Sarah Palin: "America's Enduring Strength" from Sarah Palin on Vimeo.
Text. Excerpt:
There are those who claim political rhetoric is to blame for the despicable act of this deranged, apparently apolitical criminal. And they claim political debate has somehow gotten more heated just recently. But when was it less heated? Back in those “calm days” when political figures literally settled their differences with dueling pistols? In an ideal world all discourse would be civil and all disagreements cordial. But our Founding Fathers knew they weren’t designing a system for perfect men and women. If men and women were angels, there would be no need for government. This is a reference to Federalist #51 ("If men were angels, no government would be necessary.").
Our Founders’ genius was to design a system that helped settle the inevitable conflicts caused by our imperfect passions in civil ways. So, we must condemn violence if our Republic is to endure....
Just days before she was shot, Congresswoman Giffords read the First Amendment on the floor of the House. It was a beautiful moment and more than simply “symbolic,” as some claim, to have the Constitution read by our Congress. I am confident she knew that reading our sacred charter of liberty was more than just “symbolic.” But less than a week after Congresswoman Giffords reaffirmed our protected freedoms, another member of Congress announced that he would propose a law that would criminalize speech he found offensive.Ah! The irony!
America must be stronger than the evil we saw displayed last week. We are better than the mindless finger-pointing we endured in the wake of the tragedy. We are.

He used the word "bullseye". He bolded her name. So what if there wasn't an actual bullseye symbol. Why does the word bullseye not have the same meaning as the symbol of a bullseye?
Someone also posted that Gilford was "Dead to him". why didn't they use words that weren't so violent? Like instead of bullseying districts they could have targeted districts. Oh wait... and instead of saying She was Dead to him, instead say, "I don't like her anymore". A crazy person might have seen the highlighted name, read that the district was bullseyed and that the higlighted name was dead to the author and come to the natural conclusion that the author wants that person dead. Right?

Garage, here lately you seem to be taking the New Orleans Saints approach to the Play-Offs, we may be the Seattle Sea-Hags to YOU, but even so you really ought to step up your game, even the Sea-Hags can surprise you.

So of all the words or phrases Glenn Reynolds could have used to describe this situation, he chooses those that are going to piss off thousands of Jewish folks. Then Palin comes along and plays follow the leader. I'm sure this was unintentional by both of them, and just goes to show how incredibly stupid they both are.
Really - it's mindboggling how incredibly ignorant you are. You have the right to your opinion of course. But I have the right to mine too. And your feeble mind can just not get your mind around that concept.
Heh.
If Obama takes the Garage Mahal tack of blaming Sarah Palin, symbology and America in general for the murders, his approval ratings will hit the teens.

What Jews are upset? You know words that might REALLY upset Jews, “Zhid”, “K*ke”, didn’t see them used…no this is just more “faux outrage”…first Palin should simply turn the other check (Halperin) and now when she defends her side, she’s being anti-Semitic or offending Jews, somehow (Mutaman)…the reality is no matter what is or is not said or done, she’s WRONG and STUPID to you.
You’re fairly transparent, and not only to the Right, but probably to most folks in the Centre too….

Uh huh. More of the right, again, just fucking make shit up as they go.

Since we're talking about Kos, who said infamously "Mission Accomplished, Palin" where he decries the violent rhetoric of the right. He also said this:
Hence our need this year to take advantage of this perfect Democratic storm to not just win, but to utterly wipe the board clear of as many Republicans as we can catch in this wave.
A key component of this effort is to destroy their most beloved leaders.

There is a sudden realization on the right that they are on the precipice of losing not just their majorities, but some of their most cherished voices. We have been blessed with an opportunity to help that process along.

They’re already expecting to lose. You want to see them truly crushed
Not just beaten (and is that a literal beating, like maybe when Obama's supporters get in your face?) but destroyed and truly crushed.
I do find it amusing that the entry for 'Blood Libel' on Wikipedia ( the massively multi-player online editing game ) has had a storm of edits today.

There's at least one high profile left-wing Jew who is coming to Palin's defense. Not that he speaks for all Jews, any more than anyone else, but it certainly does show there is room for differences of opinion here.
And anyone who disagrees is guilty of another blood libel.

