Sarah Silverman as Joan Rivers on "Saturday Night Live."

From last night's show:

And, yes, all the tags for this post are correct.

AND: Even better is the trailer for "The Fault in Our Stars 2: The Ebola in Our Everything."

That was Joan spot on. SNL is getting creative again.

And both of those are more important than the bit they did on "Whites", right? Telling whites their time is almost up? Saying they're goofy, and can't focus on serious issues because they're too busy trying to spend other people's wealth before they lose power?

Of course - Silverman impersonating Joan Rivers - THAT's the big story white supremacy says ,whites should use to distract themselves with, in America.

White people, and how their racism plays out, are as predictable as the sun rising,...

The Crack Emcee said...

White supremacy almost all over the web:

Feature every skit SNL did but the one critical of whites.

And still pretend like you're informing people of the important issues of the day.

Brain-dead,...

The Crack Emcee said...

"We're whites - and we're on top for now."

I dare you to point out a more important line in that entire episode - including in the Joan Rivers sketch everyone (white) is talking about.

Nope - all whites want to talk about, collectively, is everything else.

But they're individuals, and racism - or "The Man" - doesn't exist to make them all work together to blot the skit out of our consciousness.

It just never happened.

Talk about the dead comic instead:

That was so important to our lives,...

The Crack Emcee said...

"We've been on top,...for hundreds of years!"

Nobody needs to hear that,...

sane_voter said...

Wasn't funny. And I think I could have delivered the lines better than that. Cue cards must have been hard to read.

The Crack Emcee said...

This is how whites fight racism, right, Ann?

By ignoring the attempts to address it?

Joan Rivers is the big story.

Incredible,...

Spiros Pappas said...

We've been on top for thousands of years. Greek people count too when we compare the accomplishments of the various races! They also had slaves, but they were white.

The Crack Emcee said...

Oh, I get it:

Skits about white's racism are NOT funny!

To one group in America, that is,...

The Crack Emcee said...

Let's hear it for white's fetish for hiking and camping while the other Americans white's oppress die in the streets.

Whites!

The Crack Emcee said...

Spiros Pappas,

"We've been on top for thousands of years. Greek people count too when we compare the accomplishments of the various races! They also had slaves, but they were white."

Fool, whites were living in caves when blacks had already invented civilazation.

Sit down, shut up.

We're done with you,...

Your complaint is with the producers. I stopped watching at Weekend Update. Looks like another case of black people ordered to the back. Not by me. I'm just a person who clicked off when Weekend Update started with the cheap formulaic stuff.

The Crack Emcee said...

Attempting to prop up white's image after 400 years of their barbarity:

It's the American Dream come true!

Mark said...

Dude.

I agree with you 100% about how the Whites sketch was the one to talk about, funny and on point and truly what the old SNL was .... But going on and on in repeated posts is acting like the deranged guy with a 'the end is near!' sign ranting to no one in general.

It doesn't help your argument and is such a cry for attention that most reasonable people will run like hell other than engage.

Good luck, I have a good book I am halfway through and is more fulfilling than anything I have found here.

The Crack Emcee said...

Ann,

Funny, but the places that REALLY fight white racism - like Gawker - have it. What was their problem?

Wrong audience, probably.

Not many white racists are allowed to hang out there,...

Mark said...

And Ann - the scene Crack talks about was immediately after the Joan Rivers, well before the weekend update.

The Crack Emcee said...

Support Scott Walker!

That's how you fight white racism,...

madAsHell said...

Who is in yellow? Freddy Mercury?

yes

The Crack Emcee said...

Poor Scott Walker:

Blacks are being so UNFAIR - TO HIM!

Our hearts are breaking over it.

Have been ever since we met his staff and friends,...

The Crack Emcee said...

Blacks, of course, have ALWAYS BEEN TREATED FAIRLY.

So much so, just to balance the scales after 400 years, Ann can let it go to support Scott - he's our friend who needs her help.

Really,...

The Crack Emcee said...

His smile covers for the racism, and his stance on sex-sex marriage - you name it!

Scott Walker's our hero!

Because he m,akes whites feel are warm and fuzzy about America.

A place that's been good to everyone,...

Ann Althouse said...

"And Ann - the scene Crack talks about was immediately after the Joan Rivers, well before the weekend update."

