Can you believe that an article titled "Why Oscar Attendees Will Be Wearing an Orange American Flag on Sunday"...

... does not explain why orange is the chosen color?

I get that it's an "anti-gun violence" thing, but why orange? And why an orange American flag? Why change the color of the flag, and why change it to orange? I mean, Trump is said to be orange, so... I don't get it. You can't mean to be saying Trump's America, so what's up?

I click through to People and get only: "Orange is the color of solidarity in the fight against gun violence in America." So, that's just restating the question.

I googled around a lot until I figured out that "The Wear Orange campaign began in 2015" — before Trump became President. Orange was the color that some people chose on one occasion to honor one shooting victim. Their reason? Maybe there was no reason at all. I'm still not seeing any.

Elsewhere, I see (from a year ago), advice on how Trump could become less orange (because orange seems to be a skin color that you can criticize people for having and give them unsolicited advice about changing):
Twice a day on Saturday and on Sunday, he should take Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and fresh lemon juice—both lightening agents—and mix in a bowl ‘til it resembles baby food. Using his little hands, he should apply this cleansing salve all over his face and let it set for 10 minutes. Rinse and repeat, morning and night. If he follows my instructions, it will lift the orange to reveal his actual skin tone.
Yes, that's skin lightening advice (in Vanity Fair). How can that be okay? Trump brings chaos.

Intersting comment...since my link was to that very CDC...

The very and apparently increasingly politicized CDC.

But it's easy to pick on them. Trump's cronies are doing their damnedest to make sure that agencies are purged of scientists and staffed with ever greater numbers of political appointees.

So you're not denying that Trump cronies have purged the agencies of scientists and hired twice as many political appointees?

It's good when Republicans realize they lack the evidence to protest the lower than ever degree to which they've mismanaged something.

Sigh. No matter how many times one debunks the bullshit, there's always someone like Toothless to spout the same old erroneous crap as though it was gospel ordained by the Creator.

"I could imagine a Republican actually having the guts (bear with me now) to attend to a first-response scenario in a school shooting."

The rule is charge a gun, run from a knife. I don't know why that can't be taught to high school students. If a bunch of us charge him maybe he'll miss (there's nothing magical about an AR or any other gun -- you still have to aim, and that takes half a second or longer), or maybe he'll hit something nonfatal, or maybe he'll be discombobulated enough to mishandle his weapon and cause it to jam (the train to Thalys).

"What civilian use do you see for that thing?"

Depends on the chambering. Chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor or a .30 caliber round it makes a good hunting rifle. If I lived where grizzly bears were common I'd want to have an AR platform chambered in .308 Winchester. I'm aware that the majority of AR platforms sold are chambered in 5.56 NATO, which makes the gun mostly suitable for home defense. Yes, I know. There are many people who are experts and who recommend handguns for home defense. I suspect if you took a vote there would be a plurality for handguns, but a marked (something like 60-40 or 65-35) preference for long guns, since long guns cover shotguns (generally too heavy and too much kick for a petite woman but some households use shotguns as their primary home defense weapon) as well as rifles. The advantage of the AR in 5.56 NATO over other long guns for home defense is light weight, low recoil, and adjustable butt stock, making it very suitable for women as well as men.

Or perhaps Toothless doesn't think women should be allowed to defend themselves.

Michael K: There was an artificle in the latest Garand Collector's Club newsletter on the Turkish M1s. The lot they just received had a wide mix of conditions, with some being almost all original. The lowest serial number found so far was in the 900 range. After they are cleaned and rebuilt, you will have the opportunity to buy one and depending on the grade, not pay an arm and a leg. I purchased two rack grade M-1s about 5 years ago. Both are in great shape - not original of course. They shoot incredibly well.. I was also lucky enough to get a M1 Carbine a few years ago thru the CMP. I'm not sure where mine was returned from, but it has a Winchester receiver. It also shoots great, and is a lot of fun. As a bonus, it is a great home defense rifle. I like it more than the M4 Colt. I am thinking hard on getting my paperwork in order to try to get a 1911 when they are offered after this year. What a piece of history that could be!

From an internet question site:

"Bloods rep Red and a certain set: Bounty Hunters wear Green. Crips rep Blue and certain sets have other colors: Grape Street-purple, and Hoover Criminals-orange. MS-13 wear blue. Latin Kings wear black and gold. Vice Lords rep black, yellow, and red (sometimes), C-Notes (not a big one) wear the Italian flag colors, Insane Northside Popes (not a big one) rep light blue, White Power Skinheads usually wear white and sometimes black, Juggalos rep orange and red, Irish hoods rep green, and Insane Southside Popes (again Not a big one) wear black and grey. These are only some of 33,000 street gangs in the USA (if u don't live here this answer is f-Ed) and the ones I grew up knowing about."