When some people were seriously disturbed by the real possibility of American soldiers and perhaps more pointedly, our contacts and cooperating nationals and their families in Iraq, Iran and elsewhere (Lebanon, etc.) would be at increased risk for exposure and even death because of Wikileaks' dissemination of secret government documents, they were marginalized.
Can someone explain to me about the hysterical allegations we have seen from the left over the cause of the Giffords attack and murders in the light of the left's dismissal of the danger of our allies abroad being specifically exposed, named and targeted?

"In the grand scheme of things, the idea that Palin used a phrase associated with one particular accusation to rebut a modern false accusation seems like little reason for outrage. So is this issue settled now? That this guy was a psychotic sub-human nutcase with a vendetta of personal revenge at being embarrassed by this congressman who wouldn't answer his question? Or will the leftards continue to beat the dead drum of 'violence' that they allege the right seems to incite in all of us as an excuse for them to get all faux enraged at the tragedy of it all? The only thing missing was the gnashing of teeth.
Hey, if this were a republican judge and a republican congresswoman, and a republican gathering, would there be such maudlin outrage and 24/7 news coverage around the globe? I think not.

The country has been waiting for this Facebook post from Sarah Palin. As one of the victims of this horrible tragedy, it was crucial to hear what she had to say.
Isn't it nice that you feel so compelled to politically rape this woman on a constant and continuous basis, then simply step aside, point a finger at her, and then proclaim she is the victim of you and your ilks collective attacks?
Let me know when your balls of have dropped.

You can start with the ADL. And you can actually read their statement. In it, they wish that Palin had not invoked that phrase. Nowhere do they indicate, either with words or tone, that they are upset. And they do acknowledge that her usage of it was within normal English usage of the phrase.
From the ADL:
Still, we wish that Palin had not invoked the phrase “blood-libel” in reference to the actions of journalists and pundits in placing blame for the shooting in Tucson on others. While the term “blood-libel” has become part of the English parlance to refer to someone being falsely accused, we wish that Palin had used another phrase, instead of one so fraught with pain in Jewish history.
Garage, you should relish the thought of a Palin candidacy. She's already vanquished Obama (don't worry, I fact-checked the verb "to vanquish" and it's clean). That means that the Dems will finally have to run Hillary. That should get you hard.
I think what is most impressive about her reaction was her sense of timing. It took some insight to know to wait for a few days as folks like Krugman ran to the end of their chains, like fools, and then to release this statement. Right on Sarah Palin!
Lol. Ok. There you have it. No bullseye = bullseye. Typical right wing journalistic fact checking. Just making shit up.
There's a bullseye on Arizona on the map. Giffords name appears to the left in a list of those, dare I say, targeted?
Also, #blamepalin is trending. As is blood libel, which she supposedly misused the term in the video.
One tweeter described Palin as a 'MILK' Mom I'd Like to Kill.
This hysteria is getting a bit out of hand.

Face it - Palin's ad was completely inappropriate. It was pointed out that it was inappropriate at the time (by Congresswoman Gifford no less). And Palin is completely immature and unable to take responsibility - that she can't admit it. She can't even say that she regrets if people took it the wrong way. And her robotic followers (that means you) have to bend over backwards to defend the indefensible.
Sorry - I'm not afraid to say it like it is - the violent rhetoric is dangerous.
That's what I think - its my fucking opinion. I'm allowed to have an opinion. I'm not trying to stamp out your free speech. I'm just using my free speech rights to say that I think her rhetoric is dangerous and that I think you are wrong.

