"It was incredibly uncomfortable. He was literally breathing down my neck. My skin crawled."

"It was one of those moments where you wish you could hit pause and ask everyone watching, well, what would you do? Do you stay calm, keep smiling and carry on as if he weren’t repeatedly invading your space? Or do you turn, look him in the eye and say loudly and clearly, ‘back up you creep, get away from me. I know you love to intimidate women but you can’t intimidate me, so back up.’"

So Hillary admits that she couldn't think of what to do under pressure. She needs a pause button. Is that like a reset button? There's no such thing. I mean you can vandalize the hotel hot tub to get a plastic button to call whatever you want — the Make Me President button — but it doesn't work.

More from the leaked excerpts to the memoir we're not all going to buy when it comes out in a few weeks:
"I chose option A. I kept my cool, aided by a lifetime of dealing with difficult men trying to throw me off."
The writer assumes the reader will not immediately think: Bill Clinton!
"I did, however, grip the microphone extra hard," she wrote.
The writer assumes the reader will not think: phallic symbol.
“I wonder, though, whether I should have chosen option B. It certainly would have been better TV. Maybe I have overlearned the lesson of staying calm, biting my tongue, digging my fingernails into a clenched fist, smiling all the while, determined to present a composed face to the world.”
If you present an endlessly smiling controlled face to the world and choose to say nothing, people won't know what you think, won't trust you, and — since you're asking to be our President — won't be able to rely on you to speak for us. If you're that afraid to come up with an apt response to someone who's being intimidating, how do you have what it takes to be President? You think if you said something, it might be bad, so best to say nothing?

Look how easy it was for George W. Bush to push back Al Gore's overbearing physical encroachment during a debate:

Perfect. That nod. Everyone laughed. Nobody thought Bush seemed unpresidentially peevish. I still laugh every time I play that clip. And I play it a lot.

UPDATE: I have more to say about "back up you creep" here.

There was another moment I remember from the Bush-Gore debates.

I don't recall the debate but the moment was during a dull Gore speech and Bush sitting on a stool, looked over into the crowd and winked at someone.

He was completely cool and I thought he was really in control.

I was not a Bush supporter and was a volunteer for McCain in 2000 but he was in command at that moment.

That was such a weird thing, that February Trump press conference (per the Althouse-embedded video). Hey, I didn't post the Trump presser video. Althouse did. It seemed to me that Althouse set the embed so that it was limited to Trump's tallking about the reset button. When the full video also has the laughable Trump statement about how his administration was running "like a fine-tuned machine." And then, after Flynn's departure came the departures of not one but two communications directors, Trump's White House Chief of staff, his press secretary, and his lead political strategist. Even if the White House staff was a "fine-tuned machine," it is unrecognizable as such now.

There was also Trump's howlingly bad claim about the historic size of his electoral victory, on which a reporter nailed him, mid-conference. Et cetera, et cetera.

Not misquotes of Trump; not any mischaracterization. Not leaks, or anonymous sources. Not the opinions of fathead panelists on CNN or MSNBC. Just going off of what Trump himself says, on the record.

It's just so unfair, and she's given so much of herself in the effort.

Hillary is still as phony as a three dollar bill, still peddling the lies that external forces (dark manly forces) have held her back all her life. Despite the fact she was given a huge opportunity as first lady and blew it by trying to take over health care in 1994. Despite the fact she was given a seat in a state where she wasn't even a resident as a "thank you" from the democrat-media complex in 2000 to set her up for a presidential run. Despite the world-wide name recognition she possessed she failed to even win the democrat-media primary in 2008, after 30 years of planning for it (which it seems should have been what we call a "clue" to the dense dyke from the Illinois burbs). Then despite having every media advantage, every demographic advantage (so we were told) and the all-important polling advantage (where they try to make her "inevitable" with all their statistical tricks) that has traditionally been used to cow opponents and dissuade rural voters, she could not pull enough actual votes outside of California to even make the electoral college competitive.

So everything she dishonestly scribes now will be a variation of "shoulda woulda coulda" and will only repel more people who used to support her and solidify the opinion of the majority who hate her lying ass and wish she would "go into the cornfield" with Robert Byrd and the other racists she admires so much.

Oh and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan's spell

And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singin'

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away

I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

Kevin, Althouse wanted to use a little snippet of a Trump presser to emphasize a point that she liked; something along the lines of yet another Hillary Clinton public relations misfire.

I chose to expand on that same video, not limited in the way that Althouse wanted to limit it, to make the larger point that there is almost never a time when Trump makes a cogent point and stops. Trump almost always steps in a giant pile of shit of his own doing. And that is what he did in that presser.

It's pretty goddamned funny to me that on the morning after Trump complained to the entire nation in a televised speech that the press is rotten because they take little parts of his statements out of context, the Atlhouse Trumpkins want to take only one part of his longer press conference (while excusing Trump for also leaving out the most inflammatory parts of his Charlottesville statements in his speech last night).