So the Holltwood Special People are honoring the Hoover Criminals.

As Ice-T --rapper, (former?) gang member, actor and Geico commercial star -- once rhymed:

Wrong night, wrong time
Wrong fuckin' part of town

But not our luck
Tonight we was real fucked

@John Henry, the reason why most of us are opposed to licensing is that it would be very easy for the licensing agency to set the threshold so high that hardly anyone, including the likes of Kim Rhode and Julie Golob and Jerry Mikulick would not qualify.

And as the father of a son with only one usable arm, your suggestion that a handicapped person does not deserve to have guns for recreational use (target shooting) or self defense leaves me very cold.

"The face of the American gun owner is changing.

More women than ever are picking up rifles, shotguns, and handguns. And target shooting is one of the fastest-growing female sports.

Female participation in target shooting in the U.S. has nearly doubled in the last decade, growing to nearly five million women since 2001.

"All of us are brought together by the love of the sport," says Lesa Ellanson, a certified shooting instructor for the National Rifle Association's "Women on Target" program.

To those who say guns are masculine, Ellanson says, "It would depend on how you define femininity. I think a capable woman is the most feminine expression of power that there is."

But liberals don't like capable women. They want them to be mewling whining victims.

Registered, licensed guns aren't a good idea if the constitutional purpose is to facilitate armed resistance to a despotic government.

The government can (at some trouble and expense, certainly) later simply decree that they be turned in, on pain of punishment. Many will be "lost", or stolen, or never registered, but still, it is a reduction in the capacity to resist.

You Americans have to decide on the purpose of the 2A. The clear intention originally is, I believe, as I put it above.

Probably the one where you regularly "infringe" the "gun rights" of inmates in prison and those held in police custody.

What part of no right, no thing, being absolute is too difficult for you? Even the Heller decision isn't so dumb as to make such a declaration.

Or did you want to argue that yelling fire in a crowded theater is another one of your absolute rights.

You gun nuts really are dummies. NO wonder you have greater faith in resolving problems through violence than in resolving things through discussion, reason and debate. To expound;

In the Philippines gun ownership was always restricted. Licenses were granted on application with the municipality and the police, and guns were supposed to be registered with the local police.

In 1972 the then-President organized an executive coup-de-etat with the cooperation of the military and declared a state of martial law. My dad, uncles, etc., all were informed, within a week, that they had to turn in all their registered firearms at their local police stations, on pain of imprisonment.

But I definitely can't do any wonders for you in a crowded, rowdy frat house. Notwithstanding the fact that those are the types of places that I'd avoid entirely anyway.

Are you one of those women who harbor rape fantasies? What proportion of sexual violence is committed by someone you know vs. someone you don't? I'd think a great deal of it. Good luck resolving that shit with a gun. A gun does appeal to you emotionally, though. There's no arguing around that. And that's the part that matters - to you. Not to the dead kids that you don't give a shit about.

Perhaps you do.

THe "discourse" is so far out of whack that Gahrie actually proposes that - unique among rights - a right to gun carriage is absolute. Even Heller wasn't stupid enough to attempt to make that case.

But if you yokels endorse gun carriage as an absolute right I can see why you're so supportive of mass proliferation as to make restricting the supply available to criminals impossible. I just don't see why you don't argue for arming the prisoners, then - before they do the killing. I mean, an absolute right is an absolute right, is it not? Do we keep criminals from speaking their minds? Should they not be able to "defend themselves" - if abused by another inmate... or by a guard? This happens a lot, actually. Slutshamed on mainstreet knows because she's been in prison, where the lesbian that made her her bitch abused her.

In the end, there is no such thing as "reason and debate" on matters of power. There never has been. In "nice" places there is an implicit balance of power, where the costs of violating norms are unofficial and embedded in the culture. This works, under substantial constraints, such as a shared culture.

The recent Breitbart article on Denmark describes the best case well. But this assumes cultural unity and no great conflicts of interests. It SEEMS that everything is reasonable... until an outsider comes in and starts to take advantage.

In other places there is a dominant, unquestioned power faction that runs things, mostly, and keeps conflicts among other tribal or interest grouos limited through suppression or by mediation. But the interests of the power faction come first. This is the global norm.

People are shits by nature, and behave well only under certain circumstances. They are also excellent at rationalization.

Everything in politics is about a balance of power. Reason and debate are illusions, mainly meant to mask the ugly realities. Balances are struck depending on who can threaten whom with what degree of damage.