there are a few people who actually still believe that she writes this stuff... can you imagine?
Because Obama writes all his stuff, right HD? Please give up the memes that have failed, HD…be bold strike out into new territory…
But let’s sum up HD:
1) If it’s not particularly stunning, “She’s stoopit”;
2) When it’s well-done, “She din write it, She’s STOOPIT!’
Yeah we get it HD you think Sarah is stupid….True, she mops the floor with the Left, but she’s stupid…didn’t you guyz learn nuth’n from Bush, “He’s a MORON!” Ok, how does it feel to lose to a MAROON? Try a new tack, she’s tough, smart and worthy of our respekt…we need to beat this womon?
The Dems keep digging:
Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said that Palin had missed the point by releasing a statement this morning blasting the media for "blood libel" for looking to assign blame in part to her rhetoric after the attempted assassination of Giffords last weekend.
"You know, Sarah Palin just can't seem to get it, on any front. I think she's an attractive person, she is articulate," Clyburn said on the Bill Press radio show.
"But I think intellectually, she seems not to be able to understand what's going on here."
Not content to beclown himself and his party; Clyburn took the meme even further.
The No. 3 House Democrat referenced the civil rights era and said that some of the shrill rhetoric in modern politics is reminiscent of that time.
"I have some experiences that maybe she does not have," he said. "When I see and hear things today that are reminiscent of that period of time, I am very, very concerned about it, because I know what it led to back then, and I know what it can lead to again."
Yes, we do Congressman, I believe the term you're looking for is; a high-tech lynching.
Mutaman said...

Several months? Really? Plus, he was a POTUS, the circumstances, rituals, and ceremony are much different than a mass shoot/murder scene involving a congresswoman and a federal judge. The two don't even compare.
Wait a minute, I thought Judge Roll was a Republican.
I was saying that if the congresswoman was a republican along with the judge who was a republican, would the coverage had been the same. Since the congresswoman is a democrat, and by the grace of god has lived through her ordeal, the judge who is a republican and was killed for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, has gotten little to no coverage at all in the totality of the overall coverage. The nine year old girl, may the Lord keep her in his bosom for all eternity, has gotten more press. Yes, this sounds totality and completely callous, but I'm calling it out like it is. If you don't like that, I can't help you.
Finally, are you saying this tragedy doesent deserve the out rage and coverage given.
Nope, never said, never meant it, and I'm always intrigue at how people like you can come to these conclusions without any evidence to back them up. Of course there should be coverage and outrage. 6 people were killed, 12 people were wounded by a psycho nutcase that everyone knew about but did nothing about. His friends saw him slowly go nuts, his parents knew he was nuts, the local authorities knew about this guy, even his college kicked him out because he was a psycho. Please, please, please do not presume to lay the blame outside of anyone but him. He is the cause of this tragedy and death and he is solely responsible for it. No one can make anyone do anything they don't want to.
What's next? Mind control? CIA plots? Conspiracies? How soon before the tinfoil hat brigade hits the airwaves and the intertubes about his alien implants and hypnotic CIA manipulations come to light?

The left's breast beating would appear far more genuine if they didn't spout hate speech themselves.
This seems like damage control and spin to me. And frankly it is a bit tiresome and silly. The tragedy is what we should be talking about. Instead we are talking about Sarah Palin who comes out and defends herself against her treatment by the media with far more passion than is warranted under the circumstances. Good grief.
Presidential material? No way....
That was a great speech.. better than Obama's race speech in PA.
Probably already in here, but not going to wade through 240 comments.
Liberals all aTwitter about wanting to kill Sarah Palin.
"We are".
Well, some of us -- those of us left-right-and-middle who care more about a solemn remembrance of the fallen than about scoring cheap political points -- are.
I pray in all sincerity that the President delivers a solemn, stirring eulogy rather than a Wellstone Funeral redux.
Sarah Palin the comeback kid!

