress in a way to draw attention to themselves. Girls are asexual and teenage girls would never try to sexually attract their male peers. Unlike teenage boys, teenage girls never push the boundaries of appropriate behavior or dress.

I'm 100% sure the problem is going to males acting inappropriately. Females would never attack each other over the attention of male.

Personally, I'm waiting for someone to make men's pants like these and for a group of smart ass guys to wear them into school some day.

Jupiter, I’m speak as a female who isn’t in the least bit attracted to other female breasts and find it humorous that western males are so smitten by them. And your overreaction to my comment is just stupid.

We don’t see the same sort of obsession with breasts in other cultures. As for the biology of breasts and breast tissue and the reasons only human females develop protruding breasts before childbearing and even retain protruding breasts after menopause, here’s some interesting reading. I fully understand western human males see female breasts sexually, but sometimes it’s not always rational. Native women of other cultures sport bouncing, drooping, lactating, breasts uncovered for all to see and males of the society don’t will nilly bend them over and have sex with them on a regular basis, because the sight of the breasts were such a sexual trigger. Maybe these cultures are more rational about human female breasts than western males.

Possible evolutionary reasons why human females have permanent breasts

Some women have chosen to perceive this as an effort by men to control them. In reality it's one half of the agreement, the other being that men will enforce women's objections when men look at them more closely than they would like.

I'm fine with the new standard. But I wonder if women have thought this through. For example do they understand this gives their classmates license to discuss their nipples? If you can show them because they aren't sexual your classmates can discuss them because they aren't sexual. Nothing prevents them from discussing who has the largest ears. Maybe these women who like to push the boundaries are ok with this outcome, but I suspect most simply haven't thought about it. But even if we presume they all have who authorized this small group of radicals to speak for all women?

Here’s an example of the irrationality of western culture when it comes to breasts. Women were shamed into not nursing their babies in public, even if they covered themselves while doing so. Until recently women were relegated to nurse their babies in dirty unsanitary public restrooms. Women were in past years persuaded to not nurse their children because it might have ruined their youthful beautiful perky breasts. Women undergo painful surgery to enlarge their breasts because our western culture deems a woman more beautiful if she has large breasts.

The irrationality surrounding breasts in our culture is an anomaly, ancient women and men and other cultures didn’t seem to have a similar obsession with breasts. Look at this poor young lady who was shamed by the principal, because her nipples would be distracting, isn’t that silly?

Gahrie said...

“Almost as silly as a 17 year old girl going to school without her bra on.”

This is ridiculous. Are male youths not capable of self control? If a young female without a bra on is so sexually triggering to a young male that he can’t control himself, maybe his parents didn’t do such s good job raising him. There are bras out there that don’t have padding and the nipples can be seen protruding even through the bra. What would you suggest? A uniform policy for school girl’s bras? Maybe maybe a burka...

Did I say it was dumb? Did I say breasts were SOLELY for breastfeeding? Your misrepresenting what I said doesn’t prove your point. The problem here with many of you folks is the propensity for extremism and for jumping to conclusions, based on your misperceptions. It's uncanny that this happens in many discussions in these comments threads. I’d ask what the hell is your problem, but I know what it is.

It's because I recognize that many straight men find boobs and nipples very sexy that I think teenage girls should dress with a bit of modesty at school. Only a dolt, or Inga (but I repeat myself) thinks that that means requiring a girl to wear a burka.

Dress codes in high school are appropriate. I also hated the fad of boys going around with baggy pants which covered only half their ass and displayed 4 inches of underwear. Girls should learn that it's possible to dress attractively without having your boobs and ass hanging out. What they wear outside of school is their own business.

Breasts are a trait of the female sex, and feminine gender, that serve two roles in Mother Nature's fitness function. One, they are visually attractive, and stimulating, to the male sex and masculine gender. Two, following choice, conception, and birth, they deliver nutrition to a human life outside her mother's womb, so that she may evolve, be her mother and father's partner, and continue the Duck Dynasty.

As a fetish... sort of, kind of, not really. I wonder if Mother Nature designed women to have twins.

Moron, let me spell it out: expecting boys to NOT have a sexual response to boobs is prudish. You think it's OK for the girls to dress with tits showing because it's the male reaction to breasts that is all wrong, and the girl cannot, under any circumstance be criticized for dressing inappropriately for school.

That's a really idiotic position and you have only made yourself sound dumber as this thread has progressed.

All humans start out as females (check your nipples).

It's not until the fetus organs develop and the hormones are released, that the sex is assigned by the chromosomes controlling them.

Fat men actually start releasing female hormones and can develop breasts, and the penis begins shrinking and is no longer able to flow any more blood than a large clitoris.