This includes, of course, "non violent" means like propaganda. Also costs imposed by regulation, economic boycotts, etc. The scope and variety of tools used in human conflict are vast.
But at the bottom, anything that does not directly involve violence still rests on an implicit threat of violence.

The libertarians like to make much of this for their own purposes, many of them eccentric, but it is true nontheless. Power does indeed come out of the barrel of a gun.

So says a guy who also said this:

Senator Kay Hagen (Dem, NC) sent me an email yesterday evening. Well, that's a bit of a stretch. Actually her newsletter maven included me in the tens of thousands of other registered Democratic voters in the distribution list. Care to guess the subject? Why it was the sequestration and its dire consequences of course, especially on defense matters.

Here's the money quote:
"With little time left for Congress to act, I’m deeply concerned about the effects that sequestration would have on our state. While reducing our national debt is one of my top priorities, indiscriminate, unprioritized [sic] cuts on the backs of our service members are not the way to get our fiscal house in order. The packs they carry and the burdens they've shouldered are heavy enough without the threat of sequestration. Sequestration would have harmful effects on our armed forces by diminishing future military readiness and jeopardizing our country’s national security. It would also threaten our state’s fragile economic recovery."

Well, my BS detector started to buzz like a Geiger counter dropped in the Hanford B reactor, so I decided to reply, silly me.

F*** you, Kay. You and Lord Zero have put us this position with your profligate spending on key interest groups (people who mostly don’t pay Federal taxes, btw) at the expense of hard-pressed middle-class people like me who can’t even afford a new car (and can hardly find a decent and cheap used car thanks to “Cash for Clunkers”, thank you very much, Barack Hussein Obama) If you think the sequestration, a mere 2.4% of last year’s record spending of 3.6 X 10^12 USD is tough now (one must realize how f’ed we really are when deficit spending is more easily handled using scientific notation), what will you say when the interest on the federal debt becomes the biggest line item in the budget… Budget? What the hell am I thinking, there hasn’t been a budget resolution brought to the Senate floor in almost four years -- in direct contravention of the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 and the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974, I might add. Fortunately for you and Harry Reid these two federal laws have no sanctions clause so you’re in no danger of the leg irons and orange jump suit awaiting me if I stray one iota from the laws you like to impose on the little people (you remember, the people whose duty is to pay up and shut up?). But I digress, the fact is the sequestration is minuscule in relative terms to what little people like me have to endure in this low-to-no growth economy your lord and master promised to solve in his first term, not to mention the creeping inflation that makes it nearly impossible to travel or even afford to eat. I’ve pared back my lifestyle at least 150% from the Bush days, therefore I don’t see why a bunch of smart people with fancy degrees can’t make do with 97 cents where you had a dollar before. Don’t knock it before you try it, you might even discover the Government can live a bit more cheaply and still not actually starve (I’ve learned Spaghetti-Os three nights a week helps make the occasional meal out with friends more affordable.) ....

etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum ad nauseam.

Danes, for instance, handle government regulation very differently from the US. And I can vouch, largely, for Germany also. Just to point out differences in the state of mind.

In the US regulators will take vague laws, promulgate a vague regulation, assign open-ended liability to violators, will inspect (if they do) with a goal of finding violations (a sort of scalp-taking), which will be turned into a finding threatening fines, but not specifying remediations which will satisfy, which will then have to be litigated (if the victim can bear the cost), and etc., perhaps to be repeated at whim.

You are best off hiring a compliance consultant with connections with the regulator, who has kept up with case law and compliance risks. And those fellows have, of course, conflict of interest issues with everyone involved.

The Chinese just ask for money. They may, or may not, try not to screw up too bad, because that will raise a stink. Sometimes literally. That is, IMHO, more honest, though it doesnt work so well it doesnt cost much.

The Danes and Germans will show up, inspect, tell which things, precisely, need to be fixed and the best/easiest/cheapest way to go about it, and they will check back to verify that alles gut. And it is gut, and will stay gut, and you are gut to go.

The Danes don't need guns in order to, someday, shoot other Danes. They like the other Danes.

The Chinese can't have guns, but at least as long as they pay they can do all right. And if they were in their regulators shoes they would do the same. They dont actually like other Chinese, much, but they understand them thoroughly.

The Americans....

Boy oh boy, do you have a lot to fix. You actively prey on each other.

I wonder why the Militia calling themselves Minute Men had hidden their weapons, powder and lead underground in their fields around their homes when Paul Revere's message arrived in April 19, 1775 to prepare because the European World Empire in London had sent its Army to confiscate their firearms. Maybe registering their arms would have defeated those young farmers who had formed up at a rude North Bridge crossing the Concord River and stood their ground.