Really ‘cuz you might have told Olberman, Mathews, Moulitsas and Dupnik that on SATURDAY/SUNDAY….
Instead we are talking about Sarah Palin who comes out and defends herself against her treatment by the media with far more passion than is warranted under the circumstances. Good grief.
Yeah too much passion, she’s only guilty of murder by association to hear the left talk…Translation: *WAHHHHHH* She’s defended herself! *WAHHHHHHHH* Why couldn’t she just be quiet and let us call her names!?!?
Presidential material? No way.....
When I read comments like this my question, “When was she EVER ‘Presidential material’?” in your eyes? And I’ll bet the answer is, “Never.” But thank you for your concern trolling.
I hadn't realized it earlier, when I was commenting on Gov. Palin's remarks, but the President is apparently speaking later today. And, so, I would suggest that she has put pressure on him to disclaim the extreme rhetoric that his supporters have been utilizing since Saturday. And, I think given the responses so far of some his people, he may be able to pull it off. We shall see.
The No. 3 House Democrat referenced the civil rights era and said that some of the shrill rhetoric in modern politics is reminiscent of that time.
Yes, especially that of people like Clyburn who lived the Civil Rights movement, who fabricated bogus charges of racial epithets against Obamacare protestors.
Mr. Breitbart is still waiting for you to claim your $100K price, Cong. Clyburn. If an amateur with a Flip can catch Helen Thomas pining for the logical conclusion of the Final Solution, surely you as an old pro can catch a bunch of yahoos pining for Ol'Dixie.
@Mutaman
You mean like when Reagan died of natural causes and his funeral lasted several months, with complete media coverage.
I think you have a typo there.
As a former POTUS Reagan was accorded a state funeral just as was Johnson before him and so will the next POTUS to die.
When Clinton dies it will be a massive media event. I do not begrudge him or any President a state funeral and the attending media coverage. However, I am not a vicious partisan hack trolling blogs to gin up violence and hatred.
HD House; You wish Palin dead do you not?
"I'm not sure it will keep her from it, but it's a disadvantage for sure. She should hire a vocal coach to tone it down a bit. Of course, then she'll be accused of being ashamed of where she came from, etc., etc."
It's not the you betchas that's the problem. That works in her favor ... it's the actual tone of her voice that's the issue, and that's a genetic one that she cannot change. Hillary! has a lousy voice, too, but her register is a bit lower and more serious.
I appreciate Mark Steyn, but have a hard time listening to him on the radio — he sounds too much like Paul Benedict from "The Jeffersons"
Joe (The Crypto Jew)
It's more like Sarah Palin is the one saying WAAAHHHHH the media is picking on me! I'm certainly not crying because she is defending herself. I am cringing.
When I say 'Presidential material' you are right. I never thought she was. But to some she is. But performances like this aren't so good. But Romney and Huckabee are presidential material and I dislike them as well.
Here are two opinions from Republicans that express things well.
"She should have offered prayers and compassion for the victims and let it go at that," said GOP strategist Ed Rollins. "This is not about her. A short statement would have been better than a video."
"She would have done much better if she had just ridden above all the nonsense and the politics of the shooting, including all the references of her map." said Ari Fleischer. "She could have, and should have, set a different tone entirely."
Mutaman:
Why should Sarah Palin apologize?
The original blood libel was the false accusation that Jews murdered children to drain their blood for religious ritual. Said accusation was then used to excuse pogroms against Jews.
Your ilk are falsely accusing her of complicity in the murder of a child
because of a political ritual ('targeting' an incumbent for defeat). Said libel is being used (in a largely failed attempt) to drive not only her but millions of like-minded people from the public square.
The shoe fits (up your backside, that is). No apology necessary

Matt: Do you think more people will have read and watched Palin's speech or the President's?
Alpha says Sarah's glasses reflected a teleprompter, Add that to the Presidential demeanor sitting at a desk with an American flag standing behind her and ending her talk with the American people with the "may Gob Bless America" phrase and we have ourselves a President in exile awaiting regime change after the 2012 election in 22 months. That image sure sent a strong message to the GOP Brahmins and the SocialistoCrats alike.
Oops. She said May God Bless America. Gob was my addition.
I'm not sure what was being reflected, but it wasn't being reflected from her glasses, and it probably wasn't a teleprompter -- which doesn't mean that she didn't use one.
But, damn!, she's good. Her timing and political instincts are nearly on a par with Bill Clinton's (I hated the man's policies but much admired his political skill).
I just hope Todd doesn't catch her boinking a male intern when she's president.
Methadras
This is not about Sarah Palin dude! She would have been better served not addressing this nonsense in the manner she did. It's like if someone says, 'Hey Tom are you beating your wife?" You would expect Tom to ignore it rather than dignify it by saying, "Well no I am not beating my wife..."
Media 101. Once you answer stupid questions you are into damage control and can really not do much to make it better.
Had Palin simply stuck with her initial statement about the tragedy she would have been much better off. Very few people with brains in their head blame Palin for this tragedy. And since very few do then she need not defend herself against the minority.
Very few people with brains in their head blame Palin for this tragedy.
We aren't talking about "people with brains in their head" [sic], however.
We're talking about Mark Halperin... and Andrew Sullivan... and Keith Olbermann... and Chris Matthews... and Joy Behar... and Bill Maher... and Matthew Yglesias... and Markos Molitsas... and... and... and...
Unfortunately, Sarah doesn't listen to people like Matt anymore because Sarah isn't stupid.
Like the Bush people.
The Bush Administration allowed the Left and their outriders in the Mainstream Media to describe Bush and his Administration as cutthroats and scoundrels. And they never fought back.
From this Palin learned never to give in and always to fight back, against all lies, against all attempts at smears.
The Establishment clowns that were quoted in the thread are people by and large who drove the GOP into the ground. I wouldn't trust them to beat Himmler in an election for Mayor of Haifa. They have no idea how to deal with Alinskyite lying.
Palin does. That's why she's winning, and still standing.
That's why the Left hates her so.
Matt...Why do you say that this is not about Sarah Palin or shutting her up. Was it really all about her website coordinator putting those targets on a map of races by Tea Party candidates? Well, OK. I will try harder to split that hair.