Whoa! I guess I got the bowdlerized Midwest edition. The next skit for me was about soap operas with women supporting women, then some white boys in a band misnamed after a dark color, then Weekend Update.

I'm stepping over black dead bodies every day. I'm watching blacks get harassed by the police - for being alive.

And you want a cold, cool, reasonable response?

When any of those blacks I mentioned could be me?

White people are fucking CLUELESS to what they're saying in such a Holocaust-like situation,...

The Crack Emcee said...

"Hey, you Jews, calm down - it's just the gas chamber..

You don't want to look nuts, do you?

Whites will losde faith in your arguement.

Because that's what white "friends" do when YOUR life is in danger.

Such a help they are,...

The Crack Emcee said...

Oh - and whites ALWAYS respond well to a cool presentation:

That's why MLK was shot in the face.

And Ta-Nehisi Coates' 16,000 word essay on reparations really got a measured response from whites, didn't it? I think, here, it went something like this - paraphrasing:

"You fucking niggers are out of your minds and will never get a dime from us, no matter what we did."

It's so encouraging I'm getting criticized for trying to meet them half-way,...

tim maguire said...

There you go, Mark:

My "fellow countrymen".

And then they wonder why some blacks root for the terrorists,...

CWJ said...

"I'm stepping over black dead bodies every day."

Every day.

Spiros Pappas said...

TN Coates' argument for reparations can just as easily be applied to just about anyone. We all have ancestors who have survived holocausts and economic exploitation and whatever. The Black American experience isn't unique or more compelling then, say, the devastation of Armenia or Tibet. Black and White Americans should take a look around the world and stop being such myopic and narrow-minded losers. Get over yourselves, you're not being exploited if you're getting fat and collecting a welfare check.

The Crack Emcee said...

Spiros Pappas,

Re: "Oh, I get it:

Seriously, not trying to poke a bees' nest, but a general question:

I can't think of a white person I know that doesn't LOVE 'Blazing Saddles'. That movie skewers white racism, and now it is not uncommon to hear you could not make that film in today's society.

What changed?

Again: serious in question. I would make the argument that political correctness hampered rather than helped progress (much like the argument that the courts with Roe v. Wade only made the abortion issue worse) , but that is understandably facile.

So: what would 'Blazing Saddles' look like today?

You lose your minds when black people just complain verbally about being kicked. Imagine how tough it would be for you to keep your cool if someone was actually doing something to you instead of just talking."

I'm telling you, Crack, the Canadian atrocity museum is where your audience would be.

It's hard to find people who care these days, but they all care over there.

Mostly to get their group on top, but you have to take any interest you can get. They'll watch you closely.

Sarah Silverman, man she is not at impressions, at all. She has a limited comic talent and needs to stick to her own material.

That was painful. Was she trying to do Rodney Dangerfield or Joan?

As for Ava, why the shots are her? I always love her comment on Sinatra and Mia Farrow - "I always knew Frank would end up in bed with a boy"

I thought the Richard Pryor character was about as lame as could be. Richard Pryor was devastatingly funny. That guy was devastatingly boring. Why did he agree do do those lame little lines. Why did the rest of them agree to do the same thing? No edge. No surprises. Nothing politically deviant. Nothing interesting. Stale Corn Flakes with nothing on it.

You want to try to imitate Richard Pryor? At least bring Eddie Murphy back.

Just because Coates suggested it as an idea (reparations) doesn't mean that its a good Idea or is likely to be adopted.

Did Wittle Missy S. Silverman puke up shredded placenta over Mrs. Rivers white ermine coat, and graft the black tails onto the cheesy wig Melissa Rivers let her borrow? PETA probably paid to freezer burn/torch the Octopussies in the secret vault or all the witnesses cell phones had to be returned after the "play" catfight.
Or Planned Parenthood chipped in federal funds on the back nine.
"Black Dutch"=swarthy, calculated appropriation of white cultural norms or mores? We cut back to the blonde moron from Fox who forgot to unbutton her blouse, before the tackled paparazzi got distracted from taking a backwards face plant to catch see if the blonde was a really, really well-dyed, curly red[Bush]head. Back to Sir Emcee in the recording studio. Your thoughts on the differences between white supremacists and mutated Aryan radicals? Glutenin isn't alcohol-soluble, consequently all vodkas are gluten-free regardless of the source. Vodka derived from wheat can contain traces of gliadin, however. Fortunately glaidin has no effect on hypochondriacs since they haven't heard of it on Dr. Oz.