The British Army feared them because many of them were known were combat veterans of the French and Indian War when they defeated the French for the arrogant British.

Times change but nothing about men's motives have changed. We are divided still into Patriots and rich aristocrats paid off by the Tyrant in Europe.

I will believe something is a problem when those who claim it's a problem start acting like it's a problem. When the elite class, private and government, is no longer protected by people with guns I will consider believing them when they say carrying a gun does not improve safety. Now celebrities with armed bodyguards have to make the argument that their guards are cool and you are not. Their lives are more important than your family's.

Thanks Buwaya. Are Americans naive, easy prey because they can't tell who the predators are? The lawyers train to play both sides.

In the US regulators will take vague laws, promulgate a vague regulation, assign open-ended liability to violators,

A lot of this is due to the McCain Feingold law which made legislators fund raisers and made the staff the law writers.

You should read Dalrymple's essay, "The Uses of Corruption."

He compares Italy to Britain but the comparison works with the USA of Clinton and Obama.

Where administration is light and bureaucracy small, bureaucratic honesty is an incomparable virtue; but where these are heavy and large, as in all modern European states, Britain and Italy not least among them, they burden and obstruct the inventive and energetic. Where bureaucrats are honest, no one can cut through their Laocoönian coils: their procedures, no matter how onerous, antiquated, or bloody-minded, must be endured patiently. Such bureaucrats can

neither be hurried in their deliberations nor made to see common sense. Indeed, the very absurdity or pedantry of these deliberations is for them the guarantee of their own fair-mindedness, impartiality, and disinterest. To treat all people with equal contempt and indifference is the bureaucrat’s idea of equity.

That explains a lot of it. I will say that the Arizona DMV is light years ahead of California's in being reasonable and efficient.

So you see, Ritmo, the real solution here is for all of you to start treating each other with the courtesy, trust and consideration with which Danes treat each other.

An armed society is a polite society.

We saw "Death Wish " tonight. Pretty good.

Check out what passes for how to conduct one's life in a civilized society when you're a gun fetishist like "Hipster Vacuum"

I would pay for it for the pleasure of watching TTRs useless remains spalatteted across a street and then reading about the hilarity of how nobody showed up to claim the remains because not one person on earth thought anything of him other than what a repulsive pile of shit he was and how his erasure from earth was a win win for humanity.

Only someone with no sense of self-worth would write something that lurid and violent. But alas, he doesn't feel he has any worth, after all. All his worth is in his gun. He would feel it perfectly justifiable if someone did the same to him.

This is your crowd, Althouse folks.

Registered, licensed guns aren't a good idea if the constitutional purpose is to facilitate armed resistance to a despotic government.

Many years ago there was an article, long before the present gun hysteria began, titled "The Lw That Leaked" and it was about gun registration.

The movie "Red Dawn" also made the same point.

HipsterVacuum said...

I feel YOU have no worth. You're a worthless coward. A lowlife fetid pile of slime who should be stomped into oblivion. And nobody would care if it happened. The human race would cheer the end of someone as putrid and useless as you. You're a cancer on humanity.

Big Mike,

Sorry about your son. If he is physically able to shoot a gun he would be eligible for a license. My comment about handicapped had to do with driver's licenses. If you are physically handicapped in such a way as to be unable to drive a car, blind for instance, you can't get a license.

As for treating guns like cars and driver's licenses, I confess to trolling Squeamish.

You do not need a driver's license to drive a car. You only need a driver's license to drive a car on public roads. Some property owners might make having a license a condition to drive on their property as would be their right.

You can also own a car without registering it. You only need to register if you drive on public roads.

You can carry (transport) a car much anywhere in the US without registering it. You can carry it openly on the back of a flatbed. Or you can carry it concealed, in a box truck or van.

So registration and licensing would only be an issue if you want to use a gun on public property. States might grant unrestricted use permission in rural areas to anyone with a license but not in cities.

As a more general statement, I would be OK with owner licensing. That is, requiring a license to own a gun. The license would be conditional on demonstrating proper knowledge of gun safety and such. Once issued, the licensee could own as many guns as they want with no background check other than to verify validity of the license.

Possession of a license would not be tied in any way to ownership or purchasing.

I might go take a class and get licensed even though I have no particular desire to own a gun. Not scared of them, I have no desire to own a motorcycle either. I got both out of my system long ago. What I would like to see is a high proportion of the population licensed so nobody knows who has guns and who doesn't. I suspect that you and I are both firmly on the same nobody knows page.

I feel YOU have no worth.

No one cares what you "feel."

But keep having those feelings, you emotional little boy.