When I say 'This is not about Sarah Palin' I mean this tragedy is Tuscon is not about Sarah Palin. Some of the media has made it [partly] about her and she has decided to make it all about her.
Sarah is not actually a politician anymore. She is a media figure who decided to go on air [facebook] for a few minutes and play victim and defend herself and throw a few darts back at the media. I find it odd. I'm sure it plays well to her supporters but that is about it.

I don't think that's something we need to worry about. The Secret Service would NEVER allow that to happen.

Trust me is gets weirder. Erick Erickson over at Red States just criticized President Obama because he called for a moment of silence for the victims of the tragedy.
Yes, that is as weird and stupid as anything you got on the left. Seriously. Who criticizes the President for asking for a moment of silence?
Would be nice to see someone on the left or the right call a spade a spade. But you won't find it in this media climate we have now.
The NEW meme, "It's not about SARAH..." funny it was, until that began to fall apart.
Bingo.
ABC: Why must Sarah Palin insert herself into this story by defending herself against charges of inspiring murder?
Calypso facto,
I don't like the idea of Palin running for national office, ...
What would make you like the idea?
Why can you not simply note that her statement was excellent?
TWM, quoting Jonah Goldberg:
'I agree entirely with Glenn’s, and now Palin’s, larger point. But I’m not sure either of them intended to redefine the phrase [, blood libel], or that they should have.'
On the other hand, here's Alan Dershowitz:
The term “blood libel” has taken on a broad metaphorical meaning in public discourse. Although its historical origins were in theologically based false accusations against the Jews and the Jewish People, its current usage is far broader.... There is nothing improper and certainly nothing anti-Semitic in Sarah Palin using the term to characterize what she reasonably believes are false accusations that her words or images may have caused a mentally disturbed individual to kill and maim....
(My apologies if this has been cited before. I arrived late and read from the bottom.)

Jews, who have been the libeled ones in the history of Blood Libel tactics recognize what it is and know what the eventual results are of stiring up the passions of those that the liberals hope to encite to action.
I sincerely doubt that the Jews are insulted. More likely sad and worried because they hoped that Blood Libel has passed from political machinations and also more like worried because of the rise in anti-semitism that those on the left don't even bother to hide much anymore.
Palin is correct. Glenn Reynolds is absolutely correct. It is Blood Libel and a deliberate attempt by the media and by the Democrats to incite people to commit mahem.

Excellent point DBQ, I begin to suspect that the REAL complaint against the "Blood Libel" was that it was TOO effective...just like "Death Panels"...the howls are not because the usage was INAPPROPRIATE, but that it was too EFFECTIVE.
Joe, my complaint is that "political rhetoric" is EVEN less effective than "gossip".
Do what comes naturally...Do what comes easy...Do what FEELS good!

Ah...I love the smell of irony in the evening, don't you?
If Jews didn't get pissed off by all the thousands of trite comparisons of Bush to Hitler in entertainment and news media, they're not going to get pissed off by the use of "blood libel" as a metaphor for "slanderous accusation of complicity in murder".
Its an entirely appropriate metaphor, after all.