Much of that part of America sees no reason that the US President should bow or defer to anyone. Crooked Hillary that night showed that she likely wouldn't be any better, that these leaders around the world could easily intimidate her. If Trump could intimidate her without even trying, just by being big and male, what about all the leaders around the world who would actually try to do so? Sure, she got some sympathy votes, from voters (male and female) voting with their vaginas, But lost probably more votes of those voters (male and female) who vote with their brains or gonads.

Yes. I cannot imagine Trump doing anything other than bitching and pissing and moaning about how he has been treated. If Trump lives to become a former President, I have no doubt but that he will become the most notoriously loudmouthed, over-involved, self-defensive nuisance in Presidential history.

And given that Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton set new standards for being post-Presidential nuisances, if Trump were to exceed them, it would be a qualitative leap.

I always have thought that clip shows the moment when bush won the Presidency.

You might recall that the media was also full of talk about Gore changing his wardrobe and mannerisms to look more "alpha," the name Naomi Wolf comes to memory.

Given that all that was out in the open, Gore walking up to loom over Bush was all wrong--it came across as coached and manipulated, not at all the "real" Al Gore but the one the campaign consultants wanted to substitute.

I have also wondered if the Bush camp expected Gore to try something like that, and had discussed with the candidate how he might respond. Which would echo the Bentsen/Quayle VP debate in 1988, when the Dems had been pushing on Quayle's youth and inexperience (how quaint, after 8 yrs of Obama, but t was a different world), and Quayle's people had been pushing back with the example of JFK. It came out later that the Dems expected Quayle to play the JFK card if pushed, and edxacatly what Bentsen should say.

I would like to agree with this. I think that there is much truth in it.

But what about the argument that there was a lot of pressure on removing confederate monuments after the Dylann Roof murders in Charleston? Or the argument that what really precipitated the post-Charleston campaign against confederate monuments was not based on the rally, or Trump, but rather the fact that one self-identified white supremacist drove his car into a crowd, injuring many and killing one?

It's a good argument that Dylann Roof, and James Alex Fields Jr., had the most to do with the removal of the statues. By having created causes based on the martyrdom of their victims.

Sad because I know so, so many women who are much, much better than Hillary is at being a human, and being a leader. Of all the women in this country, there are an amazing amount who could have been a much better candidate.

Hillary was nominated because she's corrupt. Her corruption built through her husbands presidency, her so-called foundation that facilitates dozens of different financial deceits, her secretary of State position, all fed into countless villains paying for access and privilege.

She shows no political skills, no people skills, no emotional intelligence, she's intimidated, but probably not as much by Trump as by having to provide her own non-polled-yet reactions to moments. She needs a script to live, and handlers to shelter. She's the epitome of white privilege and whatever other privilege you can think of.

Of all the women who could have been great candidates, Hillary was nominated because she wielded power through her corrupt fortune, built on corruption, built for corruption.

That is a weird claim from you, Michael K. In the Quayle-Bentsen debate, Bentsen said, "I served with Jack Kennedy; I knew Jack Kennedy; Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine..."

And the simple fact is that Bentsen was in the U.S. House from 1948-55, and Kennedy was in the House from 1947-53. They did serve together, in the U.S. House of Representatives, for two terms and about four years. And I have no doubt that they knew each other. And what would be your basis for claiming that Kennedy was not a friend of Bentsen's?

What was it that Bentsen said that was untrue?

The way Hillary acted was the way her campaign decided that she would act at all times. They expected provocation from Trump and trained her in debate prep not to react. This is what it says in Shattered, the book about Hillary's campaign not written by her:

"Her team could be sure that he would say outlandish and salacious things, yell, and point his finger to try to rattle Hillary. Her job would be to deliver her punches and deflect his attacks without losing her composure. Hillary was painfully aware of the tightropes she’d have to walk, the same ones women in politics and business always had to tread with extreme caution. She’d have to be confident without appearing arrogant, defensive without being accusatory, and assertive without looking like a bitch. But in prep sessions dating back to the primaries, her voice, her body language, and her facial expressions often betrayed the traits she wanted to avoid in prime time. Dunn was so conscious of the damage that could be done with one bad look or one sarcastic remark that she devised a mantra for Hillary: “Demeanor is the debate.” Not only did Dunn say it, but it was featured on special one-sheet “debate on a page” memos that she and Klain gave Hillary on the day of each of the primary and general-election debates. “Happy to be there! But I'm in favor of Hillary re-enacting and freezing the Dems into 7:00, Nov. 8, 2016 with her. And why not have a sort of duet on primetime TV with her and Al Gore both up on stage claiming they were the real victors in 2000 and 2016? lamenting together the stupid Constitution which let deplorable flyover s---s have a voice that must be heard? Antifa could be a sort of dancing chorus wearing exciting Nazi-type clothes and moving about the stage assaulting people. The show could be called Crystal Clear Night. One of the President's key job is Commander in Chief. To protect us from the rest of the world. This is very important to the parts of America that vote with their brains or gonads, and not with their vaginas. Crooked Hillary's problem there was that males are just better at that sort of thing. There are millions of years of evolution behind that. Most everyone knows that instinctively. Her job was to convince the skeptical portion of Americans that she wouldn't run from her post at the first sign of danger (as Obama seemed to do). I think that she failed there.