And keep speaking up for the violence of the gun fetish crowd. More people could stand to know just how violent you little children feel.

Your rant was as vulgar as it was violent. So basically its social value was entirely worthless.

You're not very used to people having any use for you, are you? That much is obvious in your comment.

Make sure you poll the rest of "the human race" so that you can get a chance to find out how much they disagree with your overwhelmingly violent feelings against me and anyone else sticking up for the rights of kids to go to school over your need to arm the people who feel they have a right to menace them.

You are a despicable cunt, you know that, right? Again, let me know what the world would be missing out on in your absence. This basically sounds like a fact that needs no more evidence, but feel free to search for it.

Well John, you admirably stand out among the crowd of wingers here by at least seeming to be concerned about gun violence and understanding the immature nature of most forms of gun enthusiasm.

But sadly, you're sort of failing on the lack of realism in hoping for high gun ownership rates.

Gun ownership rates have fallen to a low of 36% over a twenty-year decline. Nearly 20% lower than their high.

So apparently less people are interested in your gun-in-every-hand philosophy. They've got other things to do with their lives.

But don't let stop you in proposing another completely fantasy-based solution to the conflicts between 2nd amendment absolutism and the right most Americans feel they should have to not be menaced, assaulted and massacred by these toys.

Right. Chicago. Your concern for Chicago is palpable and legendary. As a political foil.

A challenge: Name a person you love more than your gun.

Bet you can't do it.

Ritmo goes full piece of shit mode.

I have a wife and two kids. My wife is 5' 100lbs. She carries and knows how to shoot. It puts her on level footing with democrat voters/criminals who tend to be much larger and stronger.

I know you would rather she was a victim of a crime than able to defend herself. It is why all of the democrat dominated cities like Chicago are murder pits. That is your ultimate goal.

You have lost this debate. The majority of American people see through little shit tyrants like you. Continue your spittle flecked rage against freedom.

Enough about those dead kids whose massacres you enabled. Tell us about your "freedom."

I don’t think Toothless gets the idea of male-female relationships in flyover country. Republican men love their wives; Republican women love being loved by their husbands.

I was right the first time, Toothless. You aren’t married because no woman is so desperate that she’d have you.

Very ironic to hear a certain defender of the permissive gun state to defend the DEA on the basis of its efforts to prohibit a non-lethal substance.

Gross ignorance. DEA does not "prohibit" drug use. DEA and all the entire body of law which prohibits those "non-lethal" yet deleterious and occasionally lethal substances are creatures of Congress. The irony is all in Ritmo's subnormal mind.

I'd to say this is an unusual Ritmo thread hijacking, but, alas it is not. It is all too typical.

Bingo. That's why he has the time to post here by the dozens, hour after hour, there's no woman in his life make demands on his time.

Very typical. Most trolls are undersexed and do their thing as vicarious revenge against the sexually fulfilled.

Hopefully, TTR is just a troll, because his rantings appear to be those of a lunatic who would actually go on a shooting rampage just to prove his point; the hatred spewed is very disturbing.

Ordinarily, it is quite easy to skip over such trolling behavior, but in this case it’s hard to do, and has detracted from the original post.

I’m actually interested on how Orange became the symbol , and for what exactly. My first thought was, as already noted, hunter orange. Kind of a ‘hands up don’t shoot’ symbolism for the Hollywoo crowd.

TTR: "Enough about those dead kids whose massacres you enabled. Tell us about your "freedom."

Well, it's a long story.....but a good one.

Let's start at the beginning. I was born a privileged white male (according to leftists) in the worst nation ever to exist on this planet (according to leftists), The United States of America.

Needless to say, I was provided a cache of weapons and a new Bentley upon birth (who wasn't?!) though I didn't come to appreciate these gifts until I was given control of my father's company at the age of 7.

Actually, it was my mothers company, legally speaking, but being a chick everyone knows it would have been impossible for her to run it! Naturally, when my mother turned 30 she was shipped off to a Nunnery so we could get some real work done.

Need I mention that our firm was a defense contractor supplying weapons to 3rd world nations that couldn't feed themselves and whose people had to flee to find a better life?

I thought not.

In any event, think of me as an early obama with a multitude of "Fast and Furious" Peoples Programs.

It was about that time that I learned of the heroic John Birch Society and their good works.........

I mean, unlike you, I don't give in to demands. (Which explains your confusion of pussy-whipped [i.e. you]with sexually desirable). But I would never pass up the opportunity to respond to your bitchy little yelps, whines and complaints with facts. You make it so easy.

And co-habitator or not, I can still tell how boring your home life is. Excitement for you consists of choosing a different flavor than usual at the corner ice cream shop.