Well, in this day of speeding past commercials, I'm surprised they're still using that old gimmick, which I am more than used to.

But they had the fake commercial that was the "Fault in Our Stars" trailer, so I didn't notice I'd missed anything. And I went back and looked a second time after I was accused of skipping something.

There are none so blind as those who will not see. Am I right?

The "Whites" skit is pretty much a ripoff of SWPL.

That was an awful Joan Rivers sketch. Silverman isn't worthy of tongue-washing the corpse of Joan Rivers' feet, let alone trying to impersonate her on a show that's less funny than "Southern Fried Homicide".

Was thinking about irony this weekend.

Wikipeida, Crack: "...crack was the most prominent factor contributing to the rise and fall of social ills in the African American and Latino communities between 1980 and 2000"

And now we have a black guy taking the nom de plume "Crack" and "Master" (Master, does that crack any whips or ring any bells?) trying to stick it to the man.

And pushing the kinds of things that have crippled black America (http://online.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748704881304576094221050061598).

It's almost like he really, really, really wants to be a white slave owner in the Old South. Although based on the tenor of his posts, I imagine that some white guy with the tag "Master" would probably be called racist by Crack.

Betamax should start a "Quixote" character who responds to real, misinterpreted, or imaginary Crack comments (or some combination). Maybe riff a response to his own Crack simulation, taking Crack out of the equation. Maybe ascribing his simulation comments to Crack AND THEN responding.

That could replace about 40% of some of the insanity in these threads with some real and honest humor and "dialog" (monolog?).

why does Crack keep hawking the Coates article?

It's worse than that.

Crack used to continually reference how many actual words Coates used in writing the article as if it was important to note how many words a black man had written. Like it was an accomplishment!

Talk about self-inflicted bigotry of low expectations!

LOL

And crack didn't even realize it until it was called out by a couple commenters. After that he stopped doing it.

Pathetic.

Wow. That Rivers sketch was awfullllllllllll.

Brando said...

There's a lot of talk about how SNL sucks and hasn't been good since [insert time when critic was in high school]. I'd maintain that SNL today is as good as it ever was.

That's because it never was all that funny. On Netflix you can see entire episodes from earlier decades, even the acclaimed mid-'70s episodes. What you'll notice when you watch those episodes is that there is a LOT of filler--a lot of sketches that just didn't land, or ran on too long. Held up against a typical episode of recent seasons, there's really no dropoff in quality.

The reasons everyone seems to think that it used to be so much better are twofold--

1) We see a lot of "best of" clips or YouTube links to the best of the skits from the old days, and it's easy to think that the old episodes had only the good stuff.

2) We remember enjoying the show that much more when we first discovered it as kids, because it meant getting to stay up late and watch "risque" adult humor broadcast live. Our nostalgia for that makes us think it was a much funnier show, and we forget the duds.

I like to cut SNL some slack, because of the constraints it has to work under--producing over an hour of content each week, keeping it topical (which it generally does--you can really pinpoint a given period in time by watching that week's SNL episode), working with a guest host who may or may not be terrible at live comedy, and doing it all live. All told, they do a pretty decent job of it, which you can tell by the fact that no other show was able to do the same and knock them off their perch for forty years.

Also, Crack misses the point of the White People sketch. It's not blacks who are going to supplant the whites--it's the hispanics. Which is also interesting--for all the drama about not enough black players on the show (at the time they had two cast members, now they have five) no one thought to add someone from the fastest growing ethnic group in the country.

Not that race should be the reason to add a cast member, but if you're going to live by that sword it seems odd to still have no hispanics on the cast.

Brando said...

Yeah the Rivers sketch was weak. Imagine what Joan Rivers would have been able to do with that material!

All, Althouse will never pull The Crack Emcee's plug for at least 2 reasons:

1 She has no banhammer, this is blogspot. She can only delete as obsessively as he posts.

2 To go to war in such fashion against a black man, the only black poster on her blog AFAIK, is more than her creamy hippie chick center can handle. If she could offer her body as reparations instead...but no, probably not good enough for Crack-maybe if she had a granddaughter, but...