Not all women are intimidated by larger guys moving in on them. Mother of my kid. My partner. Probably Sarah Palin. Margaret Thatcher. Etc. and, it wouldn't surprise me if it were hard to really intimidate Crooked Hillary. She probably would have stood up to those tin pot despots that Obama bowed and scraped to. But she would have to think it through first. The voting public doesn't see that, her analytical side.

We wouldn't want a President who is that easily intimidated. It would almost seem that the more strident the woman the more complaints about intimidation, thus admitting her weakness. A woman with real strength and savoir faire would have taken it in stride and even used her [dare I suggest it?] femininity to intimidate the offending male. More men are brought to their knees by female charm than by 'tough' talk.

What a weird comment. I voted for Trump, and have never uttered a single supportive or admiring comment about Hillary.

What your comment demonstrates more than anything is the warped, binary thinking among Trumpkins that the whole world is either for them or against them. To the extent that it is true, it is Trump's own abrasiveness (and his supporters' fanatical attraction to Trump's abrasiveness in particular) that gives rise to the division.

I'm not crying. I am putting as much distance as I can, between myself and Trump. I want to be out of blast range when Trump goes up.

I'm with you in being a little shocked that Hillary would choose to relate this anecdote at all (with that take on her internal monologue), but she and her associates must really think this is something that makes her look good--look better! I don't regret my vote for Trump. I am just sad that he was the Republican nominee. I never "supported" much of anything about Trump, apart from the fact that he was -- nominally -- "Not Democrat." The legislation, which was preferred by President Clinton and House Democrats, was passed by a margin of 275 to 151. The sponsors of the bill were Reps. Charles Norwood (R-GA) and John Dingell (D-MI).

Some House Republicans were quick to criticize the Norwood-Dingell bill and placed blame on its passage at the door of Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

I partly agree, but partly disagree.

First, I affirmatively don't want Trump to go down, and will actively support/defend him from the Get Trump crowd, which, as Achilles notes above, contains quite a few establishment Republicans.

But, even if somehow, some way he does go down, I'm not going to to simply stand by and tolerate Dem rule for decades. That would be disasterous for the country. If that were too happen, all sorts of political compromises will be made.

The first order of business is to thwart the "Get Trump" crowd, plain and simple, and not let Trump go down. That means retaining the GOP House Majority in 2018, and bird-dogging Mueller and the bogus Russian-Collusion hoax investigation.

If that happens, all talk of Trump going down will cease - at least until the 2020 election, when the Donald will be unleashed again in a reasonably fair fight, that he can win.

Hilary is entitled to a lot more personal space than most people need.

""@Achilles,they aren't traitors and it's way past hyperbole to suggest that they are."

I don't think the GOP Congress are traitors but I wonder if the Democrats might be.

Why did they employ those Pakistani IT staffers ? Why defend them when they were known to be misusing access ?

Why did DWS still pay that guy, Awan, after he had lost security clearance? Why threaten the Capitol Police chief ?

Andy McCarthy is suspicious of the indictment, which does not mention Pakistan.

Were those IT staffers working for Pakistan's ISI ?

The new leader of Pakistan is going to be hostile to us.

Pakistan’s political path took a twist in recent months with the ascendancy of charismatic sports-star-turned-politician Imran Khan. The fervent opponent of America’s war on terror used the courts to oust Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in July and is looking to use the momentum from that legal victory to propel him to power.

Mr. Khan has been on the political scene for two decades leading a small but vocal party opposed to what he sees as the crooked political dynasties of Mr. Sharif and the other established party.

Mr. Sharif’s removal has weakened the ruling party and thrust Mr. Khan and his Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party into real contention in elections due within the next year.

Mr. Khan’s surge is already shaping the political terrain by, among other things, pushing opinion in Pakistan more sharply against the country’s close security ties to the U.S. He advocates a sharp break with the U.S. antiterror alliance, spurning aid that comes with conditions that he says have proved too costly for Pakistan.

That's OK with me. I would cut them off completely.

In the meantime, I wonder if the ISI has been running our Afghan policy and maybe our Iran policy.

Perfect. As for Hillary, she and Bill are a matched pair forevermore.

>You guys are dinosaurs. If Trump goes down, Dems will rule for decades.

Trump is Trump, and for good or bad, he is not the Republican Party. He is the party of Trump. He does not appear to be building a party. Republicans at the state level have been their most successful yet. And until the Democrats change the message / strategy, I don't see any major changes. Trump may even do more damage to the Democratic Party. Trump keeps on smashing Overton Windows in the US Culture. And you have 3 1/2 more years of actions to reduce regulations by his administration. And who knows, may be Congress will even pass some needed legislation to help the economy?

More interesting question is what comes next for the Republican and Democratic Party? I believe both parties would rather forget about Trump.

I still have not figured out why did Hillary write this book?

I believe most people would she rather just go away.

Her reading on the audio book is awful. Who could listen to that?

Listening to Hillary read an audio book. Aren't there some world court rules prohibiting inhuman punishment and torture?

The book will make bathroom material.
I wonder if the book on tape will feature one of her character voices...or cackles.