It goes downhill from there, but it never gets so bad your testicles fall off.

Inga said...

Yes. I didn’t say they were SOLELY for feeding young, now did I? the word “only” is oftentimes used instead of “merely”. But you chose to believe the version of the word usage that serves you better. And what you’re trying to do is find something... anything... to disagree with me on. You chose to misunderstand, you choose to misconstrue, you choose to misrepresent. This is the way you’ve operated for all the years I’ve read your comments here on these comments threads. Here is a comment about this thread found in a different thread this earlier today.

“She's on another thread at Althouse saying a woman's breasts aren't sexual and their only function is to produce milk for the newborn.”

I said if one was rational, one wouldn’t oversexualize breasts as they are merely nature’s way of feeding one’s young. I give my personal opinion All.THE.TIME. One of the main reasons I’m here and if you don’t like it you can kiss my royal ass.

I said that they are not animals and can control their sexual responses. All humans are conceived as either the male or female sex, then the genetic map, in tandem with the environment, produces a masculine or feminine gendered, respectively, life form. Dullard, I'm not saying that they'll jump her in the hallway. I'm saying it's distracting. I'm also saying adults should act like adults and set rules about what is appropriate dress for school and what is not. Setting rules and boundaries for teenagers is not being tyrannical.

It took about three minutes to find an example. Remember both the Handmaid's Tale and her assertion that Akin's beliefs are normal for Republicans the next time she pretends there's a difference between herself and the far left. While she expects people give her that treatment she doesn't offer it to others.

It helps to remember Inga changes her handle regularly and I suppose if my grasp on reality was as tenuous I would also. She let the loon out a little too clearly which is why she hid as "Unknown" for a year or two. that's why it's so amusing when she judges others as extreme.

Intercourse through the anal aperture and in the rectal cavity. That's liberal (i.e. divergent), but perhaps not progressive (i.e. monotonic).

So, normalization (i.e. promotion), tolerance, or rejection?

I feel very sorry for anybody who has an addled-brained liar for a mother.

If a male was wearing pants tight enough it could be seen he certainly would be asked to change. Not only would he not tweet about it literally no one would defend his clothing as a civil right.

It's bizarre extremists have to invent these persecution fantasies. There must not be any important sex based discrimination left, otherwise why would they focus on this nonsense.

From what men have told me, their teen selves were embarrassed when they got boners in class and did not want their classmates or teachers to know about them. They weren't proudly showing them off.

Also, getting an erection are not something a teenage boy can control. Wearing a bra to school is something a girl can choose or not choose to do. So the comparison, like many comparisons Inga makes, is a dumb one.

Inga was married and she tells us she has fucked lots of handsome men, but frequently it sounds like she never met a man in her life or had any discussions with one about what it was like to be a teenaged boy.

Also, I have a son and I have three daughters. No 500 children, as much as I loved having children and making them. I’m quite aware of what teen boys go through. My husband had already died by the time my son, the youngest was a teen and I was both mom and dad to him. He taught himself how to build an engine and did all the typical boy stuff, even without a dad and yes, he confided in me. For the record, no I didn’t cheat on my husband. After he died I was still a young woman and I wasn’t a nun.

"So Exiled, what do you think about bras that aren’t padded? Must girls wear padded bras so as to make sure they don’t show the nip? "

LOL, move away from the computer, get out of the house and go shopping. Boston Store and Macy's and Kohl's all carry bras designed not to show the nipples and they're not padded. Bra technology has changed a bit since the 1950's.

If the girls want thinner, sexier bras they can wear those outside of school. Why would you want to wear a very revealing bra to class anyway? You're not going to school to show off your bra collection. Again, what they wear, or what their parents let them wear, outside of school is nobody's business. The school has the right to set some parameters.

Funny, I don't remember The Right To Show Nips being a big issue when we were in high school. Of course, I went to an all-girl's school (and we couldn't wear our skirts more than 2 inches above our knees - and not because adolescent boys would be driven mad by the sight of our legs) but the public high school kids had to follow a dress code too. We didn't like it - well so what? Not the adults.

I find it annoying that anytime someone tries to set a standard of behavior or dress nowadays, they are immediately accused of victimizing some kid who should have the right to do and wear whatever she wants. At my old job, a recent college grad showed up for an job interview wearing a very short purple dress with sequins on it and a guy showed up with a eyebrow piercing. And they were applying for the administrative office of a hospital, not a barista job at Starbucks! That is something people in other businesses have told me too. Nobody had taught those kids that you can't wear whatever you like whenever you like and there are things that are inappropriate in certain settings.
